The Adventures of Tee Bone Man: Tee Bone Man vs. Edie Van Heelin’ [MarriedAndHeels]

ย THE ADVENTURES OF TEE BONE MAN:
Tee Bone Man vs. Edie Van Heelin’

THE EPIC CONCLUSION TO TEE BONE MAN:ย  PHASE ONE – THE SQUIRREL SAGA

A tense Tee Bone Man sat on the couch, gently stroking his new squirrel friend, Ripper.ย  They were once mortal enemies, but now they were joined in grief.ย  Their teammate, El Moustachio, disappeared during their battle against the evil Wicked Lester Blackwell.ย  He had fallen into a pit, and vanished without a trace.ย  Superdekes worked tirelessly at his computer, trying to figure out exactly what happened.ย  He was coming up empty.

“I’m sorry Tee, I’m done for today.ย  I’m burned out,” gasped an exhausted Deke as he got up from his desk and planted himself in his armchair.

“Me too, buddy, me too,” said an aimless Tee Bone.ย  “Something tells me things are only getting worse before they get better.”

Deke shuddered.ย  “Don’t say that man, have some hope.”

Tee Bone placed Ripper on the ground, allowing him to run around the floor of Deke’s Palace.ย  Moustachio’s last act was to save the little furry guy from the same fate as his. Ripper took off like a dart for the pantry, looking for crumbs.

“Put on a record, will ya?” asked Deke.ย  “Don’t care which one.ย  Something rocking.”

“Good idea,” said Tee Bone as he stood and walked towards their record racks.ย  “Here’s one that just arrived.ย  Motley Crue – New Tattoo.ย  Any good?”

Deke shrugged.ย  “Can’t remember, pal.ย  Put it on.”

Tee Bone scanned the track list, and selected one song that sounded cool called “Hell On High Heels”.ย  The Mick Mars riff nearly blew off Tee Bone’s left eyebrow.

“Wow!ย  This ain’t bad!ย  That Mars could really wail,” exclaimed Tee as he played air guitar to the track.ย  Superdekes rocked in his chair, enjoying the heavy groove.

But then….

“Boys call ya Hell on high heels…heels…heels…heels…” went the record as it skipped along.

“Uh oh,” spat Deke as he shot up.ย  “Danger vibes.”

“Guess our work is never done.ย  Can you track it on your scanner?” asked Tee, while Deke went back to his computer.

“Yep, but nothing pinpointed…just a general area.ย  United States.ย  West coast.ย  That’s as close as I can get it.ย  That’s a lot of territory.ย  And I can’t pick up anything specific about the threat, either.ย  Think it’s connected to Moustachio?ย  What do you think we should do?”

Tee Bone thought a moment.ย  “Yellow alert.ย  Let’s sit tight, but be ready to take action in a split second if necessary.ย  Maybe warm up the X-Wing, just in case.”

“Copy that,” answered Deke.ย  “Got your new guitar tuned up?”

“Always, man.ย  Always,” answered Tee Bone with a dead serious tone.

The two heroes would not be resting today.

California

ย Edie Van Heelin’ and Fanboy Mike were in the middle of it!ย  A tense game of road hockey had broken out, and Mike was in the net.ย  ย Edie had never held a hockey stick before, but somehow Mike had yet to stop one of her shots.ย  He sweat beneath the thick heavy goalie pads.

“Time out!ย  Time out!” he called, removing his mask and helmet.ย  “The heck is going on here!”ย  A peacock in the driveway honked, as if calling time out.

Edie raised her stick.ย  She was dressed all in silver, with hot pink nails.ย  Her boots boasted eight inches of heels, and her long brown hair hung straight to her waist.ย  She hardly looked like a hockey threat, but the scoreboard didn’t lie.ย  Mr. Van Heelin’ laughed in his lawn chair as he marked five goals for his wife.

“The only thing going on here is that Mr. Van Heelin’ is getting cramps from laughing so hard!” answered Edie.ย  “I thought you were Canadian!”

“And I thought you had never played before!ย  Who taught you to play dirty, Brad Marchand?” panted Mike in his Leafs jersey, sporting number 88, William Nylander.ย  “Whose idea was this anyway?ย  Not mine!”

“No, it was your wife’s idea actually!” laughed Edie.ย  “And she knew you’d lose!”

“It was a setup from the start!” laughed Mike.ย  “Wait until I get home!”

It was at that moment he noticed the sky darken with shadow.ย  “Uh oh,” he gulped.ย  The shadow was perfectly saucer-shaped….

Edie covered her eyes with an impeccably manicured hand, as she looked up.ย  A UFO hovered overhead.ย  Pesky aliens, again?ย  Interrupting her hockey game, just as she was totally humiliating Mike?ย  Unfair!

“Stand back!” she beckoned to Mike as the UFO slowly landed in the middle of the street.ย  “I’ve handled these guys before.”

“So have I!” answered Mike.ย  “I’m coming with you!”ย  He suddenly had his energy back as the adrenaline kicked in.

The ramp to the UFO lowered slowly, dramatically.

Out stepped a shirtless, dirty, tattooed man wearing sunglasses, a crooked baseball cap, jeans, and no shoes.

“Thomas Lee Bass…” announced Edie.ย  “To what do we owe the pleasure this time?”ย  She had very little patience for Tommy Lee on the best of days.ย  But when he came interrupting her hockey game, it had better be important.

“Yo!ย  Edie Van Heelin’!ย  Fanboy Mike!ย  Duuuuudes!ย  So glad you could make it!” shouted Tommy as he raced in to hug them.ย  Edie tolerated the hug for two full seconds before pushing him away.

“OK Tommy, that’s enough.ย  Talk, tell us why you’re here, and then we’ll finish our little hockey game here.”

“Yo, Edie, my alien buds and I came here to warn you!”ย  He stopped talking.ย  A long pause ensued.

“Warn her of what??” prodded Mike.

“Oh yeah!ย  Dudes…you might wanna sit down for this,” said Tommy with surfboy seriousness.

“There are no chairs Tommy, it’s a road,” deadpanned Edie.ย  Tommy sat anyway.

“Dudes…Edie…I know you care about the animals, right?” asked Tommy.

“Yes, get to it, I don’t like where this is going,” prompted Edie.

“There’s this animal abuser up in Canada.ย  Only you can take him down.ย  He’s strong.ย  They call him ‘Tee Bone Man’.ย  He’s super powered, like you.ย  Only not as a hot, and also a dude,” blurted Tommy in a flurry of words.

Mike stepped in between Edie and Tommy.ย  Mr. Van Heelin’ wandered aimlessly nearby, playing Pokemon Go, ignoring the confrontation brewing in front of him.

“No no…that’s wrong.ย  I know Tee Bone Man.ย  I know those guys.ย  They’re good guys.ย  They’re heroes.ย  They saved me once.ย  You’re wrong, Tommy,” said Mike with urgency.

“Oh yeah?ย  Check this out!” said Tommy as he pulled a hologram projector from his pocket.ย  He activated the device with the flick of a button.

A holographic image flashed before them.ย  It was Tee Bone himself, out of costume, and relaxing at his camp.ย  Wait…no…he wasn’t relaxing at all.ย  What was he doing?ย  He was looking up.ย  There was a squirrel in the trees.ย  Tee Bone removed his baseball hat, and placed it in a clearing.ย  Then he went into the bushes, waiting.ย  All of this was clearly captured by hologram.ย  Then there was a rush of activity; the squirrel was on the ground, and Tee Bone was fighting the small creature!ย  It put up a hearty struggle, but was no match for the superpowered human.ย  Suddenly, the squirrel was locked into a rocket!ย  Tee Bone launched the rocket…and the recording came to an end!

Edie turned towards Mike.ย  “You know this person Mike?”ย  She was seriously questioning him.

“Yes, Edie, he’s the guy I spent Christmas Day with!ย  Remember, you flew me there!”ย  Mike had pleading in his voice.ย  Tommy just looked up and smiled.

“Dude, if you know that guy, you can tell from the recording it was him.ย  You can’t fake hologram recordings like you can videos, man.ย  This is real.”

Edie was grave.ย  “Mike…I’m sorry…what I see here is unacceptable.ย  I have to bring this man to justice, even if he is your friend.ย  What I saw on that recording was horrific animal abuse.ย  I cannot tolerate this.ย  I’m going to have to take him down before he does it again, if he hasn’t already.ย  You know how much I love Canadian squirrels…I am so sorry.”

Mike looked down at his shoes.ย  “I can’t believe this.ย  That was him.ย  That was Tee Bone Man.ย  I saw it too.”

“At least I know where he hides.ย  Thunder Bay, Canada, right?” asked Edie.

“Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada,” corrected Mike, “and I’m coming with you.”

Edie shook her head.ย  “Too dangerous.ย  And you have too much at stake.ย  Stay here with Mr. Van Heelin’.ย  You can build Lego together.”ย  Mike cringed as Mr. Van Heelin’ explored the nearby bushes for rare Pokemon.

“I think you should stay behind, dude!” interjected Tommy.

“No way!” Mike stood his ground.ย  “I’m coming with her.ย  At least I can talk to him.ย  Maybe find out his side of the story.”

“His side of the story?ย  What reason does any sane man have to forcefully put an innocent squirrel inside a rocket and launch it?ย  That’s intolerable!”

“I agree,” said Mike.ย  “But I’m insisting this time.”

“Fine!” exclaimed an exasperated Edie.ย  “I better go suit up,” she said as she ran to her shoe shed for rocket boots.

Mike removed his heavy, sweaty goalie pads and hockey jersey, leaving only his Nylander T-shirt beneath.ย  Though cooling down, he only fretted aimlessly in the street as he waited.

“You OK there, bromingo?” asked Tommy.

“No…I’m pretty far from OK,” sighed Mike.ย  “This is all wrong.ย  Everything about this is wrong.”

Tommy Lee laughed as he climbed back up the ramp of his UFO.ย  “Later dudes!” he cackled as the hatch sealed shut.

Edie re-emerged just as Tommy’s UFO was lifting off with a burst of light.ย  She was now dressed geared up in her matching silver rocket boots.ย  She wielded her favourite red guitar.ย  She was ready for action.ย  Without a word, a very tense Mike climbed on her back and the pair took off into the northern skies.

Thunder Bayย

ย “We have movement,” shouted Deke across the room.ย  “Whatever the threat is, it’s mobile.”

Tee Bone Man was fully suited up, cape and guitar at the ready for immediate action.ย  His body was taut and his brow was furrowed in concern.ย  “Heading?” he asked.

Deke studied the data on his screen, pinching the spot on his nose between the eyes to help focus.ย  They had been on alert for hours.

“Looks like…heading is North-East.”ย  He turned to look at his friend.ย  “On course for Thunder Bay…”

Tee Bone paced the floor.ย  “Well, at least we don’t have to go anywhere this time.ย  How much time do we have?”

Studying the data some more, Deke estimated roughly four hours.ย  “Which gives us plenty of time to fortify and prepare a defense,” added Deke.

Tee Bone nodded.ย  “Do it.ย  I want all the blast shields down over every window.ย  I want emergency power fully charged.ย  Get your bike fueled up, with all the weapon hardpoints armed and loaded.ย  And I want the finest Scotch we have ready for action.ย  Stewart’s brand.”

“On it!” shouted Deke in the affirmative.ย  “What will you be doing?”

“I’m going out to patrol,” said a grim Tee Bone Man.ย  He picked up his new stealth-black guitar and held it like an axe.ย  “Keep in touch,” he instructed Deke.ย  “Let me know of any changes.”

“Of course…I’m not new here, man!” joked Deke, which helped cut the tension.ย  “Where’s Ripper?”

“In his room, listening to Led Zeppelin,” answered Tee.

Tee Bone headed out the main entrance.ย  A blast door slammed shut behind him.ย  Today was, at least, a nice day in Thunder Bay.ย  The sky was blue, scattered with crisp, wispy white clouds.ย  The birds chirped away, completely oblivious to the threat heading their way.ย  Tee Bone walked nervous, his eyes on the sky, listening with intent to every sound.ย  Who could this threat be?ย  They had enough enemies.ย  Couldn’t be the Martians, or they wouldn’t be coming here from the west coast.ย  They’d already be here.ย  Couldn’t be Billy Sheehan, Deke’s nemesis “Common Knowledge”.ย  He’s on tour in Europe.ย  Brad Marchand is in Boston.ย  Their list of foes was dwindling as he counted them off.

Deke buzzed him on the radio.ย  Tee Bone noticed the blast shields were now down as he answered.ย  “What’s up, pal?” he responded.

“That thing is picking up speed.ย  I figure we only have an hour left,” he warned.

“Alright buddy.ย  It’s quiet out here.”ย  Tee Bone scanned the skies once more.ย  “Maybe a little too quiet.”

Too quiet indeed.ย  Where were the birds?ย  Gone….

“All the children in the distant house, they have feelings only children know!” sang Tee Bone.ย  “But the lover whose bird has flown, catches nothing only flakes of snow!”ย  The Deep Purple classic rang through the trees, but the birds remained silent.

“I have a bad feeling about this,” murmured Tee Bone.ย  “This is all so damn peculiar.ย  Nothing makes sense.”

Time crawled by.ย  Deke remained inside, minding the scanners.ย  The threat was steadily approaching now.ย  It would not be long.

Tee Bone Man’s radio buzzed.ย  “Any second now,” warned Superdekes.ย  “I expect you’ll be hearing a sonic boom soon.”

“Copy that,” answered Tee Bone Man.ย  “Stay put for now, and keep an eye on everything!”

Suddenly, the sky cracked with a thunderous cannonade, and a bright flash overhead.ย  A strand of silver in the sky could be seen, sleek and fast, and coming in hot.

“Visual contact established!” shouted Tee Bone Man into his radio.ย  “Red alert!”ย  He was poised, with his guitar in the attack position.ย  He reached into his pocket for a flask, and poured his strongest Scotch into the instrument.ย  It glowed and buzzed with electric energy.ย  The hum was audible.ย  Tee Bone was ready.

Then, with a loud BOOM, a cloud of dust exploded on the ground, a mere fifty meters away!ย  With every fiber on alert, Tee Bone was like a runner, ready to sprint into action.ย  He breathed deep and steady as he waited for the dust to clear.

He could not believe his eyes.ย  Before him was a woman dressed entirely in silver, bearing a red guitar, and perfectly straight long brown hair.ย  Even after that power landing, her hair was salon-perfect while her silver skirt remained un-mussed.ย  A figure jumped off her back, and landed beside her.ย  The pair began walking towards Tee Bone Man, with the woman in silver in front and the other figure, a bearded man, trailing behind.

“Stop and identify yourselves!” commanded Tee Bone.ย  “This is private property and we just had the lawn maintained!”

The woman was not slowing down.ย  “Tee Bone Man, I presume?” she asked with an aggressive tone.

“The same,” he answered.ย  “And who might you be?”ย  Then he squinted as he focused on the man.ย  “Brainiac??ย  Is that you?”

“Hey, Tee,” answered Mike with a sullen heart.

The woman turned to Mike with an eyebrow raised.ย  “‘Brainiac’?ย  They call you Brainiac instead of Mike?”

“Long story, Edie,” he answered.ย  “I always beat them at music trivia.”

“Them?” she asked.

“Yes, there’s two of them.ย  Superdekes will be inside, keeping tabs on us,” he responded.

“You haven’t answered my question!” reminded Tee Bone Man.ย  “Who are you again?”

The woman walked right up to him.ย  Though Tee Bone Man was several inches taller, Edie Van Heelin’s boots enabled her to look him right in the eye.

“The name’s Edie Van Heelin’.ย  I see you know Fanboy Mike.”

Tee Bone removed his glasses.ย  “‘Fanboy Mike’?ย  You call him Fanboy Mike?”ย  He turned to look at the Brainiac.ย  “I feel like you’ve had a whole other life we didn’t know about!”

Edie piped up.ย  “He’s my partner, and we’ve come to bring you to justice, Tee Bone Man.”

The radio buzzed.ย  “What’s going on out there man, check in…” said Superdekes over the airwaves.

Tee Bone buzzed him back.ย  “It’s OK.ย  Sit tight.ย  Brainiac is here with a friend of his.ย  I got this.”ย  The radio squawked with surprise from Deke before Tee Bone killed the transmission.ย  He then returned his attention to Edie.ย  “Justice for what, exactly?ย  I’ve heard of you, by the way.ย  I’ve seen your band on Youtube.ย  You are a brilliant guitar player, and I’d like to jam with you when this is over.ย  But seriously, do you know who I am, and what we do here!?ย  We are not your enemies.”

“I tried to explain…” interjected Mike, but Edie was not backing down.

“I know you abuse animals!” she shot like bullets.ย  “We’ve seen a holographic recording.ย  We know what happened at your camp!” revealed Edie Van Heelin’.

Tee Bone’s jaw dropped.ย  Camp!ย  Why did everything always have to go back to that vacation, at camp?ย  That damned squirrel…Ripper, now his friend…once his tormentor.

Tee Bone put down his guitar and raised his hands in mock surrender.ย  “OK, OK, I get it.ย  We have a severe misunderstanding here.”

“A misunderstanding?”ย  Edie was furious now.ย  Mike the Brainiac began unconsciously backing up, one small step at a time.ย  The tension was palpable.ย  Edie was still in command of the situation, questioning Tee Bone Man hard.ย  “We saw a recording of you attacking a squirrel, locking it into a rocket, and launching into who knows where!ย  Do you deny it?”

Tee Bone shrugged.ย  “Well, no, that did happen,” he acknowledged.

Edie smirked.ย  “That’s all I needed to know.”

“Edie, no!” shouted Mike, but it was too late.

Igniting her rocket boots, Edie Van Halen shot directly into Tee Bone Man, tackling him off his feet, and into the air!ย  His black stealth guitar lay on the ground, where Mike was now standing alone.ย  He watched the contrails as Edie rocketed Tee Bone Man far away from Deke’s Palace and all its defenses.

Mike kicked the dirt in frustration.ย  “Smart move,” he grumbled.ย  “I’d better go talk to Deke.”ย  He picked up Tee Bone Man’s guitar and ran towards the Palace entrance, now that Edie and Tee were completely out of sight.

ย Over the skies of Thunder Bay, a mighty battle was taking place.

An unarmed Tee Bone Man was being carried by the cape, across the sky, by a rocket-powered Edie Van Heelin’.

“I’ll show you what we do with animal abusers!” she warned him as she wound up and threw him into a patch of tall trees.ย  Tee Bone Man hit the trunk of one tree hard.ย  He moaned aloud, and fell to the ground limp.ย  Edie Van Heelin’ landed a short distance away.ย  “You have two choices.ย  You can surrender now, and I turn you into the authorities.ย  Or, you can keep on getting your butt kicked by a girl.ย  Up to you.”

