#460: Appetite for Reunions

GETTING MORE TALEΒ #460: Appetite for Reunions

Unless you have been living under a pile of rock (and roll), then you know that the hype machine for a 2016 Guns N’ Roses β€œreunion” has already begun.

But this is not a reunion.Β  This is not Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy, and Steven.Β  Matt Sorum is not involved, nor is Gilby Clarke.Β  The new lineup is supposed to consist of: Β W.Β Axl Rose, Slash, Duff β€œRose” McKagan, Richard Fortus, Frank Ferrer, Dizzy Reed, and Chris Pittman, with new member Dave Kushner (Velvet Revolver) in the third guitar slot.

Of course, many lineups labelled as β€œreunions” in the past were not.Β  Van Halen’s current β€œreunited” lineup consists of three classic members and one new guy, Wolfgang Van Halen.Β  Any time The Who go out there for a tour, there are only two original members.Β  Not much can be done about that, with Keith and John both gone. Β Not that it matters since both bands have made millions on these tours, and both bands even managed to put out new albums, without the full original lineups. Β New music always trumps a tour.

Few bands seem to reunite with all the beloved members intact, either due to death or stubbornness.Β  There are exceptions, obviously.Β  The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac came together with their most beloved lineups, and a tremendous amount of success, but even they couldn’t make it last.Β  Don Felder was fired from the Eagles years ago.Β  Christine McVie only recently returned to the Mac after being gone for ages, and meanwhile the band did a new album without her.Β Β  And Black Sabbath?Β  Their farewell tour only has ΒΎ of the original lineup! Β Meanwhile Bill Ward sits at home, having alienated the band and Sharon Osbourne. Β The chances of Ward ever playing drums again in the band he co-founded are slim to none. Β One does not piss off the Osbourne camp without consequences. Β Regardless of his reasons, justified or not, a Black Sabbath farewell tour without its still capable original drummer is a hollow thing indeed.

Even when you do get the full original lineup of a band that you wanted, that doesn’t necessarily mean the band is returning to full functionality.Β  When Kiss reunited in 1996 with the full original band, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss were hired hands.Β  They didn’t get a say, they didn’t get a vote.Β  They got a contract stating their responsibilities and compensation.Β  As if Paul and Gene would ever give up any control in their band, now! Β So what we saw live was Kiss, but what we got behind the scenes and on the album Psycho-Circus was just β€œmore of the same”. Β Ace and Peter didn’t even appear on many of the songs, even though they were on the album cover. Β But that’s nothing new for Kiss!

What band has had the most successful reunion? Β I’m not talking in terms of numbers; then we would probably have to include Spice Girls and New Kids on the Block. Β Who has had the most success in terms of quality? Β That would have to be Iron Maiden.

Steve Harris did something very creative when he reunited with Bruce Dickinson. Β Instead of just bringing Bruce back into the band, he also brought in Bruce’s guitarist and former Maiden member Adrian Smith. Β But Adrian was not cool with coming in to replace somebody else. Β “What about Janick Gers?” he asked. Β Janick had been in Maiden for a successful decade, and Adrian didn’t want him out of a job. Β Steve always envisioned a three-guitar Iron Maiden, and Adrian Smith coming back gave him that opportunity. Β It worked out brilliantly, especially live, when it could have been a train wreck. Β Technically,Β what Iron Maiden did is the same thing Guns N’ Roses are said to be doing: Β a new version of the band, with bothΒ classic and current members. Β Maiden made it last, too. Β Harris was very clear with Bruce: Β nobody was coming back to Maiden just to hang around a while and leave again. Β Anybody coming back to Maiden was coming back for life, and that is exactly what happened. Β Five more studio albums later, Maiden rule absolutely.

