REVIEW: Greta Van Fleet – From the Fires (2017)

GRETA VAN FLEET – From the Fires (2017 Republic Records)

Got 32 minutes to kill?ย  I have just the thing.

Frankenmuth, Michigan’s Greta Van Fleet won’t be disappearing any time soon, not with the release of their new “double EP” From the Fires.ย  Double EP?ย  For simplicity’s sake, we’ll just call it an album.ย  From the Fires has all four songs from their last EP, Black Smoke Rising, along with four new tracks.ย  Whatever you want to call it, if you missed Black Smoking Rising, then you’ll wanna get From the Fires ASAP!

Of course you will get their smash hit “Highway Tune”, which is still as exciting as the day we first heard it.ย ย Current single “Safari Song” is first on the new CD.ย  Greta’s biggest influence is the mighty Zeppelin, and “Safari Song” certainly has that bluesy Zep stomp.ย  Lots of “oh mamas”.ย  This mid-tempo rocker is quickly becoming a favourite of the airwaves.

The new “Edge of Darkness” sounds less like Zeppelin, although singer Joshua Kiszka bleeds Robert Plant.ย  “Edge of Darkness” recalls newer blues rock bands, but the voice immediately sounds like Plant.ย  Then “Flower Power” brings us back to hippy-era acoustic Zeppelin.ย  It’s more than a little derivative, but this band is young and only starting out.ย  Joshua Kiszka really blasts on the slow soulful “A Change is Gonna Come”.ย  What a singer — someone to keep an eye on!

Some of Greta’s more dramatic tunes appear closer to the end.ย  “Meet on the Ledge” has a plaintive, epic quality.ย  Then “Talk on the Street” goes upbeat, with a brilliant thrilling rocker.ย  These new tunes indicate that Greta is indeed still growing, and we haven’t heard what they’re capable of yet.ย  Yes, they can do vintage 1969 Led Zeppelin to a “T”, and they have the acoustic bases covered too.ย  The songwriting is growing, and their musicianship is already there.ย  Their playing sounds like a group who have several records under their belts already.

“Black Smoke Rising” has become a personal favourite Greta tune.ย  This closer boasts incredible vocals, melody and riffs.ย  It’ll put goosebumps on your arms if you let it.ย  It sounds very little like Led Zeppelin.ย  It actually recalls Triumph more than anyone, and that’s just fine.

Now is the time to get some Greta Van Fleet.ย  This release has all their studio recordings; a compact 32 minutes.ย  Double EP?ย  Van Halen had classic albums shorter than this.ย  From the Fires is an album.ย  Get it!

TV REVIEW: Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1, Chapter One (2017)

STAR TREK: Discoveryย Season 1, Chapter One (episodes 1-9 CBS All Access 2017)

The difficulty in adapting Star Trek to a new generation, while still being commercial enough for 2017’s television screens is enormous.ย  Creator Gene Roddenberry had rules he wanted adhered to within the Star Trek universe.ย  Perhaps most difficult was his “no conflict” mandate.ย  Roddenberry reasoned that when humanity reaches the technology in Star Trek’s future, there willย  no longer be need for Earthly conflict.ย  Food replicators mean nobody will go hungry.ย  Warp drive means infinite access to resources.ย  ย Antimatter provides unlimited energy.ย  All Earth’s problems are solved.ย  Exploration is the new adventure.ย  This was true of the original Star Trek in 1966, and Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987.

After Roddenberry died in 1991, Star Trek’s new “Great Bird” Rick Berman introduced conflict in clever ways, side-stepping Roddenberry’s mandate.ย  For dramatic purposes, 1993’s Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was set on an alien space station on the frontier.ย  It was run by a mixture of humans and aliens, and hosted a virtual space city of diverse travellers and residents.ย  Then Star Trek: Voyager broke the mold again in 1995.ย  A starship’s bridge was the main setting once again, but this time they were stranded on the other side of the galaxy with a crew made up of Starfleet officers and Maquis rebels.ย  The last Star Trek series under Berman’s control, 2001’s Enterprise, was a prequel set 100 years before Captain Kirk.ย  The Federation, Star Trek’s peaceful governing body, did not yet exist.ย  It was a transitional period between the Third World War and the familiar Star Trek we remember.

The first five

Over the past 50 years, Star Trek has been popular, but was surpassed by other franchises in financial success.ย  Star Wars and the Marvel universe both dwarf Star Trek today.ย  Some poor theatrical movies, such as Star Trek: Generationsย (film #7, 1994) and Star Trek: Nemesisย (#10, 2002) did not help.ย  By this time, Star Trek’s continuity had become so huge and entangled that writers struggled to come up with new ideas that a) hadn’t already been done, and b) didn’t contradict established Trek history.

JJ Abrams wisely rebooted Star Trek in 2009 by creating an alternate timeline.ย  Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) was thrust back in time with a Romulan named Nero (Eric Bana), triggering a series of events (including the premature death of Captain Kirk’s father, George Kirk) that re-wrote Star Trek history.ย  This allowed a clean slate based on the original classic trio of Star Trek:ย  Kirk, Spock and McCoy.ย  Largely, it worked.ย  Star Trek (film #11, 2009) did the trick.ย  2013’s Star Trek Into Darknessย (film #12) tried again by re-doing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in this new timeline.ย  That was less successful.ย  Re-doing the gimmick of destroying the Enterprise in 2016’s Star Trek: Beyondย (film #13) was far too soon and really seemed to derail the series.ย  It was the third destruction of the Enterprise on screen and it hadn’t been earned yet.

