#484: Top Five Road Trip Movie Singalongs

HAROLD AND KUMAR

Sometimes-contributor Thussy and I came up with a list of our Top Five Favourite Road Trip Movie Singalongs!  The five songs below are forever associated with these films in my mind.  Like any other list, I’m sure you’ll have plenty that we forgot.  These are some of our favourites.  What are yours?

#5: Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle – “Hold On”

Once our heroes Harold and Kumar finally best the Extreme Sports Assholes, they not only steal their ride but also their “Extreme Mix Vol. 5” tape! Kumar and Roldie then enjoy a hearty singalong to Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On”.  So extreme!

#4: Dumb & Dumber – “Mockingbird”

“Radio?  Haha!  Who needs a radio!  Ready Harry?”

#3: Planes, Trains and Automobiles – “Three Coins in the Fountain”, “Meet the Flintstones”

Double whammy with this classic movie!  Steve Martin attempts to get a bus full of people to sing the 1954 theme song from the romance film Three Coins in the Fountain, with no success.  Much to his chagrin, John Candy’s irritating (though lovable) character Del Griffith got plenty of response to his “Meet the Flintstones”.

#2:
The Hangover – “Three Best Friends Song”

The Hangover featured two great original songs:  “Doug” performed on piano by Ed Helms, and “Three Best Friends” sung by Zach Galifianakis. “Three Best Friends” gets the nod, because the other took place in a hotel room.  Come on, sing along folks…

#1:  Wayne’s World – “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Technically not a road movie, but they did make a trip from Aurora to Milwaukee in the film.  This iconic scene had to be #1.  There really were no other competitors.  We’re not worthy!

  1. FANTASTIC POST Mike!!! What a genius idea and the scenes you chose are so clever!

I kind of expected to see Wayne’s World but Three Coins in a Fountain from Planes, Trains & Automobiles is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! That scene is hilarious, I never would have thought to use it

Poor old Steve Martin haha (Flintstones, meet the Flintstones!). Planes, Trains & Automobiles is one of my all time favourite comedies :) love it!

I also LOVE the Dumb and Dumber scenes (predictably)

I love that “hey, you wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?” HA!

        1. I’m British, it’s in our culture :)

I’m kinda annoying too lol I was thinking about what you said and I’m the same with my partner. I know I wind him up especially when he’s telling me about his day (for example) and I can’t help but cut in with stupid jokes or innuendos!!!!

That 3 Coins in a Fountain is still making Jr giggle :) god I love that film!!! My favourite bit is when they get pulled over in the burnt out car:

“sir do you think this vehicle is fit for highway travel?”

“yes I do, I really do”

          HA!

  2. This is a fun idea! And you got a lot of good ones. Of course #1 was obvious. On one coffee this morning, I could only add Brad Pitt singing Air Supply in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. That cracked me up.

      1. Don’t watch the film just for that. It’s not all that great. Although I think there’s a scene where they dance to Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros’ Mondo Bongo? Or was that another film? Gah, I forget. I love that song, though.

But yeah, I ain’t into Brangelina.

  3. Great topic and excellent selections. Honorable mention (at least) should go to Chris Farley and David Spade singing The Carpenters’ “Superstar” in Tommy Boy. And then there’s Chevy Chase and beverly D’Angelo belting out “Mockingbird” in National Lampoon’s Vacation. Two of my personal favorites.

    1. OOOH! RICH! Tommy Boy! That was the one that Thussy couldn’t remember. He was certain there was one in Tommy Boy — you have confirmed this. (Neither of us remember Mockingbird in the original Vacation though — maybe I need to buy that sucker on blu-ray.)

      1. I thought there was something missing when I read this yesterday. I didn’t think of that ‘Superstar’ scene until later.
        One of the greatest.

  4. I’ll second your choice for number 1. I don’t know if they would make any films about any of my road trips back in the day because the main contributors were the Stormtroopers of Death.

    1. My wife went to school with one of the actors from Road Trip. Paul Costanzo. We love that movie! But I totally forgot the singalong. We may have to do a Part II on this.

    1. The ORIGINAL…wow…it has been so long since I’ve seen it. Probably since it came out! The last one I saw was Muppets Take Manhattan and it was still great today.

        1. I should really revisit them. I always liked them. As you get older, sometimes you forget these things! I was mean though, I tricked my little sister into thinking Kermit died in Muppets Take Manhattan.
