Meh. I’m as interested as the next person to see the movie, but I can’t get excited about this. None of the elements of this short little thing excite me at all. We’ve never seen the Falcon or X-Wings fly before? Another guy in a black robe with a new lightsaber? A young person on Tatooine in a hurry to get up to do-gooder stuff? A cute little robot? Yawn.
Also, if the Empire had been smart, they’d have blown up Tattooine, not Alderaan. For a desert planet in the middle of nowhere, a lot of shit always seems to happen there.
When does this new movie actually come out, because you said something about months of work left to do and if that’s the case, this is too little too soon.
Maybe I’m just an old fogey but, to me, releasing a trailer for a movie is meant to drum up excitement for movie coming to theaters SOON. Star Wars can have a bit of leeway, I suppose, since it’ll rake in bazillions, and so a teaser trailer before an actual trailer might make sense, but this is WAAAY too early. When you said there was a trailer, my first thought was ‘cool, the movie’s coming soon.’ But clearly not. YAWN.
I may be wrong but I think some other films have had the trailer even further in advance. 18 months maybe?
It seems to be the way to do hype these days. Back when we were a kids, a trailer would come out and then 2 months later you’d be watching the movie in theaters.
The only way I can see it working, now that they’ve put this out with SO much time left before an actualy trailer, let alone the ACTUAL FILM A FRIGGIN’ YEAR FROM NOW is if they have a plan for a short little teaser trailer like this, say, once a month for the next 11 months. Then the ful trailer a month before the movie. But if that’s the case, we’ll have seen half the movie before it’s even released!
But if this is a stand-alone teaser this far out, somebody in the marketing department hit their head just before making the decision to put out this nothing-interesting little fart of a teaser.
I believe they will do a series of trailers, spaced a few months apart from each other. For example you’ll notice we see no familiar characters in the trailer even though we know they’re in the film. The next trailer, you might get a glimpse of Han or Chewie. Then that will rev up the excitement for another cycle. Then finally they might do one with Luke and Leia, leading into the release of the movie.
I actually wasn’t too excited about Episode VII. The prequilogy really killed the whole thing for me. But this … this! This has got me a tad excited. I reckon there’s a chance they can pull this off. Banish the memory of Episodes I to III. Hurrah!
I agree J. I feel the same way. I watched Episode III recently and it was hard to feel anything about it. The acting and dialogue was so wooden. The action seemed chaotic.
I hope this is more classic. We will see won’t we? My sister mentioned she thought the camera work resembled Star Trek rather than Star Wars, and she has a point there. I noticed the same thing.
I do love the image of the dark woods in the winter. That’s something we’ve never seen in Star Wars before, a little out of Game of Thrones isn’t it?
I actually caught those two new Star Trek movies just recently and really liked some of the shots. Really pretty splendid – particularly the light hitting the lens and such (something that I recall being used in those prequilogy movies – particularly the 2nd one?). But yeah, there’s some of those shots in this trailer.
As for Game of Thrones … don’t shout at the screen … but … I’ve never seen it. Oooft!
I never have either ;) Just bits and pieces. Dudes in the woods in the snow with swords!
I wasn’t too fond of the Star Trek lens flares. I didn’t hate them, but I could have used a few less. I much preferred the look of those Trek films to, for example, Transformers or Man of Steel.
That’s my understanding of Game of Thrones. Guess that’s why there’s all the talk about winter coming.
But yeah, good point – they did use the lens flare in practically every scene of the first Star Trek flick. Then they learned some new moves. Same as the over-reliance of the Spock providing intel thing. Anyhoo … they beat having another Star Wars flick that looks like those prequilogy disasters or, like you say, one that looks like a Michael Bay adventure!
I think Star Wars is somewhat sacred, you can’t deviate too far from the formula. Visually they have to all look more or less the same. There are some variations to that. Like in Episode II you notice crash zooms for the first time. And this episode seems to have a lot of fast moving action from the perspective of the ship (the Falcon) that we haven’t really seen before. We saw something like it in the opening battle in Episode III, but not done this clean.
Completely agree. Episodes I to III were just awful for many reasons. I can forgive the unfamiliar (space) battles, etc. but the lightsaber duels had absolutely no tension or flow. Hopefully the spirit of The Trilogy is here. Restore balance …
The Darth Maul duel had its moments, but it was choppy, and as you say didn’t flow. Also it ended in the dumbest possible way. Here we have the new badass, Darth Maul, and he has Obi Wan hanging by his fingertips. Obi uses the Force to try to grab his lightsaber, and what does Maul do? He stands and STARES as Obi Wan grabs it, leaps, and cuts him in half. He just stood and stared. What? How does that make any sense?
Still, remember the original Luke/Vader duel in Cloud City? Didn’t Vader just scare the shit out of you? That was classic. I remember him using the Force to throw all that stuff at Luke and I screamed, “THAT’S NOT FAIR!”
I don’t think you will. I believe I know what Luke’s plot is in the next movie, and it’s not what you’d expect and it’s cool as hell. Star Wars Underworld is the source.
But I personally hope that doesn’t happen and I’ll explain why. The entire prequel and original trilogies are about Anakin’s fall and redemption. It would reduce all of that to mean absolutely nothing, if Vader restores balance to the force saving his son, only for his son to eventually just turn to the dark side anyway. I wouldn’t like that.
I’d hope and expect we’ll see the new action figures etc. within 6-7 months. I definitely want the Star Wars Black 6″ series to produce that new Stormtrooper! To go with the other 3 in the army I’m building.
Haha we’re hardcore GoT-ers over here. Man, we started and then we couldn’t stop. So be forewarned – it’s a good idea to start, a great idea! But clear your social calendar. Because once you start there will be no stopping until you’re caught up.
Yeah, that’s what I would expect to happen if I start watching. I dare say I’ll start at some point after it’s wrapped up. Too many folks telling me it’s too good to miss completely.

1 year to the film. The modus operandi for the film industry seems to be putting out teasers reeeally far in advance.
What is it with Tattooine? Luke implies it’s an unimportant mud ball. But everything happens there!!

A YEAR?!?! And we’re supposed to be orgasmic about it NOW?? Give me a break. Wake me up when something actually happens.

No problem dude…I’ll let you know when something substantial happens.
I’ve heard we may see the first action figures in early 2015 which is how they did it with Phantom Menace.