JJ Abrams and crew

The JJ Abrams universe is continuing with the 14th Star Trek film, somehow resurrecting George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) and perhaps undoing that timeline completely.ย  We shall see.

Meanwhile and with less fanfare, Star Trek has returned to television.ย  This seems an even bigger challenge than making a good Star Trek movie.ย  After all, television is nothing like it used to be.ย  Reality shows, serialised dramas, and sitcoms own TV now.ย  Attention spans are shortened and cerebral tales are fewer to be seen.ย  What does a new Star Trek look like, and what would the story be?

Fans haven’t been shy about what they wanted to see in a new Star Trek TV show.ย  Most would have loved a series set far into the future, as far beyond Picard as Picard was from Kirk.ย  But Star Trek isn’t being made for fans.ย  Today it needs to appeal to anyone and everyone, and simply not alienate too many fans.ย  So instead, we are getting another “prequel” series set before the time of Kirk.ย  10 years prior, in fact, and set in the original universe.ย  And as an added twist, the main character was to be Spock’s never-before-mentioned…adopted sister?

Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham

Fans shit the bed.

Star Trek: Discovery has faced (and continues to face) a lot of scepticism.ย  After all, this is hallowed ground.ย  You can’t just piss all over the history.ย  50 years of Trek, and we’ve never heard of Michael Burnham, the girl raised as a step-sister to Spock?

Fear not.ย  Trek lore has not only been respected in Discovery, but enhanced.ย  The Vulcan-centric episode “Lethe” is an emotional backstory to who Michael Burnham is, and even colours in the blanks behind Spock and Sarek’s estrangement.ย  It does so in such a way to soften even the hardest fan’s heart.

Burnham’s parents were killed in a Klingon attack, and she was raised on Vulcan by Sarek (James Frain) as his ward.ย  She was trained in the Vulcan ways, with logic as a tool to govern her human emotions.ย  This background also sets up her fall from grace.ย  Burnham is not the typical Star Trek main character.ย  In the series pilot “The Vulcan Hello”, first officer Burnham commits mutiny on board the USS Shenzhou.ย  Her actions in the first two episodes (including “Battle at Binary Stars”) set up the balance of the series:ย  war with the Klingons!

Being a mutineer making some pretty obvious blunders in spite of her supposed excellent Starfleet record, Burnham is a difficult character to like.ย  Fortunately, actor Sonequa Martin-Green was the right one for the job.ย  Formerly as Sasha on The Walking Dead, she was little more than a background character.ย  Martin-Green was largely untested, until now.ย  She has done an excellent job in her first half-season on Discovery.ย  She remained cold and difficult to like, until finally thawing a little bit in episode 4, “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry”.

Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou

Being difficult to like is intentional.ย  Discovery is not like other series.ย  It begins on the USS Shenzhou, captained by Phillipa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), a cool new ship with its bridge under the saucer section instead of on top.ย  Georgiou and first officer Burnham begin as scientists and explorers, but Burnham’s mutiny creates war and a new reality.ย  Episode 3, “Context is for Kings”, introduces Burnham’s new surroundings:ย  The USS Discovery NCC-1031.ย  The titular ship doesn’t even appear in the first two episodes.

The USS Discovery’s on-screen design is based on old concept paintings by Ralph McQuarrie, for the first Star Trek movie.ย  You’ll notice its Star Destroyer-like main hull.ย  McQuarrie designed all the ships in Star Wars too, and because this starship design is decades old, the USS Discovery fits the classic starfleet look.ย  This ship is bad ass.ย  The USS Enterprise, under command of Christopher Pike, is out there somewhere, but the Discovery is fresh off the line.ย  It has all the latest gadgets.ย  It’s a black project and a testbed for new technology, now needed desperately.ย  Over 8000 Federation citizens have died in the war in the first six months.ย  Defeat is not an option, and Discovery is rolled out to unleash war-winning technological breakthroughs.ย  It’s the Manhattan Project of the 2250s.ย  Top secret, high level shit going on here, folks.

Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca

How did Burnham, a mutineer, get such a cool assignment?ย  Well, first off, it might not seem that cool once you see what Discovery is up to.ย  And second, her captain, Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) is not a typical Starfleet captain.ย  He is single-minded and obsessed: victory is the only option and he will stop at nothing, no matter how unethical, to win the war.ย  Lorca is damaged goods, but he’s also very smart and because it’s a black project, he manages to operate under the radar with minimal oversight.ย  Bottom line:ย  He thinks Burnham will be useful, and so he uses her.ย  If you are stationed on Discovery, that means Lorca thinks you’re useful.

This setup enables some very different Trek dynamics.ย  Do you think the crew of the Discovery are happy to have a mutineer on board?ย  One who was responsible for the war in the first place?ย  Highly unlikely.ย  First officer Saru (Doug Jones) is one of her old shipmates from the Shenzhou.ย  Saru, a Kelpian, comes from a planet where his species are only food for other species.ย  Kelpians can sense the coming of death, and let’s just say that Saru’s spidey-senses start tingling when Burnham pops back in his life.ย  Doug Jones embodies the alien Saru perfectly, who is the series’ placeholder for a Spock or Data.ย  In a cool touch, Jones’ height is made abnormally alien with a pair of hooves.

Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets

Michael Burnham begins with only one friend on board, her geeky roommate Cadet Tilly (Mary Wiseman).ย  Tilly warms up to the audience when she confides that she’s going to be a captain one day, but she has a lot to learn first.ย  Burnham and Tilly work in engineering under Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Star Trek’s first openly gay main character (not counting John Cho’s Mr. Sulu, based on George Takei’s original Sulu who wasn’t written or portrayed as gay).

I want to pause here and say something that probably doesn’t need to be said.ย  It took 50 years for Star Trek to finally have an openly gay main character.ย  Star Trek has been so far ahead in many respects over the years, but way behind in this one way.ย  And I love it.ย  It’s been done so well.ย  As an added bonus, Stamets’ relationship with Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz) is critical to the overall plot of the first season.ย  Without getting too much into spoilers, they are both put into impossible situations because they care about each other.ย  Rapp and Cruz have turned their characters into favourites, and it’s way overdue and I love it.

Rapp’s Stamets could be the show’s most important character.ย  He was essentially drafted to serve aboard the Discovery, as the inventor of the top secret and experimental “spore drive”.ย  It is an organic propulsion system and if Stamets can refine it, Discovery will be able to be anywhere in the known universe in a blink — it is a game changer.ย  But it requires super-computing the likes of which doesn’t exist…unless Stamets can think outside the box.

Presiding over this is Captain Lorca; no-nonsense all the way.ย  He’s been given this ship, its crew of “polite scientists”, and a blank cheque.ย  His orders:ย  end the war in victory.ย  Lorca has his own deeply buried demons.ย  These come to light in “Choose Your Pain”, in which he is captured by the Klingons.

Chris Obi as T’Kuvma

Ah yes, the Klingons.ย  They are Star Trek’s most iconic villains…and in some cases, heroes.ย  They have an established culture, design and hierarchy.ย  Star Trek: Discovery takes its least successful leaps with the Klingons.ย  New ship, costume and makeup designs are really out of place.ย  Remember, this series takes place 10 years before Captain Kirk and “The Trouble With Tribbles”.ย  Klingons looked like humans in that era.ย  It’s a complicated mess of contradictions, but Discovery should not have made it worse by adding in yet another new Klingon design.

The Klingons are problematic in more ways than one.ย  The momentum of the show screeches to a halt any time we cut to Klingon drama.ย  Until recently on the show, they spoke Klingon with English subtitles almost all the time.ย  This changed in the last episode.ย  Never before on Star Trek have we had to endure this much Klingon language.ย  On original Trek, Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine, they had esteemed stage actors saying these lines mostly in English, and it was all very Shakespearean and perfect.ย  Christopher Plummer played a Klingon, fer frak’s sakes.ย  The first bald Klingon, I might add, and now on Discovery, they all seem to be bald.ย  And also bland.ย  The Klingons, with the exception of one, have not been remotely interesting.ย  The exception is L’Rell (Mary Cheiffo), a master of deception and spies.

Mary Chieffo as L’Rell

It is L’Rell who tortures Captain Lorca in “Choose Your Pain”, an important episode that also introduces Lt. Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif) and Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson).ย  ย Mudd is a fan favourite character, going back to season one of the original series.ย  As a con man played by Roger C. Carmel in 1966, he is remembered as both comedy relief and a threat.ย  When we meet him on Discovery, he’s a prisoner of the Klingons.ย  Wilson was a casting boon.ย  His Mudd is more dangerous and deadly than Carmel’s, but no less enjoyable.ย  Count on seeing more of Harcourt Fenton Mudd, particularly in the series’ best episode “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad”.

That episode,ย “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad” can also be used to highlight a show weakness.ย  That is recycling previous used Star Trek story devices.ย ย “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad” features a time loop that is very similar to one in The Next Generation’s “Cause and Effect”.ย  There are others as well.ย  A planet that changes the personality of an alien character: “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” is like “The Other Side of Paradise”.ย  You can keep going.

However there have also been sparks of originality.ย  ย Lt. Stamets’ spore drive opens up some new concepts previously unexplored in Trek, inspired by more recent discoveries in the quantum field.ย  A few episodes challenge ethics in the face of emergencies.ย  The format of a serialised story is unusual in Star Trek.ย  Long story arcs were previously used in Enterprise and Deep Space Nine, but not to this degree.ย  This is what audiences today are familiar with.ย  Sonequa Martin-Green is now an expert thanks to her time on The Walking Dead.

Star Trek: Discovery will return in January for Season 1, Chapter Two.ย  It has also been renewed for a further season beyond this.ย  This mid-season break will give them a chance to address some problems.ย  Pacing is an issue when we cut to Klingon scenes.ย  The language issue might have been rectified recently with the introduction of a universal translator.ย  It would also be nice to settle some continuity problems, especially visually.ย  Will we see traditional Starfleet uniforms, for example?ย  We know they are being used around this period, due to their appearance in 1965’s pilot episode “The Cage”, which actually takes place two years prior to Discovery in the timeline.ย  (This also raises the possibility of a future meeting between Captains Lorca and Pike, and a reunion of Spock and Burnham.)

Jeffrey Hunter and Leonard Nimoy as Captain Pike and Mr. Spock, in original uniforms (1965)

Star Trek series typically have a bumpy first season as kinks get worked out.ย  If we assume this pattern will continue, then Discovery should turn out to be an exciting show for Trek fans.ย  Certainly the space battle action scenes have been highlights.ย  Let’s see more of that.

