QUEENSRYCHE: Tate No More!!

I called it weeks ago and now the splitย is official:

Geoff Tate is OUT of Queensryche.

He has been replaced by Crimson Glory/Rising West singer Todd La Torre.ย

After the now-infamous “knife incident” news,ย this really comes as no surprise.ย  The only consolation to fans is that Rising West (which is now actually Queensryche considering the membership is now identical) played exclusively material from the first 5 QR records.ย  Hopefully this means a return to the metal, and an end to stuff like Tribe….

Stay tuned!

DOUBLE UPDATE WITH GRAVY:

Todd LaTorre reports that he is in both Queensryche AND Crimson Glory, as both prepare material for new albums!ย  He also states:ย  “Queensryche enters a new chapter; buckle up.”

Part 64: Niagara Falls

RECORD STORE TALESย Part 64: ย Niagara Falls

I never was the traveling kind, so when I had to spend a weekend working Niagara Falls, I wasn’t too thrilled at the prospect.ย  I warmed up to the idea after I met Mike and Greg, the new owners of our latest franchise.

I packed the Deep Purple box set in the car, a box of pepperettes, and hit the highway.ย  I arrived at the store on a bitter cold Saturday morning, and we worked the day away.ย  It was a tiring day, as we bought and shelved a lot of merchandise that day.ย  We were constantly pricing discs.

The best thing about Niagara was the co-owner Mike.ย  He was a funny guy.ย  Great stories.ย  Massive Kiss fan.ย  Great stories about meeting Gene and being promised all sorts of things on the forthcoming Kiss box set.ย  Mike also played bass.ย  He was a long, long time Record Store Guy.

Mike was in this insane punk band called The Legendary Klopeks.ย ย He wore a blonde pigtail wig and went by the name of Lemon Kurri Klopek.ย  The lead singer, Josh, was Sweet Pepper Klopek.ย  He is quite legendary today as an extreme…well I dunno what you call it but he bleeds a lot and he wrestles and heย is a Guiness’ Book record holderย for something that nobody should really do.

Their lyrics were hilarious.ย  Take, for example, “Ric Flair”:

I wanna (something something?)

I wanna do a “woo” (“WOOO!”)

I wanna be like Ric

’cause he’s so fucking cool

I want a son

whoย doesn’t suck

That’s the only thing that’s wrong with Ric

So who gives a fuck?

He’s the king, the king of the ring,

He’ll fuck you up just like it ain’t no thing.

Every song on the sophomore album Straight To Hell ends with the words, “Fuck you!”ย  Even the short ones, like “Where’s My Soup?”ย  The lyrics to “Where’s My Soup?” are as follows:

Where’s my soup?

Fuck you!

The other owner, Greg, did merch for Blue Rodeo and in fact when he said this, I realized I’d seen him at the last Blue Rodeo gig that I attended.ย  I bought a shirt from him!

Because of the Legendary Klopeks, Niagara had a bit of, I don’t know how to put this…an entourage, maybe?ย  All interesting characters.ย  The most interesting was Gary James Dean. Otherwise known as The Deaner.

The less said about the Deaner, the better.ย  But I will say this.ย ย  He liked to tell people that he masturbated with his Justin Timberlake doll.ย  And he phoned about 25 times a day.ย  Not even exaggerating about that.

Anyway, Niagara was a fun store to work in.ย  They always played good music, and they had great stories.ย  Today Mike tours with Steve Earle, doing his merch, and I am insanely happy for him and jealous at the same time.ย  He’ll post a picture on Facebook like, “Me and Steve eating sushi.”ย  Stuff like that.

The best score that I got from that store was actually a gift from Mike.ย  It was the Bruce Dickinson CD single for “All The Young Dudes”, the Mott the Hoople cover.ย  (B-sides:ย  the acoustic “Darkness Be My Friend”, and the AC/DC cover “Sin City”.)

I’ll always remember good times in the Falls:ย  Rock n’ Roll, the Klopeks, sushi, and the Deaner!

Part 69: Porn Don’t Go Platinum

RECORD STORE TALES PART 69: ย Porn Don’t Go Platinum

Yeah, it happened.ย  Every once in a while, someone would try to sell porn to us.ย  Us, a mainstream, family-oriented used CD store.

