REVIEW: Ozzy Osbourne – Under Cover (2005 Japanese import)

Purchased this year at the Toronto Musical Collectibles Record & CD Sale.

OZZY OSBOURNE – Under Cover (2005 Japanese CD/DVD set)

I want to know who thought this album was a good idea to release. Β Sure, we know Ozzy will do pretty much anything. Β He even appeared on a tribute album to Black Sabbath (Nativity In Black Vol. 2). Β So why not have Ozzy cover a bunch of songs that, by and large, the world didn’t need him to cover?

“SHARON!”

I’ve never thought much of this album, and I think you can gather why on the first track “Rocky Mountain Way” (Joe Walsh). Β Why did this song need to be redone, metalized, and howled upon by Ozzy Osbourne? Β It’s awful. Β The female backing vocals are totally out of place, the changes made to song are unnecessary, and the vocal is stale. Β The only positive thing I will say is that Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) plays on Under Cover, and he’s the only thing redeeming it. Β His slide and talk box solos on “Rocky Mountain Way” are swampy and great.

Whether Ozzy covers the Beatles (a pukey echo-drenched “In My Life) or Cream (“Sunshine of YourΒ Love”) or the StonesΒ (“Sympathy for the Devil”), nothing of value is added to the song. Β It’s assembly line rock. Β There are no innovations or interesting slants. Β “Sunshine of YourΒ Love” is altered to resemble Sabbath’s “N.I.B.” which doesn’t help matters at all. Β Ozzy even does two solo John Lennon songs (“Woman” and “Working Class Hero”). Β I get that Ozzy has a connection to the lyrics to “Working Class Hero” and is a huge fan of Lennon. Β That doesn’t mean he should try doing his own version. Β Most songs don’t benefit from being metalized. Β I’ve even heard a good metalized cover of “21st Century Schizoid Man” better than Ozzy’s.

Best tune (only good tune): Β “Fire” originally by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown.

OZZY UNDER COVER_0003Special guests: Leslie West plays some smokin’ axe on the cover of his own “Mississippi Queen”. Β Ian Hunter joins Ozzy on “All the Young Dudes” but doesn’t do much other than shout along. Β Others such as Gregg Bissonnette (David Lee Roth) and Joe Bonamassa are credited on the album, with no indication of what they did on which tracks. Β Maybe Bissonnette was hired solely to play cowbell. Β Who knows?

The final rip off to fans is that almost all of Under Cover was previously released on Ozzy’s Prince of Darkness box set earlier thatΒ year! Β Many Ozzy fans such as myself picked that one up for its numerous long-sought rarities. Β Β  When Under Cover was released as its own album, four new recordings were added to make you buy it again: “Rocky Mountain Way”, “Sunshine of Your Love”, “Woman”, and “Go Now”. If you have Prince of Darkness, then you already own over 75% of Under Cover.

The Japanese bonus track was daughter Kelly Osbourne’s cover of Black Sabbath’s ballad “Changes”, with dear old dad singing with her, and lyrics adapted to suit. Β If you were one of those (I hope not) who bought Kelly’s 2002 album Shut Up, then you already have this. Β But like most Ozzy fans, I already have this song on the Prince of DarknessΒ set. Β This version also comes with a bonus Β region 2 DVD: the music video for “In My Life” (whoop-de-do) and a long (about 45 minutes I think) feature called “Dinner with Ozzy and Friends”. Β You might recognize a couple of these friends. Β Road stories are shared, the funniest ones involving Ozzy being mistaken for Meat Loaf, and Lemmy for Willie Nelson. Β And there’s the infamous story of Zakk Wylde and a cork. Β Finally, the two sided DVD also has the entire album in “enhanced stereo”.

T-Rev, Wes, Doug and IΒ had a great time at the Toronto Musical Collectibles Record & CD Sale 2014. Trevor came home with some kind of Asian import of Foo Fighters’ In Your Honor with at least a dozen bonus tracks. He also scored a cool silver Grand Funk LP with a round cover. Wes stocked up on Tom Petty vinyl.

My treasures are below. Β Let’s start with the Japanese imports! Β Yes, the same vendor was there. Β I probably cleared out his best stuff last year, but he still had some good ones left for me.

