EPISODE 50! The Cassettes of Dr. Kathryn on Grab A Stack of Rock, with Jex Russell and John T. Snow

GRAB A STACK OF ROCK With Mike and Jex Russell

Episode 50:  The Cassettes of Dr. Kathryn

Welcome to the 50th episode of Grab A Stack of Rock!  Special occasions require special guests.

Dr. Kathryn recently dug up her 80s cassette collection.  Like her brother, she was interested in collecting rarities and B-sides on singles.  We will see a number of cassette singles from the pop rock realm including Bryan Adams, Cheap Trick, Glass Tiger, and more.  John Snow, Jex Russell and I will also be bringing the vintage cassette tapes for this special show & tell.

Additionally we have a slideshow from Tri-Con at the Museum in Kitchener last month, where Dr. K met some celebrities from Degrassi Jr. High, and saw some cool props from Doctor Who and Star Trek.  There may have been some Mandalorian sightings as well!

Tune in tonight and take part in the comments with our special guests and cool collectibles from the 1980s.

#1108: Oojaboojagan

RECORD STORE TALES #1108: Oojaboojagan

Creative relationships are something I have always craved in my life.  In these pages, we’ve shared the stories of the legendary Bob Schipper, my childhood friend with whom I created so many adventures, games, characters and art.  Our media was written, it was drawn, it was recorded to audio and even video.  Any way we could create, we did.  We made music videos, documentary style videos, comic books, audio skits and so much more.  When childhood came to its inevitable end, a hole in my life broke open.  I had no creative partner anymore, and I still craved to express myself with someone.  As many friends came into my life, I failed to find someone who wanted to sit down and write or record.

In 2023 I met a new friend named Jex Russell.  We “officially” became friends on social media on February 5 2023.  Even though there’s quite an age difference between us, we get along well and have great creative chemistry.  Although distance defies us, we have managed to make some fun videos together, and have also collaborated with the written word.  He reminds me a lot of Bob Schipper.  Like Bob, we’ve invented some of our own gibberish.

Bob Schipper example:  when we were kids, around 1983, Bob created a character named Ooja.  Ooja was a monster we had to defeat.  In our winter adventures, a giant snowbank worked as an Ooja monster we could pummel.  That kept us going for an afternoon.  I found out later on that the name Ooja was based on the Ouija board that Bob found in his basement.  It once belonged to his older brother or sister.  He didn’t know how it was pronounced, so he called it “Ooja”.  That became a word for us to use.

Jex Russell example:  upon our first works together, Jex began co-hosting episodes of Grab A Stack of Rock with me.  On his first real co-hosting gig, he was on his way to his parents’ place to stream from their house that weekend.  He sent me updates via videos of his travels that day.  Passing theough Haute-Aboujagane, New Brunswick, I had a giggle at the name of the place.  It sounded funny to me.  I sent a message back to Jex:  “What was that place called, Oojaboojagan or something??”

Jex found my mangling of Haute-Aboujagane to be funny in return, and suddenly, we had our own word:  “Oojaboojagan”.

You may have heard us use this word before if you’ve been paying attention.  Once again, I twisted it around and gave it a new meaning.  I started calling Jex “my Oojaboojgan”, meaning “brother” or “friend”.  Now, he’s my oojaboojagan.  A creative partner that I value for friendship and the ability to collaborate with my scattershot mind.

Check Jex out at Jexcalibur.wordpress.com, and tell him that Oojaboojagan sent you!  You’ll be seeing more of our creative uniqueness in 2024.

Tim’s Vinyl Confessions: Ep. 490: Top 10 Least-Favoured KISS Songs – with Tim, Mike, Jex and Will

Says Tim:

This is exactly the type of episode I’ve long shied away from, something that could be seen as negative. However, we sure had a lot of fun putting this together, and filming it.

Here, Will sits in TVC Headquarters with me, and Jex and Ladano join us (with some written help from Matt) to cover our personal least favourite Kiss songs. I feel it is worth repeating: we are ALL massive Kiss fans, these are our opinions and no one else’s.

Your comments are welcome but please no personal attacks. None of what we say is meant as an affront to anyone’s personal tastes. Having said that, it was unquestionably fun to have a little dig at those Kiss songs that as fans, have always rubbed us the wrong way (which sounds like a discarded Gene Simmons lyric from the 80s).

The Y&T Album Review Book Chat with author Tim Durling, and contributors John Snow, Jex Russell and Mike Ladano

The very first Y&T book is outDown For the Count:  The Y&T Album Review is the name, and Tim Durling is the author.  Tim was kind enough to join Jex, John and I on a Friday night to talk about it.  Mr. Durling’s humble nature and musical knowledge was on full display as we discussed:

  • How the book came together, and why it has a discussion-style format.
  • Assembling the panel.
  • Y&T’s lack of big-time success.  The why’s, the wherefore’s, and the what-might-have-beens.
  • Fans in waiting:  turning new people on to Y&T.
  • Contacting Hugh Syme.
  • Working with Sean Kelly.
  • The importance of artwork, a good logo, and music videos.
  • The Y&T discography.

Please support the music community and check out the book if you can!  We are all very proud of Down For the Count, and you might just discover a new favourite band.  That’s all we really hope for in the end.

Thanks again to Tim, John and Jex for a great show.  Tune in next week for a pre-recorded solo show called Too Much Music.

Go for the throat!

Episode 46:  Down For the Count with Tim Durling and Friends

The very first Y&T book is outDown For the Count:  The Y&T Album Review is the name of the book, and you can get yours on Amazon right now.

