It’s hard to summarize a show like this, because several Wikipedia articles will need to be corrected, updated, and expanded after this show.

Highlights:

  • The story of how Archie introduced Brian Vollmer to the Trailer Park Boys, which of course led to Brian’s cameo on the DVD.
  • Why Archie wasn’t in that scene.
  • When Archie connected Brian Vollmer with Sean Kelly, who offered to join Helix on guitar or bass.Β  He eventually joined on bass.
  • How Archie got the Helix gig by playing at Brian’s wedding, and how that came about.Β  (Thanks to alcohol.)
  • What happened at the “blazing” tryout for the band.
  • The circumstances of replacing Randy Cooke for one gig with the Four Horsemen.
  • The lineup changes in Helix and the necessity behind some of them.
  • Archie’s opinion on certain bands who are out there playing with no original members.
  • What he contributed in the studio to albums such as Rockin’ In My Outer Space and Rockin’ You For 30 Years.
  • How Rockin’ In My Outer Space began its life as a Brian Vollmer solo album.
  • Thoughts on Van Halen (Hagar), Y&T, The Warning, Quiet Riot, The Guess Who, and many more.
  • Heartfelt appreciation for Greg “Fritz” Hinz.
  • Why he started YouTubing with the excellentΒ Gamble RambleΒ channel.
  • What are rototoms and how do they work?
  • And even some education on primates.

This is a 2.5 hour education in rock and roll history.Β  Check it out, and give Archie a subscription on YouTube.Β  He WILL be back!

REVIEW: Helix – Rockin’ in My Outer Space (2004)

ontario-bands-weekWelcome back to Ontario Bands Week!

KITCHENER.

scan_20161215HELIXΒ – Rockin’ in My Outer Space (2004 Dirty Dog)

This album was a long time coming. The last “true” Helix studio album (eg: not live, greatest hits or previously unreleased songs) was the excellent It’s A Business Doing Pleasure, twelveΒ years previous to this one. A lot happened in those twelve years, including member changes, management and record company splits, and even a Brian Vollmer solo album (When Pigs Fly). That Helix came out with an album this goodΒ with no warning was a pleasant surprise.

Almost every song here is quality stuff, with only the instrumental opener “Space Junk” and the jokey closer “Sunny Summer Daze” not fitting in with the serious rocking going on here. A couple of these recordingsΒ had previously appeared on Vollmer’s solo CDΒ (with Brian Doerner on drums), but thisΒ sounds more like a proper Helix album. The title track features a killer chorus (reminded me of “Rock You” a bit) with those recognizable Helix backing vocals. It’s also the most “party” of all the new songs, some of them being a little darker. Β Glen “Archie” Gamble (drums) utilizes some interesting cymbal work, a little different from what you usually hear on a Helix record. Β His playing gives this version of Helix a different rhythm.

“Six Feet Underground” has some nice acoustic work, and is extremely catchy. “Panic” has some irresistible vocals. “It’s Hard To Feel the SunshineΒ When Your Heart is Filled With Rain” might have an overly long title, but the song is amazing, as heard live in concert. Β A wicked harmonica solo fills the spot with a guitar solo might normally fit. Β “The Ballad Of Sam & Mary” is a jokey lyricΒ as Helix have done before, but with some serious kickΒ behind it. (Listen for a cameo by Brian’s wife Lynda Vollmer.) Β It’s only when you get to the closer with its Hawiian guitar that you feel like the album just hit a speedbump. The final track’s saving grace is a guest appearance by former member “Doctor” Doerner on guitar.

This album represented a muscular returnΒ for Helix, one that kicked off a stream of new Helix records. Β The band seemed revitalized even as lineups changed, as they continued to follow through with more quality rock and roll. Β Rockin’ in My Outer Space is a pleasure for fans because it’s different. This is not party music. There are audible dark clouds and angry riffs. Β The changes in heavy metal over the previous decade are obvious here. Β The guitars are chunkier and dirtier, and no song has a party-hardy chorus like the days of old, though the title track comes close. Β Helix are known for a certain brand of rock, and it’s nice when they choose to stretch out.

Fear not Helix fans. Brian Vollmer and his gang of little-known but excellent players did not disappoint when they finally decided to release a new album under the Helix Band banner. Aside from the first and last tracks, this is one you’ll be playing all the way through.

And heck, you get used to the the first and last tracks after a while.

