Geoff Tate’s QUEENSRYCHE – “Cold” (2013 single)
Oh, how I wanted to hate this.
I don’t hate it. It has a catchy riff, a good vocal from Geoff Tate, a shredding guitar solo, and it’s not about spitting on people or knives. It sounds modern while still featuring a guitar riff or two. I don’t hate it like I hated, say, Tribe. I’m disappointed that it’s a little faceless and generic sounding.
The problem is that it doesn’t sound like Queensryche. It sounds like a Geoff Tate solo track. Probably the best Geoff Tate solo track that there’s been so far. But just a Geoff Tate solo track.
The blockheaded drums do not sound like the textured complexity of Queensryche. (Sounds like Simon Wright though.)
The piano is distracting, I kept thinking a phone was ringing somewhere in my house. It sounds like, “Hey, we have a keyboard player in our band.”
I love the guitar solo. It’s so tasty and good. Who is this? Kelly? Robert? Neither? What will this sound like when performed live without guest stars?
I don’t know if the mix is worth the brew-ha-ha that’s being made of it. It’s not to my taste personally but it sounds like they had a vision of a heavier than fuck sound and just kind of overdid it.
This track confirms that Tate is still capable of writing good music. It does not confirm that Tate still is capable of writing good Queensryche music. This is his Chinese Democracy. It has a vibe of, “Let’s saturate the song with everything from the biggest sounding drums to the fastest solo to a guy playing piano.” Let’s try anything.
Where the real Queensryche’s song, “Redemption”, sounded unmistakably like Queensryche, Tate’s reeks of contrivances. In the Battle of the Ryches, Round One, the original band comes out on top. Tateryche will have their supporters, but it is clear now that Queensryche is a band sound, not merely a singer.
2.5/5 stars

Well, you know, 2.5…that’s 50%…still a pass in many classes!
It’s a pass. I would have rated it maybe 3 or 3.5 if it was a solo track. As a Queensryche track, it doesn’t sound like them.

Same with me. I figure it’s because we tend to review the albums we own, therefore mostly albums that we like, right?

Ok … well … It certainly is much better than i thought this would be. However … I think we should remember this. This may end up being the “heaviest” song on the album. It certainly wouldnt surprise me. Im honestly surprised that you didnt rate this higher than 2.5. You say you would have given it a higher rating but it doesnt sound like “Queensryche”. But you couldnt have been expecting it to sound like older Queensryche could you? If anything .. it not sounding like older Queensryche actually gives this track some merit that I really didnt want to be giving to that Douche Bag Tate. Speaking of that douche … pretty apparent that his vocal range is severely limited. Everything here is in his new-found wheelhouse so to speak. Lots of studio vocal tricks happening here too. I have a feeling that if we heard him and just an acoustic guitar, with no effects … he might sound a bit like Bob Dylan now.
LikeLike
Of course I wasn’t expecting it to sound like older Queensryche. 2.5 stars is all it’s worth for being faceless, and more of the same old same old we’re used to hearing from Tate over the last 10 years.

I preferred this to the “real” Queensryche track. But it’s pretty average… faceless is a good word for it.

I actually liked this song. Must have been the best one Tate has come up with in many years. And if he had gone solo with it, I probably would had liked it more because, as you said, it doesn’t sound like Queensrÿche and the cover of the album says Queensrÿche.
I think I gave Frequency Unknown a 5/10, but if Tate would have released it as a solo album I might have given it a 6 or a secen, because it’s really not a crap album – but under the Queensrÿche moniker, it leaves a lot to be desired. Kind of like The Elder by Kiss or 1987 by Whitesnake. Both are really good efforts, but under the Kiss and Whitesnake names, they really don’t delivers.

Jon you should really post the link to your Freq. Unknown review, because the conversation there with Neue Regel was, dare I say it, almost overshadowing the review itself! It was good entertainment anyway. It’s how you earned the nickname “Mastermind” in the first place!
I agree with what you’re saying, about rating it higher if it was just a Tate release. And even though some people might find that kind of rating system biased, I will justify for myself as follows:
I expect a certain level of quality out of a Queensryche album, and I expect it to sound like the same band. No matter how much their sound changed between the EP and Q2k, it still sounded like the same band. This does not. It sounds like the same singer, but not the same band.
Here’s a good example: Motley Crue self-titled. Vince left, but it still sounded like heavy Motley Crue, because it was Nikki writing, Tommy on the drums, and Mick on guitar. It had the core sound enough that many fans today LOVE that album.

Yeah, Neue Regel… those were the days…
Speaking of Tate, I rate his solo album Kings & Thieves higher than Freq. Unknown, just because of the fact that it was a solo album and therefore it did not need any Queensrÿche references at all.