What will happen with Guns N’ Roses? Β That is harder to predict. Β It is unlikely their most talented member, Izzy Stradlin, would want to return to the circus of insanity that is a GN’R tour. Β As for Slash, he has always preferred a stripped down band. Β It’s hard to imagine how he will be happy playing in a band with two keyboardists, but that’s what they say is happening. Β How long will it last? Β A few shows? Β Coachella and gone? Β Much like Ace Frehley, Slash will probably be aΒ contracted musician.

A band of Guns’ stature all but had to reunite. Β The fans have been loudly demanding something like this for over a decade. Β The fans hoped Izzy and Steven Adler or Matt Sorum would be a part of it, but that has always seemed unlikely. Β Slash couldn’t even get Izzy into Velvet Revolver. Β What they are doing is probably the closest to a reunion that is likely. Β Perhaps Izzy will show up to guest as he has in the past, but fans shouldn’t get their hopes up of seeing Adler on stage.

Perhaps this, the most anticipated “reunion” since Led Zeppelin (also a new lineup with Jason Bonham), will stop the constant questions from the media and fans. Β “Will you ever get back together?” Β It must be tiring answering that question daily, when you have new music out there to play. Β Sometimes a band just has to give in and take a step backwards. Β Sometimes, as in the case of Iron Maiden, the way forward is to go backwards.

Will it work? Β The only way to find out is to stay tuned. Β You know where you are? Β You in the jungle, baby.

Let’s see if the bad boys of rock and roll can still survive the jungle.

REVIEW: Deep Purple – Long Beach 1971 (2015)

DEEP PURPLE – Long Beach 1971 (2015 Edel)

This CD is over 70 minutes long. Β It has four tracks. Β The shortest one is 11:05. Β The longest is 27:18. Β We just needed to be upfront with you, about what you are about to read, in case you felt like turning back now. Β This would be the time to do so.

Still with us? Β Great!

This live album was recorded during a period in Deep Purple where their setlist was in a state of flux. Β Their first heavy rock album and first serious bonafide smash hit, Deep Purple In Rock, was still dominating the set. Β The mid-term single, “Strange King of Woman”, had been included on the new album Fireball in the US, but it’s the only new song here. Β Even though the showΒ was well recorded for radio, this set has never been released before officially.

A energetically ragged “Speed King” opens affairs. Β “A Speed King is somebody who moves very quickly from one place to another, and always gets there first,” says Ian Gillan during the long middle solo section. Β When it’s Blackmore’s turn to play, he’s smooth with just enough rough edges. Β Everybody shines; live in 1971, Deep Purple were a well-oiled machine running on the fuel of pure creativity. Β Ian and the others liked to have a drink now and then, but they were never a drug band until other members joined and brought their troubles with them. Β When a band as talented and unfettered and uninhibited by chemicals hit the stage, this is what can happen. Β “Speed King” is a mind-breakingly enjoyable version, both in spite of and because of its length!

The new single goes down a storm, and Blackmore’s solo is inspired. Β Then “Child in Time”, the old standby since late ’69, begins delicately with Ian in prime voice. Β Deep Purple at full power doing “Child in Time” complete with screams? Β Jazzy shuffle right in the middle? Β Always nice to have. Β The last half-hour of the set is dedicated to “Mandrake Root”, an unremarkable song from the first LP that operated in concert as the forum for their “big” jam, the one that descends into madness and chaos by the end. Β Brilliant stuff, but a bit much for those who just wanna rock.

If four songs loaded with solos are not your cup of java, that’s fine. Β There are plenty more Deep Purple live albums to be had. Β In the 80’s, the soloing was de-emphasized in favour of playing more songs. Β Those albums, featuring the exact same lineup, may be more your speed if this doesn’t sound like your kinda deal.

Blu-ray REVIEW: Ted 2 (2015)

TED 2 (2015 Universal)

Directed by Seth McFarlane

What happens when you let a bunch of now-grown Star Trek nerds from the 80’s make a movie? Apparently, they make Ted. Β If you let ’em do it twice, you get Ted 2.

