Six Horsemen Bring Their Top Five Metallica Deep Cuts to Grab A Stack of Rock

Metallica deep cuts?  What are the rules then?  Well, rules didn’t matter at the end of the day; we just picked a bunch of tunes we liked a lot.  Your panel was:

We had some brilliant thrashers, a few curveballs…and definitely a couple surprises.  I feel everyone defended their choices ably, however I was the recipient of a bit of roasting in the comments section.  Repeatedly.  Did I deserve it?  Probably.

We also took an “Ask Harrison” question from Peter Kerr of Rock Daydream Nation, and did some very cool unboxings.  There was a bit of “repetition” tonight, but a good time was had by all.  Thank you for watching.

A week off next week — super secret regal recording with Peter Kerr instead!  We’ll be back December 15.

Exploiting Their Supremacy: Top Five Metallica Deep Cuts on Grab A Stack of Rock

GRAB A STACK OF ROCK With Mike and the Mad Metal Man

Episode 43:  Top 5 METALLICA Deep Cuts

It is finally time to do Metallica some Justice!

We planned to do a Metallica show back on May 5, but regular readers know what happened that day.  I had to cancel, and deal with a former co-host instead.  There always seems to be something getting in the way of Metallica.  This week we lost my dear Uncle Paul, but the show will go on, and I will pay tribute to this great man on Friday night.

Cinco de Listo is back!  We wait with baited (Motor)breath to see what Top Five Deep Cuts our expert panel will be presenting this time!  On hand will be:

We are going simple with the rules.  A “deep cut” in this case simply means a non-single.  There will be lots of complaints I’m sure, but let’s focus on the great songs instead!  Hopefully we will name some tunes you absolutely need to hear.

Will Justice be done?  Our Merry Band of Metal Fans will do out best tonight at 8:00 PM sharp, Eastern Standard Time.

A week off next week — super secret regal recording with Peter Kerr instead!  We’ll be back December 15.

Mike opens up his new KISS shirt from Aaron! [Video]

First off, apologies to Jex Russell and everybody I forgot to thank in this video. Still running on the high from Friday night’s show.  I went from that, to taping a great Tim’s Vinyl Confessions at 6:30 AM Saturday morning, to video making and editing.

For those who watched, the most grievous error I made Friday night was forgetting to open up this KISS shirt that I got from Aaron KMA.

Please enjoy this video I made in gratitude, and the YouTube shorts from Friday night as well.

#1077: Lunch With Aaron & Son

RECORD STORE TALES #1077: Lunch With Aaron & Son

In the last five years, my world has changed drastically.  We lost Jen’s mom, we’ve lost friends, but on the positive side, we’ve also lost weight!  The world has gone through a transformative pandemic, but one constant is Aaron KMA, a man I have not seen since 2018.  I am happy to report that Aaron is still out there being Aaron – bearing gifts and warmth as always!

We met halfway, at the Elk & Finch in Southampton Ontario.  He brought his son, who I’ve never met before, but has good taste in hamburgers.  We sat down to some amazing food, including the best smoked salmon I’ve ever tasted in my life.  This is it: as good as it gets.

Food aside, I knew Aaron would arrive bearing gifts, and as usual, he did:  Books, CDs, and more.  Let’s have a gander, shall we?  Let’s go through the contents of Aaron’s gift bag bit by bit.

Not pictured, there were four bottle of Iron Maiden’s Trooper beer!  Not pictured because I didn’t think I should pull out liquor of my own at a restaurant.  You understand of course!  You are probably familiar with this acclaimed brew already.  That made up a lot of the weight of the gift bag.  Much of the rest of the weight was taken up by books.  One book specifically.

The big one is The Art of Classic Rock by Paul Brushkin, with foreward by Alice Cooper.  Aaron has showed this off on my show before.  We also have rock magazines (with CDs)!  Other reading:  Gods of the Hammer by Geoff Pevere, the story of Teenage Head.  The “Hammer” in this case is Hamilton Ontario.  Keeping a punk vibe, Aaron also gave me Perfect Youth: The Birth of Canadian Punk by Sam Sutherland.  Finally, it’s The Story of Tommy which is really gorgeous!