On one occasion which, sadly, I was not there to witness, I was told that the video in question was anime “robot porn”.ย  I don’t know what that really means, in terms of, what you will see on the video screen.ย  However that description alone was enough to politely turn down the video in question.

Another time, some porn came into Trevor’s store.ย  Trevor declined it, but the customer left it behind anyway.ย  At the time, Trev and I were roomates.ย  We were renting this shitty basement apartment.ย  Good times for sure, but the hallways of the building always smelled like fish.

I went to the cottage one weekend, and Trev surprised me upon my return.ย  Upon my bed was that porn tape.ย  He wasn’t home, so I decided, “What the hell?”ย  I removed the tape from its cardboard shell, placed in the VCR, and washed my hands.ย  I thought, “I wonder what kind of porn our clientele are into?”ย  The store was in Cambridge so I expected the quality to be less than stellar.

Well, what I saw horrified me.ย  This chick with missing teeth,ย going at it with four dudes, with the cheesiest piano music in the background, like John Tesh cheesey.ย  I couldn’t handle the missing teeth though, they were so friggin’ gross…

So:ย  Apparently, according to a survey of one, people in Cambridge watch toothless cheesey porn with John Tesh sounding music in the background.ย  Way to go Cambridge!

REVIEW: Black Sabbath – Seventh Star (deluxe edition)

SAM_2138

BLACK SABBATH featuring TONY IOMMI – Seventh Star (2011 deluxe edition)

The only Black Sabbath album with Glenn Hughes on vocals. The only one released under the somewhat silly name “Black Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi”. The first one to feature no original members except Tony himself, with Geezer and Bill departing after the disasterous hiring of a new singer named Dave “Donut” Donato, a male model. That bore no fruit, and Iommi instead toiled away on what he intended to be his first solo album….

Finally, Seventh Star has been given the Deluxe Edition treatment. I’ve been waiting for some kind of official release of the music videoย remix of “No Stranger To Love” for 25 years. Finally it is available on this Deluxe Edition, along with a pretty good live show featuring the late Ray Gillen on vocals. I already have a Ray show on bootleg (a very common one called The Ray Gillen Years) but this is a completely different show, with a different setlist.

SAM_2184

Seventh Star as an album probably never should have been released under the Black Sabbath name. It’s truly a solo album that Warner Bros didn’t want to release as a Tony Iommi album. So here it is, an official Sabbath album. If that didn’t occur, would Sabbath as an entity even have continued in the 1980’s? I doubt it. Sabbath here consisted of:

Tony Iommi – guitars
Glenn Hughes – lead vocals
Dave “The Beast” Spitz – bassย  (*brother of Dan)
Eric Singer – drums
Geoff Nicholls – keyboards

Only Iommi and Nicholls remain from previous Sabbath lineups. You know Glenn Hughes of course from his soulful wail in Deep Purple, and Eric Singer from his later work in Kiss. Here, the five musicians coalesce into a more commercial version of Black Sabbath. The hard hitting riffs are still there, the frenetic solos, the mystical lyrics, the pounding drums. Yet these songs are more melodic. Glenn infuses them with a soulfulย touch never heard before on a Sabbath album. Whether that is to your taste, only you can decide. Personally I love almost every song on this album. I find the standouts to be “In For The Kill”, “Seventh Star”, “Angry Heart”, and “No Stranger To Love”. Only “Heart Like A Wheel” bores me, a slow blues that doesn’t really go anywhere.

As mentioned, the video version of “No Stranger” is included, which I have never found anywhere else. For years I had it on VHS and I thought there were female backing vocals. This remaster reveals that it’s actually Glenn — I could never hear them clearly enough before to discern this.

The remastering on this CD is quite excellent. The drums have a fullness that wasn’t there before. The guitar absolutely sizzles. The liner notes are nothing new, just recycled from a previous edition of the CD, as are the included photos.

The bonus live show with Ray Gillen on vocals exists due toย Glenn’s vocal and drugย problems.ย  Ray Gillen was hiredย when it was clear that Hughesย was in noย shape toย tour.ย ย This CDย reveals that Ray was really trying to be Ronnie James Dio. Personally I find Ray’s renditions of the Sabbath classics to be very overwrought, especially on “Black Sabbath”. Only two songs from Seventh Star are played. (You can get Ray’s version of “Heart Like A Wheel” on the Ray Gillen Years bootleg, as well as “Sweet Leaf”.)