Tee Bone wiped a splash of blood off his lower lip.ย  “Well, I’m not what you’d call a masochist, but I’m also not one for giving up so easily.”ย  Then he winked at her.ย  “Catch.”

“Catch what?” she asked, just as Tee Bone threw his radio right at her head.ย  Distracted, she swatted it away, but it was too late.ย  Tee Bone was airborne and getting away.

“Aw, heck!” said Edie as she ignited her rocket boots in pursuit.

Back at Deke’s Palace, Mike and Deke sat nervously by the radio.

“Come in Tee Bone Man!ย  Come in Tee Bone Man!” said Deke urgently.ย  He turned to Mike.ย  “Nothing.ย  Channel is dead.”

Mike was sweating.ย  “This day could not have gone any worse!”

“You wanna start from the beginning again?” asked Superdekes.ย  “What the hell is going on here!ย  Something about the squirrel?”

“That’s right,” answered Mike.ย  “Tommy Lee showed us a holographic recording.ย  Tee Bone attacked a squirrel, put him in a rocket, and fired him off somewhere.ย  It was not a pretty video, Deke.ย  Tee Bone looked insane!ย  And Edie has zero tolerance for animal abusers.ย  That’s her passion.ย  Even more than music.”

Deke knew part of this story already.ย  Camp…Tee Bone’s sanity frayed…that pesky squirrel driving him to the breaking point.ย  But he also knew that the squirrel, now known as Ripper, was safe and sound in his room.ย  Deke turned back to Mike.

“So all this time we’ve known you, you’ve had a secret life as a sidekick to a superhero?” questioned Deke.

“Well, no, not all this time.ย  It’s a fairly recent thing.ย  But yes, we’ve had plenty of adventures so far.ย  And she’s a rock star too.ย  Wolfgang Van Halen is producing her debut album.”

“And how powerful is she?” continued Deke, impressed but focused on the task.

“Very,” said Mike grimly.ย  “She’s a match for Tee Bone Man.ย  I don’t know her whole origin story yet, but when she has those rocket boots on she’s unstoppable.ย  Her guitar is a weapon, similar to Tee’s.ย  But where she has the edge, and where Tee Bone Man is in serious trouble, is that she can communicate with animals.ย  She could summon a dozen skunks and command them to attack.ย  She’s done it before.”

“Ewwww!” said Deke.ย  “Shit, I say no to that!”ย  He then stood up and made his way to the garage.ย  “Still, if she’s more than a match for Tee Bone, then it’s time Tee Bone had some backup.ย  I’ll be on my flying motorcycle.ย  You mind the Palace.ย  Don’t let any animals in.ย  Understand?”

“Roger roger,” answered Mike as he handed Tee Bone Man’s guitar over to Deke.ย  “He’ll be needing this.”ย  Mike sat at the security monitors and spoke with concern.ย  “Deke…don’t hurt her.ย  Please.”ย  Deke nodded affirmative as he left the room.ย  But Deke didn’t know if he would be able to keep that promise.ย  He put his helmet on and mounted his flying bike.ย  It was go time!

Moments later, and with a mighty blast, Mike heard Deke take to the skies.ย  He sighed.

“It’s all out of my hands now,” said a despondent Mike as his slouched into his chair.

Tee Bone Man was flying as fast he could, but Edie was still gaining on him.

“Last warning!” she announced.ย  As she pursued, she took steady aim with her bright red guitar.ย  With an arpeggio of perfect notes, she sent a sonic blast right at Tee Bone Man.ย  It hit him square on the back and he shuddered as he struggled to maintain flight.

“I felt that one!” said Tee Bone Man to himself.ย  “This is great…no radio, no guitar, no Superdekes, and I’m being pursued by an obsessed woman in a silver dress…on any other day, that wouldn’t be so bad!”

He took evasive action, now diving towards the trees.ย  Edie was right behind him.ย  She took another shot with her guitar, crunchy power chords, but they impacted the tree canopy as Tee Bone took cover beneath.

Edie landed in the forest, unable to see Tee Bone Man.ย  She looked around and raised her arms.

“Canadian raccoons!ย  To my side!”

In moments, a gaze of raccoons was gathering at her silver-clad feet.ย  Edie instructed the raccoons.

“There’s a bad man in these woods!ย  Tell me where he is, but do not engage!” she commanded.ย  The raccoons obeyed and scattered.ย  Edie waited.ย  And waited.ย  Suddenly, she heard the cry of the raccoons, alerting her that Tee Bone Man was just a little further south.ย  Edie set off in pursuit, following the sound of the raccoons.

Through the trees, she heard rockets.ย  She saw only fleeting glimpses, but intuited that this must be the infamous Superdekes, Tee Bone Man’s partner.ย  “Partner in animal abuse,” she spat.

Surely enough, Deke was now on the ground, on his motorcycle, directly in her path and roaring her way.ย  Edie stood at the ready, guitar aimed right at Superdekes’ helmet.ย  Deke slowed, raised his arms, and dismounted his bike.

“It’s OK lady, I’m not going to hurt you.ย  Edie Van Heelin’, right?”

Edie laughed.ย  “Hurt me?ย  Unlikely my friend.ย  You must be Superdekes.ย  Do you stand with animal abusers?”ย  She was visibly angry.

Deke removed his helmet, revealing his aged, battle-rugged but wise features.ย  “I stand with my friend,” he announced.ย  “But you only have half the story.”

“I don’t care.ย  I saw what he did, and he admitted it.ย  Stand with your friend, fall with your friend,” she warned.ย ย Edie placed her silver fingertips on the fretboard and pulled off some impressive two-handed tapping.ย  The sound wave rippled towards Superdekes…where it dissipated harmlessly around him.ย  Deke smiled.

“My newest gadget.ย  Electronic sound baffles.ย  I designed this for my arch enemy, a bassist.ย  But it can nullify guitar frequencies just as easily.ย  You can’t hurt me with that, Edie,” boasted Deke.

Edie was unphased.ย  “I don’t have to.ย  Canadian blue jays!ย  Attack!”ย  Edie pointed right at Deke, just as a formation of four blue jays dive-bombed him.ย  Deke got his helmet back on just in time, as it was doused in gross blue jay poo.ย  Largely harmless, but the attack bought Edie time enough to escape.

“Those would have been porcupines if you weren’t friends with Mike!” she warned.ย ย Igniting her rocket boots, Edie soared once again over the treeline.ย  She hovered, searching for Tee Bone Man, who was nowhere to be seen.

“Tee Bone Man!ย  Show yourself and finish this!” she commanded.

Moments later, a streak of colour could be seen in the sky.ย  It was Tee Bone Man, returned to battle.ย  And he had his guitar this time.ย  With his trademark Van Halen mask over his face, Tee Bone Man spoke.

“We have more in common than you think, Mrs. Van Heelin’,” he cautioned.ย  “This doesn’t have to go this way.”

Edie faced him, fiercely, one more time.ย  “I don’t think you quite understand, Tee Bone Man.ย  Nothing is more important to me than the safety of the animals.ย  I saw what you did, and you admitted it.ย  There’s nothing more to discuss.ย  Surrender.ย  You are breaking Fanboy Mike’s heart.”

“Leave the Brainiac out of this,” advised Tee Bone Man.ย  “You don’t know what really happened at camp!”

Edie placed her silver nail on her lips.ย  “OK.ย  Fine.ย  Convince me.ย  You have 60 seconds.”

Tee Bone Man took a deep breath and tried to explain.ย  “Last summer at camp…there was a squirrel.ย  The one you saw on your recording.ย  A recording that I did not know existed, and when this is over, we need to look at who was responsible for making it.ย  Why they were spying on me on my vacation.”

“You’re wasting time,” noted Edie as she pointed to her watch.

“That squirrel, Ripper, engaged in a combination of harassment and psychological warfare with me…he broke my sanity with his constant, non-stop attacks at camp.ย  I was not in control of my faculties.ย  ย I did not hurt him.ย  It was the opposite!ย  And he is safe now, I only shot him off to Australia…”

Edie interrupted.ย  “Australia?ย  You monster!”

“I’m telling you, I had no other choice!ย  It was him or me.ย  That squirrel is not what he seems!”

Edie made mock crying motions with her hands.ย  “Aww, poor Tee Bone Man was harassed by a squirrel!ย  Cry me a river!ย  Sorry, Tee Bone Man…this is not good enough.ย  Not for me!”ย  She raised her guitar, chugged a riff out with some serious right hand picking, and blasted him full force in the chest.ย  It sent him tumbling, but Tee Bone Man recovered quickly and moved into attack position.

“Hey Edie!” shouted Tee Bone.ย  “Have you met my friend Superdekes yet?”ย  Edie looked puzzled, just as a volley of sonic bursts exploded right behind her.ย  It was Superdekes on his flying bike, and he was unloading everything he had.

“Better climb!” shouted Edie as she hit the afterburners on her boots.ย  She rocketed out of range, leaving a contrail in her wake.

“Follow the contrail!” advised Superdekes, as Tee Bone roared in pursuit.

Tee Bone took aim with his own guitar, and sent a blast Edie’s way.ย  She was too fast.ย  With her afterburners on, she was able to break the sound barrier, and outrun anything he threw at her.ย  But Edie could not keep the afterburners on forever!

Edie, fleeing at top speed, heard a beeping in her earpiece and noticed her fuel was alarmingly low.ย  She only had about 10 minutes of flight left, at best.ย  Less if she maintained this velocity.

“Chances are I can refuel back at their headquarters, if I can beat them there, and if Mike will help me get inside,” thought Edie.ย  “That’s a big ‘if’.”ย  She changed course.ย  Heading:ย  Deke’s Palace.

ย Back at the Palace, Mike was glued to the screens.ย  He was joined by Ripper, seated on the control desk and eating acorns from his hand.ย  Ripper munched, and looked up at the Brainiac.

“Squee?” inquired Ripper.

“Sorry buddy,” answered the Brainiac.ย  “I don’t speak squirrel.ย  But if you’re worried about Tee Bone and Superdekes, so am I.”

Mike’s earpiece, given to him by Edie, buzzed.

“Mike!ย  Mike!ย  Are you there?ย  I’m heading your way.ย  Out of fuel.ย  Need your help to fuel up.ย  They must have rocket fuel there, for the flying bike.”

Mike answered excitedly.ย  “Yes!ย  Yes there is, in Deke’s garage here.ย  Are you OK?”

“Don’t worry about me, get the fuel ready!ย  I’m inbound now – 60 seconds to landing!”

Mike didn’t know what to do!ย  By helping Edie, he could be dooming Deke and Tee.ย  By not helping Edie, he could be putting her in terrible danger.ย  Ripper looked up at him with pleading in his eyes.ย  He didn’t want anyone to get hurt.

Then an idea struck.ย  “Wait a minute…I might not be able to speak squirrel…but I do know someone who can!ย  Come on, Ripper!ย  I can only hope that the truth of the story exonerates Tee Bone, but you will have to tell Edie Van Heelin’ what really happened at camp!”ย  Ripper nodded yes eagerly, and climbed up Brainiac’s arm onto his shoulder.

“Come on…let’s go outside and meet her there.”

At that exact moment, Edie Van Heelin’ came to a crash landing right at the garage doors!

“Edie!ย  Edie!ย  You OK!”

Edie sat in the dirt and wiped the dust off her silver skirt.ย  “I’m good, I’m good…rough landing…ran out of juice about 20 seconds ago and had to improvise a crash landing.ย  You have the fuel?”

Mike hesitated.ย  “Yes…and I have something else too.ย  Someone else.”ย  Edie noticed Ripper standing at attention on Mike’s shoulder.

Edie’s face suddenly softened as she saw the animal.

“Awwww!ย  Who’s this?!ย  You cutie!ย  Canadian squirrels are simply too adorable!”

Mike did the introductions.

“Edie, this is Ripper.ย  Ripper, this is Edie.ย  Edie, Ripper has something he needs to tell you.”

A short distance away, both Tee Bone Man and Superdekes came to quiet landings.ย  They watched from a safe distance as Ripper ran down Mike’s arm, and up onto Edie’s silver dress.

“Oh, careful with the claws little guy!ย  Tickles,” she laughed as Ripper stepped close to her ear.ย  “Mike, fuel the boots!”

Mike did as he was asked, even as he hoped and prayed this conflict would end here and now.ย  He attached a nozzle to Edie’s left boot.ย  Seeing Tee Bone and Deke holding their positions, he nodded to them that everything was alright.ย  He looked up.ย  “Come on Ripper.ย  Out with it.ย  Tell her.”

Edie listened as Ripper spoke in squirrel language.ย  All Mike could hear was squee-squee-squee.ย  To Edie, it was plain as English.

“Hi Edie, I really like your dress,” said Ripper into her ear.ย  “But you don’t understand.ย  Tee Bone Man didn’t hurt me.ย  He saved me!”

Edie was puzzled.ย  “Saved you how?ย  I saw the recording.ย  He attacked you and tossed you into a rocket like a test animal from the 1950s!”

“I deserved it Edie!” screeched Ripper.ย  “What Tee Bone did was a favour!ย  He arrived at camp, and I harassed him harder than I have ever tortured a human.ย  I dropped poop on his head!ย  I kept him awake all night!ย  I nearly gave him a heart attack!ย  I literally drove him insane!ย  But rather than kill me, which he could have done if he wanted to, he launched me in a rocket to Australia.ย  It was there I met Harrison Holden…they call him El Moustachio.ย  Moustachio showed me kindness.ย  He was the first human to treat me as a friend and not a pest.ย  My life changed that day!ย  Harrison saved me.ย  And it would not have happened if Tee Bone did not launch me in a rocket.ย  That is the truth.ย  He is not a bad guy.ย  He is the good guy.ย  You have everything all wrong, Edie!ย  As you know, we squirrels cannot tell a lie.ย  Our brains are simply not complex enough to comprehend a lie.ย  Please Edie…call it off.ย  Call it off.”

Edie noticed that Tee Bone Man and Superdekes had joined them.

“What did he tell you, Edie”? asked Tee Bone.

“He told me it wasn’t your fault.ย  That you actually helped him.ย  That you showed him mercy when you did not have to,” answered Edie with relief in her voice.

Tee Bone Man nodded.ย  “It’s true.ย  All of it.”

Superdekes extended a hand.ย  “Truce?”

Edie looked down at his hand, paused a moment, and embraced it.ย  “Truce,” she responded.

“Keep the rocket fuel,” winked Deke.

“I only fueled up one boot,” advised Mike.ย  “Don’t leave without fueling up the other or it’ll be an awkward flight home!”

Edie faced Tee Bone Man and Superdekes.ย ย “Boys…I am so sorry about this…”

Tee Bone raised his hand, and Edie stopped.

“I understand.ย  You don’t need to explain.ย  I get it; I am an animal lover too.ย  We all are.ย  Living in Thunder Bay, we are always surrounded by nature.”

“Yeah,” continued Deke.ย  “I’d never hurt an animal Edie.”

“It’s beautiful here!” exclaimed Edie.ย  “I could live here.ย  This is paradise!”

Mike took a deep breath and sighed in relief.ย ย “I’m glad this is over!ย  This has been the most stressful day of my life!”

“Thanks for sorting this one out, Fanboy,” answered Edie.ย  “Glad to have you by my side on this one.”ย  She smiled a deep smile and hugged her friend.

Tee Bone pointed his finger back and forth at the pair.ย  “So how do you know each other again?ย  Van Heelin’ is based out of California, are they not?ย  How’d you meet?” asked Tee, referring to Edie’s Van Halen tribute band.

“It’s a long story…” started Edie.

“I was drooling all over her after a club gig,” interrupted Mike.ย  “She must have thought I resembled a puppy dog or something, because we’ve been friends ever since.”ย  Edie smiled back at him.

“Well, I remember it somewhat differently,” she chuckled.ย  “You were very flattering and respectful.”

“Flattery is one word for it…” mumbled Mike under his breath.

Tee Bone Man stepped in.ย  “Now that we’ve got this situation under control, we need to start asking some bigger questions.ย  Come on…let’s go inside.ย  You drink Scotch, Edie?”

Edie laughed.ย  “Never!”ย  Tee Bone and Superdekes both dropped their jaws.ย  “But I sure could go for a hot tea.ย  You boys have tea this far north?”

Deke nodded affirmative.ย  “Sure do.ย  Brainiac here has been drinking tea on his recent visits, in fact.”

“Gee, I wonder why that would be?” said Mike as he nudged Edie in the side.

The group of four humans and one squirrel headed inside Deke’s Palace, just as the sun began to set.

ย “Green tea with local honey, as ordered!” said Deke as he presented Edie with a steaming hot cup.ย  “Careful with that!” he advised.

Tee Bone entered the room, having changed from his cape and costume.ย  He was now wearing a Habs jersey, jeans, and his favourite Iron Maiden socks.ย  Deke took a seat in his armchair, while Mike and Edie shared a chaise lounge.ย  Ripper sat upon Edie’s shoulder.

“So, here’s what we know so far,” began Tee Bone.ย  “You two were shown a selectively edited holographic recording.ย  It showed you the last few moments of what happened at camp last summer.ย  That alone suggested to me, this was all a setup.ย  Someone with access to high technology was spying on me, and used this information to send you two here to take me down.ย  That’s alarming.ย  Who do we know with this kind of technology?”

Deke shook his head.ย  “Not Common Knowledge.ย  He’d be lost with that kind of tech.”

“And definitely not Marchand,” addedย  Tee.

Edie shot up off the lounge.ย  “Shinzon!”

“Who?” asked Tee Bone and Superdekes simultaneously.

Mike explained.ย  “Shinzon.ย  He’s an Australian clone that we ran into a short while ago.ย  Remember the worldwide Lego disappearance?”ย  Everyone nodded yes.ย  A worldwide Lego disappearance isn’t easily forgotten.ย  “That was all Shinzon, and he had crazy tech!” finished the Brainiac.

“Do you have a picture of this Shinzon, Brainiac?” asked Tee Bone.

“I do!” answered Mike as he reached for his phone.

“When were you taking pictures on that mission, Mike??” asked Edie.

“I’m always documenting all our adventures, Edie!” answered the Brainiac.ย  “One day, I’m going to write everything down and post all our adventures on a website for people to read.”ย  He paused as he scrolled.ย  “Here.ย  Shinzon.ย  That’s him at the Toys R Us store where we first encountered him.”ย  Mike handed the phone over to Tee Bone, who removed his glasses to take a closer look.

“Dear God!ย  Look at this, Superdekes!”ย  He brought the phone over to Deke.

“No way,” said Deke as he stared.ย  “He looks exactly like Moustachio!”

It suddenly clicked for Mike.ย  “Moustachio!ย  The Australian guy I met here at your Christmas party!ย  You’re right!”

Deke put two pictures up on the big screens, side by side to compare.ย  On the left, Harrison Holden, Australian and moustached.ย  On the right, an identical face, equally Australian, only baby-smooth and hairless!

