โListen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!โ โ Bram Stoker
For decades, trips to the cottage and music were synonymous. When I was a younger fella, I would bring all my music with me. That usually meant five or six tape boxes, full of cassettes, and a walkman. I even brought my turntable with me for a couple summers.
As the music collection grew, Iโd have to pick and choose tunes for the trip. Itโs sad to admit it, but true nonetheless: I spent hours picking music, far more time than I used to pack clothes and essentials. It wouldnโt be unusual to find I didnโt pack enough pants, but plenty of Deep Purple.
Itโs much easier today. Load up some flash drives, or better yet, bring all the music I have ripped so far on my 2T external hard drive. In the olden days, we didnโt even have a phone or cable TV. We had radios and a big TV antenna that could pick up two channels. ย It was a cavalcade of classic Ontario television: ย Bowling for Dollars, the Hilarious House of Frightenstein, and Trivia Company with Johnnie Walters. ย Now, we have five or six devices fighting for the Wi-Fi signal, with me usually streaming Netflix. We have multiple computers, several phones, and of course cable TV. Talk about roughing it! In the 1980s, my sister and I would struggle to pick up any radio station that wasnโt playing country. Now, I just set my browser window to my home station of 107.5 DaveRocks. Unbelievable!

The interesting thing is, there are already plenty of sounds available to listen to if you donโt bring your own music. People used to spend tons of money on โnature soundsโ CDs, but at the cottage you can get that for free.
You havenโt lived until youโve gone to sleep with the sound of crashing waves coming through your open window. Nothing can put you to sleep faster, even when itโs just an afternoon nap. The sound of children playing in the lake only makes the afternoon snooze that much more peaceful. In the evening, the waves pick up intensity and are augmentedย by nocturnal woodland creatures. These โchildren of the nightโ can be heard pitter-patting around the deck, and in the branches just outside the window. Soothing sounds. Nothing to be afraid of, even in the dark. The only thing to fear would be a wayward skunk poking around looking for garbage. I used to like pitching a tent in the back yard and sleeping there. I used to bring a Walkman in there to listen to tunes on the earphones, but sometimes in the night Iโd be woken up by a raccoon sniffing around for scraps.
The absence of city sounds can be strange for those not used to it. In the city there is a constant backdrop of automobile sounds, planes flying overhead, and trucks hauling their freight. Even at night, there is a dim background hum of traffic, and of electric lights buzzing overhead. At the cottage the quiet is amplified by the dark. We are so used to the light pollution of the city, that the pitch black of a cottage night can be quite striking, especially during a late night stroll.
Bringing music to the lake is still mandatory. Itโs important to turn it off now and then, and just listen to the creatures of the night.
1998. I had just moved in with the legendary T-Rev. Two Record Store managers under one roof. Can you imagine the CD collections? We used to marvel at the wall of discs. Two CD towers, massive ones, side by side. Weโd boast that nowhere else in town would you find two copies of Metallicaโs Garage Days in the same place. Same went for many of our rare singles and imports. Finding one was difficult enough, but with our combined collections we often had two. You could come over for a drink and end up spending hours just going through our collections.
Collection samples
T-Rev and I had a lot of fun, although as it turned out, I wasnโt the right guy to have a roommate. Iโm a real early to bed, early to rise kind of guy and our wake/sleep cycles didnโt really work out. Having said that, I wouldnโt trade those months for the world! Iโd never fallen asleep on the floor before, but we had some pretty epic parties. It was also the first time Iโd woken up to find girls in the apartment! Yeah, we had good times. When we werenโt partying, weโd be playing video games on the good old N64. Goldeneye was a staple. Duke Nukem and Top Gear Rally were regular go-toโs.
Another thing we had fun with was our answering machine. We couldnโt just have a normal answering machine message. One weekend, Trevor went out to see a Britpop band who I canโt remember. Supergrass? One of those. They met the manager Andy who kept on hitting on the girlfriends. So Trevor came home and did an answering machine message with a British accent. โYouโve reached Trevor, Michael and Andy! Leave a message after the beep!โ That confused a few people. โWho is that British guy who is living with you?โ
T-Rev was also a big fan of Jerry Springer. Iโd never really watched before, but T-Rev was into it. The fights, the yelling, the chanting of โJerry! Jerry! Jerry!โโฆwe found it all terribly entertaining. In particular, I liked Jerryโs โfinal thoughtโ. Thatโs the part of the show where he somehow simultaneously agrees with all parties on the episode.