Shazad Latif as Lt. Tyler

Let’s also see more of characters like Dr. Culber, Paul Stammets, Captain Lorca, and Ash Tyler.ย  Tyler, by the way, is one of the most controversial characters.ย  There are fan theories (too many spoilers to discuss!) that suggest Tyler may not be who he thinks he is.ย  Season 1, Chapter Two promises that his backstory will be further revealed, including his torture at the hands of Klingon L’Rell.

Even if certain continuity problems are never addressed, Discovery has made it an exciting time to be a Star Trek fan again.ย  Old Star Trek always had its problems with continuity, far too many to list.ย  If we can accept those, then let’s remain open minded.

Yes indeed, it is a great time to be a Trek fan.ย  In 1987, I remember fans thought The Next Generation was stiff, and we complained that it copied original Trek a bit too closely at times.ย  Everyone thought Jonathan Frakes looked like he was supposed to be Shatner.ย  Their pajama-like uniforms and Wil Wheaton made us all cringe, remember?ย  You hated Wesley too — don’t lie just because he’s on Big Bang Theory.

Sara Mitich as Airiam

Today, The Next Generation is revered by some as the best series of them all — or certainly the one with the best captain, right Patrick Stewart fans?ย  Things change, and we know we have two seasons for them to get things running right.ย  I’d like to see more of the background cyborg character, Lt. Commander Airiam (Sara Mitich).ย  We already know there are episodes coming directed by Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection).ย  And we expect that Lt. Stamets’ experiments with the spore drive has opened some kind of portal to the Star Trek “mirror universe”…where good is evil and evil is good.ย  Can you picture a bearded Stamets?ย  Lorca, perhaps.ย  Or would the mirror Lorca be the good one?

See?ย  It’s a great time to be a Trek fan.

This could just be the excitement talking, but I think Discovery is getting better and the best is still coming.

REVIEW: Iron Maiden – The Book of Souls: Live Chapter (2017)

IRON MAIDENย – The Book of Souls: Live Chapter (2017 Universal)

Not many bands can get away with releasing so many live albums so late in their career.ย  Iron Maiden can.ย  They can for three main reasons:

1: They still kick enormous amounts of ass.
2: Their setlist changes tour after tour and there will always be songs you won’t get to hear again.
3: See #1.

It doesn’t hurt that their new albums are as acclaimed as their old. Ever since Maiden’s 1999 reunion with Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith, we have been treated to an abnormally solid stream of brilliant records. Deal with the devil, perhaps? Faustian bargain #666?

The atmospheric and shadowy intro to “If Eternity Should Fail” is a perfect way to begin an Iron Maiden concert.ย  This track is magnificent.ย  It also serves as a dramatic way to open what is sure to be the greatest live experience on Earth. “Scream for me, Sydney!” yells Bruce to rile up the crowd. Yes, The Book of Souls: Live Chapter is taken from a number of different shows, which is a format Maiden have succeeded with before.

Another thing Maiden do successfully is top-load their live set with new songs.ย  The first two songs here are the same two as The Book of Souls itself.ย  Single “Speed of Light” really kicks up the excitement level.ย  To go from the epic drama of the opener to the taut single immediately causes an energy surge.ย  From there, we travel back to 1981 with “Wrathchild”.ย  It’s like a time machine to the London stages that young Maiden once trod upon.ย  Bruce’s scream is unholy.

Jump cut to Canada and “Children of the Damned”.ย  Bruce speaks French for the raving Montreal crowd, a nice touch of respect for the province of Quebec.ย  Maiden never sagged in popularity there.ย  In Quebec, Maiden’s 1995 album The X Factor (with lead singer Blaze Bayley) went Top 10.ย  Back to new material, “Death or Glory” is another energetic shorty.ย  ย The triple guitar solo slays.ย  ย Then it goes to epic, “The Red and the Black”, 13 minutes and the longest track on the album.ย  Riff overload!ย ย Unabated, we launch into “The Trooper” and “Powerslave”, both old classics that remain as amped up as they were in the 80s.ย  It is pure joy to listen.ย  (Only qualm: backing vocals on “Powerslave” sound like tape.)

A pair of top-notch new songs, “The Great Unknown” and “The Book of Souls” kick off the second CD.ย  These are not short tracks.ย  In a way this is the “meat” of the set.ย  It is a run of 17 combined minutes of epic Maiden, and it’s a lot to swallow.ย  Savour every bite; this is prime stuff.ย  And will they ever be played live again?ย  Who can say?

You know the show is drawing to a close when you hear the opening chords to “Fear of the Dark”.ย  This favourite has been in the set since 1992.ย  It’s the crowd’s chance to really sing along and be a part of it.ย  More favourites follow:ย  “Iron Maiden” and “The Number of the Beast”.ย  (Absent is “Run to the Hills” which is on plenty of other live Maiden albums of recent vintage.)ย  “Blood Brothers” from the reunion album Brave New Worldย seems oddly placed in the second-to-last slot.ย  The crowd at Download festival are thrilled to sing along.ย  On CD, you can hear Steve on backing vocals clearly, and appreciate how he and Bruce complement each other.ย  Then finally, it’s a terrific “Wasted Years” from underdog favourite Somewhere in Time.

The mix here is just dandy.ย  There are variances in sound from track to track and city to city, but these are minor and only natural.ย  You can clearly pick apart the instruments in the stereo field, and it’s pure delight to do so.ย  Once again, Iron Maiden have released a quality product.ย  You cannot go wrong by investing in any version of The Book of Souls: Live Chapter.