Japanese imports purchased:

  • Ozzy Osbourne – Under Cover ($25 with obi strip intact) Β I am well on record as not being a fan of this album. Β But it’s one of only two Ozzy albums that I didn’t own. Β Finding a Japanese version made it easy to justify for myΒ collection. Β The bonus track is “Changes” with Kelly Osbourne, but I had that already on the Prince of Darkness box set. Β This comes with a region 2 DVD.
  • Europe – Start From the Dark (sealed, $20) Β I already had this album as a bonus CD within Europe’s Live From the Dark DVD set. Β The Japanese get two live tracks from Sweden Rock 2004: Β “Seven Doors Hotel” and “Wings Of Tomorrow”.
  • White Wolf – Endangered Species (sealed, $20) Last year I bought Standing Alone on vinyl, this year I got Endangered Species! Β I always liked that song “She.” Β There are no bonus tracks on it but it’s so hard to find this on CD at all, let alone Japanese.
  • Paul Gilbert – Get Out of My Yard (sealed, $20) I’ve long been a fan of Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big), and he’s a cult hero in Japan. Β I know his solo stuff is pretty out there. Β Although I have tracks of his on guitar compilations, this is the first solo album of his that I have found.
  • Aerosmith – “Pink” (sealed CD single, $15) In Record Store Tales Part 42, I made fun of the “Barefoot DJ” because he was looking for this Aerosmith dud. Β Regardless, I’m probably most excited about this CD. Β If there’s one thing rarer than Japanese CDs, it might be Japanese CD singles. Β They’re produced in even more limited number. Β I won’t get allΒ the B-sides for “Pink” on this CD single, but it has plenty of tracks that I believe are exclusive to this disc.
  • Aerosmith – “Amazing” (CD single, $5 with obi strip intact) I had a domestic copy of this CD with the exact same tracks, just in a different order. Β I wasn’t sure if I had it or not when I bought it, but for $5 I figured it’s still a win-win situation. Β It’s in mint condition and I paid a fair price for it.

Other CDs purchased:

  • Anthrax – We’ve Come For You All (sealed German import, $10) I’ve always wanted this album, and I always promised myself I’d get it if I found an import with bonus tracks for a good price. Β I have done that now.
  • Deep Purple – Smoke On My Mega-mix ($5) This is a bootleg. Β I bought this from the same guy who sold me the Aerosmith “Amazing” single. Β Years and years ago, there was a Deep Purple compilation LP called Anthology. Β If you bought that andΒ fourΒ other singles, you could mail away for a “Smoke On My Mega-mix” exclusive single. Β This bootleg has that track, and a whole bunch of other rarities. Β One such track is Deep Purple Mk V’s “Fire, Ice & Dynamite” which is only on a DVD called New,Β Live & Rare.
  • Iron Maiden – Revenge Is Living In the PastΒ (bootleg from A Matter of Life and Death tour, $40) Β This is a beautifully packaged triple-gatefold live bootleg. Β One of the few recent tours that Maiden have not released a live album from wasΒ A Matter of Life and Death. Β On that tour, they played the whole album live, and now I have it. Β It’s really nicely packaged and I’m looking forward to listening to it soon.

“Holy Grails” seen but not purchased:

“Holy Grails” bought:

  • None

One funny story: At record shows, you always find vendors who “know it all”. T-Rev found a CD copy of Kim Mitchell’s self-titled solo EP for $5, but it was burned. Trevor asked, “Do you have the original CD of this? Because if you do, I will buy it.” The vendor swore up and down that no such CD exists. Trevor said, “Yes it does, my buddy has it.” He’s right, because I am that buddy. Here are pictures of my copy of that EP; Amazon are asking over $100 for it, since it went out of print. Photographic proof that it exists below (Wounded Bird CD edition):

Here’s a list of the next bunch of shows. Β Attendance is pending funds:

  • London, April 18 2014 (Centennial Hall, 550 Wellington St.)
  • Cambridge, April 27 2014 (Holiday Inn, 200 Holiday Inn Dr.)
  • Woodstock, (Nostalgia Show & Sale), May 25 2014 (Woodstock Fairgrounds, 875 Nellis St.)
  • Ancaster, (Nostalgia Show & Sale), June 22 2014 (Ancaster Fairgrounds, 630 Trinity Rd.)
  • Mississauga, October 19 2014 (Capitol Cenvention Centre, 6435 Dixie Rd.)
  • London, October 26 2014Β (Centennial Hall, 550 Wellington St.)

All four of us had a blast. Β In the car, Wes commented, “I don’t think I’ve ever had musical conversations like this before!” Β Then, I found something out. Β Last year, Wes gave me a copy of Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”Β  He did this on condition that I rip and email him the tracks. Β I did that as soon as I got home, only I sentΒ them via Trevor, since I didn’t have Wes’ email.

Wes said he never got them. Β “I emailed the tracks like a year ago,” I replied. Β I explained that Trevor instructedΒ to just send them to him, and he’d forwardΒ them along. Β That never happened. Β Wes said, “All this time I thought it was Ladano’s fault, turns out it’s my friend right here!” and points at Trevor.

This is turning into an annual event. Β We might make it semi-annual by checking out the October show. Β I’ll be sure to be you posted!