I’m very excited about the music.  I actually didn’t own a copy of Garbage’s self titled debut, until now.  This one is signed by all four members, and lo and behold, it’s dedicated to Mike!  Just a coincidence I assure you but how cool is that?  I now also owned Backwaxed by Anvil, which I was missing until now, and now I also own the Hip side project Stripper’s Union.

I get more and more excited the further we go!

These Hot Wheels are really cool.  I think I need to open them.  The Yellow Submarine (Beatles) is groovy.  The USS Enterprise though…I just enjoy swooshing those ships around.  This Enterprise is NCC-1701 from the 2009 film Star Trek, directed by JJ Abrams and starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk.  (I have to be honest, I prefer Paul Wesley’s Kirk from Strange New Worlds, which I am trying to get Aaron to watch!)  I enjoy these very much, and this is not the first time Aaron has found an appropriate Hot Wheels to gift me.

Onto the shirt, which was actually the first item in the bag.  Jeff Woods is legendary in my circles – he is THE Legend of Classic Rock.  Jeff Woods even contributed to the Sausagefest countdowns a number of times.  Aaron, however, isn’t a radio listener and isn’t intimate with the works of Mr. Woods as I am.   Yet Aaron found this shirt, thought of me, and put it in the bag.  I am thrilled.  This is a shirt I would have bought myself anyway!

Finally…

I just loved the Sheik.  I have always loved the Sheik.  He was one of the greatest villains in WWF history.  We talked to Spenny about the Iron Sheik back in May on Grab A Stack of Rock.  And now I have a little loveable stuffed Sheik of my own.   I couldn’t be more happy.  This is the kind of gift that just screams “Mike”.

Aaron, it was a delight to hook up again and finally meet your son.  I hope we do something like this again soon.  I could go for some salmon again.  And the coffee was great too.

Three cheers for Aaron!

Birthday Bonanza on Grab A Stack of Rock with Harrison, Tim, Aaron & Grant!

Thank you Grant, Aaron, Tim & Harrison for celebrating my birthday with me!  We did a Nigel Tufnel Top Ten – Mike’s favourite birthday years.  We showed off all his gifts this year, and looked at photos and gifts from years past.

Tim treated us to a guitar solo, and the guys had cool stuff to show us as always.  Aaron’s signed Mystique poster was a highlight!

Lastly, Mike unboxed the new Grab A Stack of Rock theme song picture disc by vinyart.co.  Tee Bone Erickson’s first vinyl.  Now I need him to sign it!  Thanks for celebrating everyone!

A Triumphant Arkells Appreciation Friday with Mr. Books and Nurse Kat

A massive thank you to Nurse Kat for spending her Friday night with Aaron and I, talking Arkells!  Though none of us could be called hardcore Arkells veterans, our passion certainly came through.  Since falling in love with the band roughly 18 months ago, Kat has seen Arkells 13 times.  From New York to LA to Glasgow, she had a lot of cool stories to tell.  Meanwhile, Aaron filled us in on the early years, as he saw them even before the Jackson Square debut album was out.

A common theme for this show was the power of music to connect with the human heart.  Kat and I both had some pretty emotional experiences to an Arkells soundtrack.  This is a band that really seems to have a direct line to the mind and soul.

I presented my Nigel Tufnel Top Ten Arkells songs (from the albums I own) and Kat provided some cool live clips and photos.  We hope you enjoy!

Mike’s Nigel Tufnel Top Ten Arkells tunes:

11. “Savannah” from Morning Report – acoustic anthemic awesomeness.

10. “Passenger Seat” from Morning Report – what a falsetto!  So much passion!

9. “Hung Up” from Morning Report – “The gatekeepers are keepin’ me out!” – what a hook!

8. “Coffee” from Michigan Left – Powerful lyrics with personal meaning.

7. “On Paper” from Michigan Left – killer chorus, powerful rock.

6. “Whistleblower” from Michigan Left – as hard as Arkells songs get, based on that riff.