While Ray’s tenure in Black Sabbath was brief, it was still important historically.ย  Ray did one tour and recorded an album. ย There areย some singers in Sabbath’s history that are not documented at all. ย (One TV broadcast exists with Dave Walker singing “Junior’s Eyes”,ย and there’s a demo of Dave Donato singing an early version of “The Shining” called “No Way Out”.) ย  This live show, while not stellar, is an important piece of the Sabbath puzzle. It is the first (but not final!)ย official release of any Ray Gillen material with Sabbath.ย  The sound quality is slightly better than bootleg which is fine by me.

This remaster is not for Sabbath snobs. You know the kind. “Sabbath suck without Ozzy!” or “Dio is the best!” Sabbath’s history is far longer and richer than that, and there’s room for all kinds. Just one question:ย ย  Is Headless Cross going to get the deluxe treatment too?…may as well wish for the moon!

4/5ย stars

Yup…that’s Star Trek TNG’s Denise Crosby in the “No Stranger To Love” video!

NOTE: If you like this album, Hughes and Iommi hooked up twice more: On the Iommi solo albums The DEP Sessions, and Fused.

Part 63: Open Late

One of the best thing about working Sundays that first year was that it was a short day.ย  We were only open noon ’til 4.ย  It was usually a quiet day and you coul get a lot done.ย

Saturdays, on the other hand, usually sucked.ย  That was a long lonely day (8 hours, by yourself) and you usually ended the day with more work to do than you started with.ย  Yet the consolation was when 6 o’clock rolled around, we were closed and I was going home….

Not Easter Saturday 1995!ย  My Aunt from Calgary had just flown in and had surprised me by meeting me at work to drive me home.ย  She popped in at around 5:30 and gave me a big hug.

“What time do you get off?ย  I’ll drive you home.”ย  I normally walked to work so that was fine by me.ย  I told her that I’d be done cashing out at quarter after she bought some music (Forrest Gump if I recall).

My Aunt stepped out to wait for me in the mall.ย  However, even though it was almost 6, people kept pouring in, it looked like one giant family.ย

“Can I help you guys find anything today?” I asked.

“No, we’re fine, thanks,” replied the patriarch of this particular clan.

6 o’clock.ย  I pulled our sign in fromย  the hallway, and slid the door partway shut.ย  I went to the cash register and waited.ย  A last-minute straggler bought a cassette, and I opened the door to let him out, and closed it again.ย  Incredibly,ย after I closed the door, some more people from this one family arrived,ย opened it, and poured in!ย

I just kind of stared like I didn’t see it happen.ย  Like, why do we bother closing?ย  Hey folks, let’s stay open 24 FREAKIN’ HOURS A DAY!

My Aunt was waiting outside clearly confused.

Half an hour later, she knocked on the store window.ย  I opened the door.

“How long do you think you’ll be?”

“I have no idea…these people are pissing me off!”

I reminded them that we were closed, and asked if I could help them find anything.

“No.ย  Just lookin’,” the patriarch replied.

Jesus Murphy!ย  The clocked ticked on, and finally they were done.ย  A few of the kids bought some cassettes, and the transactions took forever because kids always seem to pay in change….

I was out around 7.ย  Luckily having my Aunt in town salvaged what was a pretty rotten Saturday!

REVIEW: Metallica – The First 30 Years 7″ single / Metal Hammer 30th Anniversay Event

Metallica – The First 30 Years 7″ single / Metal Hammer 30th Anniversay Event ($19.99)

In December 2011, Metallica played four special 30th Anniversary shows at the Fillmore.ย  Each show featured guests too numerous to list, a completely unique set list, and one new song at each show.ย  (Those four songs later became Beyond Magnetic — my review here!)

Two songs from the December 10th show are available on this neat 7″ single, available with a special copy of Metal Hammer magazine.

Side a:ย  “So What” (Live – featuring Animal from the Anti-Nowhere League)

Side b: “Through the Never” (Live)

What do I need to tell you?ย  It’s Metallica live, you know the songs, you know what Metallica do.ย  I think it’s great!ย  I love “So What” with Animal handling the lead vocals.ย ย  That song also features a bit of an intro for Animal by James.ย  “Through the Never” is your standard live version, just as fast as when the Black Album came out over 20 years ago.