I really don’t know how this works, but Ted 2 provides ample proof of its own Trek-nerdiness. Β Forget the fact that the climax takes place at New York Comic-Con. Β Do you realize how many Trek actors appear in Ted 2?

  • Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard), as he was in the first Ted, is the narrator. Β (Don’t forget he is also currently CIA Deputy Director Bulloch on Seth McFarlane’s American Dad!Β )
  • Nana Visitor, better known as Major Kira Nerys on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is anΒ underrated performer with a good role here. Β She still looks amazing.
  • LeVar Burton (Geordie LaForge) appears in a brief clip from RootsΒ as Kunta Kinte, but I’m still counting it.
  • Pushing it here, but Ron Canada (from Canada!), who plays the judge in Ted 2,Β did guest shots on three different Star Trek series.
  • Best of all is Michael Dorn (Lt. Worf) as Rick; gay lover to Patrick Warburton’s Guy. Β Took me a while to pick up on the fact that it was Michael Dorn. Β Only when he showed up in uniformΒ at Comic-Con did it sink in!
Dorn and Warburton as...well, you know who.

Dorn and Warburton as…well, you know who.

So: McFarlane likes Star Trek. Β That’s obvious. Β He likes a lot of stuff, and Ted 2 is less a story than a running series of references to other movies. Β From Jurassic Park to the cheesy ending to Contact, these characters walk and talk quoting movies all the friggin’ time. Β It’s all they do! Β One thing you will see and hear less of going forward: Β Star Wars in any McFarlane production. Β According to the audio commentary, the friendly relationship that Seth used to have with Lucasfilm has vanished since they were sold, and Disney have made it pretty clear that further collaborations will not be happening. Β So you can kiss the idea of a Family Guy: The Force Awakens goodbye.

Unfortunately, characters that quote stuff is as deep as it gets. Β Mark Wahlberg’s Johnny has divorced Mila Kunis, because she was trying to change him too much. Β Well, yeah…that was the whole plot of Ted 1. Β Wahlberg wanted to grow up and marry Mila. Β Now he decides that’s actually not what he wanted, after fighting for it so hard in the first movie. Β In Ted 2, we see Marky Mark hanging around with Ted a lot, and we see him getting into plenty of hijacks, but Mark Wahlberg is little more than a non-character sidekick in this one. Β Ted is Ted; a foul-mouthed Peter Griffin who gets away with it by being a teddy bear. Β Newcomer Amanda Seyfried steals the movie with her likeable lawyer character, Sam L. Jackson. Β And yes, she has not heard of the actor Samuel L. Jackson, nor does she pick up on any of Ted and Johnny’s movie quotes, and that’s the driving force of the trio’s interactions. Β Seyfried is a wonderfully talented actress with a very expressive face, and she easily outclasses everyone she’s in a scene with (except obviously Morgan Freeman). Β To her credit she’s a good sport about her famous large blue eyes. Β They are the butt of a few jokes in the movie — the best ones actually. Β Seyfried is obviously a good shit and I bet she’s fun to have a beer with. Β She also gets to sing, and that award-winning voice performs the original theme song “Mean Ol’ Moon”.

The plot, such as it is, was inspired by the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Measure of a Man”; I shit you not. Β This is even acknowledged by McFarlane in the commentary. Β Ted and Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth) have been married a while but it’s not working out. Β So, they do what every struggling couple in America does to heal their relationship: Β have a kid. Β At first, you think the movie will be about Ted and Marky Mark getting into hijinks and capers, trying to steal donor sperm from demigods like Tom Brady. Β  Then it awkwardly shifts to a legal slant, with Ted having to prove he is a person and not property in a court, just like Lt. Data did in Star Trek. Β Data had Captain PicardΒ to defendΒ him, and McFarlane says that Amanda Seyfriend’s opening comments in the courtroom sceneΒ were inspired by Picard’s.