Edie leaned in to whisper in Mike’s ear.ย  “Notice they both have the same silky smooth hair?”

“I did notice that!” Mike whispered back.

“I’ll be back,” said Deke as he excused himself momentarily.

“The hell is going on here?!” exclaimed Tee Bone.ย  “Who would create an evil opposite clone of Moustachio?ย  What does he want with us?ย  How does Tommy Lee fit into all this?”

Ripper said something into Edie’s ear.ย  “I concur, Ripper.”ย  She faced the group.ย  “Guys, what Ripper is saying makes sense.ย  He says it must have been a setup!ย  He says Shinzon clearly wanted us to battle each other, to take one or both of us out at the same time.ย  Shinzon obviously gave that tech to Tommy Lee, to give to me.ย  Tommy has been a recurring problem in our lives,” said Edie as Mike made a face, remembering Tommy Lee’s “Bouncy Castle”.ย  Edie continued the story.ย  “Shinzon has been repeatedly targeting Mike and I for some time now.ย  He’s clearly in league with Tommy Lee, and Lee is not to be trusted.ย  In fact we have to assume all of Motley Crue is compromised.”

“Not Mick Mars,” corrected Tee Bone Man.ย  “He’s out of the band now.”

“OK,” said Edie.ย  “Thanks for clarification.”

Mike stepped up now.ย  “Here’s the thing.ย  We think Shinzon is working for someone else.ย  Someone higher up the food chain.ย  Someone providing him with all this tech.”

“You mean this kind of tech?” asked Deke as he returned to the room.ย  In his hands was some kind of sophisticated camera.ย  “Look what I found in the trees.”ย  He dropped it on the coffee table in the center of the room.

“What is it?” asked Edie.

“That, Mrs. Van Heelin’, is a holographic recorder.ย  Just like the one they would have been using at Tee Bone’s camp.ย  This is how they got the recording.ย  This one has probably been in the trees since at least last summer.”

Nobody spoke as the weight of all this fell on them.ย  Finally, Edie broke the silence.

“In a way, I’m relieved.ย  Mike and I are no longer in this alone,” she said.

“That’s right!” exclaimed Mike as he stood.ย  “Shinzon wanted you two to take each other down, but the opposite has happened!ย  Instead, he has joined us together!”

The realization set in across the room.

“A super team…” pondered Edie.

“United in purpose…” added Mike.

“With technology equal to any that they have!” said Deke.

“What should we call ourselves?” asked Tee Bone.

“How about…the Northern Lights?” suggested Mike.

“But I’m not Canadian!” protested Edie.

“Yes you are…you are Canadian at heart, right guys?”ย  The whole group, even Ripper, nodded yes.

“The Northern Lights!ย  I like it!” said Tee Bone Man.ย  He then turned towards Edie.ย  “I believe I promised you a jam, my new friend.”

“Heck yeah!” said Edie with excitement.ย  “How about some Van Halen?”

Tee Bone went to go retrieve the guitars.ย  “I can do some Van Halen.ย  Got any songs in mind?”

“My theme song!” said Edie.ย  “‘Drop Dead Legs’!”

Tee Bone winked.ย  “Perfect!ย  Let’s rock!”

The two rocked out the main riff, and Edie stepped up to the microphone.

“Drop dead legs, pretty smile!ย  Hurts my head, gets me wild!ย  Dig that steam, giant butt…”

Mike laughed at that line, jumped up, and joined in on lead vocals.

“…Makes me scream, I get nuh-nuh-nothing but the shakes over you! And nothing else could ever do!”

Deke and Ripper pounded their fists and paws from the comfort of their chairs while an awesome jam session went down right there in Deke’s Palace.

The powers of evil had best take warning, now that the Northern Lights were on the watch!

Epilogue

ย From his hideout in space, Shinzon dreaded making the call he was about to make.ย  That he had to make.ย  He had no choice but to make.ย  He hit the transmit button.

“Shinzon to HQ.ย  Shinzon to HQ.ย  Come in.ย  Is he there?”

The communications crackled.

“Report, Shinzon,” came a distorted voice.

“Everything’s fine here, everything’s normal.ย  How are you?” squeaked Shinzon.

“Did your messenger boy Lee deliver the hologram to the Van Heelin’ woman?” asked the voice.

“He sure did,” answered Shinzon, without going further.ย  He would not be getting off so easy this time.

“And??” questioned the impatient voice.

Shinzon attempted to placate the voice.ย  “Well, just as you predicted, she took the bait.ย  She faced Tee Bone Man.ย  Just like you said she would.”

“Stop stalling Shinzon!ย  Report in full or I shall have your shoulders relieved of that lump you call a head!”

“Well…ummm…this is where reality departs from the story we hoped to tell.ย  They fought, but we didn’t count on interference from the Fanboy.ย  He brokered a truce between them…they formed an alliance…and that is where my surveillance ends, as Superdekes found my recording device.”

There was nothing but static from the communications console.ย  Finally, after an agonizingly long wait, the voice spoke again.

“They formed an alliance.”

Shinzon gulped.ย  “Yes my Lord.”

“Come see me.ย  Immediately.”ย  The channel went dead.

Shinzon was in deep doo doo this time.

“I’ll avenge myself upon you, Fanboy Mike, Edie Van Heelin’ and Tee Bone Man,” he murmured to himself.ย  “This is not over.ย  In fact, it is only the beginning.”

Final note from the author

Dear readers,

In early 2022, I wanted to get into writing more fiction, and also wanted to thank Troy Erickson for his tireless work providing music and artwork for the LeBrain Train (and later Grab A Stack of Rock).ย  In gratitude, I decided to write a story for him, with Troy as a superhero!ย  I came up with the idea of “Tee Bone Man” and his partner Superdekes.ย  This was loosely based on a comic book my friends and I worked on in highschool called Brett-Lore.ย  We created fictional science fiction versions of ourselves, and passed the book around, allowing different kids to write the next pages.ย  Tee Bone Man isn’t that different in conception.ย  It started with just one, but seven authors have contributed to date, with the amazing Harrison Kopp behind all the incredible Lego artwork.

Brett-Lore

I used to say that Chapter Six, Tee Bone Goes to Camp, was my best work.ย  It has now been supplanted.ย  I am so proud of Tee Bone Vs. Edie!ย  This was my favourite to write, a real pet project for me.ย  It’s my favourite to re-read, and I think it has some of Harrison’s greatest artwork.ย  It’s like he reached into my mind and created what I was seeing!ย  I don’t know how he does it, but he did it.ย  What a way to wrap up the Squirrel Saga – full circle!ย  Hard to believe that a goofy gimmick I cooked up over a year ago (Tee Bone vs. nature, and nature manifesting as a pesky little squirrel) turned into an entire saga of connected stories.ย  I enjoyed playing with Tee Bone’s sanity, and that little rodent absolutely destroyed him!ย  It was so fun to write.

It was Harrison that named the squirrel “Ripper” and envisioned him as a new friend and ally for Moustachio.ย  He first hinted at this with a satchel full of acorns in Chapter Nine:ย  Castle Communications.ย  Did you catch that?ย  ย He even foreshadowed Ripper’s future importance in the story art for Chapter Seven:ย  The Revenge of Common Knowledge.ย  How many of you picked up on that?

In August 2022, I conceived of the Edie Van Heelin’ character, and then refined her with the California Girl over a series of prototypical stories.ย  At first, these were intended to take place in a standalone universe, but I quickly abandoned that idea and began plotting her eventual crossover with Tee Bone Man.ย  This was foreshadowed for the first time within the Tee Bone Man stories in Chapter Eleven:ย  A Tee Bone Man Christmas, when my character the Brainiac was brought home by a mysterious woman in rocket boots.ย  The rocket boots were always California Girl’s idea.ย  Given her real-life love of wild animals, it was only logical to have her super power be the ability to talk them.ย  Immediately, it made sense to use this as a way to wrap up the Squirrel Saga, and also to introduce the idea of crossovers for the upcoming Multiverse Saga we’re cooking up.

The Squirrel Saga took 15 months to fully unfold.ย  The elements we’re preparing for the Multiverse Saga are going to take even longer to play out.ย  Strap yourselves in, folks.ย  Things are about to get much, much bigger.

Harrison has been buying the Lego sets needed to create the upcoming artwork out of pocket.ย  I have also started buying parts to assist with the artwork.ย  If you want to help us fund these future Tee Bone Man stories, it sure would be cool if you bought a mug, sticker, shirt, magnet, or anything you prefer.ย  The link is below.ย  I’ll make sure Harrison gets his cut.

Writing these stories has been an amazing experience for so many reasons.ย  One, it is a privilege to bring in guys like John Snow, Aaron, and the 80s Metal Man and see what kind of stories they can cook up with these characters.ย  With Harrison at the table in stories and art, we have a pretty incredible group of guys here.ย  Each one has his own style.ย  And now Holen is at the table too, bringing in a noir slant from an alternate universe.ย  (Look for “Noirison”, part one, coming soon.)ย  Another reason I’m so lucky is the ability to express myself in a completely different way.ย  As you will see with some of the upcoming stories, I am writing with passion like never before!

But hopefully, also still fun.ย  Adventures with a rock and roll / heavy metal foundation are what I brought into Brett-Lore 34 years ago, and that’s what Tee Bone Man always will be at its core.ย  The things we are planning with the Multiverse Saga will shock, amaze, and amuse, all while delivering the mindblowing Lego art you’re used to.ย  We can’t wait for you to read it.ย  It all kicks off next month with Chapter Nineteen:ย  Shinzon – Origins!

I sincerely love everyone who has ever read a Tee Bone Man or Edie Van Heelin’ story.ย  Thank you for spending your time with us.

The Writer’s Room: Empty Room

The Writer’s Room: Empty Room

From the Adventures of Tee Bone Man & Edie Van Heelin’

Mike sat alone, the lights dimmed, head in hands.ย  How could things have been going so very well, and then suddenly, so very wrong?

He sincerely believed he had surrounded himself with some of the best talent and support there was.ย  He valued the always reliable Harrison, his co-writer and artist that they called the Mad Metal Man.ย  There was Snowman, 80s Metal Man, and Aaron all on his team.ย  The writer’s room had just expanded to include two new members by remote conference: Holen and the California Girl known as MarriedandHeels.ย  And now…

“I can’t believe she’s gone,” lamented Mike, staring at the blank screen in front of him.

His coffee had grown cold and his head ached from the strain.ย  Before him was a blank page with just a title.ย  “California Girls’s notes – The Adventures Of Edie Van Heelin'”.ย  A teardrop hit the page.ย  Mike suddenly and furiously balled up the sheet of paper and launched it into the waste bin.

“How did it go from so very right, to so terrible wrong, so fast?” he asked the empty room.ย  The room only echoed his question back at him.

They were such good friends.ย  They worked so well together.ย  Edie was Mike’s creation, but it was the California Girl who made the character come to life.ย  Without her input, the character lay flat on the page; no colour, no personality, no joy.

“No green peach tea…no watermelon honey…” sighed Mike.ย  He had no idea what she was drinking these days.ย  Those kinds of details couldn’t be made up.ย  They could only come from her.

Hunched over the table, uncontrollably, he began sobbing.

There was a knock at the door, and Harrison poked his Australian head in.

“I’m sorry to intrude,” whispered the well-coifed man.ย  “Is everything alright in here?”

Mike looked up, his eyes red, and Harrison knew that everything was not alright.ย  He took his seat at the table and let Mike talk.

Looking down at his hands, playing with his pen, he simply said “She’s gone.”

Harrison knew who he meant without asking.

“I’m sorry,” he said.ย  “I’m not much good at these kinds of situations, but you can talk to me if you like.”

Mike took a deep breath.ย  “There’s only so much I can say.ย  It’s not her fault.ย  On the surface it seemed our friendship was rock solid.ย  We worked really well together.ย  But we had an argument.ย  One that we can’t come back from…and now it’s over.”

“Are you alright?” asked Harrison.

“I will be,” sniffed Mike.ย  “Everything reminds me of her.ย  Literally everything…she’s on my clothes, she’s in my stories, she’s on a magnet on my fridge…she’s everywhere.ย  I can’t forget her or erase her.”

Harrison, always the practical one rather than emotional, posed the question on his mind.

“What does this mean for the future of our stories?” he asked.

Mike thought a moment.

“Well…Edie Van Heelin’…I can’t do Edie without her.ย  It would be like Paul Stanley trying to be Kiss without Gene.ย  I need my Gene.ย  I guess that’s it for Edie Van Heelin’.”

Harrison was sad to hear this.ย  “I’m sorry about that,” he said.ย  “I know how much you liked writing those stories.”

“I loved writing that character,” corrected Mike.ย  “I loved working with her on it, but that situation was not sustainable long-term.ย  It was simply never meant to last.”

“So what will we do?” asked Harrison.

“I know…I know…we have the big crossover with Tee Bone Man coming,” lamented Mike.ย  “The epic conclusion to the Squirrel Saga.ย  It has to go up as planned.ย  It’s the lynchpin.ย  It connects everything together.ย  And it was supposed to launch Edie as a new teammate for Tee Bone Man.ย  Now…”ย  Mike trailed off into silence.

Harrison let the room be silent a few moments.ย  Then he raised his followup question.

“Does this mean…Plan B?” he asked with concern.

Mike’s lips trembled a bit.

“I just finished writing Plan B,” he said with sad seriousness.ย  Plan B was an idea that he had, just in case everything went south.ย  His relationship with California Girl had become tense in recent days, and he was worried that something like this might occur.ย  Against his mightiest wishes, that eventuality has now transpired.ย  It was, sadly, inevitable.ย  “I wish I never got her involved in my creative life.ย  I feel so stupid,” he spat.

Harrison consoled him.ย  “Don’t say that,” he advised.ย  “You had some very good times, and wrote some great stories.ย  No matter what has happened now, the things you did were worth it.”

Mike wiped a tear away.ย  “You think so?ย  Bringing her into this now creates a mess we have to figure a way out of.”

Harrison pondered a moment.ย  “Do you mind if I read Plan B?”

“Go ahead,” said Mike, turning the monitor on, and pushing it in Harrison’s direction.ย  Harrison clasped the mouse and began reading.ย  Mike watched his eyes dart from line to line, registering shock, melancholy, excitement, and finally terrible sadness.ย  By the time Harrison had finished reading, he was visibly moved by the story.

After a pause, Harrison said with dead seriousness, “This is one of the best things you’ve ever written.ย  You can feel the emotions.ย  This will be very difficult to illustrate.”

“Had to be done,” said a somber Mike as he looked down.ย  “We needed to end Edie’s story as epic as it began.”

“I agree,” nodded Harrison.ย  “It’s too good not to post.ย  But how are you feeling?”

Mike took a while to answer.ย  “I’m heartbroken.ย  I’m in pain.ย  And I think that comes across in the story.”ย  He paused a moment longer.ย  “I always said that girl had a natural charisma that made people want to know her.ย  And look what that did to me.”

“All great artists must suffer for their art,” Harrison comforted.

“Bah!” said Mike with a smile.ย  “Nothing about my art is great.ย  But it made me feel good.ย  And that feeling is gone, for now.”

“I hope the feeling returns,” said a sincere Harrison.

“It will, one day,” responded Mike.ย  “Don’t get me wrong, my friend.ย  I don’t really regret anything with her, except the end.ย  There was hurt inflicted on both sides, but it’s not a competition, and I can’t go back and change it.ย  What’s done is done.ย  And I hope she’s OK, wherever she is, whatever she’s doing.ย  I just want her to be OK.ย  And hopefully she remembers me well.ย  I know I will remember her with sadness, but also fondly.”

“A lovely sentiment,” said Harrison, “and possibly a good note on which to end this meeting.ย  You need to get home, get rested, and recover.ย  Please do that.”

Mike nodded affirmative.ย  “I will do that, I promise.ย  I just need a few more moments alone.”

“Talk to you tomorrow,” said Harrison as he stood to exit.ย  He quietly closed the door as he left, whispering “May the Force be with you,” to his friend.

As the door clicked shut, Mike collapsed back into his chair and let the tears run down his face.ย  Alone in the writer’s room, Mike spoke to the California Girl as if she could hear him.

“I miss you, my friend,” he said.ย  “I probably always will.ย  The creative energy we shared…it was a rare gift.ย  It can never be duplicated.ย  But more important than that…you were my friend.ย  I wish we never fought.ย  I wish that argument never happened.ย  But it had to happen.ย  It couldn’t be avoided, and now I have to pick up the pieces and carry on without you.ย  You’ll be fine without me — you were fine before I came along, and will be long after I’m gone.ย  Me, I’ll always have a California sized hole in my heart.”

He stood, and made his way to the door.

“Goodbye, my California Girl,” he whispered.ย  And with that the room was empty again.

The Adventures of Edie Van Heelin’: Edie’s Winter Vacation (By Mike & @MarriedandHeels)

NOTES:ย  This story was written by myself and @MarriedandHeels, from January to April 2023.ย  Our last collaboration together, it was never finished.ย  I couldn’t let almost 3500 words go to waste, so I wrote the ending by myself (and you can tell).ย  It was an experimental new way of writing, and the story needed a lot more work to keep it focused and tight, but it is the most “true to life” of all our writing together.ย  Or, at least, it was, for a brief moment in time.

Edie’s story will continue in The Adventures of Tee Bone Man.ย  This is the final chapter of Edie’s solo adventures.

Mike was out in the frigid winter cold, loading bags and camping supplies into his vehicle.ย  His breath wafted in cold clouds in front of his face, and then dissipated into the ether.ย  He struggled lugging his supplies through the snow, but the sky was a gorgeous ice blue, and the sun’s rays warmed his whiskers.ย  But why would anyone be loading camping supplies in the dead of winter?

For the answer to that question, you’d have to ask Edie Van Heelin’.

Mike looked up to the sky, awaiting his superhero friend from California.ย  She should be rocketing here any moment now.ย  Mike’s wife Jen slowly began making her way outside to greet the hero as well, as she trudged through the slush.

“Got everything?” asked Jen as she tried not to fall.

“Careful sweety!” cautioned Mike as he steeled himself to catch her if she slipped.ย  Fortunately she didn’t.ย  “Yes…I think I have everything.ย  Including a 4 gig hard drive full of music.ย  I loaded up the complete collection’s of all Edie’s favourite artists.ย  We won’t be short of music.ย  We have food, a portable gas barbecue and stove, several extra changes of clothes…I sure hope I’m ready.”

Jen shaded her eyes as she looked up to the bright sky.ย  “Is that her now?”

Sure enough, it was!ย  Edie Van Heelin’s trademark rocket boots made a somewhat unique sound as she roared across the sky.ย  Her boots made contrails that now wound their way on a direct course.ย  Mike and Jen could see her waving as she slowed herself down, and came in for a gentle landing.