If anything, this disc just whets the appetite.ย  Fortunately Metallica have made all four shows available to purchase (download only, no physical release) from their site.ย

The magazine is cool, loads of pictures and interviews about the show with just about anybody you want to to hear from.ย  It’s glossy, 132 pages, the perfect souvenir of an important series of concerts for this band.ย  If you’re a fan, this is a no-brainer, even if you don’t own a turntable.ย  If you do own a turntable, then I think $19.99 (Canadian, when I got it at Sunrise Records) is a more than fair price for this cool item.

Part 62: Creepy Danny (Spice up your life!)

Nobody shall ever forget Creepy Danny. So named, because some of the girls at the store were really creeped out by him. Me, I think he was harmless albeit annoying as hell. Sometimes, I wonder how people like Creepy Danny managed to function (feed, clothe themselves) on a daily basis.

Creepy Danny was this short little guy who somewhat resembled a human troll. Heย seemed…not right in the head. He had a high, whispery voice with a lisp and stutter, and tended to repeat the same question over and over again in the same breath. And he liked Spice Girls, a lot.

โ€œD-d-d-do you have Spice Girls? Do you have Spice Girls?โ€

Once youโ€™d show him Spice Girls, the next inevitable questions were (not necessarily in this order):

โ€œD-d-d-do you like Spice Girls? I like Geri. Do you like Spice Girls? Do you like Geri? I like Geri best. Then Scary, Baby, Posh and Sporty. Do you like Spice Girls?ย  Have you seen the v-v-v-video for ‘Spice Up Your Life’?ย  P-p-people of the world! Spice up your life!โ€

There was no stopping Creepy Danny when he was on about Spice Girl.

โ€œI heard th-th-th-that Geri quit Spice Girls. Is that true, is that true?โ€

He was indeed crushed when I told him that Ginger was no longer a Spice Girl.

However, it wasnโ€™t many months before he started asking the next, inevitable question:

โ€œD-d-d-do you have the newย CD by G-G-G-Geri Halliwell? D-d-do you have Geri Halliwell?โ€

I think I sold about 3 copies of that album in total by the way.

But he was harmless. He just took a lot of babysitting, and time out of your day, and two Advil.

The phone would ring. Iโ€™d hear that high stuttering voice. โ€œD-d-d-do you have Backstreet Boys?โ€ Sometimes, I would hand the phone over to someone else. โ€œBrad, itโ€™s for you.โ€ And then hand him off to Creepy Danny.

I have a theory about Creepy Danny.

He was simply too bizarre to have been a real persona. In all my years at the store, I have never met anyone as purely strange yet functional as Creepy Danny. I believe that Creepy Danny was actually a University Sociology masters student, and it was a persona he adopted in public as some sort of elaborate social experiment, to see how people treat those who are different.

I imagined a scenario where I might catch Creepy Danny out of character. I imagined that one night, I would be out for a nice expensive dinner at Charcoal Steakhouse. I would be there with a girl, and at the next candlelit table, there is Danny, with a knock-out babe. He pours the wine. He catches a glimpse of me. A glimmer of recognition. Suddenly, he reverts back to character! โ€œD-d-d-do you like Spice Girls?โ€

Thatโ€™s the way I imagined it unfolding. My theory was never proven, nor disproven. But in my mind, a character as weird as Danny was simply had to be cooked up by a student. Thereโ€™s no other way!

Part 61: Obsessive Compulsive / REVIEW – Oasis Live (1994)

I’ve always had a little obsessive-compulsive in me.ย  This really came out when I started collecting music.ย  First, I had to have all the albums.ย  Then when I discovered B-sides, I had to have all of them, too.ย  Easier said than done.

Nowadays, the picture is so much more complicated.ย  While single B-sides are much more scarce today, much pricier bonus tracks have now replaced them.ย  Today, one has the choice to collect Japanese imports, for one or two elusive songs, at premium prices.ย  Or, you could choose the iTunes version for its own exclusive songs.ย  Vinyl bonus tracks are becoming more common.ย  Then, on top of that, Best Buy often have their own exclusive songs.ย  Classic Rock Magazine gets bonus tracks sometimes.ย  Occasionally, different countries will have their own additional music.

