RECORD STORE TALES Part 262:ย ย By Your Side

1999 was shaping up to be an exciting year.ย ย The Black Crowesโ€™ most recent disc, Three Snakes & One Charm, wasnโ€™t bad but it didnโ€™t excite me.ย ย Rolling Stone magazine made negative comments about Chris Robinsonโ€™s beard as if the beard wrote the songs.ย ย The rumour mill was going full speed, that the Crowes had returned to their โ€œearlierโ€ sound.ย ย The new album, By Your Side, would be more like Shake Your Money Maker, and less like a bunch of bearded hippies jamming after a toke.ย ย I know today the Crowes had recorded an album called Band (now available as CD 2 of The Lost Crowes), but it was rejected by American Recordings who wanted the band to make a basic rock nโ€™ roll album, so they shaved off their beards and thatโ€™s what they did.

OK, sure, whatever โ€“ I was on board.ย ย I donโ€™t mind some changes to shake things up.ย ย I donโ€™t necessarily always endorse a full-on โ€œreturnโ€ to a sound, because you canโ€™t really duplicate a specific era.ย ย But this was the Crowes, a band who injected integrity into everything theyโ€™d done so far.

The first single released, โ€œKickinโ€™ My Heart Aroundโ€ was a frickin’ steamroller of a rock song.ย ย It was released in November 1998, about two months before By Your Side was to come out.ย ย It created a real buzz.ย ย I was hearing excitement in the store from a lot of Crowes fans.ย ย Naturally, the new Crowes album would be a subject for Statham and I to discuss, and discuss it we did.ย ย Statham knew then that I collected Crowes B-sides, and โ€œKickinโ€™ My Heart Aroundโ€ had two that werenโ€™t going to be on the album.

I’m not too sure about Chris’ Prince Valiant haircut

In late December, Statham strolled into my store with a surprise.ย ย He had picked up for me my own copy of โ€œKickinโ€™ My Heart Aroundโ€ since I had been unable to locate one!ย ย Best of all, it was a Christmas gift โ€“ the first gift that I was given by a customer at the record store that I can recall.ย ย I was quite blown away.ย ย I didnโ€™t ask Statham to get the CD for me, and I certainly didnโ€™t expect a gift from a customer!ย ย But then again, as he has said in the past, he believes in treating his record store guys right.ย ย Thatโ€™s something Iโ€™ll never forget.

The two B-sides โ€œIt Must Be Overโ€ and โ€œYou Donโ€™t Have To Goโ€ were both quality tunes on top of it all.ย ย I was thrilled.ย ย I brought the CD home and showed it to my dad.

โ€œGet this, dad!โ€ I began.ย ย โ€œOne of my customers bought me this CD that I have been looking for!ย ย Itโ€™s an early Christmas present!ย ย Cool, huh?โ€

My dad, being the โ€œnegative Nancyโ€ that he can be sometimes said, โ€œI donโ€™t think itโ€™s a good idea for you to accept gifts from customers.ย What does he expect in return?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think he expects anything in return, dad.ย ย It was just a thoughtful gift.ย ย Heโ€™s a nice guy.โ€

โ€œWell just be careful,โ€ my dad cautioned.ย ย โ€œIn my experience nothingโ€™s free!โ€

Iโ€™m glad to say in this case, my dad was wrong.ย ย Statham had no secret agenda, beyond friendship, and weโ€™re still friends 15 years after that.ย If anything weโ€™ve taken gifting music to each other to an extreme that we both enjoy.ย ย The mutual benefits have been incalculable!ย ย Thank you Statham for this CD, which I still treasure today.