Our enjoyment of the chaos of the Jerry Springer show led to a couple tributes.
T-Rev came up withย a sign idea, and I wish he was able to put it up in the store. It was a โno shirt no shoes no serviceโ sign that said:
Because highschool is free, And Jerry Springer does not work here, Shirts and shoes must be worn in store.
Yeah, shirts and shoes were an ongoing summer issue. When I once asked a guy to put on a shirt, his answer was โWhy, are you serving food here?โ ย I just didnโt want to watch that bead of sweat dripping off hisย nipple ring.
It only made sense that we should honour the mighty Jerry Springer Show with a new answering machine message. I did it up:
โThank you for calling the offices of the Jerry Springer Show! If youโre a white trash mother whoโs pissed off at your little white trash daughter, press one! If youโre a white trash daughter who can’t stand your bitchy mother, press two! For all others leave a message after the beep!โ
People were used to bizarre answering machine messages from us by now.
The best response to it came from the boss at the old Record Store. He called one evening we were out, and left a message asking if one of us could cover a shift. And he ended the message by saying, โOh, and Iโll take option two. Thank you.โ He was a good sport.
GETTING MORE TALEย #565: The Price Weย Gotta Pay (And All the Games We Gotta Play)
I was reminded of this story recently, when J from Resurrection Songs asked about pricing schemes for new release albums.
We had a pricing schedule, created by the manager that I have called โThe Bullyโ in these pages.ย Iโm sure she did a fantastic job of purchasing, pricing and stocking goods.ย She was horrible at managing people, and never should have been in any position of power over others.
The pricing schedule was pretty simple.ย Any time weโd get a shipment of brand new stock, there would be an invoice packed with it showing our cost on each title.ย The Bully made up a pricing schedule based on cost, so we could price incoming items easily.ย For example, if the cost of the item fell between $10.40 and $11.60 (plus shipping), our sell price might have been $13.99.ย (Thatโs not an actual pricing scheme, thatโs just an example of how it worked.)ย This way, all of our stores would have consistent pricing across the board.ย That was important.ย It also made it easy for us to price things on our own without having to ask for too much direction.
The pricing scheme was created and implemented during one of the periods when The Bully was no longer speaking to me.ย Who knows why anymore.ย A manager who stops speaking to her direct reports is the very definition of unprofessional.
I came in one Tuesday afternoon, which is when the brand new stock arrived.ย Remember New Release Tuesdays?ย I began pricing the new releases using the pricing scheme she made.ย Suddenly she broke her silence and started going at me.
โYouโre pricing these all wrong!โ she yelled.ย Unfortunately nobody was in the store to witness the exchange, so youโll just have to believe me.ย I looked down at the paper in front of me.ย โBut this is the price right here on the new pricing schedule.โ I looked at it again to make sure I wasnโt wrong.ย I wasnโt.
She paused and yelled again.ย โForget about that!!โย Then she stormed into the back office, slammed the door and stopped speaking to me again.ย No witnesses, no apology either.ย An updated pricing schedule was issued shortly after.ย I never reported this behavior.ย As discussed in a prior chapter, I had brought up her abuse before and didnโt see any changes.ย I just sucked it up until I couldnโt anymore.
Some may doubt these stories, which is understandable, but Iโm the guy with the journals.ย Iโll never forget the way I was treated by one very unprofessional jerk.
I may complain a lot, but I do actually love this town.ย I was born in Kitchener.ย I donโt want to live anywhere else.ย Itโs certainly not the greatest town in the world, but itโs mine. Kitchener isnโt known worldwide for its burning hot music scene (polka music at Oktoberfest time excluded).ย That said we have produced a few local legends:
Helix (formed 1974) was based out of Kitchener for many years.
Errol Blackwood and Messenjah are our claim to fame in the reggae community.
Singer/songwriters Paul MacLeod, Danny Michel, Rob Szabo and Steve Strongman all hailed from here. ย You also may have heard of one of the greatest bass clarinetists in the world, Kathryn Ladano.
Bluesman Mel Brown wasnโt born here, but he made it home.
Not a lot to boast about, but better than a kick in the pants.
Kitchener also is not known for its arts (that would be Waterloo) or its education (also Waterloo) or sciences (Waterloo again). Whatย it does seem to have in plenty is a number of distinct smells.