“Edie!” shouted Mike as he attempted to run across the parking lot to greet his friend.ย  She was carrying several bags of her own luggage — all Coach of course.ย  She was dressed head to toe in silver winter gear, including a new pair of winter rocket boots.ย  Her lips were even painted silver to match.ย  Mike nearly bowled her over with a hug.

“Great to see you Fanboy!” she Edie, returning the hug even harder.ย  “Hey Jen!” she waved.ย  “Are you sure you’re not coming with us?”

Jen got that dear-in-a-headlight look with the wide-open eyes that Mike adored so much.ย  She laughed.ย  “Me?ย  Camping in the snow?ย  No, I’ll be ordering coffee and Chinese food and watching the Leafs in my warm house.ย  You can have the tents for you and Mike!ย  Just make sure you don’t turn him into a Mike-sicle out there!”

“Oh, I can keep him warm, don’t worry,” winked Edie.ย  “Next time, how about you and I leave him at home and we go shoe shopping in California?”

Jen nodded yes emphatically.ย  “You have a deal.ย  Maybe we can catch a Sharks game.”

“Count on it!” smiled Edie.ย  She then turned to Mike.ย  “You ready, Fanboy?ย  As agreed:ย  no superhero-ing this weekend, but rocket boots are packed as an emergency measure.ย  Which we won’t need.ย  Let’s go!”

“Not yet!” stopped Mike.ย  “We have the most important decision of the whole trip still to make.ย  We can’t get the road trip started without the right music.ย  As you know, my usual rule is ‘driver always chooses’ but this is our first road trip together, and I thought I’d let you pick the first album of the drive.ย  I’ve already chosen the second record.”

“Kiss?” asked Edie.

Mike laughed.ย  “Of course Kiss!ย  But Kiss Unplugged.ย  You won’t hate this one so much.ย  So what’s your pick?ย  The only rule now is that whatever you pick, we play the full album.ย  I don’t skip tracks!”

Edie placed a silver-painted nail on her chin and thought.

“Bob Seger’s Greatest Hits.ย  Does that count?ย  I’m a fan of greatest hits.”

“Of course it counts!” gasped Mike.ย  “But I don’t skip songs…”

“Ugh I guess Iโ€™ll deal with ‘Old Time Rock and Roll’,” agreed a reluctant Edie.ย  But turn it up a bit during ‘Night Moves’.”

Mike smiled a wide smile.ย  “You got it!”ย  Then he thought to add, “I hope you don’t mind, but I tend to sing in the car…”

Edie raised a hot pink manicured hand.ย  “Stop right there, no need to explain, you’re speaking my language!ย  Let’s hit the road!”

With a hug and a kiss, Jen said goodbye, and Mike got in.ย  With bags packed, phones charged and a nice big tent waiting to be set up, Edie and Mike set off on their winter road trip.ย  The sun shone bright, promising a good drive.ย  Mike selected Seger’s Greatest Hits, track one, “Roll Me Away”.ย  And away they rolled.

Almost immediately the storytelling commence.

“So Edie,” began Mike, “As you know I worked at a Record Store.ย  My first Christmas, Christmas of ’94, this was a top seller.ย  And my boss had a big rule about ‘Old Time Rock and Roll’…”

“Let me guess,” interrupted Edie.ย  “He made you skip it every time because he hated that song.”

Mike yelped in surprised laughter. “He made us skip it every time because he hated it!ย  You got it.ย  And you know how I feel about skipping.”

Suddenly track two, “Night Moves”, came on, and the pair happily harmonized.

“Workin’ on our night moves! Tryin’ to make some front page drive-in news!ย  Workin’ on our night moves!ย  In the summertime…”

“Man, I miss summer,” said Mike.

Edie sympathized.ย  “I know Mike, but we’re going to have so much fun this weekend.ย  Know what I’m looking forward to the most?”

“Tell me!” asked Mike with excitement in his voice.

“Winter hiking!” answered Edie.ย  “Hiking in the snow!ย  Snowshoeing!ย  Did you remember our micro spikes for the ice?ย  I want to see the trees capped in snow! Untouched snow!ย  A winter paradise!ย  The quiet of the forest dressed in white!ย  I want to take a step and fall waist deep into soft powder!ย  I want to fall back, arms open and be caught by soft snow!ย  I want to feel the cold and peace all around me!ย  I want to see a stream cutting through the snowy paradise! I want to hear the sound of the gentle waters moving!”

“Quite the wishlist,” responded Mike.ย  “I didn’t bring any spikes – we won’t need that where we’re going – but I can guarantee everything else is on the agenda.ย  It’s so fun seeing winter through your eyes.ย  Wait until you see the forest in the winter!ย  We used to get snowbanks so high, we could climb on the roofs and sled all the way down!”

Edie’s eyes went wide.ย  “Oooh!ย  I want to do that too!”

“Well, we should have plenty of time, since we agreed we’re not doing any superhero-ing this weekend,” said Mike.ย  He laughed.ย  “It’s funny – a few years ago, I would have done anything to go superhero-ing!ย  And I would have done anything to avoid the winter!ย  Now here we are looking forward to a winter vacation without any superhero shenanigans.ย  Who woulda thunk it?”

Edie interrupted his philosophising.ย  “Look!ย  Maple syrup!ย  We have to stop!”

“My pleasure, ma’am!” said Mike as he signalled to pull over.ย  “What are you looking to get?ย  Light, dark, anything specific?ย  Ooh look – they have pepperoni and beef jerky too.”

Edie shot up in her seat before she could even get the seatbelt off.ย  “Umm, hello!ย  Beef jerky!”

The pair stocked up on treats and supplies, while the Mennonites stared at Edie’s boots.ย  As she selected the finest beef jerky on offer, the Mennonites in black surreptitiously stole glances at her footwear.ย  If the inch-and-a-half high platforms didn’t stun them, perhaps the chunky five-and-a-half inch heels did.ย  Patent leather, thigh-high and perfect for the snow or ice.

“We’ll take these,” said Mike as he placed a pile of jerky and several bottles of syrup on the table.

“What are you folks up to today?” asked the older gentleman who took Mike’s money.

“Well, my friend here is from California and she’s not used to these kinds of winters.ย  We’re going to do some winter camping, showshoeing, maybe even build a snowfort if there’s time!” answered Mike with glee.

“Be careful out there,” warned the old man.ย  “I can feel it in my bones, there’s a storm coming.ย  A big one, if I’m not mistaken.ย  Make sure you have plenty of fuel and food!” he advised.

Without hesitation, Edie grabbed five more packs of jerky.ย  “Just to be on the safe side,” she winked.

Once they were back on the road, Edie noticed Mike was unusually quiet.ย  “Hey,” she nudged him.ย  “You OK?”

Mike nodded.ย  “I’m OK, just a little rattled about the weather.ย  Sometimes those old timers get it right when the weatherman didn’t.ย  If a snowstorm rolls in, it’ll be hard to dig the car out.”

“Don’t worry my friend!” answered a chipper Edie.ย  “Rocket boots are packed in the back seat if we run into trouble!ย  Don’t worry, it’ll be fun!”

Mike loosened up.ย  “You’re right, of course.ย  We’re winter camping, we need snow anyway.”

Before long, Lake Huron was in sight.ย  They had arrived!ย  The snow was crispy, deep, untouched.ย  It was so deep that they were unable to drive all the way.ย  They parked far up on the road and walked down into the treeline.

“This spot is perfect!” said Edie as she twirled in the snow.ย  Then, she spread her arms wide, dropped down into the snow, and was soon encapsulated in powder, laughing the whole time.”

“You OK Edie?” asked Mike as he trudged towards her.ย  He reached out to help her up, but she clasped his hand and pulled him right down!

“You sneak,” mumbled Mike as he spat snow from his mouth.ย  “Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m cold, so let’s get the tea going and put up the tent.”

“Good call,” said Edie as she got her solar kettle and accessories ready.ย  “Today it’s green chai, and I thought it would be nice to try that brand new maple honey that we picked up today!”ย  Before too long, steam was pouring from the kettle and delightful smells were filling the forest.ย  But Edie was distracted and Mike sought some revenge.

THWACK!ย  A snowball pelted her in the back of the head as Mike snickered in glee.ย  He tried to run away but the snow was far too deep.ย  He tripped and was buried in the deep snow.ย  He sank deeper as he struggled to get up, laughing the whole time.ย  Edie trudged in his direction and pulled him up.

“Serves you right!” said she.ย  Mike had to agree.

The two sat down to tea and indulged in some happy conversation as they set up the tent.ย  Mike trudged through the snow towards the car.ย  They had unpacked a few essentials – the bags, the tent, the solar kettle – but most of their camping gear was still inside.ย  Mike fumbled through this pockets, but suddenly, he had a serious problem.

“Ummm…Edie…we have a serious problem.”

She was unphased.ย  “What’s wrong?”

“I lost the keys,” Mike answered glumly.ย  “They must have fallen into the snow.ย  The rest of our equipment, including your rocket boots, are in the car.ย  Aww, crap…my phone is in the car!”

Edie checked her pockets.ย  “Oh no…mine too.”

Mike held back a tirade of F-bombs. He threw his Canadian toque into the snow in frustration. “I can’t believe this! Now we’re stuck out here with no phones, no rocket boots, and all our equipment is in the car!”

Suddenly Mike felt the cold smack of a snowball to the side of his head.ย  He looked towards Edie.

“You had to pay for hitting me with a snowball in the back of my headโ€ฆmy perfectly straightened hair will get wet and start to wave now!”ย  She laughed as Mike wiped the snow from his face.

“I like you with wavy hair,” answered Mike.ย  “But what about the keys?”

Edie placed a finger on her chin and pondered.

“I say we continue as planned.ย  We have everything we need, and I can recruit my Canadian squirrel friends to help find the keys.”

Mike shrugged.ย  “If you say so, but that’s a lot of snow for them to dig through.”

“Hey,” said Edie.ย  “These are Canadian squirrels, the hardiest I’ve ever seen!ย  They’ve got this!”ย  Edie raised her arms to the trees and called.ย  “Canadian squirrels!ย  To my side!”

Nothing happened.ย  A wind began to whip through the branches, but no squirrels came.ย  Edie repeated her command, but the animals were silent.

“It’s the storm.ย  All the squirrels gave gone to ground.ย  There’s a blizzard coming.ย  I suggest we reinforce the tent with snow blocks, to help keep the wind off,” said Mike grimly.

Edie nodded in agreement.ย  The two began digging up and packing large blocks of snow into a wall on the west side of the tent, where the wind would be coming in hard.ย  They were unusually silent as they worked, for as upbeat as Edie was on the exterior, inside she knew they had to take this seriously.

Mike felt the silence and decided to sing.

“I get up!ย  And nothin’ gets me down.ย  You got it tough? I’ve seen the toughest around!”

Edie looked up and sang along.

“And I know!ย  Baby, just how you feel!ย  You got to ro-o-oll with the punches and get to what’s real!”

“Might as well jump!” exclaimed Mike as he leapt atop the wall they were constructing.ย  “This is pretty good Edie!ย  It’s solid.”ย  He looked up through the trees.ย  “Sky is turning really ugly though.ย  It’s going to be black out soon, and the wind is picking up.”

“Let’s get inside and eat,” suggested Edie.

“Barbecue chicken a-la Mike,” responded her friend.

“Isn’t it too snowy to barbecue?” asked Edie.

“This?ย  Not in Canada.ย  In Canada this is a minor annoyance.ย  Fortunately we unpacked the cooler and grill…priorities!” answered Mike.

Everything was prepared in advance.ย  The chicken had been marinating for hours in a local Guelph BBQ sauced called Silver Bullet.ย  The veggies were chopped and buttered.ย  With the flick of a Bic, soon Mike had his grill fiery hot.ย  He carefully turned the pieces, caramelising the sauce and skin together into one crispy layer of delicious.ย  He then plated the delicious food with the care of a gourmet, even as the snow glistened on his beard.

Inside the tent, Edie had arranged things for comfort and practicality.ย  She had the tea at the ready, and something else too.ย  Mike looked down at his seat and found an ice-cold Coca Cola with Coffee – Dark Roast.

“What’s this??” asked Mike as he took his seat.

“A surprise,” answered Edie.

“I had actually planned on going soda-free this vacation, Edie…but thank you.ย  This will taste great with the chicken!”

“Everyone deserves a treat now and then, drink up and enjoy!” smiled Edie.

“I got you something, too,” said Mike,ย  “Here, put it on.”ย  He handed Edie her very own Canadian toque.

“A beanie with the Canadian Leaf on it!!” she said excitedly.

“It’s a toque, but put it on!ย  We’re not eating until you’re properly dressed!” prompted Mike.ย  Edie eagerly placed the knit cap over her head and smiled a huge grin.

“I love it!” grinned Edie.ย  Mike thought she fit right in now.ย  Heย picked up his plate, but Edie stopped him.

“Wait…let’s say grace this time,” she said.

Mike listened to the storm beginning to whip around them, and nodded in agreement.ย ย Edie said a few words of thanks.

Moments later, they were fingers-deep into the chicken, with barbecue sauce lingering on the lips and laughter in the air.

The wind continued to whip around them, playing their tent like a drum.ย  Edie looked concerned, but Mike reminded her that they reinforced the structure with blocks of snow for this just exact reason.ย  Mike scooched over next to her.

“It’s so loud!” said Edie.

“Imagine if we were out in the clear, without the trees to shelter us!ย  Like those old boys in the Antarctic over 100 years ago…just them in their tents and nobody else on the whole continent.ย  They were out of food and out of fuel…we have both!ย  We just need to stay warm.”

“I don’t think the animals are looking for your keys anymore,” said Edie solemnly.

“Can you blame ’em?” asked Mike with a chuckle.ย  Edie shook her head with an emphatic “No!”

The dark was well upon them now, and the two sat up, leaning in on each other for warmth, telling stories and jokes until Edie fell asleep right there on Mike’s shoulder.

When he realized she wasn’t laughing at his hilarious jokes anymore, Mike gently moved Edie down to her foam mattress, and covered her with her sleeping bag.

“Sweet dreams, Edie Van Heelin’, and may the sun come out tomorrow,” said Mike and he tucked her in.

Outside, the wind cast doubt.ย  In Canadian winter, there is never a guarantee the sun will be out tomorrow.

Smiling in her beanie, Edie drifted off.ย  Mike was slow to slumber.ย  He saw Edie snoring peacefully, her breath puffing clouds in the cold air, and he wondered, “What is she dreaming of right now?”

In her mind, she was communing with a large family of wolves.ย  Wait…no…the picture was getting clearer in her sleep.ย  She was building an igloo…fortifying it like a snow fort…when suddenly her work was interrupted by arctic wolves so large, she could ride upon them.ย  There was a mother and father wolf, and two cubs, white and grey with eyes as sharp as ebony darts.ย  But they were friendly, and the mother wolf lay down on the ground so Edie could climb on.

Mike drifted off to sleep.ย  As he took his first big snore, he somehow joined Edie in her dream.ย  She motioned to him, “climb on,” and so he did.ย  The father wolf was laying in the snow waiting.ย  Instinctively, and not knowing how to ride a giant horse-sized wolf, he climbed on.ย  Then, like steel springs suddenly triggered, the wolves took off!ย  In their dreams, Mike and Edie hung on securely to their mounts and caught the snowflakes that flew into their faces, directly on the tongue.

“I’ve always wanted to do this!” screamed Edie in glee.

Mike turned and stared.ย  “You’ve always wanted to ride a giant arctic wolf, in the snow?”

“Yeah!” screamed Edie.ย  “Haven’t you?”

“No,” answered Mike, “It never occurred to me.ย  And also, this must be your dream and not mine, because even I know that we don’t have arctic wolves down here!”

The pair laughed as they rode….

Hours passed.ย  As they slumbered peacefully away, outside the tent, the snow had continued to fall.ย  Accumulating rapidly, the tent was all but buried by the first rays of the new day.

It was Edie who woke first, in near-total dark, thanks to the layers of snow now around and above them.

She shook Mike on the shoulder.ย  “Mike!ย  Mike!ย  Wake up!ย  We have a problem.”

Groggily, her Canadian companion slowly opened his sleep-crusted eyes and yawned.

“Edie, I had the weirdest dream…”

“Never mind that Mike.ย  I have some good news and some bad news,” swallowed Edie.

“Give me the bad news first,” moaned Mike.

Edie gestured around the tent and said, “We appear to be almost completely buried.”

Mike groaned some more.ย  “Well, my back is at least partially mobile today.ย  Looks like digging is in our future.ย  What’s the good news?”

Edie smiled.ย  “I brought a special tea for breakfast!”

Groaning again, Mike drank some sort of strange watermelon tea concoction, and began shoveling.

“Never again!” he moaned as he dug.ย  “Never again am I going winter camping!”

Edie laughed, grabbed and shovel, and joked, “Oh yes you will!”

The morning turned into midday, and Mike had had enough of snow, winter, and all of it!ย  In a grumpy mood, he trudged off alone, heading towards the nearest town, and a tow truck.ย  Back at camp, Edie took some pictures and made some snow angels, waiting for the tow truck to eventually arrive.ย  But what did arrive took her completely by surprise.

A family of giant wolves were sniffing around the treeline.ย  Just like in her dream.ย  The mother wolf approached, beckoned her to climb on, and leaned down so Edie could ride.ย  Wordlessly, she did just that.ย  With a flash, they were off.

“Canadian wolves!ย  Into town to meet up with Fanboy Mike!”ย  The wolf pack darted forward in the snow, with a gleeful Edie singing Bob Seger songs as the wind whipped her hair.

Mike was seated at a local garage, drinking a coffee, and waiting for the tow truck to return from its last call.ย  He was sore all over from that hike.ย  He was all but falling asleep with the newspaper opened in front of him.ย  Ironically, it was the entertainment section, and there was even an article about Edie’s upcoming album being produced by Wolfgang Van Halen.

As if on cue, Edie Van Heelin’ pranced through the doors.

“Miss me?” she asked?

Mike gasped.ย  “How the heck did you get here so quickly, without rocket boots?”

Edie grinned.ย  “Why, I rode on the back of a giant mother wolf, of course!”

The garage attendant standing behind the counter choked on his coffee a bit, and regained his composure.ย  “The hell you say?” he asked astonished.

“Don’t be surprised,” said a bemused Mike.ย  “That’s Edie Van Heelin’.ย  She can talk to animals.”

“I’m not talking about that,” said the grease monkey.ย  “Giant mother wolf?ย  Is that what you said?”ย ย Edie nodded affirmative.ย  “Lady…you just had a close encounter with the unexplained!”ย  He took a minute to regain his composure.ย  “There’s a legend around here, going back 200 years, or even more.ย  Reports of a pack of giant arctic wolves, not afraid, not aggressive…friendly.ย  They show up out of nowhere in the winter, when people are in dire need.ย  They don’t leave footprints in the snow.ย  They don’t leave scat on the ground.ย  There are no physical traces left behind.ย  Ever.ย  Show me where the wolves dropped you off.”

