One of the guys at work is Italian. He’s originally from Amalfi, where I traced my own family from. As you’d expect, he has an amazing accent.
We were talking about old video games, and he said, “Oh, my grandkids have one that they love, have you heard of it? Honky Tonk, they call it.”
Honky Tonk?
It took only a second to know he was talking about Donkey Kong!
Hey, it’s great to know that the kids are still playing the classics. That makes me smile.
I did become proficient in playing Donkey Kong by early 1983. Never dreamed it would be responsible for such and empire back then.

Did you know Donkey Kong is considered one of the hardest games of the classic era? Period? You would love the movie The King of Kong, if you haven’t seen it, you need to. Heck maybe I’ll watch it today.

I didn’t know that but it did take me longer to get good at Donkey Kong than it did many of the other games I liked to play.

I really loved the 3D look of Q-Bert.

King of Kong is outstanding. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking “is this real”. I was channel hopping and it had already been on for about 20 minutes or so. Billy is classic panto villain.

Great observation! Yes that is very true.
I bought it without even knowing anything about the movie. I read the cover and said “This sounds like my kind of thing.”

My games were definitely Bezerk and Crazy Climbers then a little down the line, Crossbow.

I used to love Honky Tonk. Incredibly frustrating, but brilliant once you mastered it.

One thing we liked about it as kids was that if you could clear the first screen, the second was completely different! Pac Man didn’t have that.

Pac Man! That frustrated me more than Donkey Kong!

I have one for you. I have a friend who got beat up by the Honky Tonk Man and a herd of midget wrestlers in Calgary. No bullshit. I still laugh my head off when I think about it. I love that tune!
