I was walking home from a lecture at university in Leeds – freezing cold, miserable, with almost no money in my pocket at all when my friend told me. I scraped together enough for a pint later on and we went out and drank a toast to him, before going home because we couldn’t afford a second drink.

On my way to class. I remember it clearly because we’d just gotten the news that he was HIV+ the day before and then he was gone the next day. I loved the Innuendo album and was unable to listen to it again for at least a year afterwards.