REVIEW: George Carlin – What Am I Doing in New Jersey? (1988)

GEORGE CARLIN – What Am I Doing in New Jersey? (1988 Atlantic)

Why do we still look to the wisdom of George Carlin today in memes and videos?ย  Because his comedy was timeless.ย  What worked in 1988 is still topical in 2017.ย  On the government, Carlin blasts: “They’re against street crime, unless the street is Wall Street!”ย  Still true, just change the names.ย  Listen and you might even learn something, but you’ll be too busy laughing to realise it.

It’s actually incredible how applicable this 30 year old comedy show is.ย  Freedom of choice, freedom of speech, government telling you what you can and can’t hear.ย  I don’t think George Carlin would think much of the year 2017.ย ย What is most appealing about George Carlin’s comedy is simply how he observes the absurdities of life.ย  If he makes you uncomfortable, that’s too bad, because the rest of us are laughing.

It’s not all topical observations.ย  Sometimes it’s helpful advice.ย  “Here’s one to try.ย  Go in to a gift shop, and ask for your gift.”ย  You’ll also enjoy his list of people he could do without.ย  “A proctologist with poor depth perception.”ย  ย True, true.ย  “Anyone who mentions Jesus more than 300 times in a two minute conversation.”ย  Yes, yes.ย  “A brain surgeon with ‘born to lose’ tattooed on his hands.”ย  Dear God yes.ย  And…”couples whose children’s names all start with the same initial.”ย  Say no more, my sides hurt!

The last 20 minutes of the album is dedicated to “More Stuff About Cars and Driving”.ย  From this, I gather there are many toll roads in the state of New Jersey.ย  Carlin goes after bumper stickers too.ย  Imagine what he’d think of today’s window sticker families!

Not for everybody, but possibly just what you need.

REVIEW: I Mother Earth – Scenery and Fish (1996)

I MOTHER EARTHย – Scenery and Fish (1996 EMI)

Some albums that mean everything to some, can mean nothing to others.ย  Take a look at Scenery and Fish.

I Mother Earth’s second album gets a slew of 4 and 5 star ratings on the Canadian Amazon.ย  Yet I don’t get it and never have.ย  I was on the I Mother Earth train very early, before their first album came out.ย  I loved the modern heaviness of the band.ย  With the tribal and funk influences seeping through, I Mother Earth put out a seriously impressive debut album:ย  a Canadian classic.ย  As any band should, they mixed it up a bit on the second album.

In early 1996 I received a promo CD for the first single from the second album, “One More Astronaut”, with the album version and a 4:35 edit.ย  It didn’t seem too different, maybe just a bit more concise than some of the first album’s longer jams.ย  This isn’t indicative of the album in general, which is a wild ride of different styles.

The exotic percussion (by Luis Conte and Daniel Mansilla) is still intact, melded with the funk bass, but the overall sound is very different.ย  Paul Northfield’s production is cleaner and slicker than Mike Clink’s on the first LP.ย  He still enables to band to exercise their instruments unfettered, but perhaps with a more radio friendly backing.

Although I’ve tried over and over again through the past two decades to let Scenery and Fish “click”, it just won’t.ย  Other fans certainly have their favourite tracks:ย  “Like a Girl”, “Raspberry”, “Used to be Alright”, “Another Sunday”.ย  These are indeed some of the best tracks on the album, yet I struggled to remember how they go.ย  “Another Sunday”, for example has an incredible blast of hooks for a chorus, but no memorable verses.ย  Maybe this album is too thick with musical ideas and passages for the average mortal.

But that’s just me.ย  You might think I’m nuts.ย  There are those who think I Mother Earth can do no wrong, but fans in general love Scenery and Fish, while I simply don’t get it.ย  I’ll always enjoy “One More Astronaut” and “Like a Girl”, which by the way features a friend of theirs named Alex from some band called Rush.

REVIEW: Blue Rodeo – 1000 Arms (2016)

BLUE RODEO – 1000 Arms (2016 Warner)

It’s hard keeping up with Blue Rodeo! They’re always working, either as a band or on their own projects. They’ve released new albums consistently without gaps. That’s 15 studio albums (one of them a double) spanning 30 years. Countless amazing songs…but mathematically their growth have kept me from growing with their new music as much as the old. There are only so many hours in a day, and days in a week, and it’s hard to imagine the day that 1000 Arms will surpass Five Days in July for number of spins.ย  It’s inevitable that when listening to newer Blue Rodeo music, it doesn’t feel as close to you as the early stuff.

Blue Rodeo maintain their knack for incredible songs and playing on 1000 Arms.ย  Greg Keelor conjures up the same old, not-quite-broken spirits as before.ย  “Nothing I ever do is good for you, will I ever realize?ย  You’re never satisfied.”ย  Biting lyrics, chiming mandolin and perfect Cuddy/Keelor harmonies combine to make the opener “Hard to Remember” a future classic.ย  Jim Cuddy takes the wheel next on an upbeat number called “I Can’t Hide My Feelings Anymore”.ย  When has Jim ever hid his feelings?ย  Not the point — another great tune.

