We’re back! We had a couple weeks off for Christmas and New Year’s, but we’re back LIVE tonight to talk about some more album covers.
Today’s challenge comes again from the mind of Martin Popoff. Pick 10 great album covers from bands we despise. This was challenging in two respects. First, do we really want to say we “despise” a band? That’s a strong word, so we had to choose carefully. Just because I don’t listen to a band doesn’t mean I despise them. Second, I hate to say it, but many bands I hate have terrible covers. It was hard finding 10 good ones. But I did, so tune in tonight for some Contrarians fun with Martin, Grant, Peter, Jamie and myself.
This will be a controversial one. It is already. One of the covers I said was too crappy to include, was picked by Jamie. (At least we both despise the same band.) So we’ll see!

That is a really tough one. I’d probably look at a bunch of Hipgnosis covers and find the bands that suck to start.

That’s a good strategy! I took the opposite track, which was googling album covers from bands I hate. It was very tough.

First one that caught my eye was Electric Warrior by T-Rex. I don’t despite them by any means, but the cover suggests a much more rocking album than what is delivered on the record itself. I was so fucking disappointed when I first heard that album.

Good call there. And herein lies the difficulty. Do you want to put T-Rex out there on your despised list? I was hesitant to do that with some bands.

I like a few songs they’ve done, but that excellent album cover promises Les Paul into dimed Marshall heavy goodness and it doesn’t deliver by any means, so fuck Marc Bolan and the horse he rode in on. You may quote me on tonight’s show! I’d be honored.

Tim and John bowed out this week, they didn’t get into the topic, so we’ll see how this plays out. Peter is always into controversy so he’ll be good.

That stinks. I’m not afraid to say which bands I don’t like. I would’ve picked a Nirvana album just to say I don’t like them.

I did! But John isn’t familiar with any covers from bands he doesn’t like, and Tim doesn’t really do much of that either.

I think Nirvana was actually the first one I wrote down. I like ONE album cover of theirs.
