R.I.P. James Gray ex-Blue Rodeo, ex-Rheostatics, 1960-2013. I saw him live in concert a few times, and he was great. It’s hard to replace a character like Bobby Wiseman, but I think James did an excellent job.

REVIEW: Blue Rodeo – Tremolo (1997)
BLUE RODEO – Tremolo (1997 Warner)
I first saw Blue Rodeo live in July 1991, just after highschool graduation. Instant fan! I saw them again in 1996 and 1998, supporting Nowhere To Here and Tremolo, respectively. Both albums grew on me tremendously after I saw the show. Before that, I struggled with them a bit, not quite liking them, not quite disliking them, and not wanting to give up on them. Funny how that goes. I rate them today in my top 3 Blue Rodeo albums, along with Five Days in July.
Tremolo requires your complete attention, this is not background music, although it will still sound great in the background. This is one of those deeper albums, one that needs multiple listens. I find it reveals different faces when I listen to it in different settings as well. The cottage is better than the car, for example. For me.
Nowhere To Here and Tremelo, albums #6 and #7, both originated at the same time as Five Days. The recent Blue Rodeo box set, 1984-1993 contains early different versions of “Moon & Tree” and “No Miracle No Dazzle”. Tremolo is much like a brother record to Nowhere To Here, an acoustic brother record. They both share the same laid back origins, the same jammy style and meandering arrangements. They also share the same lineup which was my favourite: Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor, Bazil Donovan, Glenn Milchem, keyboardist James Gray and pedal steel player Kim Dechampes.
Most songs are mellow, laid back, spare in arrangement and very acoustic. At times, this is also the most “country” sounding of Blue Rodeo records. Witness Jim’s “Shed My Skin”, which is beautiful. “No Miracle No Dazzle” is an upbeat one from Greg, another awesome tune, while “Falling Down Blue” is for slow dancing. All of these are loaded with spirit, be it Jim’s melancholy wordplay or Greg’s gleeful guitar playing. All the players shine on this album, not necessarily as solosists (although that is often the case), but how they all mesh together. The blend of instruments is flawless.
I still think of albums as having a side one and a side two. I had to tape Tremolo on a cassette so I could play it in the car back in ’97. It’s “side two” of Tremolo that I really like. “It Could Happen To You” was a popular upbeat Jim single that received a lot of airplay. “Dragging On” is an atmospheric Jim tune, with some beautiful watery keyboards backing it, with fantastic lyrics of heartbreak that only Jim can sing. You left a hole in me, and the rain comes pouring in, sometimes I’m swept away…”
“Brother Andre’s Heart” and “Frogs’ Lullaby” work together as one Greg tune, quite extended and jammy, 12 minutes in total. After a tune like that, they had to end it with a corker! It’s the best song on the album as far as I’m concerned, and conspicuous by being so different: “Graveyard”.

And I love that you were brave enough,
To sleep with all my friends.
Greg was pissed off at someone, lemme tell you, and this sounds like some kind of punk-a-billy song.
This album has 14 songs on it, and I’ve only talked about around half of them. The rest of them are also great, but different songs will appeal to different people. I wanted to talk about the ones that get me almost every time. You might find that you really like a song like “Fallen From Grace” because it reminds you of the early Blue Rodeo country-blues vibe.
If you love Blue Rodeo, I consider this album a must. It’s not an instant pleasure, but it is a very rewarding listen. It continues to reveal new layers of music and lyrical poetry to me today. In my humble personal opinion, I don’t think Blue Rodeo ever attained this lofty standards again.

REVIEW: Coleman Biowipes (Sausagefest XII)

July 5-6 2013 was the weekend: the annual all-rock, all dude Countdown event known as SAUSAGEFEST. This particular installment being Sausagefest XII. As discussed in Record Store Tales Part 30, and as seen in last year’s video, I suffer from a certain level of anxiety regarding the restroom arrangements. As in, there aren’t any. And I’m not as young as I once was, and the plumbing doesn’t always work as well as it used to when I was in my 20’s.
To the rescue came Biowipes, by Coleman! Not only can you shit with a clean bottom, but also a clean conscience: the Biowipes completely biodegrade in just 21 days. (Less I’m sure if you ate the bacon-wrapped jalapenos that we consumed.)
The Biowipes are large enough (20 x 25 cm) and tough enough to handle whatever you need to do. There are 30 of these moistened towelettes in each package, by my estimation and usage, probably enough to get you through 10 days in the woods.

It’s Canada Day Up Canada Way: Lil’ Shit Part II
In the continuing saga of all the pets in the greater LeBrain clan, you may recall that Lil’ Shit was the most recent addition to the family. Bass clarinetist extraordinaire Kathryn Ladano recently acquired Daisi aka Lil’ Shit, below. I finally got to meet Daisi this past Canada Day weekend!
It was a great weekend full of bonfires and awesome Canadian scenery too.