In Star Trek, if Data were declared to be property, then Starfleet could have cut him open to mass produceΒ intelligent androids to serve as a working class. Β In Ted 2, Giovanni Ribisi’s evil Donny wants to do something similar. Β He convinces Hasbro that they can take Ted, and cut him open to see what makes him tick, and repeat the magic. Β Billions of dollars would be made. Β All this hinges on him being declared property in court. Β There would be few repercussions for Hasbro to steal a teddy bear, compared to a person, toΒ dissect it!

You have to give McFarlane credit for a greatΒ Mel Brooks-inspired opening musical number, and a brawl finale. Β You have to admire Amanda Seyfried’s abilities, and Pantene Pro V-perfect hair. Β Otherwise Ted 2 is a lazy retread. Β I don’t mean “lazy” in the sense that it wasn’t hard work. Β It clearly was hard work making this movie, doing the perfect CG bear and motion capture. Β The reason we don’t talk about the bear much is that he seems perfectly real at all times. Β No, I mean “lazy” in the writing. Β There are plenty of funny jokes, situations, and lines. Β There are no characters we care or even know much about. Β How did Seyfried’s Sam, age 26, become a lawyer who can play guitar and sing better than 95% of the ladies currently in the top 40, all while suffering debilitating migraines that require her to constantly smoke marijuana? Β How??? Β It’s hard to get involved in the characters when they’re so obviously not human, and I’m not referring to Ted! Β How does Marky Mark support himself? Β Does he still have a job? Β We never see him at work.

Best gag: Β A Liam Neeson cameo. Β Stay tuned for the post credit scene.

Special features: Β Unrated version of the movie, audio commentary, gag real, deleted scenes (mostly alternate lines from scenes in the movie), and plenty of making-of featurettes. Β The “Creating Comic-Con” feature was interesting, from a Trek nerd point of view. Β Check out how they made that giant starship Enterprise that hangs from the ceiling. Β It’s just based on a model that McFarlane had on his desk!

Blu-ray annoyance: Β These text info-boxes advertising other movies pop up on every menu, unless you specifically look for the setting that turns them off. Β That’s…mildly vexatious.

Stupid infobox.

Stupid infobox.

Joke tagline: Ted 2Β –Β more of the same, but now with Seyfried! Β Whose last name I can now pronounce correctly, thanks to the commentary.

2015 Year-End Lists, part 5 – site stats!

In the annual tradition, let us have a look at the mikeladano.com site stat highlights for 2015!

I was really hoping that one of those legendary Joey Tempest Conspiracy (β„’)Β posts would have made the Top 5 posts of the year by hits. Sadly, none did — but one did make it to #6! Β So close!

Even though they did not come in with the #1 spot, 2015 was clearly the year of Van Halen.

2015 kiss

In 2015, there were 370 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 1,707 posts! Β Despite my pledge to slow down, that’s still a post a day on average.

TheΒ most commented-on post in 2015 was GUEST REVIEW: Europe – War of Kings (2015) by Jesse A. Jones, with 162 comments from a, err, variety of interesting and possibly unstable personalities!

TopΒ 5 most active commenters of 2015

A big thanks to everybody who dropped even just one comment here! Β Especially Joey Tempest…I think. Β But seriously, thank you. Β Thank you. Β Thank you. Β I don’t always have time to respond to every comment but I appreciate them all!

Top 5 personal highlights of 2015

  • It is always a pleasure to be asked to be a guest on the radio. Β I love doing radio and this year my highlight was appearing twice with Rob Daniels on his program Visions in Sound, talking about Star Wars music. Β I’m happy to announce thatΒ I’m booked to do it again this month for Rob’s anniversary show.
  • 23Β of the biggest music fans on the webΒ participated in the Top 15 on the 15th, a collection of top 15 music lists from around the world. Β What a fun experiment that was! Β (Thanks to Geoff Stephen & Aaron for coming up with it!)
  • A Holy Grail item was acquired at a reasonable price. Β I have not discussed this publicly yet (two people know what it is), but there will be a review in 2016!
  • Sausagefest 2015 was another successful raging boner of rock.
  • Every year, you can count on the Mike and Aaron go to Toronto expeditions. Β This year was probably my most fun yet. Β I say that every year! Β But I think it’s true.

