GETTING MORE TALEΒ #617: Now! 2
βHave you had a lot of people returning this CD?β asked the irritated mom standing at the front counter.
βNot that I know of,β I answered, truthfully.Β Unless one copy counts as “a lot”.
βWell this is the second copy I got from your store!Β And it wonβt play!β
The steaming woman handed me her copy of Now! 2.Β This was a Canadian spinoff from the popular Now That’s What I Call Music series.Β All pop hits.Β And the CD was a mess.Β A totally destroyed disc.Β Instead of a nice, clean surface, it was a series of tight concentric circles.Β You could feel them.Β It looked like somebody tried to carve LP grooves onto a CD.Β Even the plastic case was already a skating rink.
Iβd seen this kind of damage before.Β Car CD players were notorious for that kind of scratching.Β The technology of the 1990s didnβt make for very good portable CD players.Β I saw plenty of discs with the circular damage.Β A CD playerβs laser canβt hope to read a disc looking like that.Β And they didnβt come out of the case that way.Β Yes, CDs can be damaged with you buy them.Β Usually thatβs from the packaging process and results in a few cracks or large scratches.Β But patterns of concentric circles didnβt come out of the box.Β That was caused by a CD player β period.Β It used to blow customers minds when Iβd ask if they owned a car or portable CD player just by looking at their damaged discs.Β I was never wrong.
Additionally, even though I told her otherwise, Iβd seen that kind of damage once before on a Now! 2 disc…returned by the same woman a few days before!Β Same story then too, only I wasnβt working that day.Β The lady claimed to have bought the CD like that, so our helpful staff exchanged the disc for her.Β Now she was returning the replacement copy too.Β Two copies, utterly and carelessly destroyed.
Iβm sure the lady couldnβt fathom that it was her kids who wrecked the CD with their portable players.Β Little Timmy or little Suzie wouldnβt lie about such things.
Because we had a βno questions askedβ exchange policy, I had to do the exchange.Β But I made sure it was the last one.
I grabbed another new copy of Now! 2.
βIβm going to open this CD right now,β I explained, βso you can see its condition right out of the package.βΒ I cut off the shrink wrap.
I carefully removed the CD from the case and showed it to her.Β βAs you can see this one is clean and brand new.βΒ She nodded yes.
βThis is the way they should always look coming out of the wrapper,β I explained.Β βSince youβve seen this one for yourself, we know itβs in good shape.Β Iβm going to write that on your receipt.β
She said βOKβ.Β I took her receipt and wrote, βCD was opened for customer in perfect condition β NO EXCHANGES.βΒ I signed it and handed it to her with her third and final brand new copy of Now! 2.
We didnβt have any more problems with the lady and her destructive kids after that.Β Fortunately our distributor let us return both wrecked copies of Now! 2.Β They didnβt have to.
βNowβ thatβs what I call CD abuse!
