Yesterday the world lost David Bowie, to cancer, at age 69. While I own absolutely no Bowie in my collection (aside from covers of his music and guest appearances on Queen albums) I have always admired the man’s creativity. He goes to places I don’t even understand, and maybe that’s why I never “got” David Bowie. While recognizing his genius I was unable to penetrate beyond the singles. Perhaps I should try again.
In the meantime, plenty of folks far and wide have posted tributes to the man, his music and even his movies. Rather than pretend I know what I’m talking about, I’ll let these fine writers do it instead. Rest in Peace, David Bowie.
And fuck you, cancer.
- Rich Kamerman’s comprehensive 9-part Bowie series, and a new post called DAVID BOWIE – We Live For Just These Twenty Years
- Jay at Assholes Watching Movies – Farewell to the Goblin King
- Derek Kortepeter at mixolydianblog – David Bowie “I listened to Space Oddity when I heard and started just sobbing.”
- Bruce at Vinyl Connection – BEREFT (no words, just great photos), and also 12 BOWIE REFLECTIONS (with words!)
- Stone at Metal Odyssey – David Bowie Rest in Peace 1947-2016
- Aaron at KeepsMeAlive – R.I.P. David Bowie “You’ll all write more eloquent and moving memorials, when all I can think is ‘well, fuck!’”
- Geoff at the 1001Albums – So sad, so beautiful
- Every Record Tells a Story – David Bowie: His Music and his Legacy
Last and not least,
- Joe at 1537 – David Bowie R.I.P. (“The planet is, without a doubt, a touch poorer than it was yesterday.”)
He always looked so young.

How in the hell do you not own any Bowie! That’s the biggest surprise I’ve heard in a long time. You can’t go wrong with ANY hits collection, but if you need an album I’d suggest Ziggy Stardust.

I’m gonna blame over-exposure at the Record Store. When every person that sucks likes the same music, it drives you away.

I knew you weren’t a big fan but I’m really surprised you don’t own anything of his, even a compilation. You have pretty diverse tastes so I can see you loving a lot of his catalog. Thanks for sharing the link to my Bowie series, which remains the most fulfilling experience I’ve had since starting my blog nearly 5 years ago. I will check out your other links tomorrow when I have some free time.

Well believe me RIch, since posting this, the offers to send me Bowie music have flooded in. So I think it won’t be long before I have the 3 CD Singles.

So I should hold off sending you Bowie tracks then? ;)

Yes please hold off. A flood ensues!

Not a bad way to start a free Bowie collection. Will these become a new LeBrain feature? Anytime you realize you’re missing an artist in your library, you write a post about them bemoaning the fact that you don’t own any of their albums. Haha.

Well Rich you know me, I’ll buy something. Shame I already did an Amazon order this week!

He’s got plenty of deluxe editions for you to spend your money on.

Of course he does!
But that’s a good thing. Saves me from looking for rarities, down the line.

Do persevere, Mike. Maybe even try the much-maligned Black Tie White Noise?
Thanks for the shout-out. I’ve just added a ‘word’ post to the ‘pic’ post. Well, I had to really.

There’s always time to delve back into the catalogue Mike, I must admit I have to do some of that myself. Always meant to, you know? I’ve heard some but not all. I don’t suppose his dying is a good reason to do it, when it could have been any other day but I know his stuff is out there and I will get to it all eventually! Let me know how it goes for you!
And thanks for the link-back. I’m sure folks were thrilled to go to the KMA and read “well, fuck!” Hahaha.

I think that’s something even non-fans can agree upon: he was an innovative artist worthy of universal admiration.
Thanks for assembling the tributes Mike

No problem Geoff I’m sure you’ve already checked many of them out! I feel like a tool, not owning any.

Hey I didn’t own any until a few years ago, never too late :)

It’s a door that should be opened. This may mean delaying starting a Saxon collection.