Driving up Victoria street, you can smell the Westonโs bread bakery cooking up lots of delicious scents.ย My dad has a song he used to like to sing when driving by:
โWestonโs bread, Is full of lead, If you eat too much, Youโll surely be dead.โ
That was a nice smell, but I remember a far worse smell in the Record Store days.
I spent the majority of my years in the Fairway Road area of town.ย I remember taking the garbage out on many, many nights and smelling the same unexplainable smell.ย It only happened during the summer. I donโt even know how to describe it properly.ย I used to call it โgrape flavoured urineโ smell.ย It was a weird mix of grape and pee, and in the evenings taking out the garbage, it was everywhere!ย What the hell was it?ย Nobody knew.ย I havenโt smelled grape flavoured urine in a long timeโฆbut I remember it clearly any time I take out the garbage on a warm summer night.
There was an even worse smell when I was transferred to โthe wrong side of the tracksโ.ย The garbage bin there was behind a diner.ย Back there it always smelled of dirty cooking grease.
I hope your town smells better than “grape flavoured urine”,ย although you donโt have Messenjah or Helix….
Oh and that red poo-shaped sculpture? ย Nobody has a clue what it is!
GETTING MORE TALEย #563: ID3 Request Error โ Check File
Ever seen one of these errors on your media player of choice?
Letโs start by talking about what an ID3 tag is, in case you didnโt know.ย If you play music files, then you use ID3 tags.ย These tags contain the metadata about your song files.ย You know that info that automatically pops up on your player?ย Artist, album, cover artโฆthatโs from your ID3 tags. ย There is free software out there to edit your songs’ tags, although such features are bafflingly not standard in Windows. ย I use a combination of two: ย Audio Shell, and Mp3tag. ย They have different user interfaces, but more or less have all the features you need.
Sometimes my Sony Walkman mp3 player canโt pick up the cover art, but that is rare.ย The tracks will still play.ย The error that has caused me problems for years comes from my factory installed GM car stereo. ย Otherwise, it’s a great player, but sometimes it hits an ID3 tag it doesn’t like and I get an error message. ย It reads:
ID3 Tag Request Error Check File
When I get this message, the songs will not play. ย I first ran into that issue about four years ago.ย When it does happen, itโs usually on something that I recorded with Audacity, like vinyl or cassettes.ย Audacity can write the ID tags for you when you export the files to mp3.ย The error message here doesnโt give much detail. ย It’s not the cover art; that was the first variable I checked. ย I’ll get this error message with or without cover art. ย It’s frustrating when you can’t play an album in the car, and only the car.
This baffled me for years.ย โCheck Fileโ, eh?ย I did โ many times.ย Changing this, changing that.ย Writing the ID3 tags with different software. ย Nothing worked.ย Googling solutions wasnโt very helpful.
I recently came across the solution, and it was so obvious I donโt know why I didnโt think of it earlier. ย Probably because I was looking for something easier.
Just erase all the ID3 tags โ all of them โ and start from scratch. ย Both Mp3tag and Audio Shellย have easy features to do exactly this. ย Most ID3 editing programs will allow you to completely clean all tags from the file.ย Once that is done, start over, manually. ย By hand, enter the song titles, artist, album title, artwork and (very importantly) the track sequence. ย You’ll want to make sure you get that right. ย Once youโve done that the mp3 file will play just fine, as seen below.
I was very saddened when Sunrise records shuttered most of their stores nationwide, including my regular outlet at Fairview Mall. ย Not so much when the HMVs started closing. ย I haven’t spent any money at an HMV in years. ย Recently, Sunrise announced they would be taking over several of the old HMV locations, including the one at Fairview mall. ย Yes, Sunrise has finally returned to Fairview.
Sunrise re-opened a few daysย after Record Store Day in a case of bad timing, but they still had some RSD stock. ย I set aside my Saturday morning to immerse myself in their inventory. ย As expected they had plenty of vinyl, displayed front and center when you enter the store. ย It’s a good selection of the usual suspects priced in the mid-$30s. ย Their vinyl catalogue selection was much better than the same for CD. ย Flipping through the Kiss LPs, they had 15 or so titles from the catalogue including some of the lesser known ones such as Carnival of Souls. ย Then I flipped through Deep Purple on CD. ย Disappointingly, they had five copies of the hits disc Icon, one copy of In Rock (standard edition) and one copy of The Very Best Of. ย The same issue plagued many artists in the CD section: ย five copies of Icon, but very few actual albums on CD. ย This wasn’t the case across the board. ย There was a healthy Metallica section and they had all the Oasis deluxe editions. ย One deluxe that I was looking for was the four disc Black Sabbath Paranoid reissue, but all they had was the double CD (and 180 gram vinyl of course).