The three ran outside to the road.

“It was right here!” said Edie.ย  “But I don’t….”

“…See any paw prints…” finished Mike.

After some moments of puzzled silence, Mike spoke again. “‘Fantasy is the impossible made probable. Science Fiction is the improbable made possible.’ Rod Serling said that.ย  But this…this is something other.ย  We have truly entered the Twilight Zone.”

As if on cue, the grease monkey’s phone rang…with the Twilight Zone theme music.

“Let’s go home,” said Mike.ย  “This has been the weirdest vacation ever!”

With that, the pair hopped into the tow truck that had just arrived, and silently pondered the mysteries of the unknown.

The Adventures of Tee Bone Man: A Crazy Crazy Night – Part 3 (By Harrison Kopp)

The Adventures of Tee Bone Man – Phase One: The Squirrel Saga
Chapter 16:ย  A Crazy Crazy Night (Part 3)

This is it. Tee Bone Man. Superdekes. The Snowman. El Moustachio. The four heroes have fought their way through Wicked Lester Blackwellโ€™s Carnival of Lost Souls and now face their greatest challenge: Stop Mr Blackwell himself before he can gain untold power. But standing in-between our heroes and the megalomaniac is the Psycho Circus, and itโ€™s a full house tonight.

Tee Bone confidently strode forward towards the entrance to the Psycho Circus, but he was pulled back by Deke.

โ€œSurely we need some sort of plan for this?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right, but donโ€™t call me Shirley.โ€, Tee Bone smiled back. โ€œSo how are we approaching this?โ€

Deke thought for a moment.

โ€œSnowman, can I see the map a second?โ€

The Snowman obliged, and Deke studied what layout information the map gave him of the building that housed the Psycho Circus.

โ€œAlright. Weโ€™ll sneak in through the service entrances here and here. Two of us will continue up to the oratorโ€™s booth here. I bet thatโ€™s where Lester will be. The other two will go down into the ring here and engage whatever thugs he has. It will draw his attention too while the stealthy team get into position.โ€

The others considered this for a moment.

โ€œWeโ€™ll need Tee Bone in the middle there then. Thatโ€™s where the thick of it is going to be.โ€, El Moustachio chimed in.

โ€œYesโ€, Deke replied. โ€œAnd my grappling hook makes me ideal to go up high. So that just leaves which two of you is better with heights.โ€

The Snowman and El Moustachio looked at each other.

โ€œIโ€™ll go with Deke.โ€, The Snowman said. โ€œIโ€™ve got some ranged weaponry thatโ€™ll work better from up high.โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t argue with that.โ€, the Australian replied.

With that settled, the two groups confidently strode forwards towards their respective service entrances. Entering was easy, and once they were in the chanting and cheering was louder than ever, which actually came in handy in masking the sounds of our heroes dispatching any guards stationed around the place.

So it wasnโ€™t long before both squads caught sight of the task before them. And it wasnโ€™t going to be easy. The building was essentially one large arena. A giant ring of seats surrounded a large open area in the centre, with scaffolding and support platforms littering the outer ring and the higher levels.

And there, high up and right where Deke said heโ€™d be, was Wicked Lester Blackwell. His suit was torn in places and his top hat was similarly afflicted. He was old and weathered, much like the Carnival itself, but he still radiated a sinister and dangerous aura.

Perched atop a platform illuminated by spotlights he conducted the crowd below, whipping them into a fever pitch.

โ€œBrothers! Sisters! Freaks! Monsters! Iโ€™ve been waiting for this night to come! Today we are reborn! Exiled from the human race no more! While the city sleeps, we have been digging down towards the well of souls buried beneath this very circus. The mining is almost complete. We are moments away from untold power! The carnival has just begun! And soon we will return to the world- forever!โ€

The crowd cheered, and it was at this moment that Tee Bone decided enough was enough. He strode out into the centre of the arena and struck a power chord that echoed around the room for several seconds. The crowd went completely silent.

โ€œWho dares!โ€, Wicked Lester roared furiously. โ€œI will not have this night marred by anyone! Let alone someone so unholy as you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve had enough of this posturing and these proxies. Come and face me, right here, right now! Iโ€™ll fight hell to hold you back!โ€, Tee Bone yelled back.

โ€œHahaha, hereโ€™s your chance, foolish one. Come, my faithful, let us indulge in some excitement.โ€, Lester boomed back, as countless psychopaths and cultists; human, almost human or otherwise charged forward into the arena towards Tee Bone and El Moustachio.

โ€œShow themโ€ฆ a world without heroes!โ€, he crowed from above, as all hell began to break loose in the arena.

And Tee Bone and El Moustachio were at the centre of it. The hooligans and delinquents were no trouble alone, but together with the seasoned killers they posed a bit more of a threat. El Moustachio was constantly watching his back, while Tee Bone did his best to keep the fighting focused on him. It wasnโ€™t a million to one, but they were definitely outnumbered.

To make matters worse, Wicked Lester was not giving up any opportunities to display his showmanship and had now taken to hyping the crowd up like a sports announcer.

โ€œHere comes the Torpedo Girl! Look out boys, sheโ€™s got a heart of chrome and sheโ€™s equipped with as much ballistics as she is ballast!โ€

The woman in question responded with a volley of torpedo shots that our two heroes just barely avoided. They lodged into the ground and bore deep holes down. One foot wrong and El Moustachio would be in for a long drop off a short pier.

Wicked Lester continued above.

โ€œAnd donโ€™t forget Little Ceaser! He really puts the โ€˜Xโ€™ in โ€˜sectsโ€™!โ€

A very short man with a wreath on his head emerged and began ordering the droves of psychos into regimented battalions. This was going to be a problem.

Up above on the service walkways, Deke and The Snowman were also engaged in battle. Thereโ€™d been more people up here than theyโ€™d initially banked on, and theyโ€™d been spotted about halfway up to Mr Blackwell.

โ€œSaints! Sinners! To the gantries! More interlopers!โ€

โ€œBlast!โ€, The Snowman cursed.

A cadre of Lesterโ€™s men ran up to their level and unleashed a patchwork assault from all manner of makeshift ranged weaponry. Their firearms were rudimentary, but they were certainly functional, and they forced the two heroes to take shelter behind a wall. For now, they were pinned down. Down, but not out.

At least down below Tee Bone and El Moustachio were beginning to make some headway. The phalanxes had been scattered after a well-placed boomerang, courtesy of Tee Bone actually, had knocked little Caesar out.

Torpedo Girl, meanwhile, was taking a bit more effort to topple. Tee Bone Man had to take a dive to dodge her last volley of shots, and heโ€™d copped a boot to the face while he was down there. The culprit was summarily pounded upon Tee Boneโ€™s return to an erect walking position.

El Moustachio, meanwhile, had worked to put as many cultists as possible between him and her. This, of course, put him within punching distance of said cultists. But this didnโ€™t bother him too much; it also put them within punching distance of him. Plus he had Ripper on his side.

In short, other than the problematic-projectile woman, they were prevailing. Well actually the correct way of saying it was that they had been prevailing, because it was just when Tee Bone and El Moustachio seemed to have the upper hand that a great rumbling sound filled the room.

And it was at this point that, despite their victories in the preceding battle, the two heroes realised that they had been manoeuvred far away from each other. The rumbling got louder and louder and the ground in the middle of the arena began to fall away.

โ€œAnd on the eighth day!โ€, Wicked Lester cried above as the ground continued to crumble away far beneath him. โ€œOut of the ashes came the dawn and the shape of things to come!โ€

Too far from his partner to help, Tee Bone took off heading straight for Wicked Lester, fist outstretched. His flightpath, however, was intercepted by a well-placed firework that sent him spinning down onto one of the gantries.

Meanwhile, down on the other side of the arena, El Moustachio ran for one of the scaffolding towers. The ground cracked under his feet, and he saw chunks fall away around him as he ran. With a final, desperate leap he was just able to reach the tower as the entire arena floor fell away into the void. But he wasnโ€™t safe yet.

The cracks continued outwards, and the scaffolding he was clinging to began to break loose. This was fairly alarming, and the Australian tried to hasten his ascent. But it was no use, it was too far to the top.

Ripper clambered up ahead of him and desperately began pulling on his finger.

โ€œNo use buddyโ€, the Australian smiled gently. โ€œGo up there and help the others, ok?โ€.

The squirrel was vehemently against at the idea of leaving the Australian to his fate.

โ€œIโ€™ll be fineโ€, Moustachio said with a wry smile. โ€œThey need you more.โ€

And, not taking no for an answer, El Moustachio grabbed the small ball of fur and hurled him high up to safety. He knew he could count on the little guy. Mere seconds later he was falling backwards towards the green pit as the scaffolding beneath him completely collapsed.

Enveloped by a tawny-coloured explosion on his way down, the Australian vanished without a trace.

โ€œNoooooooooo!โ€, Tee Bone cried from above, more rage in his voice than he had ever mustered before. Wicked Lester was going to pay, if it was the last thing he did.

Up above, largely oblivious to the proceedings below, Deke and The Snowman were ready to make their move. Their overconfident assailants had moved in towards where they were taking cover, which was right where The Snowman wanted them.

He tossed a little round device over his shoulder and it landed with a clink at the feet of the huddle. Seconds later it exploded in a shower of snow and hail and all the attackers were encased in prisons of ice.

โ€œNice work on thatโ€, Deke admired. โ€œI gotta find out how you packed so much in that little casing.โ€

โ€œMaybe after this Iโ€™ll let you in on the secret ingredientโ€, The Snowman replied as the two men ran up a flight of stairs.

Down below Tee Bone was rapidly approaching the top level, pounding anyone in his way. But his anger might not be enough. Wicked Lester had begun absorbing the spirit energy from the pit and was growing more and more dangerous by the minute. Closing his eyes and sucking in a long breath, he proclaimed his superiority for the 100,000th time this year.

โ€œIโ€™m a legend tonight!โ€

With a green glow in his eyes, the madman fired a verdant blast of energy that missed Tee Bone by an inch, scorching the metal pylon beside him.

Tee Boneโ€™s hit back hard and fast, but the return volley of power chords failed to strike home. Lester cackled as Tee Bone took cover.

Then great big cracks appeared across the ceiling, as chunks of it began to fall down around the arena. But this was not the work of Wicked Lester. Something was forcing its way through the roof. Something big.

And then Tee Bone saw it. Huge and silver. It looked like the Destroyer, but Thor wasnโ€™t here. Reaching into the building it fired a powerful blast into a gantry containing reinforcements for Blackwell. The blast rocked the entire building as the would-be attackers fell a long way down into the void below.

Lester did not take too kindly to this intrusion and readied a blast of his own. Sickly green energy swirled around his fist, but before he could fire, a grappling hook wrapped itself around his wrist.

Deke pulled hard on the rope and Lesterโ€™s shot went wide. The elder man attempted to spin around to face the source of this insult, but his left leg was suddenly encased in a thick layer of ice courtesy of The Snowman.

His other leg was kept in place by Tee Boneโ€™s lariat, and upon discovering this, Lester let loose a feral growl. This growl soon turned to a scream of pain as Ripper jumped on his face and sunk his claws into the older manโ€™s flesh.

Essentially paralysed, Wicked Lester Blackwell could only stand there as the mechanical marvel readied both its arm cannons and took aim. Ripper vacated the manโ€™s face with just enough time for him to comprehend the full scope of the firepower about slam itself into him.

And then the machine fired, sending Lester hurtling down towards the well of souls below. He momentarily disappeared beneath the surface but quickly began to furiously claw his way back out.

But only for a moment. Ghostly hands reached up and dragged him back down into somewhere between heaven and hell.

And much like the cauldron in Infernum Keep all that time ago, this green repository of evil did not take kindly to the powerful foreign object that had forcefully inserted itself into it. It writhed and hissed as the ground all around the island began to shake.

โ€œI think weโ€™re done hereโ€, Deke said.

โ€œAgreedโ€, Tee Bone said, grabbing his friend and flying upwards. He looked around for the other heroes but found that it was taken care of.

โ€œWhereโ€™s El Moustachio?โ€, the Snowman asked.

โ€œHe didnโ€™t make it out of the pitโ€, Tee Bone grimly replied.

The Snowmanโ€™s face fell. But they couldnโ€™t allow themselves to get caught up with grief. Time was running out to vacate the area. The mechanical saviour above extended its arms into the building and spoke for the first time in a booming robotic, but familiar, voice.

โ€œClimb on!โ€

The Snowman did not need to be asked twice, clambering up onto one of the two large cannons on the end of the mechโ€™s upper appendages.

And not a moment too soon, as the majority of the now-abandoned Psycho Circus broke away and fell into the void of death. The rest of the ground began to follow suit, as anything solid began to sink beneath the waves along with the portal to the Cthulu-knows-where.

But the escape from the island turned out to be quite uneventful. Those manning the firework towers earlier were now far more concerned with leaving the sinking land mass they now found themselves on. The flying mech made a brief detour to pick up Dekeโ€™s bike and they were on their way out in no time at all.

Our heroes flew to a nearby island to catch their breath for a minute.

โ€œThat was intense.โ€ Deke said.

โ€œYeah, weโ€™re going to need quite the vacation to relax after thatโ€, Tee Bone replied.

The Snowman was about to chime in about needing one too, but everyoneโ€™s attention was captured by the large machine with them. Hissing as steam erupted from several places, it gently set itself down, before the chest cavity opened up and a ramp extended.

And who should walk out but none other than The Braniac.

โ€œOf course! Who else!?โ€, Tee Bone smiled.

โ€œI say, itโ€™s great to be on the hero side of things now, rather than being the one rescuedโ€, The Braniac smiled back.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t have it any other wayโ€, Tee Bone replied, clasping his hand in The Braniacโ€™s in a firm handshake. โ€œYou were amazing out there.โ€

He then motioned towards the silver mech.

โ€œThis thing is loaded!โ€

โ€œOh yeah, this thing hits like an 18-wheeler. Let me show you.โ€

The Braniac got back into the machine and fired it up. Turning his arm cannons to the sinking island, he unleashed a volley of armaments

โ€œWoahโ€, Deke exclaimed. โ€œI canโ€™t wait to find out how you made that thing.โ€

โ€œSo what do you call it?โ€, Tee Bone asked.

The Braniac smiled.

โ€œI call it the Large Ordnance Outlayer Featuring Assisting Human.โ€

โ€œHaha, thatโ€™s quite a nameโ€, Deke laughed.

A short silence followed, and our heroesโ€™ attention then turned to their fallen comrade.

โ€œDo you think heโ€™s gone forever?โ€, The Snowman gently asked.

โ€œNo.โ€, Tee Bone firmly replied. โ€œWeโ€™ll get him back. Even if we have to go to Hell and rip him from the jaws of the devil himself, weโ€™ll get him back.โ€

Everyone nodded solemnly. Then the ashes of the once-intact Carnival of Souls began to blow over, like glitter in the air.

โ€œWeโ€™d better get going.โ€, Deke stated.

โ€œYeahโ€, Tee Bone agreed. โ€œAre you good to get back?โ€, he asked The Snowman.

โ€œIโ€™ll get him home.โ€ The Braniac said from his mech. โ€œClimb aboard man.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll work together again. Iโ€™ll make sure of it.โ€ Tee Bone called out, as the group parted ways.

Deke and Tee Bone immediately headed Northwest, whereas The Braniac dropped The Snowman off before heading back to Canada.

When the Thunder Bay duo got back to Dekeโ€™s Palace they found a familiar face waiting for them. He saw them land and ran over, totally jubilant.

โ€œYou did it!โ€, Mr Books exclaimed, having come all the way from Owen Sound to welcome back our heroes.

โ€œWe didโ€, Tee Bone replied. โ€œWith a little help from our friends.โ€

โ€œSo I heard. Forgive me for foisting such a daunting quest on you, but I knew you were up to the task.โ€

โ€œYou wanted the best, you got the best.โ€, Tee Bone smiled.

โ€œThat I didโ€, Mr Books replied, toasting the heroesโ€™ success and taking a drink of Scotch.

And many more followed as the sun rose over Thunder Bay once again, the future looking just a bit brighter.

Someone, somewhere, sometime, somehow…

El Moustachio appeared out of thin air and hit the ground with a wet thud, rolling twice before coming to a gentle rest. He gingerly picked himself up and observed his strange new surroundings. He knew he wasnโ€™t in Hell because heโ€™d been there before and it was a lot more red. In fact, the world he now found himself was actually really green. He was in a city, but there was more plant life here than heโ€™d ever seen before. Thick vines snaked up the buildings, and the ground was more like sodden earth than concrete.

But all through it all there was something familiar. A scent he was very used to, but stronger than heโ€™d ever smelt it before. Even stronger than the aroma of the small item he still carried in his back pocket. And it was only getting stronger.

El Moustachio stepped out of the alleyway into the city. The cool night was dimly lit by the bioluminescent plants around him. In the distance he spied a figure, and a low rumble filled the air. Suddenly he realised just how alone he was.

The figure took a step forward. And then another.

El Moustachio took a step back and steeled himself.

One way or another, things were never going to be the same again.

Chapter 16:ย  A Crazy Crazy Night (Part 2)

Heading to the haunted fairgrounds of Wicked Lester with the intention of stopping his unholy ritual for unleashing untold power on the Earth, Tee Bone Man and Superdekes were separated and now find themselves faced with greater challenges. But neither of them is alone in this.

In the now ordinary Hall of Mirrors, El Moustachio was faced with the need to reawaken the unconscious Tee Bone Man, who had inexplicably fainted only minutes earlier. Luckily, he had just the item for this task. Reaching into his pocket for his smelling cabbage, he held it up to Tee Boneโ€™s nose.

Despite the mask the superhero was wearing, the effect was immediate.ย  His eyes opened and he sat right up.

โ€œOh, my head.โ€, he groaned, rubbing his temples.ย  โ€œOh that was unpleasantโ€, he continued. Then he noticed the Australian in the room.

โ€œHang on, what are you doing here? Assuming youโ€™re real and even here in the first place.โ€, he asked.

โ€œIโ€™m real. And Iโ€™m here because I got a package from someone explaining the intended machinations of a Wicked Lester. I knew I had to act so I chartered a plane and parachuted in.โ€

โ€œThat explains the second round of fireworks. Tee Bone mused. Did you bring any backup?โ€

โ€œYes, as a matter of fact I di-โ€œ

It was at this moment, for the second time that day, Tee Bone came face to snout with a particular squirrel.

โ€œAh!โ€ he screamed, jumping backwards.

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™m sensing you have some history with my friend hereโ€, El Moustachio said.

