REVIEW: Van Halen – “Best of Both Worlds” 7″ picture sleeve single

I’ve been hinting at this for a couple weeks now. Β  No more teasing! Β For this is…THE WEEK OF SINGLES!Β  Each day this week I’ll be bringing you reviews and images of a recent single acquisition. Β For the purpose of this week, EPs count as singles. Β First up comes one I teased you about in my Overload of Van Vinyl gallery.

 

VAN HALEN – “Best of Both Worlds” (1986 Warner 7″ single)

Craig Fee returned with this single (among many) from Jerry’s Records in Pittsburgh. Β It was actually $3, not the $2 on the sticker (no big deal). Β About the store itself, Craig says:

Jerry’s Records in Pittsburgh has incredible online reviews for a reason. Β When I was last there, Jerry and I chatted about the legendary Peter Dunn’s Vinyl Museum(s) in Toronto. Β We laughed about the random samples of Bible verse stamped on every single record sleeve that Peter sold. Β It was completely over the top! Β Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one who WTF’d the first time I encountered it. Β 

I asked Craig to pick up any Van Halen singles with picture sleeves that he could find. Β Of those, “Best of Both Worlds” has one of the least interesting covers. Β No pictures of the band, just a generic looking sketch of a globe and two jet planes. Β Not even a proper Van Halen logo to be found. Β This lack of anything amusing on the cover is compensated for by the exclusivity of the tracks.

The A-side is a version that I didn’t have before. Β It’s a 3:58 edit version of the song, chopping 50 seconds out. Β The edit is quite noticeable at the 1:00 mark, where the second verse is chopped out, and then replaced after the chorus. Β It’s into the guitar solo from there, and then the final verse. Β  Missing is the “There’s a picture in a gallery, of a fallen angel looked a lot like you,” verse.

Van Halen never released the ubiquitousΒ Live Without a Net home video on any kind of official audio format. Β Some of those songs, such as the live version of “Love Walks In” did make it onto an unofficial CD called In ConcertΒ (found at Encore Records in Kitchener). Β “Best of Both Worlds” did not make it onto In Concert, but here it is on the B-side. Β It’s live in New Haven, complete with the extended intro, bringing the track to over 6 minutes. Β The intro features Eddie and Sammy doing a fun call and response bit and I’m glad it wasn’t edited out for the single release. Β I’ll always have a fondness for the old Live Without a Net versions. Β Back in ’86-88 I didn’t have the money to buy every single album by bands that I liked. Β I didn’t have 5150, and Live Without a Net was on TV enabling me to record it. Β Therefore I probably know this version of “Best of Both Worlds” better than the 5150 version! Β It’s a little tougher, where the album version’s a tad too sterile.

I don’t mind this song. Β It’s not a Van Halen classic, but it’s still catchy. Β Unlike some of the other singles, it wasn’t keyboard based. Β That gave it an edge to my 16 year old self who didn’t like keyboards as much as guitars. Β Craig on the other hand had a different reaction to it:

“Best Of Both Worlds” is the song that might’ve been the catalyst for my divorce of Van Hagar as the logical continuation of my favourite band. Β The lyrics are absolute fucking cornball nonsense. Β Look them up. Β You’ll see what I mean. Β The Live Without A Net version on the B-side of the single brought me vivid flashbacks of those awful pink sweat pants Eddie wore onstage for the concert video. Β Those terrible Sammy and Mike harmonies. Β That cheesy walk Mike, Sammy and Ed did onstage. Β Sammy’s spray painting of the shoes and the accompanying ad-lib were possibly the lamest shit I’ve ever heard. Β Do you think David Lee Roth would’ve had a pair of fucking SHOES thrown onstage? Β Hell no! Β There’s a reason I don’t own a copy of this myself.

He does have some valid points there. Β Thankfully this 7″ single contains just the music, and not those cheeseball visuals! Β Why was Eddie so into sweat pants? Β I blame Sammy Hagar. Β For me, this was a great find and a great way to kick off Singles Week at LeBrain HQ. Β Check back tomorrow for another rarity! Β (A brand new release in fact.)

GALLERY: Four Great Finds! (with store report card – Encore Records)

During a trip to Encore Records in Kitchener, Ontario, I found some pretty cool stuff among their used discs. Β I used to work with the guy behind the counter, Chris — trained him in fact. Β We had a chance to catch up and discuss the difficulties of being a collector. Β Piles and piles of discs, an expanding collection and lack of space for it. Β Filing systems. Β How easy it is to get behind in your filing. Β Good to know there are still kindred spirits out there.

Thanks for the discs Chris, and without further delay…

1. VAN HALEN – In Concert

This double CD is at least partially taken from Live Without A Net, the old Van Halen home video. Β That’s cool to me — some of those versions, like “Love Walks In”, were the originals that I was first familiar with. Β It’s weird today hearing Sammy Hagar play guitar solos on Van Halen songs, but that’s how I first heard them. Β $9 used.

2. HELIX – Wild In The Streets (Rock Candy remaster)

PROS: Β These hard-to-find (in Canada) Rock Candy reissues have great liner notes and pictures. Β CONS: It lacks the lyric sheet from my old Capitol Records version. Β This one was expensive ($14 used) but the greatΒ Heavy Metal OverloRd tells me they are well worth it.

