#1121: A Look at the New CD Section at the Old Toys R Us Store [VIDEO]

A sequel to #1119:  The Olde Toys R Us Store Sure Has Changed…

RECORD STORE TALES #1121: A Look at the New CD Section at the Old Toys R Us Store

Lo and behold!  CDs have joined their vinyl brethren at the Toys R Us Store!

They are filed with the same lack of attention and care, but they have arrived.  Deluxe and super deluxe editions?  Yes.  Deleted items?  Also yes.  Value?  Sometimes?  The prices were scattered from deals to ripoffs.

Pricing is a problem across the board, but keep in mind, they did beat the Beat Goes On across the street on some vinyl pricing on last visit.  It’s hard to tell if some prices were real or a mistake.  On vinyl, the new Beatles single, for example, on black 7″, was $32 bucks.  The same price as their cheapest Iron Maiden long-player.  They wanted $130 for their Whitesnake Still Good To Be Bad box set.   Other boxes, like Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull, were moderately priced in the low $30s.

Joining the CDs were DVDs, Blu-rays, and TV series box sets.  They had picture discs and collector’s editions.  I just hope the section continues to grow, and improves in execution, instead of withering on the vine.

For a detailed look at everything I scored at the Toys R Us music section, enjoy the short video below!

  1. The value on that Y&T album is insane.

I haven’t actually heard that Slade album, but I am familiar with a couple of the songs. If you see Til Deaf Do Us Part you have to get it though. I think it’s their best album by far.

    1. Y&T breaks down to $2.75 per album. The only catch is you have to rip it album by album, not disc by disc.

Slade was just a “wow, I can’t believe this is here, someone needs to rescue it.” But if I see more that match the series, I will get them.

  2. Great score, Mike. I have a Slade Best of, no albums. Haven’t any Y&T at all yet (have been focusing on Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest back catalogues recently) – that looks like a great set. Henry.

    1. Fortunately I have complete Lizzy and Priest albums, though I still need the latest Lizzy superdeluxe. Priest I am solid.

Y&T, now I don’t need as much. The 90s albums, and the first two really.

    1. You gotta dig for the prices. My scores were cheaper than the guys across the street on vinyl. For CD, definitely some good prices on Jethro Tull. Other things like Whitesnake were double what Amazon asked.

    1. They’re not what they used to be, but here I am still finding stuff to buy. I hope this situation improves. They literally just need to fix up the section a bit. A part time staffer should be in charge of the whole area.

  3. You made out well. I theorize the reason why solo artists are now arranged by the first letter of their first names is because that is how MP3’s and i-pods do it. Therefore, it’s ingrained in the minds of the younger generation to arrange music that way.

  4. Wow! I really have to make time and stop by our local Toys R Us and see if they have any of these things. Coop’s “From the Inside” and “Killer” would be graciously welcome to my collection! Wondering what the price was like on those?

I’ll have to eventually pick up that Y&T set, as it is the easiest way to get all of those albums (they’re not easy to find individually). The overlap of albums per disc is what kept me from picking it up for all these years, but I can always rip them and have the appropriate albums separated by folders…

Great video, Mike! I’m happy to see you go back to the old “LeBrain” format :)

    1. Killers was $36 bucks at our store. Still cheaper than the clowns across the street where I used to work.

By “LeBrain” format I assume you mean more production values, more editing, more angles? I’m going to try to do more of this, especially this spring.

      1. $36?? For a CD??? Nope, never! I find it hard paying more than $10, especially if it’s a standard edition that’s been around for ages. Deluxe editions, I’m okay paying more. But, $36, NO WAY!
And yes, the production value was excellent! Just missing the old LeBrain theme by Dr. Kathryn ;)