“History?” exclaimed a suddenly manic Tee Bone.ย  “You don’t know anything about that beast you’re dealing with.ย  What it’s capable of.ย  You need to hand it over to me, now.”

“Hand Ripper over?ย  Why?” asked the now frightened Australian, who picked up the squirrel and cradled it in his arms.

“You named it?ย  You named it…Ripper?ย  Well, I’ll give you one thing, you picked an appropriate name.ย  Now…my friend…please…ย  Hand.ย  It.ย  Over.”

The Australian man pleaded with his eyes, and moustache.ย  “Please Tee Bone…just relax…breathe a moment.ย  Imagine you’re in the peace of quiet of your camp, and…”

“Camp?ย  …Camp?ย  …CAMP?” murmured Tee Bone in increasing volume.ย  “That god damned rodent…”

And that was it.ย  A triggered Tee Bone Man stood before them, a blaze in his eyes.ย  He was no longer himself.ย  He roared, a man possessed.ย  Ripper buried his head in Moustachio’s Australian shirt, taking comfort in the sweet smell of shampoo.ย  And then, unexpectedly, Tee Bone forcefully shoved Moustachio to the ground, seizing Ripper the squirrel, struggling in his mighty gloves.

“When lightning strikes!” cried Moustachio.ย  As fast as his Australian reflexes naturally were, they were no match for an insane Tee Bone Man powered by radioactive Scotch.

“Hate is what I am!ย  And underneath this heart, there beats the heart of man!” screamed the demented superhero.ย  Moustachio could only stand aside, mouth agape, as Tee Bone glowered in radioactive power.

Ripper spoke in squirrelese.ย  “Squee, squee, squee!”ย  Roughly translated:ย  “OK, fine.ย  You want a rematch?ย  I’m in.”

The only thing faster than an overdriven Tee Bone Man was a Canadian squirrel on the defensive.ย  In a split second, Ripper was on Tee Bone’s face, re-arranging his eyebrows with a fresh trim courtesy of his sharp claws.

“Squeeeeee!” cried Ripper.ย  Rough translation:ย  “I hope you don’t mind your new look!”ย  Tee Bone did indeed look a little different with only one eyebrow!

“You little bastard!” roared Tee Bone Man.ย  “I was far too kind, launching you to Australia last summer at camp!ย  But while Moustachio has been harbouring a beast of horrific terror…I’ve been practicing my new guitar!”ย  Quick as an old western fast-draw gunfigher, Tee Bone aimed his black stealth guitar right at Ripper and launched him 50 feet into the air with a sonic boom.

Ripper recovered quickly, and was suddenly racing back in Tee Bone’s direction.ย  Just as he was within range, Tee Bone kicked him away with a mighty boot.ย  The Canadian squirrel lay on the ground panting heavily.ย  Then, Tee Bone approached, ready to deliver the killing blow.ย  He cranked the volume knob on his guitar and aimed it at the defeated animal.

In a sudden blur, Moustachio placed his body directly on front of the guitar’s headstock.

“Tee Bone!ย  No!ย  Please!ย  He is my friend!ย  Do not hurt him…you’ll have to take me down first if you try.”

Tee Bone’s eyes suddenly changed.ย  They softened, and moisture could be seen glistening on his eyelid.ย  Slowly, he lowered his guitar and looked down at his Australian friend.ย  “Moustachio…why?ย  Why would you give your life for that…vile creature?”

Moustachio slowly approached and silently took Tee Bone’s guitar from his hands.ย  Tee Bone barely noticed.ย  He was coming back to himself again.

“Ripper is my friend!” explained the Australianย  “It turns out, he just loves a good heavy metal baritone.ย  He came to my window one afternoon when I was listening to Blaze Bayley’s Live In Poland album, and we became such good friends!ย  Well…I admit he was a little rough around the edges.ย  It took him three weeks to stop shitting on my pillow, but he’s housebroken now, and just the best friend you could ask for.ย  Please Tee Bone…do not hurt my friend.”

Tee Bone looked down, partly ashamed, but mostly relieved.

“I could never hurt your friend, Moustachio.ย  I feel…better.ย  I feel…free.”ย  He bent over to pick up Ripper, who was starting to recover from the battle.

“I’m sorry, Ripper.ย  Let’s start over.ย  Peace?”

“Squee!!” answered the little creature.ย  Rough translation:ย  “You got it, man!”

“Back to the business at hand?” asked a relieved Moustachio.

The two heroes then turned to the unconscious โ€˜demonโ€™ on the floor by them. And, curiously, he was looking noticeably less terrifying lying there. The combover and polo shirt werenโ€™t exactly in vogue over at Hot Gothic.

El Moustachio reached into the manโ€™s pocket and pulled out a business card.

โ€œSays his nameโ€™s Mr Make Believeโ€, the Australian hero read. โ€œExplains this whole place then. Nothing but fictional concoctions dreamt up by some clown with too much time on his hands.โ€

โ€œYeahโ€, Tee Bone hesitantly replied, not completely sure that the Australian was correct.

โ€œWell weโ€™d better get moving thenโ€, El Moustachio said, tossing the card aside. โ€œWeโ€™re looking for a place called the Psycho Circus, and this certainly isnโ€™t itโ€.

โ€œHow do you know where we need to be?โ€, Tee Bone quizzed him.

โ€œI read the documents sent with the letter on the flight over here.โ€, the Australian replied.

โ€œMakes sense. Well how are we getting out of here then?โ€ Tee Bone asked.

โ€œThat looks like a good betโ€, the El Moustachio replied, pointing to a neon green exit sign.

Tee Bone had no arguments with that, and the two men soon emerged into the cool night. The air was still, but both men knew that it wouldnโ€™t last. They pressed on, keeping a cautious eye over their shoulders.

Elsewhere, Deke had also revitalised his search of the fairgrounds. Having recently exited the Tunnel of Love via a large crack in the wall, he now also found himself somewhat lost for direction.

Then the sound of a door opening caught his attention. Turning his head, he saw that the source was a place called Rock And Roll Hell. But what surprised him more was the identity of the man who opened the door.

Because, confidently sauntering out of the attraction, was none other than The Snowman. Catching sight of Deke, he calmly walked over to him.

โ€œI must admit I that place doesnโ€™t really live up to the name. Too much like that one in Cleveland.โ€

โ€œI know the one.โ€ Deke replied slyly. โ€œItโ€™s good to see you again man.โ€

Deke extended his hand, and The Snowman shook it grinning.

โ€œItโ€™s been too long. After this is all over we gotta have a drink togetherโ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to hold you to thatโ€, Deke shot back.

โ€œGladly, but first we have a Mr Blackwell to stop. Any idea where he might be?โ€

โ€œYes, actually, kind of.โ€, Deke replied. โ€œI know where we need to be, but not where it is.โ€

โ€œWell I think I can help you with some of that. I snatched this map of the place out from under a vending machine I used to block a door. Itโ€™s a little soggy in places but it should do the trick.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s great!โ€, Deke exclaimed, and he rushed over to study the piece of paper.

โ€œWeโ€™re after a place called the Psycho Circusโ€, he muttered, scanning the pages. โ€œThere.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not too far.โ€, The Snowman said, looking at where Dekeโ€™s finger was pointed. โ€œWe could even cut through there.โ€, he continued on, pointing to a spot of his own.

โ€œBetter not.โ€, Deke replied. โ€œAfter what Iโ€™ve seen of this place, Iโ€™m not sure I want to be going into a place called Naked City.โ€

โ€œFair point.โ€, The Snowman conceded. โ€œShall we get going then?โ€

โ€œWe have to find Tee Bone first.โ€, Deke said.

โ€œBut if he doesnโ€™t even know where to go itโ€™s going to be hard to find him. What if we went to the Psycho Circus and then sent up a flare or something. Get him to come to us.โ€

Deke thought for a moment. That was a very good idea. โ€œYes, youโ€™re right. That will work.โ€

With that settled, the two men turned towards the direction of the Psycho Circus, before realising they were not alone.

In their vision now, perched on trees, lampposts and building tops, were countless creatures of the night. Mutant bugs, bats and all other sorts of foul creatures brought into being by toxic radioactive waste dumped on the island.

โ€œRun.โ€ Deke whispered to the American beside him.

The Snowman needed no invitation.

Elsewhere, Tee Bone and El Moustachio had already been introduced to the creatures of the night. Also recognising that they stood no chance in the open, the two had also run for cover.

And they seemed to have found it. The building they now stood in was tall and solidly built. It also, crucially, had most of its windows boarded up. Right now, the two men appeared to be in a kitchen of sorts and were scavenging for weapons and/or supplies.

El Moustachio didnโ€™t particularly care for the rusted knives and forks, but the fire axe by the door was most appealing.

Tee Bone, meanwhile, had picked up a jar of unknown foodstuffs, and was inspecting the contents. El Moustachio looked over and saw what it said on the label- Carr Jam (1981 Recipe). Best Before: 1992.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t eat thatโ€, he counselled.

Tee Bone agreed. While he did have a stomach of steel, he still wouldnโ€™t be much help if he was burning up with fever. But them something more alcoholic caught his eye. Surely this would still be good, even after all this time.ย  He was still sober, and one drink couldnโ€™t hurt.

Tee Bone took a hearty swig, and immediately spat it out.

โ€œUgh! Cold gin!โ€

El Moustachio couldnโ€™t help it. He was howling with laughter. And once Tee Bone had recovered, he was too.

But the laughter was cut short by a creak of the floorboards in the corridor outside. Instinctively, the two heroes whirled around, weapons drawn.

Keeping their eyes locked on the door, they carefully circled to more strategic locations around the room.

But before they could react, the door was blown open and two men jumped in. And thatโ€™s where things took an unexpected turn, as Tee Bone found himself face to face with none other than The Snowman.

Likewise, El Moustachio, was more than a little surprised to see Deke brandishing one of his gadgets at him.

But only for a brief second, before recognition flickered across Dekeโ€™s eyes and he was reacquainting himself with the Australian.

โ€œI didnโ€™t know youโ€™d be here as well, but Iโ€™m glad you could make it.โ€, Deke smiled.

โ€œIn one piece too.โ€, the Australian smiled back, thinking back to the fireworks earlier.

The two joined Tee Bone and The Snowman in getting everyone up to speed.

โ€œOh, and El Moustachioโ€, Deke said, โ€œThis is The Snowman. He helped us fend of some of Satanโ€™s strongest not too long ago.ย  You remember him from Christmas?โ€

โ€œA pleasure to meet you again, one demon-slayer to another,โ€ the Australian said, nodding his head towards The Snowman.

โ€œLikewise!โ€, the American replied.

โ€œAnd then he got himself captured by Aliens for looking like Richard Dreyfuss and we had to bail him outโ€, Deke ribbed

โ€œA common mistake Iโ€™m sureโ€, the Australian said.

But the introductions and reunions were cut short by a smattering of animal sounds from outside the building.

โ€œItโ€™s those beasts again!โ€, Deke exclaimed.

โ€œTheyโ€™re coming in!โ€, El Moustachio yelled trying to keep them at bay by the door.

But it was to no avail. They creatures easily breached the building.

The group knew theyโ€™d be surrounded and overrun if they stayed put and were forced to backpedal up a number of flights of stair to keep all the creatures in their sights. Eventually they found a room with no windows and decided to make their stand there.

Once everyone was inside, Tee Bone slammed the door and piled dressers and draws against it to barricade it.

And it kind of worked. None of the creatures were getting through the door. Itโ€™s just that the structural integrity of the walls had not improved over the decades of neglect. Our heroes were now playing a life and death game of whack-a-mole.

Over by the west wall, one of the foul beasts had managed to stick its snout through a notably large gap in the boards and was trying to work the rest of itself through.

Spying this, El Moustachio vaulted over a desk on all fours and swiped the creature across its nose with his fist. It disappeared from whence it came, howling in pain.

Tee Bone, who had watched the whole manoeuvre, was not impressed.

โ€œThat squirrel is a bad influenceโ€ he chided the Australian.

โ€œNonsenseโ€, El Moustachio replied. โ€œHe brings a whole new set of techniques to the superhero tactical combat arsenal.โ€

Tee Bone was not convinced, but a warm draft blew through the building, distracting him from his interrogation. The scraping and smashing sounds of earlier had stopped, and the creatures had mysteriously disappeared.

Deke turned to The Snowman.

โ€œHeyโ€ฆwhere are we right now?โ€

The Snowman consulted his map for a few seconds before the colour drained from his face. He looked up and grimly answered Deke.

โ€œThe Firehouse.โ€

A low hum began, and the temperature began to rise. El Moustachio noticed a number of vents around the room.

Deke saw them too.

โ€œTee! We need an exit!โ€ he yelled.

Tee Bone was already on it, and with one mighty strike of his guitar he sent a sonic boom through the room that reduced their makeshift barricades to splinters.

But they werenโ€™t out of the (fire)woods yet. The rush of air throughout the rest of the building had the immediate effect of setting the place ablaze.

โ€œWhatโ€™s that they say about the frying pan?โ€, El Moustachio joked.

By now the entire building was aflame, and the four men had a very big problem. Wasting no time, the group set about franticly looking for an exit and, ironically, it was the Snowman who could stand the heat the best.

โ€œGuys, over here!โ€, He yelled from one of the rooms on the south side of the building.

The others ran in and saw what The Snowman had found – an open window that also faced the neighbouring building.

โ€œBrilliant!โ€, El Moustachio exclaimed.

As Deke pulled his grappling hook out, Tee Bone turned to The Snowman.

โ€œNeed a lift?โ€, he asked.

โ€œYes please. All outta ice.โ€, The Snowman replied.

Deke fired, and within seconds, was lifted out of sight. Tee Bone grabbed The Snowmanโ€™s arm, before looking back at El Moustachio.

โ€œYou got this?โ€

โ€œI got this.โ€

Needing to hear nothing more, Tee Bone exited, flying upwards, Snowman in one hand and guitar in the other.

El Moustachio took a few steps back to give himself a run-up. In one hand he held his razor-sharp boomerang and in the other he held the fire axe from the kitchen. He began to run towards the window, speeding up with every step.

When he got within a meter he dove forward out the window as an explosion blew out behind him. With a thud he hit the side of the building next to the Firehouse, digging his boomerang and axe into the stone masonry.

Gritting his teeth, he wrenched the boomerang out of the wall and slammed it back in, one row of bricks higher. He then did the same with the fire axe and continued alternating the two until he had climbed to the roof, bit by bit.

When he reached the top Tee Bone helped him up, and he found his feet atop the not-burning building. But his survival had come at a cost. The axe was now blunt, and his boomerang was twisted and mangled from climb up the building. El Moustachio sadly tossed them aside.

With his weapons appraisal complete, he joined the others in surveying the area. From here they could actually see the Psycho Circus. The spotlights were the main giveaway, along with the cheering that was audible from even here.

โ€œWe gotta hurry.โ€, The Snowman stated.

โ€œI could fly us there.โ€, Tee Bone suggested.

โ€œIโ€™m not so keen to chance those firework towers a second time. Or the airborne creaturesโ€, Deke replied. El Moustachio nodded his head behind him.

โ€œFair enough. Looks like weโ€™re going on foot then.โ€

The group climbed down the building and set off for the Psycho Circus. While they couldnโ€™t see any of the creatures of the night, they were still on edge.

But the most eventful occurrence of the trip ended up being the stumbling upon a shortcut too valuable to pass up. The House of Cards had a service entrance that exited right outside the Psycho Circus.

The group cautiously entered and looked around. Everything was exactly as expected. Giant face cards adorned every wall in the large room. The only strange thing was that the diamond suite had been miscoloured black.

A booming voice from the mezzanine caught their attention.

โ€œThe writingโ€™s on the wall for you, heroes! You could barely survive in the outside world; youโ€™ll have no chance in here! Down on your knees and face the execution!โ€, monologued a man who could only be described as the King of Hearts.

โ€œIs this clown for real?โ€™, โ€œDeke leaned over and whispered to Tee Bone.

โ€œLiving in a fantasy, but I reckon we can just breeze past him. He doesnโ€™t look so tough, and we are in a bit of a hurry.โ€

โ€œAgreed.โ€, Deke replied.

And with that the four men bolted for the door on the right side of the room.

โ€œWha-โ€œ, the King said, quite dumfounded.

Paying his highness no further attention, our heroes ran into the east corridor, looking for an exit. But the King of Hearts wasnโ€™t going to give up that easily. Halfway down the corridor one of the cards in the wall (the ace, to be precise) came to life as the King leaned out from it, menacing the heroes.

โ€œIโ€™m always near you. Thereโ€™s nowhere to hide!โ€ he proclaimed.

But he was almost immediately forced to vacate the card when Ripper leapt from El Moustachioโ€™s shoulder and went to town shredding the wall.

โ€œStupid name anyway.โ€, Tee Bone grumbled to himself as he watched the squirrel.

The group continued down the corridor, coming to a door at the end.

โ€œThereโ€™s nowhere to run!โ€, the King howled after them from all around.

And he was right, because as the group entered the next room the walls folded in on themselves to block all the other exits. The shadows flashed across the mostly empty room and the King of Hearts was back.

โ€œRoom service!โ€, he yelled as he hacked at the door with his halberd.

โ€œIโ€™ve had enough of this.โ€ The Snowman said, reaching into his bag.

Pulling out piece after piece, he began to assemble an implement that ended up being a small flamethrower.

โ€œWhy does The Snowman need a flamethrower?โ€ El Moustachio asked.

โ€œWe donโ€™t exactly want a repeat of the snow goon incidentโ€, The Snowman replied. โ€œPlus it comes in handy during labour disputes. The snowman union drives a hard bargain. Now letโ€™s burn this sucker down.โ€

With a final check of the weapon and a flick of the safety, the Snowman let it rip through the gap in the door.

โ€œBurn bitch burnโ€

โ€œAaiiieeeeโ€, the King screamed as the flames caught his robes, licking their way up towards his face.

Taking advantage of the King of Heartโ€™s futile preoccupation with dousing himself, the group burst out of the door and ran for the service exit. The run went smoothly, and they were not accosted by any irate royals at all.

In no time at all they had found the exit and excused themselves from the premises. Looking back, the group saw that the entire place was ablaze now, as a thick plume of smoke billowed up into the air.

โ€œCrumble tumble house of cardsโ€, Deke smirked to himself.

The smoke also had the effect of eliminating the threat of the creatures of the night. Coughing their guts up, they fell from the sky in droves, unable to see or fly straight through the smoke.

But our heroes were more focused on the task directly in front of them. The Snowman held up his map one last time.

โ€œThis is it – the Psycho Circus.โ€

โ€œIs everyone ready?โ€, Tee Bone asked.

They all nodded.

