Fresh in today’s mail, it is the latest KISS Off the Soundboard CD, Asylum Tour 1985, in Texas!
“But Mike,” you query. “I thought that was a vinyl exclusive, and I thought it sold out too.”
True, it was a stupid coloured 3 LP set, exclusive to the KISS store, and now sold out except in bundles with a shirt.
The Japanese record company said いいえ and issued it on CD anyway. They did a smashing job of it! Some fans received a free sticker; I did not. Inside the cardboard gatefold sleeve was a mini KISS poster, and 2 CDs, each one within its own plastic sleeve within its own printed paper sleeve. The design for this album was a little different from the previous five in that this time there is a picture on the outer cover.
The CD sounds great, and it’s classic fastfastfast 80s Kiss with the unforgettable Eric Carr on drums. That’s why you only see CD 2 in this photo. CD 1 is in the deck! This could have been released officially in 1985.

Cool. That had to be a great tour. Eric Carr on the kit and Paul Stanley in his vocal prime.

I loved what I heard on Disc 1. Eric’s drumming was unlike Singer or Criss. The solo is different – a lot of triggered synth tones to accompany the solo. Very different from Animalize Live. So far, so good.

I have two problems with it and both are related to the fact we are 30 years later. First, I saw that tour about a 2-3 weeks later and at the time, loved the show. Listening back, DAMN, these songs are fast. They tempo is so sped up almost to the point of being too fast. And DAMN, Paul’s rants between song are horrible. He did so much better on other shows from that era, but I listen back now and I do cringe at how bad they are. Overall though, musically, still a great show and love anything with Eric & Bruce on it.

I found Paul’s raps to be a little less extreme than the Animalize Live. It’s marginal though.
I think this album really is a showcase for Eric and Bruce. It was also weird for me to hear Paul AND Bruce doing solos!? Is this the only tour with FOUR solos in the set?

The raps on this one seemed so awkward. Normally he is so much more at ease. Who knows.

I noticed he was speaking in his normal voice more for these raps.

Maybe that was it. Not use to that.

It gave me a different vibe for sure. But I felt the raps weren’t as… I dunno… “offensive?” Like there were no jokes about Gene’s illegitimate children this time etc.

はい to Japan for still keeping the compact disc alive and well.

Somebody has to, right? I’m glad because I have a contact at the American label, and he told me NO compact disc was coming. He didn’t know what Japan had planned. I think Kiss will end up regretting that they did this.