The disc is loaded with great tunes.ย  “Jimmy Fall Down” (vocals: Keelor) maintains the bright, upbeat direction.ย  Things don’t slow down until track 4, “Long Hard Life”.ย  It’s quieter but no less enjoyable.ย  It’s only a temporary reprieve, as “Rabbit’s Foot” brings a classic guitar vibe.ย  The title track is old style Cuddy storytelling.ย  Greg’s penchant for slow and dramatic music is carried on by “Dust to Gold”.ย  There is even sly humour on “Superstar”, something you don’t always get with a Blue Rodeo album.ย  “Start a business, organics door to door, ’cause nobody buys records here anymore.”

We could go on and continue to describe this batch of new tunes, but rest assured there are no duds.ย  (Do stay tuned for a heavy exotic turn on closing track “The Flame”.)ย  I hope that, over time, these songs become as much a part of me as the old tunes.ย  There’s little difference in terms of quality, and the musicianship is always tops.ย ย Colin Cripps would be responsible for many of the tasteful guitar solos, but 1000 Arms is the last Blue Rodeo album to feature mandolin player (and Kitchener, Ontario resident) Bob Egan.ย  (That’s why he’s front and center of the band photo.)ย  Bob departed after making this one, and he went out in great style.

REVIEW: Max Webster – Live Magnetic Air (1979)

MAX WEBSTER –ย Live Magnetic Air (originally 1979, 2017 Anthem remaster)

So you’re the canker banker?ย  They’re just Max Webster, here to thin the thickness of your skin.

Any good 70s act worth their salt had to have a solid live album. Max released theirs after four studio albums, a good basis for a fulfilling concert set. The 10 songs (plus one reggae jam) only begin to scratch the surface of their bizarre and rocking history, but a good 10 songs they are.

Want some rockers? Tap into “America’s Veins”. 70s radio rock? Take a lift up into the “Paradise Skies”.ย  Looking for some progressive rock?ย  You’ll find it “In Context of the Moon”.ย  The adventurous and quirky arrangements of some tunes are a direct contrast to the catchiness of others.ย  “Gravity” blends quirky and catchy into one successful gestalt.ย  “Charmonium” both challenges and pleases the ears at once.ย  Whether you’re soaring on “Night Flights” or biting into “Lip Service”, there is no filler on Live Magnetic Air.

One expects great playing on any Max Webster platter. Live Magnetic Air has plenty of that gonzo Kim Mitchell guitar work that he is known for.ย  Terry Watkinson’s keys explore different tones within single songs, never getting boring.ย  Yet it’s Gary McCracken’s drum work that seems to really shine, especially on the 2017 remaster from The Party boxed set.

It is difficult to throw too much praise at Max Webster, because surely they deserve it.ย  They were not as famous as Rush and not as worshipped as Zappa.ย  But those are the kind of names thrown about when speaking of Max Webster.ย  Each Max album is loaded with amazing material, but if you were looking to start with something, why not make it Live Magnetic Air?ย  The party atmosphere and ace selection of songs are the basic ingredients of a classic live album.ย  Now that it’s finally been properly mastered for CD, you can hear it the way you were always meant to.ย  For those who just wanna rock, the guitars have the crunch.ย  The discerning fan will enjoy the new clarity and depth that this remaster offers, without overdriving the levels.

Once again we wholeheartedly recommend The Party boxed set, but if you find Live Magnetic Air on vinyl, pick it up and hear what some genuine “Sarniatown Reggae” sounds like.

Motley Crue – Greate$t Hit$ (1998, 2009 versions)

MOTLEY CRUE –ย Greate$t Hit$ย (1998 Motley/BMG),ย Greate$t Hit$ย (2009 Motley/Masters)

Most fans will agree that Motley Crue’s 1997 reunion album Generation Swine was, at best, disappointing.ย  The Crue tried to right the ship by returning to producer Bob Rock.ย  Together they came up with two new songs, “Bitter Pill” and “Enslaved” that recalled better days.ย  We discussed the wherefores and origins of 1998’s Greate$t Hit$ album in Getting More Tale #611:ย  Afraid, on which the two new songs were released.ย  As you’ll read here, the 1998 issue ofย ย Greate$t Hit$ย is better than its 2009 update.

Both “Bitter Pill” and “Enslaved” bring Motley’s sonics back to their previous setpoint with Vince Neil, Decade of Decadence.ย  The combo of Motley plus Bob Rock produces the kind of results you expect:ย  punchy, heavy rock tunes with hooks.ย  Neither is as memorable as “Primal Scream”, but serve their function.ย  If this lineup had stayed together perhaps they could have taken it further, to the next stage of evolution.ย  Tensions between Vince and Tommy Lee eventually erupted.ย  Tommy left the band to pursue his own sanity and a side project called Methods of Mayhem.

The ’98ย Greate$t Hit$ also offered up one other cool bonus:ย  a previously unreleased remix of “Glitter”.ย  It’s softer and more electronically processed, but a very cool alternate version.ย  Dropped into this running order,ย Greate$t Hit$ย turns out to be a remarkably fun and consistent listen.ย  It would be a highly recommended way to get a broad assortment of great Motley and some rarities too.

Then, as part of the promotional cycle for a later, better reunion album (2008’s Saints of Los Angeles),ย Greate$t Hit$ was updated and reissued.ย  Including its previous incarnation, the 2009ย Greate$t Hit$ became theย fifth Motley Crue best-of compilation (not counting box sets and rarities compilations).

So what’s the difference?