โ€œThen letโ€™s get the party started.โ€

Chapter 16:ย  A Crazy Crazy Night (Part 1)

Somewhere off the coast of Florida

The wind howled furiously as wave after wave battered the hull of The Chikara. The small fishing vessel had been caught in a vicious squall on the way back to the mainland and was now hopelessly lost in the Atlantic Sea, completely at the mercy of the tropical storm that had quickly developed.

Captain Retsuden stood alone at the helm. Whatever crew he had had left after the majority had taken their chances in the lifeboat had been swept overboard long ago. He defiantly remained by the wheel despite it having about as much control over the shipโ€™s direction as the rats panickily scurrying below him.

Then, in the distance, he spied something that sent a shot of optimism through his heart. A light of some kind. There must have been land nearby. But this brief pang of hopefulness was quickly replaced by a feeling of dread as a second light joined the first and the deck of the ship was bathed in a red glow.

Then there was a loud crack as The Chikara struck something. Or, rather, more correctly, something struck The Chikara. The ship lurched dangerously and began to sink beneath the waves. Retsuden, resigned to his fate, remained at the helm to the very end. After all, the captain always goes down with the ship.

Meanwhile, in the KMA Eastern offices, a bald man scrambled to bring the past few years of research he had into a coherent package. He had just had the breakthrough he needed after tracking down the source of some cursed Iron Maiden merchandise at a recent concert. This was the last crucial bit of information he needed to pinpoint the location he was after, but he was afraid it might have arrived too late.

He had to act quickly. There was still time to prevent this unholy ritual and its disastrous consequences, but he couldnโ€™t do it alone. Scooping up the most important information, he ran out of his library of books, through the hall of guitars and to the staircase to the lower ground floor. Halfway up the stairs he paused, a thought striking him.

He then ran back down and into his office to the photocopier. A couple minutes later he was out the door and on his way to the post office. He knew he had the contacts necessary (with the right favours owed) to get these packages where they needed to be as soon as possible.

Soon every package had departed for its destination. The man wasnโ€™t sure if any of them would get there in time, but if they did, he hoped that it would be enough. All he could now was hope.

Elsewhere, in Thunder Bay to be precise, our two superheros were having a most disagreeable night. It was near midnight, but neither of them could sleep, on account of what sounded unpleasantly like a pop concert in the nearby town. Despite living in the secluded forest hideaway of Dekeโ€™s Palace, the two were not immune to the laws of physics (well, not all of them at least) and their best soundproofing efforts were not enough to drown out the dance-pop beat that permeated through the castle windows.

To make matters worse, the basement was receiving its annual fumigation and could therefore not be retreated to in this time of need.

At least Tee Bone had managed to find some fun testing out his new guitar. His lightning cracks kept better time than whoever was smashing the skins kilometres away.

But he couldnโ€™t do that all night, and in this moment, had just returned to find Deke furiously assembling what looked like a pair of industrial strength earmuffs.

โ€œThey been at it long?โ€ Tee Bone asked.

โ€œUgh, all night!โ€, Deke groaned back.

โ€œMaybe I should give them a taste of real musicโ€, Tee Bone said, motioning to his guitar.

โ€œNo no no no no no no no, the last thing we need is these people knowing where we liveโ€, Deke quickly shut him down.

โ€œFair point. What are we going to do then?โ€, Tee Bone queried.

The answer ended up being something neither of them could have predicted, as an owl, of all things, crashed through the window, large package in tow. Looking at each other incredulously, the two found this development most curious. The owl departed out the way it came with a bit more dignity, leaving Tee Bone to pick up the package and carefully bring it to Dekeโ€™s workstation.

Deke scanned it with his bomb detector. Everything appeared safe, but even so he was on guard. Tee Bone unwrapped it, finding several books, documents and a letter addressed to the duo. Tee Bone began to read.

โ€œDear Tee Bone Man and Superdekes. Apologies for the nature of this communication, but it was of the utmost importance that this message reach you before dawn. This is Mr Books. We met at the Iron Maiden show a few months ago, and I spent Christmas Day with you guys.

For years I have been troubled by the plans of the wicked Lester Blackwell. A disgraced circus owner, he disappeared long ago, taking his troupe of criminals with him and swearing his revenge upon the world.

Rumour had it there was an island in the Caribbean he bought from the Cuban government that he has hidden himself away in, slowly gathering his army of the depraved and insane. Several naval disappearances have also been linked with the area.

ย I have spent the good part of the last decade trying to discern the location of this haunted carnival, and I have finally narrowed it down to the coordinates on the included map. Ancient writings tell of a well of dark soul energy buried beneath the island. Energy that could be unleashed upon the world with the right ritual.

ย Word is that it will happen tomorrow and tonight. I have included all the supporting documentation in this package if you would like proof of my words, but I urge you to heed them and head to the coordinates immediately. The whole world is counting on you.

ย Regards,

A friend and ally.”

The two sat back, soaking in the information they had just received and thinking back to all the people they talked to at the Iron Maiden show.ย  Ah yes.ย  Aaron, “Mr. Books” himself.ย  Of course.ย  But Books tended to stay out of the big-level threat adventures.ย  Was it really from him?

โ€œIt could be a trapโ€, Deke mused.

โ€œTrue, but if someone has it out for us weโ€™re going to cross them eventually. Itโ€™s not like we have anything better to do here anywayโ€, Tee Bone replied, motioning towards the large earmuffs in front of Deke.

โ€œDonโ€™t remind meโ€, he muttered.

โ€œAnd if this letter is genuine, we have a serious duty to the world as heroes to stop this Mr Blackwell.โ€ Tee Bone continued.

โ€œYeah, youโ€™re right. Letโ€™s do thisโ€

Deke got up and grabbed his backpack, quickly filling it with whatever gadgets he had at hand. Once satisfied he headed down to the basement with Tee Bone and mounted his flying motorbike. With a reassuring nod between them, the two set off into the night, unaware of just exactly what was in store for them.

First on the agenda was, apparently, flak cannons. Well, not really, but to all intents and purposes to the little flying motorbike they were. They were actually fireworks, and they were too close to comfort for Deke and Tee Bone.

They had started shortly after the duo had sighted the island they were after. While it had been mostly shrouded in a sickly fog, a few towers and other constructions protruded above the mist. And it was from these towers that the armaments assailing them originated.

The firepower forced Deke to fly the bike low over the sea, barely clearing the choppy waves below. But it did the trick, and the two heroes shortly landed on the marina part of wicked Lester Blackwellโ€™s fairgrounds.

And by golly had it seen better days. Rubbish littered the ground everywhere, as peeling facias, faded paint and rusted metal abounded as far as the eye could see. The entire place was dying a slow, painful death deteriorating away with each passing day.

But Deke and Tee Bone were not here to be safety inspectors. Though there were no signs of life yet, they knew better than to trust the exterior appearance. They cautiously moved deeper into the carnival, passing through a strip of dilapidated booths on their way to the mainland.

As they walked, nameplates such as The Man of 1000 Faces, Russian Roulette and Mr Speed caught their eyes. A cursory examination of the booths indicated that they had not been used in some time, but Tee Bone couldnโ€™t shake the feeling that something sinister was amiss.

And he didnโ€™t have to wait long for confirmation. As the two reached the mainland and approached the Journey of 1000 Years rollercoaster, the sound of running feet caught Tee Boneโ€™s ear. He swung around to face the source of the sound, but the area behind them was as dead as it had been when they walked through it moments ago.

And then he was flat on his face on the grimy floor, hit down from behind. A thump from his right indicated Deke had befallen a similar fate. Tee Bone jumped to his feet but couldnโ€™t see anyone. However, he had a trick up his sleeve. He struck a power chord and watched the sound waves fly out in front of him.

And there he was. The sound waves had thickened the air such that when the individual that was now visible attempted to run through them, they slowed him down enough for Deke and Tee Bone to see.

The individual was a young man with a bright red mohawk, like a fin, and wearing a skintight aerodynamic suit with a lightning bolt on it. This must have been the Mr Speed the booth earlier was talking about. Marvellous.

Deke and Tee Bone quickly threw themselves against each other back-to-back and tried to fight off their foe a little better. And they did see some success, as the rate at which their jaws received a left hook was drastically reduced.

This did not please the zooming zoomer, who retaliated by speeding up to the rusting signage above our two heroes, detaching a large piece and pushing it towards our heroes on the ground. Thankfully it only smashed itself to pieces when it hit the ground, as Tee Bone had dived left into a nearby hedge and Deke had thrown himself backwards through the doors to the Journey of 1000 Years.

Immediately back on the ground, Mr Speed quickly took advantage of this, laying a punch so heavy into Deke that it knocked him unceremoniously into the rollercoaster car. And no sooner had Deke comprehended this was he thrust back into the seat as the coaster lurched forward and began the ride.

โ€œDeke!โ€ Tee Bone cried out, but he was quickly silenced by a fist to the guts from a certain rapid individual. Bent over in pain, Tee Bone decided that heโ€™d had enough, and he wound up his arm and struck a seismic chord so powerful the sound wave liquefied the ground in front of him as they passed through it. And this had exactly the desired effect as Mr Speed, trapped by the sound waves, sunk waist deep into the mucky ground. And once the sound waves stopped trapping him the newly solid again ground did.

A great deal of swearing followed as Tee Bone walked out of earshot and poked his head into The Journey of 1000 Years. There was no sign of Deke, but Tee Bone knew he had to be somewhere on the island still. He just didnโ€™t have the time to stand around waiting for Deke to get back here. He had to move on and hope he found his friend.

Then his attention was caught by the crack of fireworks in the sky above. The sound of a plane buzzing above him also answered why they were being fired. Thankfully, the plane appeared to make it out unscathed, as the sound of its engine eventually disappeared from Tee Boneโ€™s ears

Meanwhile, back in the coaster, Deke had been receiving a super-condensed history of the earth as the coaster raced through the ride. He had narrowly avoided having his head bitten off by an animatronic T-rex (donโ€™t ask) and he was sure that wasnโ€™t going to be the last attempt on his life.

And he was right. Because immediately approaching was the end of the line. The tracks had been broken at the turn ahead and Deke was about to go over the edge. He fumbled around in his bag as the coaster hurtled towards its final destination, pulling out his grappling hook mere seconds before the track ended.

And, wasting no time, he immediately fired it towards the rafters. It caught on a beam and lifted him high above the track. He watched as the coaster hurled itself off the edge and exploded below in a fireball.

โ€œThat was too closeโ€, Deke muttered to himself.

Once the fire below him had burned out, he slowly lowered himself to the ground and began to search for an exit. He soon stumbled across a maintenance access door and availed himself of this pathetic excuse for a history lesson.

He found himself in the midst of a number of rides and attractions, and he didnโ€™t exactly fancy the sound of any of them. Detroit Rock City sounded like the sort of place heโ€™d need Tee Bone to conquer, and heโ€™d had enough of prehistory to go into Back to the Stone Age.

In the end he chose the Tunnel of Love. Surely it couldnโ€™t be that bad.

Elsewhere in the carnival, Tee Bone was also in the midst of searching for any clues as to the location of the ritual site. He had reached the heart of the attractions as Deke had, and was similarly not too enthused at the sound of most of them.

Eventually, he chose to begin his investigations in the Hall of Mirrors. At least there he could see anyone trying to sneak up on him.

Or at least so he thought. No sooner had he stepped foot in the hall, the door swung shut and suddenly he was trapped in the dim, foggy light with no way out.

Deke was also wrong. It could be that bad. He was now sailing down a one-way current in a rotting dinghy towards who knows what horrors. It was already disconcerting enough that the โ€˜stalactitesโ€™ above his head were actually rusting, bloodstained blades.

But they were staying in place for now, so Deke kept his head low and focused on bailing out any water that got into the boat. His vigilance paid off, and he was able to keep himself afloat.

Eventually, a fork in the river appeared. While both paths looked the same, a beat-up sign on the island separating them caught Dekeโ€™s attention. โ€˜Got love for saleโ€™ it said, along with an arrow pointing to the left.

Deke broke a chunk off the boatโ€™s hull and started paddling to the left. At least he might find someone there who he could extract some information out of. And he did, for it was not long until the boat hit land.

Before him was not a sight he had hoped to see. The rusted blades and blood-soaked implements of the tunnel earlier had been nothing compared to this. Through the dim light Deke spied what he was pretty certain was a gruesome backyard surgeonโ€™s โ€˜operating theatreโ€™. So much for getting information out of anyone. Judging by the bodies around, there wasnโ€™t much left to get out of the people here.

And he was not alone here either. A man in a (mostly) white surgical coat was leaning against a cabinet, aimlessly whitling a broken heart shape into the wood.

The man looked up and noticed Deke. He smiled wide in a toothy grin that was more unnerving that reassuring. He taunted Deke, who was still standing in his boat on the waterโ€™s edge.

โ€œThey call me Dr Love, because stay with me for one night and Iโ€™ll steal your heartโ€, he said, brandishing his scalpel.

Refusing to be intimidated, Deke reached into his bag for his collapsible baton and advanced on the so-called surgeon who called this place home.

This man was going down right now on principle.

Tee Bone was not having a very pleasant time either. Something had gone very wrong in the Hall of Mirrors. All manner of grotesque creatures and terrifying hellscapes leapt out of him wherever he looked.

He pulled out his guitar and tried to play, but his fingers were shaking too badly. When he finally succeeded in striking a note that shattered the mirrors and their fearsome vista, it was revealed that all he had done was turn them from a window to a door, the hellscapes and demons now appearing with even greater fidelity.

Tee Bone ran, finding himself only deeper in the labyrinth, with intact mirrors and the terrors they captured as far as the eye can see. Rounding a corner, he abruptly came to the most horrifying sight yet.

Tee Bone almost passed out. โ€˜Reflectedโ€™ in front of him wasโ€ฆhimself?. Sunken crimson eyes, a dark suit and cape and, worst of all, a thick beard and moustache. It was the face of evil and it was staring right into Tee Boneโ€™s soul.

His anger briefly outweighing his horror, he punched his hand clean through the mirror, as if this show of force asserted that he would never become like that wicked being in the mirror. Looking away briefly, his eyes caught sight of a silhouette in the fog.

โ€œDeke, is that you? Talk to meโ€, he called out into the fog.

No sooner had the words left his mouth, the figure scurried off into the darkness. The sound of a shard of glass hitting the ground turned his attention back towards the cracked mirror in front of him.

In the fractured mirror he now saw something different, someone he didnโ€™t recognise. A mop of wild green hair sat atop this personโ€™s head and they were dressed mostly in orange save for a bright green cape and gloves. They cackled maniacally as Tee Bone staggered backwards.

The laughter echoed around the room, and Tee Bone became acutely aware that it was now coming from two sources.

Spinning around, he came face to face with a demon unlike any other heโ€™d seen before. Its eyes burned like red coals and it radiated terror. The creature advanced on Tee Bone, the laughter getting louder with each step.

Then everything abruptly stopped, as the figure menacing Tee Bone had been whomped upside the head by something and was now falling forward onto the ground, noticeably less demonic in appearance.

And standing there triumphantly above the fallen villain was El Moustachio, the hero of Australia. In his hand was his moustache-shaped boomerang and on his shoulder there was a furry little black animal eating an acorn.

And this time Tee Bone did pass out.

โ€œWhat spooked him?โ€ El Moustachio asked the squirrel on his shoulder.

Deke was breathing hard. The doctorโ€™s wiry frame had held a surprising amount of strength, and Deke hadnโ€™t been able to finish the fight as fast as heโ€™d hoped.

And now the good doctor had traded his scalpel for a more potent weapon- a buzzsaw. And he had Deke on the back foot. But the wily Canadian always had a plan. Backtracking past a table, he subtly swiped a scalpel of his own as he went, afforded the opportunity on account of the bad doctor reaching the end of the extension cord.

But Doctor Love merely laughed and taunted him, aiming a gun squarely at Dekeโ€™s chest. It had a curious heart-shaped barrel.

โ€œLoveโ€™s a deadly weapon, you know.โ€

And he pulled the trigger. Click. Click, click. Empty.

Deke smirked. A few more steps back and everything was in place. Despite his feelings towards this man, Deke gave him one chance to stand down.

โ€œDrop it and you can still walk away with your lifeโ€, he offered.

โ€œHa! So youโ€™re getting desperate now then, eh?โ€ the doctor incorrectly inferred. โ€œI must admit, that doesnโ€™t really shock me.โ€

Deke sighed and jumped up onto the surgical table. This puzzled the doctor, which gave Deke the opportunity to hurl the scalpel with pinpoint precision at a generator cord on the ground. It pierced it true, and the damp ground did the rest.

Doctor Love was dead before he hit the ground, his corpse still twitching as it lay there. Eventually one of the few circuit breakers around decided to kick in and the area once again become safe to step on.

Deke jumped down and, taking a moment to catch his breath, he began searching the area for any clues as to where he should go next. It wasnโ€™t long before he found it: A letter from Lester Blackwell himself, just recently opened. Deke began to read it.

Tonightโ€™s the night! You are cordially invited to the Grand Ascendancy at the Psycho Circus. Please arrive after midnight in your finest dress. All will be rewarded for their years of loyalty. ย

Deke checked his watch. They were running out of time.

But at least now they knew where to go.

He just had to find Tee Bone first.

To be continuedโ€ฆ Tomorrow!

The Adventures of Tee Bone Man: Status Acoustic – The Really Big Deal (by Harrison Kopp)

THE ADVENTURES OF TEE BONE MAN Chapter 15:ย  Status Acoustic – The Really Big Deal

An empty hollowness filled Dekeโ€™s Palace. Ever since losing his guitar in battle against the Black Night (see Chapter 9 – Ed.), Tee Bone felt like a part of him was missing. And getting a replacement wasnโ€™t as easy as you might think. You couldnโ€™t just buy any old guitar and expect it to stand up to the power of Tee Boneโ€™s playing. No sir, you needed something more robust. You needed to fortify it, or else it would likely crumble to pieces when Tee Bone tried to use it for anything more than a light strum.

Because, you see, when Tee Bone and Deke fell into that vat of radioactive Scotch, the liquid also infused the guitar with the power. But that Scotch was seemingly all gone- evaporated in the fire or soaked into the ground (which would explain the peculiar vegetation around the Palace). Though Tee Bone had a replacement guitar lined up, the search for Scotch was becoming a wild tribble chase.

Tee Bone was starting to get depressed, and had taken to moping around the palace with a bottle of regular scotch in hand. Once or twice he had tried submerging a guitar in the stuff to see if it would work, but that only made him sadder because of all the wasted Scotch.

But today things were about to change. A notification popped up on Dekeโ€™s computer: a message from The Brainiac.

โ€œHey Tee, I think weโ€™ve got a lead on some radioactive Scotch. The Brainiac says he knows the one guy in the world who might still have a bottle of the stuff.โ€

Tee Bone instantly perked up.

โ€œYou know, I just remembered I needed to pick something up in Toronto too,โ€ he grinned.