5. “Michigan Left” from Michigan Left – “Decorations won’t be wasted” – one of their best choruses!  And that percussion!  Oh man.

4. “Come to Light” from High Noon – channeling 80’s Bowie?  You be the judge.

3. “Leather Jacket” from High Noon – the song that got me to buy the album in the first place.

2. “11:11” from High Noon – so hard to narrow things down to only four songs from High Noon, but this one is just hook laden and nostalgic.

1. “Fake Money” from High Noon – This song is pure hooks, from start to finish, with an angry bent.

Honorable mentions – “Cynical Bastards”, “Crawling Through the Window”, “Book Club”, “Drake’s Dad”

Jen’s #1 – “Leather Jacket”

Arkells Appreciation Friday with Mr. Books and Nurse Kat

GRAB A STACK OF ROCK With Mike, Aaron and Nurse Kat

Episode 25:  Arkells Appreciation

25 episodes!  We’ve had ups, downs and cancelled episodes, but we finally made it to 25.  This week we celebrate with a band I’ve recently fallen in love with:  Hamilton’s Arkells!  Just what is it about this band that resonates with people?  The music, lyrics, Canadiana, or something else?  The natural charisma of Max Kerman is a big factor.  I’ll be talking about all this and more with fan Nurse Kat.  She’s seen them THIRTEEN times in a year, and has some merch to show.  I will be listing my Nigel Tufnel Top Ten Arkells tunes.

Joining Kat and I tonight will be Mr. Books from the KMA, who saw the band once, leaving me as the only one who hasn’t!

A Miracle of a Show! Aaron KMA and Harrison the Mad Metal Man Grabbed Stacks of Rock!

That was a blast (as always!)  By popular demands, Aaron returned!  True to form, the man known as “Mr Books” presented…books!  Leonard Cohen, Charlie Watts, a certain black guitar wielded by David Gilmore, and more!  As for Harrison, he too had some books to show, as well as some interesting discs by Concrete Blonde and a smashingly cool lightsaber!

I unboxed the new Queen Miracle box set, a Black Sabbath Sabotage, and a Def Leppard From London to Vegas.  We took a look at the contents of each.  The Queen box set is suitably majestic, featuring a lovely hardcover book and loads upon loads of music to listen to.

“Ask Harrison” returned tonight, with questions from Lana (via Tee Bone) and California Girl, and a bit of a curveball “Ask Mike” as well.  Warning:  there could be more “Ask Mike” coming in the future!

Thanks for tuning in and we’ll see you next week.

Aaron KMA Grabs a Stack of Rock with Mike and the Mad Metal Man

GRAB A STACK OF ROCK…with Mike and the Mad Metal Man
Episode 7:  Special guest Aaron KMA

Aarons back!  Due to popular demand, the big guy has agreed to return for another hour of rock.  Tonight, I plan on unboxing my Queen The Miracle box set, and others with time permitting.  I have two sealed Rush box sets (Hemispheres and Permanent Waves) and a sealed Metallica (Master of Puppets) that could be opened tonight.  It’s up to you — whatever you want!

Harrison the Mad Metal Man and Aaron always have something interesting to show and tonight will be no exception.  So let’s wait and see!

We also have the popular “Ask Harrison” returning tonight, with Lana (via Tee Bone) and MarriedandHeels offering up a pair of questions and a curveball.  Hopefully we will learn a little about the elusive Australian madman and his homeland tonight.

Friday December 16 at 7:00 P.M. E.S.T. Enjoy on YouTube or on Facebook.

Stacks of 8-Tracks, CDs, Lizzy & ZZ with Mike and the Mad Metal Man & special guests Tim Durling and Aaron KMA

Tim Durling‘s Holy Grail this week was a serious rarity:  Europe’s The Final Countdown (1986) on 8-track!  It was worth the wait, seeing that unusual tape on that format.

We had a surprise guest:  Aaron from the KMA, who showed some discs and books!  And of course Harrison the Mad Metal Man had some interesting items on display.  As for me, I unboxed the Thin Lizzy Rock Legends box set and an unassembled ZZ Top Eliminator model kit.

Fun Friday night.  Thanks for watching!