They staff were friendly and passed the test. ย They approached me and asked if I needed help, I didn’t need to ask them, and they waited a reasonable amount of time. ย Unfortunately their system isn’t quite up and running yet. ย No inventory lookup. ย But they tried. ย You can’t judge a store too harshly a few days into their first week. ย They had a promotional sale on: ย Buy something on vinyl and get $5 off a T-shirt. ย They had a lot of cool T-shirts, (a lot!) but if there is one thing I don’t need right now, it’s more T-shirts. ย They even had brand new Star Wars turntables. ย Star Wars turntables?
The one surprise I saw was in the Mr. Bungle section. ย They had five copies of their legendary debut album, at a steal of $5.99 each. ย Compare that with $21 on Amazon.
I hope Sunrise does well. ย They made a few sales while I was there, and the store was never empty. ย It was funny to listen to the people browsing. ย “Is that a CD?” ย “No, it’s a seven inch record.” ย “NO WAY!”
Way indeed. ย Welcome back Sunrise.

I was at a funeral recently, for an old family friend.ย Sandor was a neighbor since I was little.ย I grew up playing with his three kids: Rob, Michelle and Steven.ย It was sad but nice to see them again.ย We chatted about games we used to play as kids.ย Atari 2600, Lego, the Game of Life.ย The best games we played were the ones we made up ourselves.
One game that I invented with my best buddy Bob was called โDouble Bounce Volleyballโ.ย It was just a good way to play with a volleyball on the street with no net.ย I wrote up some rules on WordPerfect.ย What I wouldnโt give to see those again!ย What was not in the rules, but happened frequently anyway, was me throwing down some street moves.ย I tried to do the spinny-spinny-jump dance that Paul Stanley used to do in the โThrills in the Nightโ music video.ย I could do it, but it didnโt look right anyway without the tassels on the pants!ย Personal acrobatics aside, it was a great game because all you needed was two people, a street, and a volleyball.
Another game we invented was a live action version of the 1979 Atari classic game, Adventure.ย ย Due to its poor graphics, it was once considered one of the worst video games on the market.ย Since then it has somehow become a cult classic, despite the fact that your little โmanโ was just a square floating around.ย You had explore mazes and three castles, and eventually bring a chalice back to the yellow castle.ย The random settingย for the game placed objects everywhere on the field so no two games were the same.
Atari Adventure man with sword and yellow key
The main objects in the game were three keys (one for each of three castles), a sword, a magnet (useful for grasping objects out of reach) and a bridge (pretty useless).ย There were also some creatures to avoid:ย three dragons, and a bat who would steal whatever you are carrying, and sometimes replace it with something less useful.ย For example, the bat can and will steal your sword and replace it with a dragon!
A group of kids would gather together in somebodyโs back yard.ย Depending on how many kids there were that day, we might have used multiple back yards.ย Someone would hide the chalice (a drinking glass) and other objects.ย I had a neat classic U-shaped magnet that was perfect to fill that role.ย Weโd usually use clothespins for the keys.ย A plastic lightsaber was our sword.ย Then weโd all become adventurers, dragons or the bat! ย Weโd run around the yard finding objects and generally having a blast for the whole afternoon.
I think our live action game was better than the real Adventure!
One afternoon, another kid from another neighborhood joined us.ย I donโt know why Allan Runstedtler was wearing a cape, but it suited!ย Another time, we couldnโt remember where my magnet was hidden, and I really wanted it back!ย We eventually found it and decided not to hide actual valuable objects again.
Do kids even go outside and play anymore?ย Almost everything we did was improvised.ย A badminton racquet wasnโt just a badminton racquet.ย It was also a guitar for โair bandsโ.ย Bob turned a neck brace into a Texas Chainsaw Massacre mask.ย We also did a live action version of the video game Berzerk.ย We were all very lucky to grow up in a tightly knit and safe little neighborhood.ย Everybodyโs parents knew everybody elseโs.ย We played video games (everybody on the street had either an Atari 2600, or a Commodore Vic 20), but then we went outside when that got boring.ย It wasnโt just a neighborhood with families.ย It was an extended family of families that we were fortunate to experience.ย And a hell of a lot of fun.