Final words

I predict that 2016 will be a simply destructive year! Β #gnr2016

#459.3: 2015 Year-End Lists, part 3 – LeBrain!

GETTING MORE TALE #459.3:
2015 Year-End Lists, part 3 – yours truly, LeBrain!

Unlike my companions in rock, Tom and Uncle Meat, I’m going to be a bit more verbose here with my top lists of 2015.

I thought I had my top five albums down. Β I didn’t expect any changes, but then a couple respected writers started praising the new Def Leppard album. Β I decided, against my better judgement to go ahead and buy it. Β What can I say? Β Those reviewers were right. Β It’s a good album. Β Def Leppard 2015 cracked my top five list, necessitating a top six.

LeBRAIN’SΒ TOP SIX(!)Β ALBUMS of 2015

6. Def Leppard – Def Leppard
5. Stealth – …listen
4. Queensryche – Condition HΓΌman
3. The Darkness – Last of Our Kind

2. Better Call Saul
1. American Dad!

BIG BANG

LeBRAIN’SΒ TOP MOVIESΒ of 2015

As far as I know, only one movie came out this year, right?

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

FORCE

2015 IN SUM

The high quality of new albums by returning bands continues to amaze me. Β The last band I expected a quality album from this year was Def Leppard. Β Of course, on the flip side of that, we have Bon Jovi who choked to death on pop dreck. Β Given what was coming out this year, and what the stakes were (a possible final album from Iron Maiden, the first Faith No More CD in 18 years), you couldn’t have realistically hoped for better than we got. Β Meanwhile on the new music front, it is hard to find a better debut than …listen, by Stealth. Β Not rock in any way, but more mind-expanding than anything else I heard in 2015.

And talk about high stakes on the movie front! Β The most anticipated movie of all time is going to be the most successful movie of all time, thanks to it pushing all the right buttons while moving the story into its next phase. Β Because of my wife’s health condition (epilepsy) I don’t go out to movies very often, preferring to wait for the blu-ray. Β Age of Ultron and Ant-Man pleased me immensely. Β But worth more than just an honourable mention is Mad Mad: Fury Road. Β Unlike Star Wars, Mad Max rebooted while going off into a startling new direction. Β It was probably the most impressive film of the year…but even so, my 2015 was only about Star Wars. Β Just trust me — see Mad Max: Fury Road. Β See it many times.

Finally: Β Rest in peace Lemmy Kilmister, Philthy Animal Taylor (that’s 2/3rds of the classic Motorhead lineup, wiped out), Scott Weiland, Chris Squire, Ornette Coleman, Ben E. King, Percy Sledge, A.J. Pero, Andy Fraser, and of course, B.B. King.

Happy New Year, everybody!

#458: The LeBrain 2015 Christmas Extraganza! – full report

GETTING MORE TALEΒ #458: The LeBrain 2015 Christmas Extraganza! – full report

Scraps of turkey remain, wrapped in tinfoil, awaiting soup or sandwiches to be made. Β The cranberry sauce, if not used up, has been thrown out along with a mountain of cardboard and paper packaging. Β Bank balances are lower, but hearts are fuller. Β Christmas has come and gone.

Here we sit on the Monday after, hopefully still on vacation, to enjoy the spoils.

The first thing I need to address personally is this: Β Happy birthday to my sister Kathryn! Β Kathryn requested a birthday review this year, but unfortunately I just have not had the time to do it. Β I will review her request sometime in early 2016!

The first Christmas gift that I opened came in the mail from Aaron who sneakily did this even though he certainly didn’t have to! Β And I know he has sent Christmas gifts to other folks in the community. Β What a generous lad! Β I know he loves to hear about how we react to his surprises, so I had Mrs. LeBrain record mine. Β This was done on the evening of the 22nd. Thanks Aaron!