This leavesย the obsessive-compulsive collectorย in a precarious position.ย  I’ll give you this example.ย  Alice Cooper, Welcome 2 My Nightmare.ย  In order to get every song associated with this album, I purchased:

The regular retail “deluxe edition” with four bonus tracks.

The iTunes edition which had its own bonus tracks…but not the ones from the physical versions.

The vinyl version, which had its own bonus track, “Flatline”, but none of the other bonus tracks.

The single for “I’ll Bite Your Face Off”, which has a live B-side from Download festival.

Being obsessive-compulsive about music sucks!ย  While you can usually get things at a fair price if you are patient and wait, sometimes you will never find what you want that way.ย  You could hunt every used CD store you ever enter, but will never find some of those Maiden singles, like “Wasting Love”, for under $40.ย  At least it’s never happened to me.

When you do get lucky, you have to act, and immediately.ย  One of my biggest scores happened to be a very, very rare item by one of Trevor’s favourite bands.ย  This was a sticking point.ย  More on that later….

The guy who sold it to me was one of those customers that nobody liked, except me.ย  As such,ย I always caught a lot of grief when these customers came in, because if I was seen chatting it up with them, it was considered “socializing” and not “work” because he was my “friend”.ย  This was one of those guys.

Well, define “friend”.ย  Did I go out for drinks with this guy?ย  No.ย  Did I ever see him outside work?ย  No.ย  Did I know his birthday?ย  No.ย  Did he buy stuff?ย  Yes, which in my mind makes him a customer.ย  Chatting up customers is called “customer service” as long as it’s welcomed by the customer.ย  Anyway.ย  Off topic.

One bonus about having customers who are “friends” is that when they trade,ย they always bring their good shit straight to your store first.ย  This guy in particular had just moved in from out west and didn’t like the attitude of the downtown stores.ย  He, like me, was an obsessive compulsive music collector, so I understood his needs.ย  Like me, he wanted the stuff to complete the collection, in good condition, and we had similar definitions of “good condition”.

Condition, needless to say, is important to the obsessive compulsive collector.ย  And what he brought me one day in 1998 was in beautiful, mint condition.

It was a UK promo disc ofย Definitely Maybe by Oasis.ย  The bonus here was a complete live album called Oasis Live, recorded 1994-12-10 at the Cabaret Metro.

I scooped up the disc.ย  I told Trevor immediately, knowing he would not be happy that I, the lesser Oasis fan, would keep it.ย  Trevor’s point was valid.ย  “I’m the bigger Oasis fan!” he said.ย  “If I got in a Kiss CD, no matter how rare, I would always give you first crack at it.”

He was right.ย  He would.ย  That’s why I still feel guilty about it today.ย  I did tape it for him, and later on burned it for him, but even that is not the same as owning.

I never saw it again, and I don’t know anybody who’s seen it before besides me and the guy who sold it to me.ย  According to the CD notes it is a Sony UK disc, ESK 6805.ย ย As I mentioned, it wasย bundled with Definitely Maybe, a UK pressing, EK 66431.

As it turns out, the Oasis live album was incredible and justifiable to keep!ย  It was from the tour for the first album, and they played loads of those songs and some B-sides.ย  It has some of those classic Liam and Noel moments.

Liam – “This one’s called Up In The Sky!”

Noel – “No it’s not, it’s called Bring It On Down!”

And, of course, Liam singsย his “I’d like to buy the world a Coke…”ย line during “Shakermaker”.

It’s an excellent recording.ย  Sounds like a small venue, which I find always seem to produce the best sounding live albums.ย  The band are playing with the youth and energy with which they began.ย  Liam sneers his way through the songs and there’s a minimum of talking.ย  No ballads.ย  Rest assured, when you see “Fade Away” on the tracklisting, it’s the electric version, not the acoustic!

I love this disc.ย  I didn’t even buy Familiar to Millions, because this one satisfies.

5/5 stars.

REVIEW: Def Leppard – Pour Some Sugar On Me / Rock of Ages 2012 (iTunes)

DEF LEPPARD – Pour Some Sugar On Me / Rock of Ages 2012 (iTunes exclusive single)

As the title suggests, Def Leppard have re-recorded two of their biggest hits, “Pour Some Sugar” and “Rock of Ages”.ย  This obvious move was made to capitalize on that new Rock of Ages movie that I have no desire to see.ย  Also, the songs coincide with a summer tour.