Money decides all, money. There’s no money in record sales atleast not in the numbers were talking with these two entities.
If Geoff Tate wants the Queensryche brand he pays for it. It comes down to numbers and how long and risks in returns. The judge presiding is not going to consider who was called a douche bag the most or record sales, world tours etc. Money decides this just as it does all big decisions concerning substantial amounts of money.
Same goes for Toddryche, they better have an investors

It’s a festival. Do you really believe that all these people bought a ticket to see Tate? They went there because Tate and the band played. They would have went to that stage no matter who was playing. I’ve seen completely unknown bands draw a really big crowd at festivals, with people enjoying themselves and clapping along to their music. How come? Well, it’s sunny day, cold beer and a big party. I wouldn’t read that much into it, no matter what band. And no, that’s hardly 50 000 people there.

Yes, Mike, Ratt did get such a reaction. They had a much bigger crowd than Tateryche and they also got a better response thatn Tate. And listen to Stephen Pearcy’s vocals here. Horrible. The crowd goes nuts over Ratt anyway. Maybe that’s because Pearcy is a legend. Or because he’s such an amazing singer. Maybe all the crowd needs is the “voice”. What do you think, regel boy? In my humble opinion it stands to reason all the bands involved in “Monsters” contributed to drawing the crowd but my point was, the crowd enjoyed the Queensryche performance even though the music sounded different from years past when Queensryche used “click tracks” for live performances. Speaking Whitesnake, saw them open for the Scorps 2002 ish down town Tampa hockey arena w/ice under temporary floor. Whitesnake extended “still of the night” riff for there encore very cool and it stayed in my head for a week. Scorpions loud and very powerful back then compared to there Tampa farewell show last yr with Ratt as there opener! We enjoyed Ratt catchy sing along songs!

Fair enough about all bands contributing to the crowd.
Personally I don’t get the big deal about click tracks. A lot of rock bands who use elaborate stage and light shows use them, to keep the music in sync with the computers that control the stage show. I never begrudged anybody in Queensryche for having click tracks, not when some of the greatest bands in progressive rock, such as Marillion, also use them.

Example:2008 American Soldier tour they opened w/Neue Regel all shows…..there’s a reason, not familiar w/song though, it could be because Brazil is gonna make big noise in yrs coming as the next super power because of oil discovered off tthere coast enough to produce 20% of worlds oil!!! Oh, im not say there’s anything wrong w/click tracks, Queensryche always had the badass live shows, but it stands to reason things will be much different without them especially when we’ve all come to expect the exact recording sound for Queensryche live performances after all these years and the bigger the stage the more there missed apparently? ……. after all there is a reason for click tracks eh?

Absolutely, I agree with that statement too. I’m sure some bands need click tracks to play in time — I wouldn’t be surprised if Kiss had to use them during the reunion era because Peter Criss is notorious for having bad timing — but there’s nothing inherently wrong with them.
I will say that for what I see lacking in Geoff’s band, he’s definitely singing better this year than in previous years. He seems like he’s putting everything he has into it.
Who knows, I wonder if we’ll end up in a long term situation where two bands have the same name. It worked for a while for LA Guns (except Tracii couldn’t hang onto a lead singer) and it seems to be working currently for Great White.

I have nothing against Tate what so ever, I would love the original band back together again as much as the next guy, as long as they still can make it sound good. But Tate doesn’t. I’m a huge Kiss fan, I believe that Paul Stanley has totally lost his voice. Is that a personal attack on Paul? I have seen Whitesnake perform a couple of times the last few years and I believe that Coverdale’s voice is shot. Do I hate Cov now? I don’t care if it’s my favourite band I’m talking about, if they can’t deliver anymore, then they can’t – simple as that.
You need to stop taking these things so damn personal.

Alright, let’s try to stay on topic…I don’t think anybody’s trying to “silence” anyone else. I think we’re all just trying to get our points across. Let’s just stick to that.
For all we know, Jon could be a real wizard and casting a spell on you right now, long distance! Be nice :)

Jon gets into telling 50,000 or so maybe more Brazilian rock fans “your delusional and you have wishful thinking” if you enjoy Queensryche. Lol

No that is not what he said at all. You are mis-quoting him. What Jon said was:
“If you can honesty claim that this actually sounds like Queensrÿche, the you’re either delusional or suffering from the worst case of wishful thinking ever”
He said nothing about enjoying Queensryche. He said you’re delusional if you think it sounds like Queensryche (he’s right). That is not the same as enjoyment. I enjoy vanilla ice cream. I’d be delusional to say that it tastes anything like chocolate. But they’re both ice cream and I like both.

My point, the Brazilian crowd would disagree it stands to reason with Jon and his “delusional and wishful thinking” comments. Look at the crowd on Empire….also we’ve all seen our share of youtube stuff that the sound is less than real world.

