Tenacious D’s Nigel Tufnel Top Ten Tracks…tonight on the LeBrain Train

The LeBrain Train: 2000 Words or More with Mike & Friends

Episode 110 – Nigel Tufnel Top Ten-acious D Tracks

This is just a “tribute”!ย  Well, no, not really.ย  But it will be great fun regardless.ย  Thank Uncle Meat, as he arranged this week’s episode and guest himself.ย  Tonight, Meat and Kevin from Canadian Grooves are joining me to talk about the notoriously tenacious comedy-rock duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass.ย  The greatest band in the world?ย  Perhaps — which is why we’re doing Top 11 lists of this band’s greatest songs.

The duo met in 1986 and started playing gigs 1994, with their name a reference to the basketball term “tenacious defence”.ย  Their demo led to the short lived TV series, befriending Dave Grohl, and eventually their debut album in 2001.ย  It’s been pure legend since!

Sourcing tunes from their four albums, many singles, HBO TV show and more, you can count of lots of laughs tonight.ย  As usual, you’ll want to catch this live!

Rapid Fire Friday with Rob, Harrison & Meat

A wonderful social gathering tonight with some rapid-fire action!ย ย Robert Daniels stepped up to the plate at short notice to talk music, movies and TV.ย  We were joined by Harrison the Mad Metal Man, and Uncle Meat for some quiz fun.ย  It was an impromptu night of loose and entertaining chatter among friends.

Topics discussed:

  • Star Trek: Picard, The Original Series, and Animated
  • The new Ghost album Impera
  • Soundtracks
  • Van Halen, Roth & Easter
  • The Batman
  • And a random quiz of 11 questions that included audience participation answers!
  • Tons of fun!

We also played a bunch of music including the debut of a track called “Bones ‘N’ Clothes” by Plasticine, featuring Rob Szabo and Steve Strongman.ย  This song was very well received by our viewing audience and will definitely be heard again.

Thanks for watching!

A Vision In Sound: Celebrating 2 years of Rob Daniels and the LeBrain Train

It was my pleasure to honour the man who got the ball rolling for us back in the very beginning: Robert Daniels from Visions In Sound.ย  Because he inspired the LeBrain Train in the first place, I decided to share this anniversary special with him!

Not only did we surprise Rob with a brand new Tee Bone Erickson song called “A Vision In Sound”, but we also brought in his long time friend Erik Woods to enjoy the tribute.

Joining Rob, Erik and myself this evening were:

Pre-show viewers got to see a really cool gift unboxed from Aaron, Mr. KeepsMeAlive himself!

Show highlights included clips, although you may be well advised to skip the middle one, “The Author Reads:ย  Record Store Tales Part 7, A Shitty Story”.ย  Lots of gratitude to Uncle Meat who was the center of several clips we played.ย  Added bonus:ย  a vintage video and story from the Meat Man!

You will be able to buy the track “A Vision In Sound” from Tee Bone’s Bandcamp site soon.

Thanks for watching!ย  If you didn’t, don’t hesitate to see it below.ย  Another big thanks to Marco the Contrarian for sharing the show with the Contrarians Patreons.

NEXT WEEK:

April 1 – 7:00 PM – The Prank Show with Chris Thuss

COMING UP:

April 23 – 12:00 noon – Polychuck’s back!

Thanks for all the love! 10 Years of Record Store Tales on the LeBrain Train

A huge thank you to my co-host Harrison the Mad Metal Man, and my guests Tim Durling, Brian Richards, and Uncle Meat!ย  Being awash in the love and admiration of my friends is a really special thing, and I thank you for making my 10 Year Anniversary show perfect.ย  I was worried tonight’s show would be a little narcissistic.ย  Perhaps it is, but it did my soul a lot of good.ย  I feel energised to keep writing.

Highlights of tonight:

  • Some fascinating Tim Durling talk about rare 8-tracks and his book Unspooled.ย  Tim’s book features a previously unreleased EXCLUSIVE chapter of Record Store Tales, only available by buying Unspooled.ย  (Copies still available.)
  • Brian Richards reviewing the new KISS official bootleg CD.
  • Brian also showed off his Top Five Metal Compilations.
  • We revealed the true identity of one-time commenter “nolongeracustomer“.
  • Top Five Record Store Tales from Lana – a list I appreciated so much.
  • Top Five lists from Harrison and I – Reviews, and Meat posts.
  • The return of the Nigel Tufnel Top Ten – special lists from Harrison and Mike.

Thanks to my guests, my co-host and my friends who made this all the wonderful experience that it has been.ย  I appreciate you all.

Robert Lawson & the School of Jazz – Saturday LeBrain Train

Tremendous fun and a lot of learning tonight in the School of Jazz!ย ย Author Robert Lawson has a jazz collection to die for and we got a small taste of it tonight.ย  The panel for Saturday Jazz consisted of four experts and one newbie:

  • Yours truly (LeBrain – jazz novice)
  • Uncle Meat (jazz expert)
  • Dr. Dave (an actual doctor)
  • Aaron (Keeps Me Alive resident jazzbo)
  • Robert Lawson (serious author and hardcore jazz collector)

As the talk veered from Miles Davis to Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and more, my wishlist grew and grew and grew.ย  Stay tuned to the end to see some of Robert’s most enviable box sets.