You can’t have too many Kiss shirts! Β And that Flying Colors blu-ray is going to be amazing. Β In fact I’m already arranging a group screening for review purposes!

On the 23rd, we had a half day at work, and a huge Christmas feast for lunch. This was catered in by a company called Platters that we’d never tried before. It was easily the best catered meal we have had in my eight Christmases at the company. Lots of laughs and handshakes, and then by 1:00, most people had taken off for the Christmas break. For some of us though, a long day was still ahead! We had taken on a job that was new to us only a week before. The job had to be completed and shipped on the 23rd, so we had a skeleton crew left, working hard to get this accomplished. I was responsible for coordinating the customs paperwork, and so I was among the stragglers. Around 5:00, the job was finally completed and I crawled home exhausted to begin my holiday. It sure felt amazing to walk in that door!

Mail had arrived, and in the box was Marillion’s latest fan club-only Christmas CD! Β Free gifts given only to fan club members, I collect these things which are true rarities. I’m only missing the first two (1998 and 1999). This year is a double live called A Monstrously Festive(al) Christmas.

On December 24th, Christmas Eve, it was so warm outside that I was wearing shorts. In all my years I have never seen a Christmas without any snow. This was the first. We’ve had blizzards and mild weather but nothing like this!

Christmas in shorts

Christmas in shorts

Over the course of the next 24 hours, there were some pretty damn cool gifts given and received. Β Here are the musical highlights. Β All are still sealed, so as to savour every delightful moment. Β As usual, I have some intensive listening to do in the weeks and months to come. Β Do you see something here you’d like reviewed?

It’s a very Purple Christmas this year! Β Hard Road is a 5 disc box set containing the first three Purple albums with bonus tracks, and also the rare original mono mixes, which I have never heard before. Β This renders even the best remastered versions of the early Purple CDs obsolete. Β I need someone to gift them to! Β As for the Rainbow, and Wacken sets…this is a lot of hours of music. Β Include that Flying Colors double live as part of my Purple Christmas!

The live rock continues:

Two new releases and one classic. Β Many more hours of incredible musicianship to be had right here. Β But what’s Christmas without some kind of crazy deluxe edition boxed set?

I originally acquired Too Old to Rock ‘N’ Roll in 2012, so I don’t know it very intimately. Β I do like it though, so why not go for the whole hog? Β This box set contains: the original album, the previous bonus tracks withΒ a bunch more on top, the original quadrophonic mix transferred to DVD for the 4.0 quad experience, a TV special, bonus video features such as a tribute to the late bassist John Glascock, and lots more. Β Go big or go home!

Then we have this massive Led Zeppelin book set, The Ultimate Collection by Chris Welch, including a DVD and an enormous amount of reproduction memorabilia:

Sheer overload! Β When am I going to have time to go through all this? Β I only have a week off!

Fortunately, I have already enjoyed these two movies, Ted 2 and Ant-Man. Β Great way to enjoy Boxing Day.

New Transformers and nerd-stuffs also arrived chez LeBrain. Β My mom even bought me a selfie stick Nerd Stick. Β Look at the aerial photo I took of her Christmas village! Β In fact, the only snow in town could be found in her Christmas village.

Nerd stuffs:

Finally, I needed a new coffee mug. Β I need a cup that can comfortably hold 12 oz. Β Mrs. LeBrain’s Mom delivered, with my brand new Vader mug. Β Dark side or not, that’s just a light roast inside him. Β This is actually quite a nice mug, with silver paint applications on Vader’s mask. Β It’s odd to see the Disney logo on anything I own, but there it was on the box. Β I believe that Lord Vader will be accompanying me as I journey through the light and dark sides of live music sets!

I hope everyone had a merry, merry Christmas. Β Next up: Β the new year. Β And you know what that means! Β Year end lists! Β Next time on Getting More Tale.