Bonus: Β In 2005, Helix returned to Sweden to play Sweden Rock. Β iTunes have one song from their set available for download: “Rock You” Β This track features the short-lived but very cool six-piece lineup of Brian Vollmer, Archie Gamble, Jeff Fountain (bass), Jim Lawson (guitar), Rainer Wiechmann (guitar and producer) and Cindy Wiechmann (vocals and other instruments). This is the version of Helix that supported this album, and fortunately it was captured live. Check it out for an idea of what this great lineup sounded like live.

REVIEW: Helix – half-ALIVE (1998)

“Ain’t no rest for the Helix band!” – Brian Vollmer

HELIX – half-ALIVE (1998 DeRock)

The 90’s weren’t a kind decadeΒ to Helix. Longtime guitarist Paul Hackman was killed in a 1992 auto accident. Without any Helix tracks written for a new album, Brian Vollmer chose to reconceive his in-the-works solo album as a Helix one,Β It’s a Business Doing Pleasure. The largely acoustic leanings of that (excellent) album didn’t fit with the overall Helix sound, and the album was tragically ignored. It would be five years before half-ALIVEΒ finally followed it.

With their original heavy rock sound intact, Helix came roaring back with this mostly live, partly studio recording. With some live gigs recorded, as well as a handful of unreleased and unfinished new songs, half-ALIVE maybe should have been called one-third-ALIVE. Either way, it rocks. If you’ve seen this band live, then you know how much they kick it on stage.

HELIX HA_0003

After the death of Paul Hackman, it seemed like Helix became more a “project” than a band, with rotating members around the nucleus of Brian Vollmer (vocals) and Daryl Gray (bass). On half-ALIVE, you will hear appearances from members such as Greg “Fritz” Hinz (drums), Paul Hackman and Dr. Doerner (guitars), and even a song written by Mike Uzelac, their bass player when they signed to Capitol RecordsΒ Β (who was actually a missing person for a longΒ time). In addition, newer members like drummer Glen “Archie” Gamble and guitarists Denny Balicki, Gary Borden, Rick Mead and Mark Chichkan all contribute. These guys helped keep Helix going as a touring entity in the 90’s. Β Gamble in particular, since he was in the band for almost a whole decade.

Could the Helix of the 90’s cut it as much as the classic 80’s band? The five studio tracks roar “yes”! A far cry from the acoustic rock of It’s a Business Doing Pleasure, this is a return to the hard rock/metal sounds of Walkin’ the Razor’s Edge. Best tracks among the studio crop are “Wrecking Ball”, Steppenwolf’s “The Pusher” and a ballad called “The Same Room” (the single). Β “Big Bang Boom” is the only one I do not care for. Β The rest are decent songs, not necessarily career highlights, but solid. Β Of course, Vollmer’s voice is in fine form. Β It always is. Β No matter what Helix do on an album, you can count on Brian’s vocals sounding as theyΒ always has. Β That’s his Bel Canto training.

Video shoot for the unreleased “The Same Room” clip

From there we go to the live material. Virtually all the hits are present (“Rock You”, “Running Wild In The 21st Century”, “Good To The Last Drop”, “Heavy Metal Love”, “Wild In The Streets”, etc.) There’s also a new acoustic composition called “Smile”, written and performed by Gary Borden. What really sets this live stuff apart from their studio albums is Vollmer’s friendly on-stage banter. As he relates a tale of staying in a hotel in Seaforth Ontario (population at the time: less than 2000), you’ll laugh along, especially if you’ve been there! Β Equally good is Brian’s mid-song speech in “No Rest for the Wicked”. (Hits that are missing include “The Kids are all Shakin'”.)

The live songs wereΒ taken from various tours, 1992-1997, so there are a variety of material and band members (as noted above). Yet there’s a cohesiveness that similar live albums lack. The songs are mixed together and flow seamlessly, and you really can’t hear the five years passing. The sound is hard, clear, and rocking, and begs the question: “What took them five years to release this stuff?” I guess it was circumstance. Β It had nothing to do with quality, that’s for sure. Β The performances are raw though, and it doesn’t sound like much in terms of overdubs was done to the recordings.

My only real complaint about this otherwiseΒ competent liveΒ album is the cheesy cover art. Up close, it kind of looks cheap and crappy. And Brian’s haircut…I’m sorry man! I’ve met Brian and he was so cool and kind, so I hate to say bad things, but yeah…I’m glad you grew your hair back man!