13 tracks overlap between the two: “Too Fast For Love”, “Looks That Kill”, “Smokin’ In The Boys Room”, “Home Sweet Home”, “Wild Side”, “Girls, Girls, Girls”, “Dr. Feelgood”, “Kickstart My Heart”, “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)”, “Without You”, “Primal Scream”, and “Afraid”. The 13th track is “Shout At The Devil”.ย  In 2009 they used the original version, where on the old CD it was “Shout At The Devil ’97” (a re-recording from Generation Swine).

Three tracks were previously released as “new” songs on other greatest hits CDs: “Primal Scream” (Decade of Decadence), “Sick Love Song” and “If I Die Tomorrow” (Red, White & Crue).

Two tracks were from the newest Motley platter, Saints Of Los Angeles: The title track, and a brand-new remix of “The Animal In Me” featuring more keyboards.

Zero tracks from the albums Motley Crue or New Tattoo are included (neither album had all four original members).

There are 19 songs total included, which is a beef-up from the 1998 version, which had 17 songs.ย  “Bitter Pill” and “Enslaved” were excluded, but both are available on Red, White & Crueย (2005). The remix of “Glitter” from the 1998 version is not and is now deleted.

The songs on the update, unlike the 1998 version, are mostly in chronological order. The exception is “Afraid” which is shuffled out of place with “Sick Love Song” for reasons unknown. The flow of the album is OK, with the kickass “Too Fast For Love” starting the proceedings. The mixture of rockers to ballads is engineered for high octane, and the ballads only kick in when needed. The album only runs out of gas towards the end:ย  “Sick Love Song” isn’t very good didn’t require a second look here.ย  “Bitter Pill” should have been kept instead.ย  The final track “The Animal In Me” is just too slow for a closing song. “Saints Of Los Angeles” would have been more appropriate to close this set.

Even though the 2009 update has 19 songs compared to 17, the ’98 version wins due to the inclusion of “Bitter Pill” and “Enslaved”. It’s more enjoyable listen from start to finish, with better flow and song order.ย  The ’09 Greate$t Hit$ย smacks of an obvious cash grab. Check out the liner notes. They haven’t even been updated. The essays are 10 years out of date, the notes refer to the “two new songs” (which aren’t there), and the back cover artwork still reflects “Bitter Pill”. Essentially, the only changes to the packaging are the colours with a new slipcase added, displaying a newer band photo from the Saints sessions.

RE-REVIEW: KISS – โ€œGod Gave Rock & Roll to You IIโ€ (1991 single)

Theย KISS RE-REVIEW SERIESย Part 40:

ย โ€“ย โ€œGod Gave Rock & Roll to You IIโ€ย (1991 Interscope single)

Kiss’ Hot in the Shade tour wasn’t a sellout, but it was well received by fans who appreciated that a bunch of older songs were back in the set.ย  The tour was unfortunately highlighted by the June 15, 1990 date in Toronto, igniting a feud with Whitesnake.ย  Kiss were third on a four-band bill, with David Coverdale, Steve Vai and company in the headlining slot.ย  Paul Stanley used his stage raps to complain that Whitesnake wouldn’t let them use their full setup, including a giant sphinx.ย  When Whitesnake hit the stage, it was to a chorus of boos.ย  Steve Vai later stated that it was the first time he had ever been booed.ย  Vai once even walked onstage to the sound of people chanting “Yngwie! Yngwie! Yngwie!”, but he had never been booed until the incident with Kiss in Toronto.

When the tour wrapped up in November, Kiss took a few months off before gearing up again in the new year.ย  It was to be another album, another tour, but suddenly real life interfered.

Eric Carr hadn’t been feeling well.ย  Flu-like symptoms turned out to be heart cancer.ย  Simultaneously, Kiss received an offer to record a song for the sequel to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.ย  Carr underwent surgery in April, with chemotherapy following.ย  Having little choice, Kiss recorded without him.ย  Eric Singer, who had performed so well on Paul Stanley’s solo tour, filled in on drums.ย  Eric Carr, in a wig, was able to play for the music video taping.ย  He gave his all, and did a full day’s shoot, with excellent (pun intended) results.

Unfortunately a rift was developing, with Eric Carr feeling shunned and excluded from Kiss.ย  He was afraid he was going to be replaced, permanently, and his relationship with the band was strained.ย  Although everybody hoped Eric would make a full recovery, he passed away from a brain haemorrhage on November 24, 1991.ย  Eric Carr was 41.

On the same date, Freddie Mercury of Queen succumbed to AIDS.ย  Carr’s death was barely mentioned in the news, including Rolling Stone magazine who missed it completely, prompting a harsh reply from Kiss:

If anything positive came from Eric Carr’s death, it was that Kiss were going to put all that anger and frustration back into the music.ย  The music was to be their Revenge.

It started with “God Gave Rock & Roll to You II”, a re-imagining of an old Argent song for the Bill & Ted movie.ย  Eric Carr may not have been well enough to play drums, but that didn’t stop him from singing.ย  His vocals onย “God Gave Rock & Roll to You II” were his last.ย  The song wouldn’t be the same without Carr, as he can be heard sweetly harmonising with Paul Stanley.ย  ย Eric Singer wasn’t credited on the single, or the final soundtrack for Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.ย  It simply says “performed by Kiss”.

“God Gave Rock & Roll to You II” was important for two more reasons.ย  First, and very significantly, it was produced by Bob Ezrin.ย  Ezrin was responsible for the two albums that some consider Kiss’ best, and Kiss’ worst.ย  It had been 10 years.ย  A Kiss-Ezrin reunion was very big news for fans.ย  It indicated that Kiss meant business this time.ย  Secondly, “God Gave Rock & Roll to You II” was the first Paul Stanley/Gene Simmons (with Bob Ezrin and Russ Ballard) co-writing credit since 1985, and their first shared vocals in ages upon ages.