REVIEW: Crazy Heart (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

I grew up on this kind of music. I remember long drives to the cottage, singing away to the hits by Hank Jr., Hank Sr., Johnny, Willie, and Waylon…all those great artists. So to hear Jeff Bridges perform his character Bad Blake’s songs on this soundtrack is already in the ballpark of music I love. The great thing about this soundtrack is that it’s loaded with awesome original tunage such as “Fallin’ & Flying'” and “The Weary Kind”, but it also has great oldies by Townes, Buck and Waylon. There’s even a classic Lightnin’ Hopkins blues.
Buck Owens’ “Hello Trouble” (1964) is lyrically as apt as ever. Townes Van Zandt’s “If I Needed You” (1972) is laden with emotion within an inventive dual-track lead vocal. But it’s “Once A Gambler” by Hopkins that I am spellbound by. It’s shocking how vibrant this old recording is, and it’s gotta be 50 years old. Much like the singer’s name, the playing, singing and song itself are electrifying. You couldn’t record this better today with all the computers in the world.
Meanwhile, Jeff’s performance on “Somebody Else” is more rock n’ roll; this is an original tune by T Bone Burnett and Stephen Bruton. It has a live sound to it. Bridges’ lead vocal edges into nasal territory, but the dude was 61 years old at the time. Another new tune, “I Don’t Know” by Ryan Bingham is firmly in 80’s Steve Earle territory, and that’s fine by me.
The main song from the soundtrack is “Fallin’ & Flying”, which appears twice: Once sung by Jeff, and once as a duet with his co-star Colin Ferrell. A couple years back, I sent Aaron a CD with the Jeff/Colin version of “Fallin’ & Flyin'” on it. His comment:
I saw Crazy Heart and I thought they did a fairly credible job, but I very rarely like it when Hollywood types do these types of films. Leave the singing to the singers (I’m looking at you, Gwenyth Paltrow!). Still, this Bridges/Ferrell track is roadhouse-worthy.
Sure, in some cases I would agree with that. Nobody needed Eddie Murphy to make an album for example. In the case of “Fallin’ & Flyin'”, I really like this track. It was written to suit Jeff’s leathery but expressive singing voice. Jeff Bridges is no slouch; I’m sure Kris Kristofferson taught him a few tricks when they jammed behind the scenes during Heaven’s Gate. Jeff’s slant on “I Don’t Know” is more country than Bingham’s and features piano and squeezebox. I believe I am well on record for being a fan of the Dude in the first place.
There’s only one tune I didn’t like, which is “Reflecting Light” by Sam Phillips (2004). Sorry Sam. It’s not you; it’s me.
My only regret is picking up the single disc version before I knew there was a double disc with even more tunes. At some point in the future I’ll trade up. I got this used, at Encore Records, so not a huge expense (I paid $10) and I can always trade up.

Part 188: “Limited Edition”
RECORD STORE TALES Part 188: “Limited Edition”
In 1994, Garth Brooks issued his 10 million copy selling compilation album, The Hits. On the front cover was an interesting notation: “limited time only”.
Now, I’ve bought discs that were limited edition before and were numbered to prove it. For example I recently picked up #5945 of the “Credo” single by Fish. Even so…that’s a lot of copies out there for a single by Fish. How many copies of a Fish single would be made anyway? And aren’t all singles limited edition? After all, they aren’t going to make more once they’ve run their course, no matter who the artist is. Onto the next thing.
And then of course you have some seriously limited edition items, like that recent Thin Lizzy Live at the BBC box set! I’m not sure how many copies were made, but everybody’s sold out, and now you have to buy it from people asking way too much. Over $250 USD on Amazon right now. Forget it! That is limited edition.
When Garth plastered “limited time only” all over The Hits, it quickly became a joke. We ordered 50 copies of them, and sold most during the first week. We ordered another 50 copies, as Christmas was coming soon. Those sold. We ordered 20 more after Christmas had passed, and continued to order them every week into the new year whenever we sold out. Some limited edition!
10,000,000 people bought it, and I’m sure 99.9% would have bought it without that “limited time” tag. With great pomp and circumstance, Garth then had the master tapes destroyed.
The master tapes to a freakin’ greatest hits album! Who cares?
It was really hard to take the phrase “limited edition” seriously after that. The next release that came out that truly was a limited edition was the Smashing Pumpkins box set The Aeroplane Flies High, but even that enjoyed a second run when the first printing sold out.
So: the lesson here folks is, when it says limited edition, be skeptical! Very few things are, and the ones that really are limited aren’t always advertized as such. Record labels want to make money, right?
Unfortunately, Garth didn’t put this one on his box set!