As we often do, we started the show with some unboxings.ย  Check it all out below!ย  See you next week.

Upcoming schedule:

Friday March 11 – The 10 Year Anniversary Show – Record Store Tales and mikeladano.com (with Harrison and Tim Durling)

Friday March 25 – 2 Years of the LeBrain Train (with Tee Bone and Robert Daniels)

Saturday Jazz featuring Robert Lawson on a special LeBrain Train

The LeBrain Train: 2000 Words or More with Mike & Friends

Episode 100 โ€“ Saturday Jazz

When a guy with the musical intelligence and credentials of author Robert Lawson asks if he can participate in your Saturday jazz show, you say yes!

Much like Donnie in The Big Lebowski, I’m out of my element here.ย  A casual jazz fan like me cannot compete with the knowledge of the guests this week.ย  It’s a Cinco de Listo Top Five Jazz records and the panel consists of:

  • Yours truly (LeBrain – jazz novice)
  • Uncle Meat (jazz expert)
  • Dr. Dave (an actual doctor)
  • Aaron (Keeps Me Alive resident jazzbo)
  • Robert Lawson (serious author and hardcore jazz collector)

REVEALED! Top Five Ballads and the secret identity of “X” on the LeBrain Train!

An unprecedented episode with six killer lists and a mystery to boot!ย  Top Five Ballads.ย  As an added twist, tonight we added a secret guest to the panel, and the rest of the guys had to guess who this person was on their list alone!ย  Although I was worried they would guess the guest quite easily, that isn’t how it went down.

Who’s “X”?ย  Watch and find out!

Unfortunately this episode was also Chris Sarre’s least favourite show due to the big reveal, and he says he will never watch again!ย  Everyone else seemed to love it and I think we will try this again some time.

Thanks to everyone for hanging out tonight, it was a show I’ll remember a long time.

Top Five Ballads Remastered…with a touch of mystery! Tonight on the LeBrain Train

The LeBrain Train: 2000 Words or More with Mike & Friends

Episode 99 โ€“ Top Ballads…Remastered

On July 3 2020, we did the Nigel Tufnel Top Ten Ballads on the LeBrain Train with six sets of lists.ย  And it was great!ย  We had lists from Meat, Harrison, Holen, Darr, and Len Labelle.ย  Unfortunately due to Facebook Live and a bad internet connection, I find this show impossible to watch today.ย  Harrison and I have been trying to talk Meat into doing a “remastered” version of the show in the new Cinco De Listo format for a long time, and we finally twisted his arm.ย  The new panel tonight:

“X”?ย  That’s right.ย  This week’s show is not just a list show.ย  There will be a sixth panel member, and that member’s voice and likeness will be obscured for the whole countdown.ย  It will be up to the others to figure out who “X” is, and they have five songs with which to do it.

I love a mystery and I’m really looking forward to this!ย  Tune in tonight for six lists of awesome ballads, and a little Friday evening mystery too.ย  Where’s Mulder when you need him?

Don’t You Know These Are 2000 Lists? Top 5 from the year 2000 on the LeBrain Train

Lots of surprises and a couple F-bombs on the show this week!

Normally you would expectย Tim Durling (Tim’s Vinyl Confessions) and I to agree about everything.ย  This week, we did not!ย  Instead, Eric Litwiller and I matched nearly album for album.ย  Meanwhile, John T. Snow (2Loud2OldMusic) snuck in some really different picks.ย  Plenty of discussion, disagreement, love and laughs!

We started the show with an “ABSUะฏD” unboxing and a special surprise from Aaron!ย  Thanks for watching!ย  If you missed it you can catch it below.

Upcoming Schedule:

  • Friday February 25, 7:00 PM:ย  Top Ballads with Eric, John, Harrison, and Rob Daniels
  • Saturday February 26:ย  Tim’s Vinyl Confessions – Journey

  • Friday March 26, 7:00 PM:ย  Two Year Anniversary of the LeBrain Train with Tee Bone
  • Friday April 1, 7:00 PM:ย  The Prank Show featuring Michael Morwood and Chris Thuss

The Millennium Show: Top Five Albums from the year 2000

The LeBrain Train: 2000 Words or More with Mike & Friends

Episode 98 โ€“ The Millennium Show: Top Five Albums from the year 2000

A suggestion from the Meat Man — why not do our top albums from the year 2000?ย  The turn of the millennium was a weird time in metal.ย  A lot of bands were still suffering from the fallout of the past decade, while others were in the midst of big comebacks.ย  But there were so much more than just metal in 2000, as you will see with tonight’s lists!

The panel this evening:

Give ’em a follow while you’re at it, and make sure you don’t miss tonight’s show!ย  As always, the best way is to catch it live so you can participate in the comments.ย  And as usual, there will be special unboxings for those who show up early!ย  There could be something “ABSUะฏD” in there.