GETTING MORE TALEย #561: (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?
In November 1995 I was going through another breakup. ย A big one — my first really serious girlfriend. ย After some soul-searching, I thought this would be a good time to expand my horizons a bit, including musically.ย By 1995, heavy metal music was not doing well.ย It was on life support.ย I wanted to check out other forms of rock and roll.
Working at the Record Store was the perfect environment for exploration.ย Christmas 1995 featured a lot of store play for Oasis, who my co-working buddy T-Rev was a huge fan of.ย Their new album (Whatโs the Story) Morning Glory? was beginning to take off.ย It also appealed to a metal head like me.ย It had a bit of everything:ย rockers, ballads, and hooks.ย It was a breath of fresh air, and loud as fuck.ย Grunge bands had dominated and carried with themย cloudy skies for the early 90s.ย Oasis brought back fun aspects of rock and roll, and were right in synch with the Beatles resurgence happening at the same time with the Anthology series.ย Oasis were almost a poor manโs Beatles.
I mean, they really wanted to be The Beatles, didn’t they?
I got to listen to the CD a lot in store, but we had a long waiting list for used copies. Because of that it would be a few months before I was able to get my own copy of Morning Glory.ย T-Rev was on top of things, and had been collecting Oasis singles.ย Oasis had a knack for B-sides, and often saved their best tunes for singles.ย This was rare; in 1995 it was unheard of to save good songs for single B-sides.ย Oasis didnโt care and did it anyway.ย My first Oasis purchase was actually the CD single for โDonโt Look Back in Angerโ.ย T-Rev made sure it was stocked, even though we rarely stocked any singles.
So โDonโt Look Back in Angerโ was my first Oasis purchase ever.ย Buying a new copy of the single was more expensive than buying a used copy of the album, but thatโs just the way it goes sometimes.ย I dug the piano part ripped from John Lennon, and the bright melody with a hint of shade.ย It really felt like an homage to the Beatles.ย And the B-sides werenโt half bad either.ย โStep Outโ and โUnderneath the Skyโ were both top notch songs each with their own flavour.
The track that really sold the single for me was โCum on Feel the Noizeโ.ย T-Rev asked, โWhy would they cover that song?โย I explained it was originally by Slade, not Quiet Riot.ย Oasisโ version is more authentic to the Slade original.ย The song was a perfect bridge between my heavy metal past and my Oasis present.
Oasis quickly became my favourite โnewโ band in 1996.ย That was the year that we opened up the branch of the Record Store that I managed.ย I thought Oasis would be a good band for store play, and while some customers enjoyed that, no staff members did.
Oasis did their part to keep the single alive in the 1990s.ย They issued box set after box set, re-releasing their old singles to those who missed them the first time.ย The coolest of these were the โsilverโ and โgoldโ boxes.ย They were plastic hard-shell box sets, one for the Definitely Maybe singles and one for Morning Glory.ย They included an interview disc (same one in both boxes) and made it easy to get caught up on Oasisโ CD singles.
These were good times.ย Though a breakup with a girl was the trigger, Oasis was the remedy.ย Some songs, like โCast No Shadowโ had me wallowing in my own pity, but it was hard not to feel good things with โSheโs Electricโ and โRoll With Itโ.ย For that reason, although there may be better Oasis albums, Whatโs the Story remains the most personal to me.
TOP FIVE REASONS TO LIKE OASIS:
5) Lars says it’s OK .
4) They had a member (Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan) who looked like Mr. Bean.
3) Noel frequently refers to Liam derisively as “our kid”.
It started in early 2008.ย It probably really began much earlier than that, but January 2008 was when I knew something was very wrong.
Jen and I were looking forward to getting married in August.ย She was still living in Brampton, and coming to visit me in Kitchener on weekends.ย Things seemed fine, until they werenโt.ย She seemed tired a lot.ย She slept a lot of the days and was up until late in the night.ย She seemed depressed.ย Then one day I noticed something really, really odd.
We used to enjoy playing Nintendo Wii all the time.ย Her favourite game was called Find Mii.ย It was a simple โWhereโs Waldoโ style of game.ย You had to find certain people in crowds.ย Jen was the master of Find Mii.ย I saw her finish the game a few times.ย She was unbeatable and had several winning strategies.ย There was one level where you had to choose a particular Wii character, and then a few levels later, you would have to identify that person in a crowd scene.ย It made sense to pick a character who stands out in a crowd, like one with a colourful hat.ย When Jen hit that level she picked the most generic character to find later.ย I thought that was odd.