Joining us this week is series regular, and now author of two books, Tim Durling!  Why Y&T?  Why a book about this band, and their discography?   It is true that Y&T never made the impact that they seemed destined for.  We’ll discuss this and much more:  the nuts and bolts of publishing a rock book and assembling the cast of characters who helped along the way.

Speaking of characters, co-hosting this week will be book contributors John T. Snow and Jex Russell.  How did they get involved, and what was their part to play?  How did Tim get Sean Kelly and Hugh Syme to contribute?  Find out tonight, and by all means pick up this excellent book today.

2023 in Review with Jason Drury, Rob Daniels, Mike & the Mad Metal Man

‘Twas a warm and cozy gathering of film-addicted friends, reminiscing upon favourites in the year 2023.  With Jason Drury joining from the UK, Harrison from Australia, and Mike & Rob in Canada, it was a a truly intercontinental show.

We took a look at some new musical arrivals (signed Blaze Bayley, Rock Candy Ronnie James Dio, some sweet soundtracks on CD) and some books as well.

Though we always try to promote the physical media on Grab A Stack of Rock, the thoughtful conversation was what made this episode special.  Specifically, we went down the Doctor Who rabbit hole and touched on what is happening with the show today.  We also praised Ray Stevenson in Ahsoka, and lambasted a few of the Marvel products out today.  Saved from the hot seat was Loki Season 2, which Jason and I both thought was a high water mark for the franchise.

Controversially, Jason weighed in on UK fish & chips vs. their Canadian counterparts.

Happy new year my friends, we’ll see you in 2024.  Next week:  Down For the Count, with Tim Durling and Jex Russell.

Return of the Drury: Film and Soundtrack Experts Jason Drury and Robert Daniels on Grab A Stack of Rock for 2023 in Review

GRAB A STACK OF ROCK With Mike and the Mad Metal Man

Episode 45:  Return of the Drury

Tonight, film and soundtrack expert Jason Drury is back on the show from five time zones away!  All the way in Ramsgate UK, Jason will be burning the midnight oil with Robert Daniels, Jex Russell and Harrison Kopp tonight.

Tonight we will just be catching up with friends, talking everything that we enjoyed in 2023.  (I will be saving my Top Five albums list for January 1.)  It’s a casual show and those are often the best kind.

Please join us tonight and welcome Jason back on the show!

Six Horsemen Bring Their Top Five Metallica Deep Cuts to Grab A Stack of Rock

Metallica deep cuts?  What are the rules then?  Well, rules didn’t matter at the end of the day; we just picked a bunch of tunes we liked a lot.  Your panel was:

We had some brilliant thrashers, a few curveballs…and definitely a couple surprises.  I feel everyone defended their choices ably, however I was the recipient of a bit of roasting in the comments section.  Repeatedly.  Did I deserve it?  Probably.

We also took an “Ask Harrison” question from Peter Kerr of Rock Daydream Nation, and did some very cool unboxings.  There was a bit of “repetition” tonight, but a good time was had by all.  Thank you for watching.

A week off next week — super secret regal recording with Peter Kerr instead!  We’ll be back December 15.

Exploiting Their Supremacy: Top Five Metallica Deep Cuts on Grab A Stack of Rock

GRAB A STACK OF ROCK With Mike and the Mad Metal Man

Episode 43:  Top 5 METALLICA Deep Cuts

It is finally time to do Metallica some Justice!

We planned to do a Metallica show back on May 5, but regular readers know what happened that day.  I had to cancel, and deal with a former co-host instead.  There always seems to be something getting in the way of Metallica.  This week we lost my dear Uncle Paul, but the show will go on, and I will pay tribute to this great man on Friday night.

Cinco de Listo is back!  We wait with baited (Motor)breath to see what Top Five Deep Cuts our expert panel will be presenting this time!  On hand will be:

We are going simple with the rules.  A “deep cut” in this case simply means a non-single.  There will be lots of complaints I’m sure, but let’s focus on the great songs instead!  Hopefully we will name some tunes you absolutely need to hear.

Will Justice be done?  Our Merry Band of Metal Fans will do out best tonight at 8:00 PM sharp, Eastern Standard Time.

Get Up and make it work! Top Five Van Halen Bangers, our dream Best Of All Worlds setlist, and much more!

And the cradle DID rock, for tonight, four rock music fans revealed their Top Five Van Halen bangers.  ‘Twas brilliant to see.  Harrison Kopp was in classic Kontrarian mode as you will see with his list.  The first disqualification in the history of the show!  Harrison redeemed himself later, and his #1 pick was one I was onside with.

The new guy PLA brought with him a love of music that goes back to the teen years.  Jex’s good friend was a blast on the show, and he is welcome back any time.  The wonderful thing here is that years ago, Jex had the foresight to record PLA’s reaction to the Van Halen banger “Get Up” on video.  We ran that video tonight, and it really captured the spirit of what a Van Halen banger does.

We dug deep with deep cuts and hits.  We showed off rare CDs, vinyl, and even a cassette.  I presented my dream Best Of All Worlds setlist.  We discussed the tour, pros and cons, and our panel was mostly pro.  The comments were divided.  Peter Kerr was anti-tour, while Chris P was very pro.

Van Halen praise, love, and appreciation were in plentiful supply on this episode.  Take a glimpse at our collections and please enjoy our lists.  There were a number of duplicate songs, and some brilliant picks.  If you are interested in Van Halen but don’t know where to start…grab a coffee and listen to us blather on all night about a band we really love.

See ya next week.
