I don’t think I’m going too far out on a limb if I call this the best song on Slave to the Grind. Β The closing song on a damn fine metal album, “Wasted Time” is awesome. Β It’s in “power ballad” territory, but it’s much darker than Skid Row’s prior hit ballad, “I Remember You”. Β Sebastian Bach turns in the best vocal performance of his life on this one. Β Sebastian co-wrote the song, about the damages of addiction.

Both the 7″ and the 12″ singles come with the previously unreleased live bonus track, “Get the Fuck Out”. Β (The other bonus tracks on the 12″ are “Holidays in the Sun” and “Psycho Love” which are both available elsewhere.) Β “Get the Fuck Out”, recorded at fuckin’ Wembley fer Christ’s sakes, features a long Sebastian intro that is probably more interesting than the song itself! Β Apparently, Skid Row were given a letter that stated specifically that Skid Row were not to play “Get the Fuck Out”. Β So what do they do?

Sebastian: Β “It says here, they’re gonna stop the show, because they don’t like the word ‘fuck’! Β And you’re not allowed to hear it!” Β Baz then leads the crowd in a chant of “get the fuck out!” before Skid Row drive into the song. Β As fans know, it’s a short firecracker punk rock song, and Baz is in top voice.

SKID ROWΒ – United World Rebellion Chapter One (2013)

I know Johnny Solinger’s been in the band longer than Sebastian was. I know the band probably hate Sebastian’s name even being brought up in a review such as this. I’ve been standing by the band through their last two albums (2003’s Thickskin and 2006’s Revolutions Per Minute). Β My interest waned quite a bit, on the long wait between releases by the band. Β This new EP (5 new songs) is failing to rouse me from myΒ ambivalence. Β So I’ll just come out and say it: Β Guys, get Sebastian back. It’s time. Β If Eddie Van Halen can get up on stage again with David Lee Roth and grin that grin of his, then Rachel Bolan can get over Sebastian Bach.

The thing is, there’s nothing wrong with United World Rebellion. Β (Last album was a “revolution”, now they’re having a “rebellion”. Β What will the next album be? Β Defiance, disobedience, dissension, heresy, insubordination, insurgency?) Β It’s heavy like old Skid Row. Β It hasΒ squealing, howling solos like old Skid Row and riffsΒ reminiscentΒ of the classic stuff. Β Johnny’s throwing everything he’s got into his performance. Β  It’s just…not memorable.

The most striking song is the first one, “Kings of Demolition”, which is really good. Β Only problem: Β It’s more than just a little similar to “Monkey Business” from Slave. Β “Monkey Business” is a great heavy song, but you’re not going to top it by re-writing it. Β It’s downhill from there. Β I must have played this EP eight or nine times now, and I still can’t remember how “Let’s Go”, “Get Up”, and “Stitches” go. Β They are all heavy, riffy…and non-descript. Β The only song that stands out is “This is Killing Me”, the token ballad (right smack in the middle of the EP), and it stands out only because it’s a ballad. Β You can hear the (intended?) similarity to a certain hit ballad by the Sebastian version of Skid Row…but without his soaring vocals. Β Once again, you can’t create a new memorable song if you’re repeating an old one.

Sorry guys. Β I’m usually in favour of bands carrying on with new members, because I’d rather have that than no band at all. Β Unfortunately, Skid Row needs Sebastian Bach as much as Sebastian Bach wants to be in Skid Row. Β Johnny can take a proud bow, because he’s no slouch and he did the best job possible. Β I wanna see it happen.

REVIEW: Rockhead – Rockhead (1992)

A lot of Rock-haters (people who hate Metallica’s output from 1991-2003) have no idea that the man is quite the musician himself. Canadians remember the Payola$ and Rock & Hyde, butΒ then there was Rockhead. Bob Rock found a great Canadian punk rock vocalist named Steve Jack, who as it turns out, was also a great screamer. Some of the screams on this album areΒ unreal — check out “Bed Of Roses”, “Heartland”, and “Chelsea Rose” for some awesome vocals. Β Face it, Canada has some great screamers (James LaBrie, Gerald McGhee, Sebastian Bach!) but Steve Jack was a contender.

This album was born during the the difficult Motley Crue sessions (not to mention a Bon Jovi album), while Bob was going through a divorce. Β This comes out in the song “Warchild”. Β In fact it ACTUALLY comes out during that song: Β  Bob can be heard yelling and throwing stuff around the studio at one point, which he recorded after a painful phone call.

I don’t find there is a weak track on this album, and plenty of Bob’s buddies show up. Β  Art Bergmann, Billy Duffy, Paul Hyde, Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora all contribute songwriting skills. Β Duffy and Sambora also contribute solos. Β  From the screamy Aerorock of “Bed of Roses” to the metal of “Heartland” to the acoustic Zeppelinesque “Angelfire”, every single track is worth a listen. Β It’s a diverse album actually, running the gamut from light to dark and embracing different sides of rock. Β  Boozy, bluesy, epic, acoustic, you name it. Β Its roots are firmly planted in the 1970’s, but if this had come out in 1989, it could have spawned 5 singles.

Sonically if you like Bob Rock, you will like this. Β It’s right in the ballpark of that Motley Crue/Keep the Faith sound he had going on during that period. Β Big big drums, layers of guitars, a lil’ bit of keyboards here and there, but mostly, lots and lots and lots of guitars.