Find Mii
โWhy did you pick that one?โ I asked.ย โThat will be hard to find in a crowd.โ
She didnโt answer.ย She didnโt even notice I was speaking.ย I just sat and watched her.ย She continued playing.
When she got to the level where she had to pick out the character she had chosen earlier, she was very confused.
โWhat?โ she said.ย โI didnโt pick anybody yet.โ
โYes you did,โ I answered.ย โDonโt you remember?ย I thought it was strange that you picked such an ordinary looking character.โ
โNo I didnโtโฆโ she answered but there was worry in her voice.
I had my suspicions.ย I got with her parents and we eventually talked her into going to see the doctor.ย She was very resistant.ย I can understand this.ย Nobody likes finding out there is something wrong with them.ย Itโs frightening.ย But so is watching someone you love suffering.
Nobody was particularly surprised when she was diagnosed with epilepsy.ย It fit what we were seeing.ย What I had witnessed was what the doctor called an โabsence seizureโ.ย I call it โzoning outโ because thatโs how it looks to an outsider.ย It looks like someone has completely spaced out, staring at nothing.
I thought, optimistically, that a neurologist would put Jen on some medication and she would be OK.ย Most people are.ย I had a friend who also had โzone outโ seizures, but when he took his medication he was fine.ย When it comes to Jenโs health I always try to be optimistic.ย It could, after all, have been a whole lot worse.ย Unfortunately my optimism was misplaced.ย This was not going to be an easy fix.
There have been so many ups and downs since that day in 2008.ย From the happiness at finding a neurologist, to the despair of side effects and pills just flat-out not working.ย From people who donโt understand and mock epilepsy, to accidents and injury.ย There have been so many.ย These incidents have taken their toll not only on Jen, but on me.ย People forget that the role of the supporter is no easy task.
As 2008 went on, the wedding loomed closer.ย Jen prepared to move to Kitchener and start her new life with me.ย One of her former co-workers at Brampton Transit thought epilepsy was terribly amusing.ย โWouldnโt it be funny if she had a seizure at her wedding!โ one said, not knowing she was overheard.ย As if getting married and moving wasnโt stressful enough!
But we made it.ย We had an awesome wedding, and no seizures.ย We were very fortunate to be surrounded by the best of family and friends.
Jen moved to Kitchener and three months later had full time employment with Research in Motion, aka Blackberry (before they went tits up).ย She worked really hard and was very proud to get that job, and rightfully so.ย One of the perks to working there (of many including a custom R.I.M. Monopoly board that we treasure) were their company concerts.ย They had thrown private parties featuring Aerosmith one year, and the Tragically Hip another.
Their next employee concert wasnโt a private one, but still free:ย U2.ย U2 had signed a big endorsement deal and were on TV every night advertising Blackberry phones.ย Jen was very much looking forward to seeing U2, but with their light show, could she even go at all?ย Imagine her heartbreak when her doctor told her it was very unwise to go and see U2 in concert.
Concerts in general were a problem.ย She hasnโt been able to go and see one since we saw Russell Peters early in our marriage.ย We tried to see the Trailer Park Boys too. ย As soon as cameras started flashing, she had a seizure.ย She was taken out in a wheelchair and we didnโt see the rest of the show.ย Movies were also impossible.ย We had to leave The Muppets before the show even started.ย It has been difficult getting used to what we can and cannot do with her epilepsy.
She cannot drive.ย But she has to get out and have a life.ย Staying inside all day is a sure recipe for depression.ย She does her best.ย She takes busses, taxis and Uber.ย Unfortunately seizures can happen anywhere.ย Over the last few years I have received dozens upon dozens of phone calls telling me that my wife had a seizure on a bus.ย Off to the hospital we go, where weโd wait several hours for a discharge.ย Now, if she is able, she tries to insist on not being taken to the hospital.ย They cannot do anything for her there.ย We know this from experience.