No, you don’t know if they were cheering because they thought it sounded like Queensryche, or just because they liked it. Those are two different things.

In jons opinion everybody sucks and in a round about way he says Brazilian fans are stupid because they applaud any music at festivals no matter how bad it sounds!!! We were having an educated conversion w/interesting info before jon hijacked the conversation with his negative no it all B*ll sh*t and I call him out on it! So im banned?!! Lmao! I dig! Lol loud!!!

So, I said that everybody sucks and I called the Brazilian fans stupid, did I? Exactly where did I write that? Please let me know. You’re putting words in my mouth. Mastermind!
So, Regel boy, have you ever attended a festival? If you had, you’d might know that in most cases, festival crowds attends festivals to have a good time, a party and listen to some great music. The fact that Tateryche doesn’t have the original QR sound anymore isn’t that important. It’s a good band which are playing great songs, the sun is shining and there are beer to drink. So, Pearcy’s voice is shot. So what? It’s a party and it’s a good time and that is usually what festivals are all about.
I never said they were delusional. I never said that the music don’t sound good. It does. But it doesn’t have the QR sound. It’s not that hard to hear.
Also, a good friend of mine lives in Brazil and he told me the rock fans down there more or less freaks out to no matter who’s playing as they don’t get the chance to watch hard rock and metal bands that often.

Which is it boy jon? Dreadful or sounds good? Because you’ve spoken both both opinions out your a**! Lol!

Has anyone heard Blotzer play with Tate’s band? I haven’t, but I have a feeling that Blotzer left the band was because he couldn’t pull it off, the QR songs, I mean. It’s one thing to play Ratt’s stuff but a whole other thing playing QR stuff, way more complicated. I saw Ratt at Sweden Rock some years ago and to say that Blotz was tight would be to lie big time. Both Simon Wright and Brian Tichy are in a whole different league than Blotzer, in my opinion.

I don’t believe they ever got past rehearsals with Blotzer. If that — he was only in the band for the very early stages. Who knows if they ever had started playing together yet, or Tate was just assembling the names.

Well, Mr Regel, I have seen coverbands play Empire and they also got the crowd cheering and clapping their hands. Why? Well, because Empire is an awesome song, that’s why. The Brazilian festival crowd probably liked the tune. But does Tate sing well? Nope. Does it sound like QR? Nope.

No, Brazialian crowd cheered when they heard the songs. They didn’t cheer because they were so amazed by Tate’s brilliant vocal performance. Brazilian crowd would have gone bananas over Todd’s Queensryche as well.

I don’t think that’s what he was saying. What he was saying, and I agree with him, are these things:
1. Brazilian crowds would have enjoyed Toddryche just as much. This is how they always react. It’s great to see but not unexpected or unusual.
2. Not everyone that is in a festival crowd is there to see any one band. We all know this. I would take that to be self evident. Some of those people are probably Whitesnake fans who hate Queensryche. That’s just the odds, sir.

No the Brazilian crowd didn’t go “bananas” for toddryche because they were not offered a playing slot at monster rock, Queensryche was!

How many cover bands can you name that still have three of the four founding members? The fourth being DeGarmo, since Tate was just a hired gun in the very beginning. No writing credits on the first EP at all. An EP that the other Queensryche are playing live…you know…the guys who wrote it.
So for Jon and myself, please define “cover band”.
LikeLike
3 or 4? Or just 3? Which is it? Its 3 not 4, Degarmo far from being in Toddryche.
Rising West! Lmao!!!
LikeLike
3 out of 4.
“Rising West” is from a lyric that Tate did NOT write. Tate didn’t even start writing with the band until Warning. An album that Wilton also co-wrote 6 songs on.
Who’s the cover band again? How many of these albums did Kelly Gray or Rudy Sarzo write?
LikeLike
I read it wrong, 3 of four….my bad.

Of the 144 songs Queensryche has released Geoff Tate has written the music and lyrics on 116 songs. Toddryche covering many of them.
LikeLike
Geoff Tate has CO-WRITTEN, you mean?
Still, that’s beside the point. Wilton, Jackson & Rockenfield were all aprt of the band as much as Tate and DeGarmo when those songs were written and recorded and therefore they have every right to play them. Tate has his backing band of hired hands who plays QR songs with the original singer. 1/6 original in Tateryche, 3/5 original in Queensrÿche. You do the maths. Oh, wait, Tate isn’t an original member. That makes it 0/6….
If I’m watching the gig and then write a review of how I experienced it, how could that be conjecture?

Boy jon doesn’t know the definition of conjecture obviously,! Personally. I think your full of sh** and I don’t believe much of anything you say, that includes the Toadryche show Wed night. Put a picture of the tickets up for us!