Although it didn’t make waves in 1991, “God Gave Rock & Roll to You II” has become enough of a favourite to make it onto 2015’s Kiss 40 compilation, and continue to be played live.ย  It shows off what Kiss can really do.ย  Yes, they can sing!ย  Yes, they can play!ย  ย This lineup could do it particularly well.ย  It’s appropriate that Eric Carr went out on a good Kiss track.ย  And Eric Singer was the right guy to continue.

There are three released versions of “God Gave Rock & Roll to You II”:ย  The single edit (3:57), the soundtrack version (5:23) and the final 1992 version that was later released on the next Kiss album (5:19).ย  The single edit cuts out too much of the grand, pompous arrangement, including the epic opening.

In an ironic twist, the version of “God Gave Rock & Roll to You II” that is in the movie has a guitar intro solo by Steve Vai.ย  The same guy whose band got booed in Toronto thanks to Kiss.

The CD single is rounded out by two more songs from the Bill & Ted soundtrack, by Slaughter and King’s X.ย  The King’s X track, “Junior’s Gone Wild” (previously reviewed in our mega King’s X series) has never been one of their better tunes, but as a non-album rarity, a nice one to have.ย  Just don’t judge King’s X by this one track.ย  Slaughter turned in something better, a fun party tune called “Shout It Out”, also a non-album recording.ย  Slaughter, of course, were one of Kiss’ well-received opening acts on the Hot in the Shadeย tour.ย  And what was their Kiss connection?ย  Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum were in a band with Kiss’ old guitar player, called the Vinnie Vincent Invasion!

As work proceeded on the next LP, the world suddenly changed.ย  Hard rock was out, and grunge took over MTV.ย ย This single bought Kiss a little bit of time, but it was going to be the longest gap between Kiss albums yet — three years.ย  Revenge had to wait a little longer.

REVIEW: The Darkness – Pinewood Smile (2017 Japanese 15 track edition)

THE DARKNESS – Pinewood Smile (2017 Canary Dwarf Japanese printing)

Please welcome Rufus Tiger Taylor to the drum kit!ย  Son of Roger Taylor (the guy from The Darkness’ biggest influence, Queen), I think we can assume this kid knows his way around a drum set.ย  It’s the third drummer in three albums for The Darkness.ย  Original member Eddie Graham was on board for Hot Cakesย (2013), but he was replaced by Emily Dolan Davies for Last of Our Kindย (2015).

The Darkness are The Darkness are The Darkness — don’t expect them to ditch the operatic vocals or bombastic arrangements.ย  Pinewood Smile is more of what fans love, perhaps turned up just a little bit louder than before.ย  Indeed, the second track “Buccaneers of Hispaniola” sounds like The Darkness have been listening to a lot of Queen IIย on maximum volume.ย  “Japanese Prisoner of Love” has similar epic Queen inspirations, but melded to a momentous thrash metal riff.

Their penchant for humour remains unabated.ย  “And we’re never gonna stop shitting out solid gold!” sings Justin Hawkins on one radio-ready rock tune.ย  “Southern Trains” features the truism “There are fucking assholes everywhere.”ย  We must assume the trains in the south of England are shite:ย  “Fuck you, southern trains, we’re not getting anywhere!”

Of course, what would a Darkness album be without a few ballads?ย  It can’t be all heaviness and gloom.ย  “Why Don’t the Beautiful Cry?” is a quite lovely acoustic Darkness ballad.ย  Bright and sunny “Happiness” is the gleeful mood of early Darkness returned.ย  There are a number of exceptional diverse tracks as well, that defy categorisation.ย  “I Wish I Was in Heaven” and “Lay Down With Me Barbara” stretch out, incorporating different elements both hard and soft, but always catchy as the plague.ย  The standard album closer “Stampede of Love” is a folksy “Blackbird”-ish duet with Justin and Dan Hawkins…but stay tuned for a manic unlisted coda!

On to the bonus tracks — four on the deluxe edition, five on the Japanese.ย  These are a little stranger than the standard album tracks.ย  What is a “Uniball”?ย  Ummm…it’s when you have to have one testicle surgically removed.ย  Yes, The Darkness wrote a heavy metal song about it.ย  B-side worthy “Rack of Glam” is a decent pun with a punchy chorus.ย  “Seagulls” is quite exceptional, highlighted by mandolins and a slight celtic flavour.ย  Maybe the subtitle “Losing My Virginity” is why it ended up as a bonus track.ย  Also brilliant is “Rock in Space”, the most pompous and bombastic track of the group.

The Japanese exclusive track is a demo ofย “Why Don’t the Beautiful Cry?”, which is a real treat.ย  Stripped back to just the basic acoustic arrangement, you can really just listen to Justin and Dan harmonising.ย  No drums, no bass.ย  Even though it’s just a demo, you can choose which version ofย “Why Don’t the Beautiful Cry?” is your favourite, because both have merits.

What Pinewood Smile lacks, compared to previous Darkness albums, is an immediately loveable pop rock standout track.ย  Something like “She Just a Girl, Eddie” or “Last of Our Kind”.ย  Pinewood Smile doesn’t have those kinds of songs, but hopefully this means we’ll still be listening to it a year or two later.
