Teeth Week #1: “Punched In the Teeth By Love” by Mötley Crüe

Welcome to Teeth Week! Here we are – the week of my dental surgery. They’re putting me under on Wednesday the 28th, which is a first for me, and I don’t mind telling you I’m a little nervous! So let’s have some fun with it. This week we will be featuring songs involving teeth! The Def Leppard review series will continue next week. This week, let’s have a look at some teeth!

Motley Crue’s “Punched in the Teeth By Love” was written for 1991’s Decade of Decadence, but not properly recorded and released until 2000’s New Tattoo album. Or perhaps just the title was recycled on New Tattoo, since the final released version of “Punched in the Teeth By Love” is credited to Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil, Mick Mars and new Crue drummer Randy Castillo. Regarding, it’s one of the better songs on the album with a biting, if underwhelming, riff. The title of the song used to be somewhat of an anthem for me, as I had joked many times that I was going to steal it and write my own song based on my own experiences of being punched in the teeth by love.

  1. I wonder if “Skin of my Teeth” is going to make this week and, if so, which one (not a betting man, but would be fairly confident to bet it won’t be Demi’s version).

    1. You didn’t suggest it when I asked for suggestions so it doesn’t seem likely.

When this is all said and done I’m thinking of retiring. Tee Bone Man would continue but I’m not getting any joy out of this anymore.

      1. Fair point about the suggestions. I should have been more switched on.

And man, has it really got to the point that you’d rather stop it all instead of just scaling it back significantly and only doing it when you feel like it? I’m not privy to all the facts, so forgive me, but I feel like it’s been going too long to just end it all.

        1. I think you know all the facts, you just might not know exactly how I feel right now. I feel very tired. I am tired of sitting at the computer forcing myself to come up with words. The whole teeth thing has me verrrrrry distracted so now is not the time for me to make rash decisions. Where my head is at now, it feels like time to retire. Finish Def Lep, and continue writing fiction. I mentioned to John that I am glad this site has my name on it and not some name about music. It leaves me flexible to transition to other kinds of content, if that’s something I want to do.

        2. Good point about the name. It sucks to hear that you’ve lost the joy for the daily music writing. It’s hard to imagine a world without my lunchtime Lebrain, but I don’t want to muddle the decision making any further. Whatever the decision, I’ll focus on what’s there, not what isn’t. I’m glad Tee Bone Man is here to stay and I’m very excited for the future of that.

        3. Fiction is so much more fun for me right there. There’s a freedom to it. A freedom from facts, and truth. I can write anything I want. I mentioned to Holen that I’ve also written “sexy fiction”. I have a hilarious story about a new character named Edie being abducted by aliens along with Tommy Lee. It’s not necessarily something I will post here, but I think with some editing and changes, it would actually be quite fun for you guys to read. I’m working on my Edie stories with another collaborator and we’re discussing ways to depict her. However we both agree she shouldn’t be Lego – she needs to be curvy!

        4. I’m glad to hear my services won’t be required for such scandalous scripture :) And yes, I too enjoy fiction very much. Creating stories has been one of my greatest passions since I’ve been a child and I must thank you for giving me the opportunity to engage in that passion once again with Tee Bone Man. It’s been too long since I wrote fiction and I’ve been enjoying it so much.

Tommy Lee…hmmm…given his recent antics I’m not sure I want to know where this is going.

        5. It was interesting. Different to Tee Bone Man. And yes, Tommy Lee is a very…unique individual…shall we say, and I’m sure that he and his junk (and massive drum) could easily find a place in the TBM universe.

        6. I’m sort of indifferent. I don’t dislike it but I’m not blown away like I was with TBM. I got the feeling while reading that I wasn’t the intended audience.

        7. I wish I could sleep through the whole day :( But the actual Edie picked a number of good songs and there was one that needed to go up the day of surgery. You’ll see if you cannot guess!

        1. Good luck, buddy. I presume you’ve already got the posts scheduled all week so if you’re out of your mind on painkillers the posts will go out anyway?

        2. I’d say I pray for a speedy recovery, but I’m not a man of the cloth. I’m a man who touches cloth. So I’ll just hope for a speedy recovery.

  2. Hoping everything comes well with the operation!

U retiring? I hear you. I burned out as well years ago.

It’s been fun to read your site and keep up with all things music. It’s been years since I’ve actually talked face to face about music with anyone. It’s all on computer now. So with u gone there’s not even that.

    Take care of yourself!

    1. I think after 10 years I need a change. I don’t plan on “fully” retiring, because I enjoy making videos and writing fiction. But there is no joy in reviewing anymore. It’s become work and I don’t want that for my leisure time anymore.

  3. I feel like I’ve missed a lot. I knew about your kitchen but here you are going in for dental work, and John Snow had surgery too? I mean, I gotta go get a filling in October, and my new job is poking me with needles a lot this week to make sure I don’t have any diseases before I start working, but there’s more seriousness afoot!

    1. There’s a lot going on and I haven’t been able to really support your changes. I’m struggling to support myself and Jen right now. Last night was awful and I barely slept. I have surgery tomorrow and I’m so tired.