Unfortunately seizures on a bus sometimes mean falling on a bus.ย Jen has had so many injuries from seizure related falls over the years:ย concussions, twisted ankles and knees, and a fractured knee.ย Sheโs no longer able to walk without assistance.ย When on a bus, she has to fight for a disabled seat.ย If sheโs not seated on a bus, itโs not safe.ย And too many entitled children (and adults) refuse to move for her. ย A couple weeks ago she was told to move from the accessible seat to make room for a bloody shopping cart. ย An inanimate object. ย It is frustrating.ย When she falls, it is heartbreaking.
One evening (December 11 2011) after a bus seizure, one of those entitled kids (old enough to know better) thought he needed to take pictures of my wife on the stretcher for his friends.ย He is lucky that I donโt believe in physical confrontation.ย If I did, there would have been two people on stretchers. ย Jen’s mom said, “What is that kid doing?”ย I went over to speak with him as he was walking away.
“Hey!ย What are you doing?” I shouted.ย He ignored me and continued to walk away.ย “Hey you!ย What do you think you’re doing!” I repeated as I followed.ย For a second time he ignored me.ย Once again I shouted, “You, taking the picture!ย What do you think you’re doing?”
“Taking a picture for my friend,” he answered.
“Why, because it’s really funny?”ย I asked.
“What do you care?” he retorted.
“That’s my wife!” I said.
“I didn’t take a picture of her face, why are you being rude?”
Rude?ย Seriously? ย “I don’t care!” I yelled.
“Fuck you,” the little disrespectful dink said, and walked away.ย I returned the sentiment, but I could not believe it. ย I’m the rude one?
When she’s taking public transit now, we have a routine.ย When she is out on her own, she texts me every 30 minutes to check in so I donโt have to worry. ย When she canโt get somewhere because of an emergency vehicle with flashing lights, she can text me and we can figure out what to do.ย Aside from the falls and injuries, we have had some scares.ย I once witnessed her almost wandering straight out into traffic while picking her up from work.ย Sheโs had her shopping bags ripped off at the mall.ย Sheโs had people point and laugh because they think sheโs walking around dazed from drinking too much.ย We have had to develop thicker skins.
What about all the doctors and specialists?ย Her first neurologist couldnโt figure out what was wrong with her and dropped her as a patient.ย Finding a neurologist is hard. There are no neurologists here in Kitchener. ย You have to go to Mississauga, London, or Toronto. ย Eventually we did the only thing we had left to try:ย Go to an emergency room in Mississauga where they have neurologists, tell them this girl keeps having seizures, and she needs to see one. ย It was her family doctor who instructed us to do this. ย Of course emergency didnโt want to deal with that, but that was the only option we had left.ย They changed their tune when we told them that she had a seizure right there in their waiting room.ย Now we have a new neurologist, and he is in the process of putting her through a battery of tests.ย Surgery is the option on the table, but there is a medication we havenโt tried yet that we are going to ask for:ย medical cannabis.ย That might be the miracle cure we are still hoping for.
In the meantime, we continue to fight on.ย We take inspiration from figures like Prince and Neil Young, both epileptics who overcame their illness to perform for millions on stage.ย We try to find the humour in life.ย We have to.ย We donโt have a choice in the matter.ย With that in mind, Iโll leave you with some of the epilepsy moments we have been able to laugh at.
When Jen comes out of a seizure, her senses all seem enhanced.ย Her vision can be like looking at the world through binoculars.ย She can see incredible detail and very vivid colours.ย After a seizure the world seems vibrantly bright.ย And unfortunately for her, sometimes the first thing she sees after a seizure is my face.ย So I canโt help but laugh by some of those post-seizure observations sheโs made:
โWow, your beard is WHITE!โ
โYour nose is pointyโฆand triangle shaped!โ
A variation of the above, โYour nose is pointyโฆand tear-drop shaped!โ
I have a glow-in-the-dark Albert Einstein T-shirt that I love.ย One night after a seizure, it was glowing away in the dark.ย Thatโs when she observed, โYour tummy is glassโฆon fire!โย I guess thatโs what glowing Albert looked like in the dark!
We will continue to fight this disease, and we will continue to try and see the light side of things.ย Itโs the only way.ย If we didnโt try to laugh at it, it would have beaten both of us by now.ย Thatโs not going to happen.ย We have worked and fought way too hard since 2008.
In the meantime, we will continue to raise awareness.ย Do you or your kids have any articles of clothing with flashing lights?ย Do you take flash photographs in public?ย These things can, and will, trigger a seizure.ย Try to be mindful of your surroundings and the people around you.ย And please, if an epileptic asks you to stop taking flash photos, just turn off your flash.ย Donโt tell them to โfuck offโ because โthatโs not my problemโ, as we have been told recently.ย Be a good person, and do your good deed for the day. ย Do your part to stop a seizure before it happens.