3. FISH – “Credo” CD single

Limited edition, #5945. Β Cool? Β Yeah, but how many copies did they make of a Fish single? Β Anyway, this has two non-album cuts, a 7″ remix of the title track and a song called “Poet’s Moon”. Β “Credo” itself is a great song from Internal Exile. Β Great cover art by Mark Wilkinson! Β $6 used.

4. IRON MAIDEN – Virtual XI with limited edition lenticular cover

This was a limited edition (expensive in Canada) that had a 3D cover similar to the current Kiss Monster CD. Β I tried to get an idea of this in the photos. Β Look at Eddie’s finger in relation to the boy’s headphones. Β You can see it’s not in the same place in the two photos. Β It’s much cooler in person. Β Now, I knowΒ Aaron is probably going to give me shit for buying a Blaze Bayley album — any Blaze Bayley album — twice. Β But it’s more about the Maiden collection than Blaze. Β This is one I’d wanted back in the day but completely forgotten about. Β $10 used.

REPORT CARD

Encore Records, 54 Queen St. South, Kitchener ON, (519) 744-1370

Encore is as good asΒ as any of the stores that Aaron and I reported on in Toronto. Β Sure, I’m biased in that I did train the guy behind the counter, and it was great having a conversation with somebody who understands my point of view vis-Γ -vis collecting. Β But their selection is second-to-none in this town (rock, indi, roots, jazz, blues, vinyl), with fair prices, and excellent quality. Β Not one blemish on any of the discs that I purchased. Β  As an added note I found a number of Guided By Voices singles for Aaron (some stealthily pictured below) — although he is apparently banned from purchasing them at this time, until he wins the lottery!

For these reasons, Encore’s grade is:

REVIEW: VAN HALEN – “Right Now” cassette single

VAN HALEN – “Right Now”Β (1992 cassette single, Warner)

“Right Now”, the cassette single version, – featuring two non-album versions of the title track.

There are two interesting things about this cassette.Β  First, I’ve never encountered that “Right Now” remix on any other format.Β  No CD, no vinyl, nothing that has a longer lifespan than a cassette.Β  Cassettes are not that durable.Β  I want to get this thing burned to CD as soon as possible.Β Β  Second, the remix is actually quite cool.Β  It features an organ solo instead of guitar, and you won’t hear this version anywhere else.Β  Any serious fan of Edward Van Halen would be interested in hearing it.

I find it a little odd that the b-side “Man on a Mission” appears twice.Β  Shame about that, as I consider it easily one of the worst songsΒ on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.Β 

3/5 stars.Β  A neat little-known oddity.

REVIEW: Van Halen – “Can’t Stop Loving You” (2 CD with tin)

You lucky, lucky boys and girls!Β  Another double feature review?Β  And this time it’s all Van Halen?Β  Today, you get Part One – Can’t Stop Loving You!

REVIEW:Β  Van Halen – Can’t Stop Loving You (parts I & II, inc. collector’s tin.)

In the 90’s, CD singles were a big deal especially in Europe.Β  Probably due to quirks of the British chart rules which limits a single to 4 songs, bands often doubled up by releasing double singles with each part sold separately.Β  There were also cases of triple singles, or singles with exclusive tracks on the vinyl versions, in order to get you, the consumer, to buy it more than once therefore charting it higher.

Can’t Stop Loving You by Van Halen was released this way, but without all the bonus tracks that really made it worthwhile.Β  Instead, you could get a collector’s tin to store both discs in.

Part I of the single (w022cd) came in a standard jewel case and the following b-sides.

  • 2. Crossing Over (non-LP track, Japanese bonus track for Balance)
  • 3. Right Now (live)
  • 4. Man on a Mission (live)

The case has no indication of a second disc being available.Β  The two live songs are from the album Live: Right here, right now.Β  The bonus track “Crossing Over” is incredible, and well worth hunting down for any Van Hagar fan.Β  This thumper is apparently based on music that Edward had written years earlier, and was finished off by Sammy’s haunting lyrics about journeying to the great beyond.Β  Lyrically it hits the spot, and musically, it cascades atmospherically.Β  It has a lot of bass, runs very slowly, but is unique in the Van Hagar canon, there is nothing else like it.Β  It fits the darker, mellow vibe of some of Balance‘s more thoughtful moments.

Part II (wo288cdx) Β is only worth buying for the tin itself.Β  There are no exclusive bonus tracks to be had on this disc.Β  The tin is your standard CD tin, with the Van Halen “globe”-style logo embossed onto the front.Β  There’s a helpful (upside down) sticker on the front advertizing that you can also buy the other CD and store it in this case.Β  There is a foam insert inside to help protect your CD.Β  The back of the tin has a large sticker with notes and pictures, andΒ a tracklist forΒ the other CD as well — this is handy if you do end up storing them together.

Bonus tracks are as follows.Β  Once again all bonus tracks are simply lifted from the live album.Β  The A-side is the standard album version of “Can’t Stop Loving You”, which is also the same as the first CD.

Rating:

For part one, a solid 4/5 stars for the excellent bonus track “Crossing Over”

For part two, a dismal 2/5 stars.Β  It’s only there to look at really.