Apparently, you can’t get Def Lep’s studioย versions on iTunes for contractual reasons with the label, and the band didn’t want to miss the window of opportunity afforded by the movie.ย  So they re-recorded bothย songs and put them up on iTunes.

These will never replace the original songs in any universe, but they’re actually not bad.ย  Bothย tracksย are very, very close to the originals.ย  Knowing Def Leppard I am certain that this was intentional and done with surgical precision.ย  Aside from some additional guitar parts and sounds added to “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, the recordings are nearly identical.ย  This surprised me particularly on “Rock of Ages” since you don’t hear Joe do the high voice that often anymore.

For $1.29 a piece, I’m not going to complain too much.ย  I doubt I’ll listen to this very often, but the obsessive compulsive collector in me is glad to have these recordings.ย  I’d advise serious music fans to just buy the original two albums, Hysteria and Pyromania.ย  Both albums are loaded to the gills with hits so you can’t go wrong, plus I believe songs are best enjoyed in the context of the albums.

Having said all this, I hope some kind of limited edition physical release is forthcoming.ย  The collector in me would like that.

3/5 stars.

UPDATE:ย  According to Joe Elliot, there are more of these “forgeries” coming.

REVIEW: Rush – Clockwork Angels

RUSH – Clockwork Angels (2012)

When the first single from Clockwork Angels was released in 2010 (!!!) I wasn’t too into the new songs.ย  “BU2B”/”Caravan” were heavy and stomping but to me, not memorable.

Then the band went on tour and finished the album and that’s why you’re reading this today.

Alex, Tom, Meat, Geddy

Alex, Tom, Meat, Geddy

Like all Rush albums, Clockwork Angels is a grower.ย  I feel a bit like a jackass for even trying to review it after only listening to it thrice.ย  However, they were good listens:ย  Twice at home and once in the car.ย  Surprisingly, because Rush aren’t always this way, Clockwork Angels sounded best in the car.

To me, this album combines the “classic” 1970’s progressive sound of Rush with the classic-nouveau of 1993’s Counterparts.ย  At times it sounds like the band are ripping themselves off, but who cares?ย  This is the Rush album that many fans have been wishing for, before they went to bed each night.

Now, this is a concept album, but I don’t pretend to have penetrated the lyrics yet.ย  They are striking, and yet on the surface straightforward, the story easy enough to follow.ย  I am sure I will get more out of it I go deeper.ย  For example I found a reference in theย text portion of the story to Neil’s late drum instructor, so who knows what is in there?

All I can tell you for certainty is that there is a fantastic world of steam powered airships that take our protagonist on a odyssey across a strange and familiar land.ย  There is some sort of Watchmaker that seems to run the show with clockwork precision.ย  I know I have heard the word “watchmaker” as a metaphor for God in the past so I wonder if Neil had that analogy in mind.

There are a lot of bright spots to this album and not a lot of lows:ย  I count “The Anarchist” as having some of the best Rush riffage of all time, for catchiness and simultaneous complexity.ย  I think “The Wreckers” would make a most excellent third single.ย  “Headlong Flight” is one of the best songs, and probably the most traditionally Rush sounding, with tempos careening to and fro.ย  “Halo Effect” has a shimmery guitar part that reminds me of Snakes and Arrows.

Even “Caravan” and “BU2B” sound fresh to me.ย  I am certain they are freshly mixed, so hang on to your old single, collectors!

Most importantly, you can hear the sheer joy in the playing.ย  Geddy, Alex and Neil sound like they are playing for nothing more and nothing lessย than their ownย enjoyment.ย  It’s a truly inspiring sound and I think the album will continue to grow on me, as it stays in my car deck all week….

I even rank Hugh Syme’s artwork as among his best.ย  Each page leaps with messages hidden and obvious, a symbology with multiple meanings.ย  Although truthfully, I can’t stand the front cover.ย  I don’t think it captures the many colours and textures within.

As with everything released these days, there are multiple versions:

  1. Stardard digipack CD
  2. Classic Rock Fan Pack (no bonus tracks though, just the magazine)
  3. And, of course…2 LP, 180 gram vinyl. ย Sweet.