For a lot of people, the greatest day in their lives is the day they got married. Perhaps it can only be topped by the birth of a child. I donโt have any kids, so for me, the greatest day of my life really is the day I got married: August 31 2008.
I thought it was going to be tough competition though. August 30 2008 was a pretty fun day, so much so that I honestly didnโt think the wedding day itself could top it.
The 30th began early. The wedding was in Mississauga Ontario, an hourโs drive away. My best man Peter picked me up in his silver Camaro kit car, with a Corvette engine. Peter doesnโt own it anymore (it became a money machine) but my God did we have some good times in that car. That thing ran so low it felt like your ass was scraping bottom.
Before checking into the hotel, we had to take part in a bachelor ritual, that being lunch. Wings at Hooters! It was my first and thus far only time at a Hooters and it was pretty much everything I expected it to be. All the clientele inside were male. The waitress took our order with her leg up on our table. The wings were greasy goodness, not the best Iโve ever had, but certainly worth the stop at Hooters. Thatโs the real reason people go to Hooters, right?
Peter warmed up his GPS and we headed off to the hotel. We didnโt have anything special planned. We wouldnโt need a dinner โ the wings and leftover wings took care of that problem. We didnโt need to go and buy anything for the wedding at the last minute. But we did have some work to do.
Peter had a hockey bag with his PS2 in it, and all the accessories needed to play Rock Band: Two guitars, microphone, and drum kit. I brought some of my favourite wedding related movies: Old School, Wedding Crashers and more. We had a fun night planned for when Jen and her maid of honour Lara arrived. We just needed to set it all up.
These new hotel TVs didnโt have any RCA jacks, or anywhere we could plug in the PS2. We sat there baffled, two guys (one an electrician!) who had spent decades hooking stuff up to TV sets, and we didnโt know how to proceed. Admitting defeat was not like Peter.
We needed an RCA to coaxial adapter. Unfortunately finding such a thing on a holiday Sunday in Mississauga wasnโt going to be easy. We began making phone calls: Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. Nobody knew what โRCA to coaxialโ meant so we once again warmed up the GPS and headed down Dixie Road looking for stores.
As predicted, Best Buy and Circuit City had nothing, and the staff there looked at us as if we had stepped out of a time machine asking to use their telegraph machine. Our best bet wasnโt going to be one of those big chain stores specializing in HDMI. We ended up finding the adapter (for around $50) at a small mom & pop style tech store, but we did find it! Back in the Camarovette, back to the hotel.
Problem #2: those hotels really, really donโt want you to hook up your own entertainment. We couldnโt easily disconnect the coaxial cable. It had a protective metal sheath on both ends protecting it from tampering. You couldnโt even unplug it. Not without some tools, sweat and effort. I was ready to give up, but as turns out, Peter just doesnโt go anywhere without his tool kit.
He had that cable ripped out in no time and protective sheath removed. Before too long we had beaten the system and were playing PS2 right there in the hotel. Perseverance!
Jen and Lara arrived, as did Jenโs whole family from Ottawa. They all went out to a nice dinner together, but Peter and I were still recovering from our Hooters wings coma so we stayed in. I think Jenโs cousin Joey would rather have been playing Rock Band with us!
When they came back from dinner, our night really began. And it was an absolutely blast. Four best friends in a hotel room with chicken wings and video games and movies. We are simple people with simple needs. Those needs involve pretending to play drums to Black Sabbathโs โParanoidโ while someone else pretends to play guitar. Song after song, we had so much fun that night that my sides hurt from laughing.
By the time we all realized we needed to call it a night or be too tired to get married the next day, it was a completely successful evening. I wasnโt at all nervous. I was so hyped that I was strangely calm. I couldnโt wait to get married. No cold feet here, not when I knew so many awesome people had my back. I went to bed that night thinking, โThis has truly been the most fun night of my life. There is no way tomorrow can top it.โ
Of course, the wedding day did top it. The only thing better than a party for four was a party for 100 of our closest family and friends.
Planning on a road trip involving a hotel stay? Then be like Peter and come prepared. If you canโt hook up your Playstation to a hotel TV like we did, then you might need some tools!
