Happy Friday, folks! Grab A Stack of Rock has been rollin’ without a week off since September 1! I was going to take this week of for a break, but then Harrison and Jex said “We wanna do a show without you on Saturday night!” I said “OK!” Stay tuned tomorrow for those details.
Next week is a special one for us. It will mark one year since that fateful morning on October 28 2022 when I said to Harrison, “Are you free, and do you feel like going live tonight?” To celebrate one year of Grabbing Stacks of Rock, I’ll be recapping all the episodes since January 5 2023, and we will have a special anniversary episode on the 27th. Special theme, special guests (including at least one new one!), and all the party favours.
That’s all I can say for now! Stay tuned; the action’s just getting started!
Be like Paul Shortino, and Grab A Stack of Rock with us!

Hope to be there, Mike! PS – Finished watching the Helix shows (Parts 1-3): fun & learned a lot! Also has inspired me to revisit April Wine (who I am already familiar with slightly from MTV in the early ‘80’s, aka the golden age of Canadian rock/pop crossover in the USA).

Great, Mike! I watched the first half of Saturday’s show I missed. Loved Harrison’s Ian Gillan finds. This inspired me to pull out my IG CD’s. I have the two IGB CD’s and all the excellent Edsel reissues from 2007 (and almost all his later releases including the ones with Tony of Black Sabbath) and interestingly the only live album I have in my collection is from Japan 1977 (the IGB Band), so I do not have anything from the Japan 1978 shows or UK 1982 mentioned by Harrison. (I saw Ian only once, by the way, on his “Gillan’s Inn” tour around 2006). Will definitely need to seek out the awesome version of “Smoke on the Water” which Harrison mentioned. Also liked all the talk from Aaron and the others about Z.Z. Top. I am of course very familiar with them from all their big ‘80’s hits (which were on heavy rotation on MTV back then), but it was only much later that I ever bought anything by them, inspired by a friend in Germany who sung their praises to me. Also was fascinated by Jex’s talk of The Spoons, who I had never heard of and have started checking out their “Stick Figure Neighborhood” album (1981). Last comment: thanks for the reminder of Jex’s WordPress site which I checked out again this weekend and I enjoyed his record fair essay and the old YouTube links (I enjoyed hearing him in his native tongue which I also speak as a second language).

Gillan’s Inn! Jex will be receiving a “tour edition” copy of that excellent album soon.
I have a lot of Gillan, but not all of it is on my PC. I know I have IGB Live at Budokan, and some Gillan albums such as Double Trouble.
I have made sure Jex has seen this comment, and he appreciates it!
ZZ Top is one of those bands to be careful when buying on CD. You do not want most CD editions of the first 7 albums. 6 of them were remixed. The best way to get the ZZ Top albums on CD is in a pretty great box set with the Warner years.

Indeed, Mike, after I wrote that I found more live bonus live content on some of the others!
Thanks to Jex, for the additional Spoons recommendations. I will definitely check out those two studio albums and the live album. I’m always up to learn more about good Canadian bands (both hard rock/heavy metal or otherwise).
Speaking of which, I would like to put in a plug here for French speaking artists, by the way, both from Canada, France, etc. You may know more about heavy metal/hard rock from Quebec, and I’m not so up on recent artists from Canada in general, but my favorite classic is Robert Charlebois. A friend from Toronto (who lives in Australia!) turned me on to his 1968 psychedelic classic album with Louise Forestier and I have that as well as a number of his other which I’ve gotten since then.

Robert Charlebois is awesome! I was actually given one of his records a couple years ago, I believe it was a hits compilation, but sadly I didn’t hold on to it, as it was obvious that it was kept in a damp garage for years, and it had a smell (potentially mold). A song I really liked from it that was new to me was “Ya Sa Pichou”, but of course there were many classics I had heard many times like “Lindberg” and “The Frog Song”.
I really should add some Charlebois in my collection (preferably mold-free, LOL!). Thanks for putting him back on my radar.
Bonne journée mon ami, au plaisir de se reparler! -Jex

I feel like I am learning here!
Jex is going to have to do a full French translation of Tee Bone Man.

Hey Henry, thanks for the kind words! Definitely look more into The Spoons. “Stick Figure Neighborhood” is a great debut, but it’s with the follow-up, “Arias & Symphonies” that they really found their sound. And the one after that, “Talkback”, is simply a masterpiece.
I always recommend this performance to people who are looking to get into The Spoons: Live at the Montreal Spectrum, December 9th 1984. They were on fire that night (by the looks of it, I wasn’t there or anything, lol!).
Another thanks for checking out the old blog! I have a cool Halloween Special dropping on the 29th so stay tuned for that!

P.S. Tu parles français?? J’aime ça!

I correct myself: there are also some live tracks from 1980-81 on the bonus disc of the Edsel version of “Gillan.”

I find those Gillan’s VERY hard to keep straight in terms of bonus tracks.

Love the mustache. Noirison looks even more like Sheriff Bulloch from Deadwood than normal Harrison.

It was complete accident. I asked Jen to make me a moustache very quicky. She did, and she made a loooong one. I was like, “This isn’t what I imagined, but it DOES look like Noirison…”
So I went with it!
