Top Five(s) of 2013 – Part 2: Movies, TV and the rest

If you missed the Top Five Albums of 2013 lists, click here!

Some people got carried away and submitted more than 5 in their lists this year, Uncle Meat being the number one offender. But since Tom & Uncle Meat were good this Christmas, here are the Top Five (or Six) (or Ten) Movies of 2013.  And while we’re talking about movies we may as well do a Top TV Shows of 2013 as well huh?

  1. I only went to the cinema once in 2013 and that was to see Die Hard 5. As for TV, there are only three shows I watched consistently unless you count NFL games. My order would be 3. Homeland, 2. Perception, 1. Sons of Anarchy.
If DVDs count than, I could put Oblivion and Star Trek: Journey Into Darkness both above Die Hard.

    1. Aaron gave me a Sons of Anarchy season 2 DVD so I need to see season 1 first! I hear good things. And DVDs definitely count, I only saw one movie in cinemas this past year (Man of Steel).

    1. Hey Deke!

Nice to see Sound City on your list too. Uncle Meat and I sat here with laptops in hand watching it, trying to review it…but we were too blown away and overwhelmed by the rock royalty. I still have my notes but we never put the review together!

I really wanna see American Hustle. I heart Jennifer Lawrence.

        1. A lot of great albums too. Meat and I were amused by the end credits — the very first one. “STARRING: VINNY APPICE”. We laughed and said, “That’s the first and only time you’ll see those words in a movie!” I took a photo for the review which never happened :)

    1. Yeah I’m also a fan of Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale…can’t remember who all is in it.

Breaking Bad definitely blew me away on TV. Can’t wait for the spin-off show — Better Call Saul!

  3. My PVR is shot, so I don’t watch much live TV. But, I gotta say, I LOVE Les Stroud. So talented and interesting!

My top five TV of 2013:
    5. Frontline (I know, hard and heavy subject matter…)
    4. Doctor Who
    3. Sons of Anarchy
    2. Breaking Bad
    1. The Wire (got the boxed set)

In terms of movies, we only went to see the latest ST movie, and it was okay. I watch a lot of documentaries at home, so I can name the top five docs?

    5. The Woman Who Wasn’t There*
    4. Pink Ribbons Inc
    3. Catfish*
    2. The Invisible War
    1. The Imposter*

*3/5 are imposter docs where people are being seriously scammed or duped. Seriously disturbing sh!t.

    1. I’m sure it would be disturbing! If that’s a genre that you’re into, have you seen AKA Albert Walker? Albert Walker’s daughter actually worked with me at the record store right after that movie was made.

      1. Interestingly Wikipedia doesn’t list the daughter that I worked with, only Sheena Walker who I didn’t know. But he did have more than one daughter — I know because I saw them on TV :)

  4. I didnt get to see a bunch of movies this year, but I did like Star Trek. Benedict Cumberpatch made that move what it was. Have you seen his Sherlock Holmes series from the UK? It’s on Netflix if you have that and it’s brilliant. Breaking Bad was great as well as Dexter; two great shows that unfortunately had to end. I didn’t get a chance to see Game of Thrones as I do not subscribe to HBO, so I have to wait for it to come out on DVD/Blu-Ray. They sure are taking their time releasing that one.

I have Sons of Anarchy in queue on Netflix, but I have to start from the beginning. I think this will be a 2014 binge on all available seasons. Nice to see someone had The Following on the list too. I just barely watched that season, so it didn’t make my list. Season 2 starts in January, so I am looking forward to that one. Great lists!

    1. My dad actually is a big fan of Cumberbatch’s Sherlock series. My sister is a big fan of Game of Thrones. My best friend Peter is always talked about Dexter. Sounds like you’ve picked some good ones!

  5. Aha! Now I see what you were up to… I think I can guess what part 3 might be… will see if I’m proven correct tomorrow!

I have less to add to the conversation, here. I haven’t had a TV in my house since 1996 and the last theater movie I saw was the first Spider-Man, back when we lived in Saskatoon (gotta be, what, ten years ago that came out?). I don’t ‘do’ going to the movies because I want to knock the whole audiences’ heads together. Going to the movies makes me hate people so much.

Now, while I can still get DVDs from the library and watch them on the Mac, we barely have time to watch. By the time we get the kids (4 and 2 years old) to bed, we’re baked due to long days. The idea of sustaining attention on a two hour movie is so foreign… it doesn’t happen often. Maybe on a weekend night…

We did go above and beyond, though, and binge-watched all of Breaking Bad (on loan from my Dad). We lost entire weekends to it (so apparently we CAN find the time haha), and were so grateful we did – I can’t rave enough about the casting, the acting, the writing… the whole she-bang was brilliant. But movies? Didn’t see too many.