โ€œI bet you did,โ€ Deke replied with a smile. โ€œIโ€™ll let The Brainiac know weโ€™re coming.โ€

A few days later, Deke and Tee Bone were in this strange land where albums released earlier than everywhere else. Or so thatโ€™s what they had been led to believe. Following The Brainiacโ€™s directions they reached a small, weathered building. In peeling paint was the name Trillion Dollar Treats.

โ€œThis is the placeโ€, Deke said, putting his phone back in his pocket.

They walked inside and were instantly confronted by shelf upon shelf of all manner of strange items, most of which they had never seen before in their lives. Some things were easy to identify, such as a jar of whiskey and a vintage Les Paul guitar, but others were completely undecipherable.

โ€œWhatโ€™s a belljar?โ€, Deke asked.

โ€œNot what weโ€™re afterโ€, Tee Bone said, hurrying him along.

Emerging from the aisle, they sighted The Brainiac by the counter.

โ€œTee! Deke! Glad you could make it. Itโ€™s great to see you,โ€ he called out.

โ€œTotally. Itโ€™s been too long.โ€ Tee Bone said, โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t believe what weโ€™ve got up to since that night in Thunder Bay.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure itโ€™ll be a hell of a story,โ€ the Brainiac smiled.

โ€œYou bet. We even got all the way out to Australia,โ€ Deke chimed in.

โ€œOh it would be like hell there,โ€ the Brainiac replied thinking of summer.

โ€œActually, hellโ€™s a bit different. You seeโ€ฆโ€

But before Tee Bone could continue the front door swung open and a long haired man with a leather jacket and pants visibly scuffed from all the rock star slides strode in.

โ€œThis would be the man,โ€ the Brainiac said. โ€œGentlemen, meet Max the Axe.โ€

Max greeted the trio.

โ€œHey guys, always happy to see some more potential customers. I take it these are the guys you told me about Mike?โ€

โ€œYep,” the Brainiac replied. โ€œThis is Deke and Tee Bone.โ€

Max shook our heroesโ€™ hands and then put his arms around their shoulders.

โ€œSay, you guys wouldnโ€™t be interested in some authentic space marine blasters would ya?โ€

โ€œMax,” the Brainiac chided before Tee Bone could ask him exactly where he got such items from. โ€œYou know why theyโ€™re here.โ€

โ€œRight, rightโ€, he said, walking to behind the counter and dumping a bag of assorted items out. โ€œBut first, you wouldnโ€™t be able to tell what any of this is would you?โ€

The Braniac studied the items.

โ€œWell that was a THX-1138 targeting computer, but the screenโ€™s broken so itโ€™s not much use.โ€

โ€œCan you fix it?โ€ Max asked.

โ€œI can replace the screen but not with anything military grade enough to justify the price youโ€™d ask.โ€

Max glumly tossed the piece of machinery to the Brainiac.

โ€œAll yours then.โ€

Deke was in heaven.

โ€œYour collection is very impressive. I know a guy whoโ€™d like to get his hands on a lot of this stuff,” he said, with a wink to Tee Bone.

โ€œOh you mean Satan?โ€ Max replied. โ€œYeah, he and I have had some altercations in the past. Needless to say he doesnโ€™t come around here no more.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Tee Bone said, quite impressed and genuinely interested. โ€œHow did you manage to come to that arrangement?โ€

Max pulled a heavy guitar out from behind the counter and laid it down with a thud. It had a large blade on each end of the body.

โ€œAh,” Tee Bone said, noticing the parademon heads mounted on the wall above them.

โ€œNow Mike tells me you were after a bottle of radioactive Scotch. Hypothetically, if I happened to have one, what would you use it for?โ€

Tee Bone and Deke looked at one another.

โ€œWe need to get Tee Bone his super-powered guitar back,” Deke said after a pause.

โ€œJust checking itโ€™s you,” Max said, unlocking a mystical safe behind the counter.

Soon Max had the bottle in his hand and was carefully handing it to Tee Bone.

โ€œHow did you come by this?โ€ Tee Bone whispered, his eyes wide.

โ€œI bought it at one of William W. Roderick Stewart IIIโ€™s garage sales. This stuffโ€™s like liquid gold, you know?โ€

Tee Bone took a step back in awe. Deke rubbed his temples in frustration. Of course Stewart would just sell the most valuable liquid in the world at a garage sale.

โ€œHow much for itโ€ Tee Bone asked, his voice hollow.

Max smiled.

“Any friend of the Brainiac is a friend of me. I know who you guys are. You can have it free of charge on one condition- Iโ€™m going on an expedition to South America next month to recover some ancient artefacts, so Iโ€™ll need you guys to keep an eye on the shop during your patrols.โ€

โ€œDone. Thank you,โ€ Tee Bone replied instantly.

โ€œThe Brainiac will be running the store while Iโ€™m gone,โ€ Max continued โ€œso if you need to get a message to me about anything, just let him know and heโ€™ll pass it on.โ€

โ€œWill do,” Deke nodded.

โ€œAnd feel free to drop in anytime,” the Brainiac added.

โ€œYou can count on it,โ€ Tee Bone replied as the heroes exited the building.

โ€œHey, you guys wouldnโ€™t be interested in a tape deck as well, would you?โ€ Max yelled after them.

Back in the palace, Tee Bone had just finished soaking the guitar in the radioactive Scotch. Tenderly picking it up, he weighed it in his hands.

โ€œHow is it?โ€ Deke asked.

Tee Bone struck a power chord that surged through the room. Every little piece of dust around was picked up and neatly guided itself into the trash can at the end of the room.

โ€œItโ€™s perfect!โ€ he said.

The Adventures of Edie Van Heelinโ€™:ย  Edie Meets the Wolfย (by LeBrain)

The Adventures Of Edie Van Heelin’: Edie Meets the Wolf

THE ADVENTURES OF EDIE VAN HEELIN’:ย  Edie Meets the Wolf

Wolfgang Van Halen was feeling down.

He should have known better, but he opened his phone that morning to a tirade of hate on social media.ย  Why did he do this?ย  Did he have to run his own social media?ย  No, but he felt that giving it up would be giving in to the trolls.ย  They were relentless, and they were hurtful.ย  Not that Wolf ever let them see the hurt.ย  Still, he hurt inside, and it was very real.

“Why don’t you try making a name for yourself, instead of living off your father’s?” asked one troll.

Wolf grumbled to himself.ย  “Van Halen IS my name!” he yelled at the screen.ย  “What, should I change my name to Wolfgang McCartney?ย  Wolfgang Led Zeppelin?ย  What idiots these people are.ย  Not worth my time.ย  Why do I bother…”

He walked across the studio floor, plugged in a guitar, and tried to jam away the blues.ย  He played some licks, but a dark cloud still hung over his head, a bad mood that wouldn’t go away.

Wolf’s playing was interrupted by a sonic boom overhead.ย  He put his guitar down and looked out the window to see the contrails of rockets in the sky.

“Oh shit!” he exclaimed.ย  “I forgot!ย  I have a recording session today.”

He heard a knock at the studio door.

Wolf tripped over a guitar cable on the way to the door, but managed to open it with rock star-like grace.ย  Before him stood a vision unlike any he had seen before.

The woman at the door was dressed in head-to-toe silver.ย  Silver rocket boots, a sleek tight-fitting short silver dress, silver lipstick, and silver nails.ย  Over her shoulder was a guitar case, also in silver.ย  Edie Van Heelin’ had arrived.ย  It may only be a recording session, but she was dressed for the stage anyway!

“Edie Van Heelin’, I presume?” asked Wolf with a broad smile.

“In the flesh!” gleamed Edie, her silver lips smiling just as wide as her eyes.ย  Even though she had just broken the sound barrier, her long brown hair was as perfectly stick-straight as if she had just finished brushing.ย  “How are you, Wolf?ย  You know, your dad was my biggest influence on guitar.ย  But I love your album!ย  It’s so different from Van Halen, so modern, so melodic, so good!ย  Amazing lyrics and music!”

The two hugged.ย  “Thanks for saying that, Edie.ย  I’m having a rough day.ย  I miss my pop.ย  I hate these online trolls.”

Edie’s face turned to sadness.ย  “Come on, Wolf.ย  Let’s sit, you got any tea?”

“Of course, yeah, come in please.”ย  Wolf went over to the kettle and started brewing some tea.ย ย “Green with honey, right?”ย  Edie nodded yes, eagerly.ย  Wolf laughed.ย  “I did my research, I made sure we had something for you today.”

A few minutes later, Wolf returned with two steaming cups.ย  The two sat across from each other.ย  Wolf picked up a guitar and randomly strummed as he sat.

Edie began speaking in a soft, understanding tone.

“I lost my dad a few years ago, too,” she began.ย  “I understand your pain. That song you wrote for him, ‘Distance’…it gets me.ย  I feel it.ย  I know your pain.ย ย And trolls?ย  You should see what I get online.ย  My body, my face, my clothes, my makeup…they have an opinion about everything, and they are never happy.ย  And it’s every day.ย  You know what?ย  There’s only one person I can make happy, and that’s me.ย  So I dress how I want to dress, how I feel good.ย  I play the music I like, and it would not matter anyway, because they always have something to complain about.”

Wolf’s eyes went wide.

“Right?ย  They tell me to do my own thing, so I put out my own album, and it’s nothing like Van Halen.ย  Then, they tell me I should reform the band with Dave and Sammy and do a tour instead!ย  And then, they tell me I shouldn’t be trying to milk the Van Halen name!ย  I can’t do anything right according to them!”

Edie had removed her guitar from its case and was strumming along with Wolf.

“You know what the solution is Wolf?ย  I know that you do.”

Wolf shrugged.ย  “Tell me.”

Edie smiled and played a melodic line on her guitar.

“You just keep doing what you do!ย  Your album is awesome!ย  I especially love the song ‘Resolve’.ย  The defiance you show in that song is what you need to show to those online trolls!ย  Just keep being you, and remember that they only wish they were you.ย  Maintain your resolve!”

Wolf kicked into the main riff of the song.ย  Edie began singing along.

“No more flowers, what we know is not the same. Drunk with power, only you control this game!” she sang with deep conviction.

Wolf smiled as the two jammed.

“Countless hours, only you can cure this pain. You freaking coward, brought on more unwanted change!”

Wolf laughed.ย  “The word is ‘fucking’, Edie, not ‘freaking’!”

Edie smiled.ย  “Edie Van Heelin’ doesn’t F-bomb, Wolf!”

Laughing, Wolf nearly fell out of his chair.ย  “Seriously!?ย  You dress like the hottest space chick I’ve ever seen in my life, with nine inches worth of heels on your boots, and you won’t swear?”

Edie smiled.ย  “Nope!ย  Much like you Wolf, I am more than what I seem, and not what I appear to be!”

“Clearly, that is true!ย  I’m glad to have met you, Edie Van Heelin’.”ย  Wolfgang put down his guitar.ย  “So what are we working on today?”

Edie cranked out some chords.ย  “Time to start my debut album, Wolfie!ย  And there’s only one person I want to produce it.”

“Me?” Wolf asked with both hands pointed towards himself.

“You’re the one, Wolf, you’re my number one pick,” proclaimed Edie with the confidence she embodied.

“I could never say no to a woman as beautiful as you,” gushed Wolf.ย  “Fortunately, you have the talent to back it up.”

This time it was Edie who blushed.ย  It’s not every day you get a compliment from the son of Edward Van Halen.

“Aww thanks Wolf,” she said as she nervously played with her hair.ย  “I’m honoured.ย  Wanna hear some songs?”

Wolf nodded eagerly yes, and set up the desk to record.

This was it!ย  The Edie Van Heelin’ album was happening, for real now.ย  Edie took a moment to let it sink in.ย  She’d worked hard to get to this point.ย  Regardless of naysayers, the haters, and the trolls, she had made it this far.ย  Nothing would stop her now.

Wolfgang Van Halen took a seat at the console, opened some software, adjusted some levels, and said the magic words.ย ย “We’re rolling!”

Edie dug deep, ready to rock him with her new material.ย  She placed her perfect silver fingertips upon the fretboard, and strummed….

…Just as the lights went out.

“What just happened?” shouted Wolf in frustration as he stumbled blindly around the studio, looking for a flashlight.ย  “The power just went out as we started to record?ย  What the hell?”

Edie shook.ย  This was all too familiar to her.

“I have a bad feeling about this….”

Epilogue

In orbit overhead, comfortably seated in his starship, the evil clone known as Shinzon laughed.ย  He got out of his chair with a flourish of his long dark hair, and placed his evil hand upon his clean-shaven Australian chin.ย  He laughed some more, as he looked down upon the Earth.ย  His boss wanted this album delayed, and Shinzon had just caused a power disruption that would keep Wolfgang’s studio down for weeks.ย  His boss would be very, very happy this time.

He cackled.

“Revenge is a dish best served cold!ย  And Edie Van Heelin’…it is very cold, in space….”

By Mike and @MarriedandHeels

THE ADVENTURES OF EDIE VAN HEELIN’: Edie Van Heelin’s Canadian Vacation Part 2

Continued from Part 1…

What a ridiculous pair they made!ย  Ahead by several paces was Edie Van Heelin’, rock star and superhero, dressed in her most fab hiking gear, striding confidently north along the shoreline.ย  Panting behind her, dressed in camo shorts and a sweaty T-shirt, was Fanboy Mike, trying desperately to keep up.

To his credit, on this hike at least, Mike was not wearing his Crocs.

“Hey Edie!” he panted.ย  “Can we take a break?ย  I can barely breathe!”ย  He gasped as he found a large rock to sit on.

Edie Van Heelin’ circled back and sat with her friend.

“Sure, let’s take five,” she said as she sipped from a water bottle.ย  “How much further to the next town?”

Mike grabbed his phone from his pocket and tried to get a signal.

“I’m sorry but I can’t get a connection.ย  It’s been 35 years since I last hiked up this far, but I’d guess we’re about half way.”

Edie marvelled at the scenery before her.

“You know, I’ve always said California is the place to be, but Canada isn’t so bad.”ย  She breathed deep.ย  “It smells different from the ocean, but it still smells like water.”

“That’s the dead fish you’re smelling Edie,” deadpanned Mike.ย  “But yeah, Canada isn’t so bad, except for the winter.ย  Are you still planning on a winter vacation next year?”

“Count on it, Fanboy!” she grinned.

“Alright, that’s enough for sitting,” Mike groaned as he stood, stretching his aching back.ย  He took some videos of crashing waves and soaring seagulls, and got ready to hike again.ย  More stretching required.

At that, the pair headed further north, through rocky terrain, a few grassy patches, and some marshy muck.ย  They maintained a good pace despite Mike’s physical inadequacies, and he even managed to keep up a good conversation despite being winded.

“So let me get this straight,” repeated Edie.ย  “Ace Fray-lay was replaced by Vincent?ย  Who was replaced by Saint John?ย  And then he was replaced by Bruce Something six months later?”

“More or less, yeah,” said Mike.ย  “It’s pronounced more like ‘Frehley’.ย  Hang out with me enough and you’ll know all of Kisstory by heart.ย  My point is, the original members may be iconic but there are plenty of other guys who contributed great material.”

“Gotcha.ย  And which one is your favourite again?” she asked with genuine curiosity.

“Paul Stanley.ย  The Starchild!ย  When I was a kid, I tried to dance like he did on stage.ย  He had these spandex pants with tassels down the sides, and he would do these jumping spinning moves, and I tried so hard to dance just like him.ย  I made an air guitar our of cardboard and a yardstick.ย  I painted it black.ย  I posed with it, pretending to be Paul in my bedroom, spinning those old albums…” Mike drifted off with nostalgia.

Edie enjoyed spending these down-to-earth moments, rambling about these inconsequential things.ย  It sure was a lot better than fighting bad guys all the time!ย  Even though she was on the second day of her Canadian vacation, the first had been spoiled by a renter named George Sooner, who sabotaged their every activity.ย  Ominously, it turned out that Sooner was working under orders of a man called Shinzon, a strange clone from Australia that she had dealt with once before.

She shook her head straight.ย  This was her vacation.ย  No time to dwell on these existential threats.ย  Let’s hike, she thought.

The ground was now a mixture of medium sized stones, grassy patches, and wet puddles.ย  It slowed their pace as they made their way further north along the shoreline.ย  A bright orange fox darted out, sniffed the air, caught sight of the pair, and dashed back into the woods before Mike could snap a photo.

“Drat!” he exclaimed.ย  “Hey, you know what that reminds me of?ย  What if I told you that the Catman, Peter Criss, was replaced by the Fox, Eric Carr?”

“I’m never going to remember all this,” laughed Edie.

“You don’t have to!ย  You have me!ย  I’m a living, breathing Kiss encyclopedia!” chuckled Mike.

He stopped to look at the sun, already starting to make its way towards the horizon.

“Jeez, it’s kind of getting late in the day.ย  How long have we been walking?”ย  He checked his phone.ย  “It’s 3:00 pm.ย  We left in the morning.ย  Something’s wrong; we should have hit the town by now and been well on our way back.”

“How is it possible we lost track of that much time?” asked Edie.

Mike got a chill up his spine.ย  There was a possible explanation he didn’t want to think about, or raise in front of Edie.ย  Not on her vacation.

“No big deal.ย  Let’s just turn around and head back.ย  It’ll be dark when we get back but we had a great hike regardless.”

Edie was disconcerted.ย  “There’s no way I’ve been hiking that many hours.ย  I would know, I would feel it.ย  Yeah…let’s head back.ย  I want to go back.”

Mike and Edie made a 180, and began heading south.ย  The wind began to pick up as they walked, and accordingly, the waves grew in size and intensity.ย  They crashed on the rocks, cascading sprays of water over the two hikers.ย  They raised their hands to keep the water off their faces.ย  The air began to grow cold, and both were wearing shorts.ย  At one point up ahead, they reached a spot they could no longer cross.

“Wow,” said Mike.ย  “It’s rare you see the water get this rough!ย  Bad weather incoming!ย  The water’s risen so high we can’t go back the way we came.”ย  Indeed, one section of tiny rocky beach was now completely flooded up to the treeline.

“Let’s go inland then,” said Edie, eager for a change of scenery and shelter from the wind.ย  “This wind is going to rip the lashes right off my face!ย  Though that would be something to see….”

The pair turned inland and made their way through a thick strand of trees, which soon gave way to a more sparsely wooded area.ย  The wind was kept at bay by the mighty cedars and pines of the forest.

“If memory serves, if we keep hiking inland, we’ll eventually hit the county road.ย  Then we can just follow that back home,” said Mike.

“Sounds good,” responded Edie.ย  She inhaled deeply.ย  “Ooh I love that smell, of the forest and the trees!”

“It’s something huh?ย  You can see why I try to spend as much time here as possible,” answered Mike.

Suddenly, Edie stopped dead in her tracks.

“Something’s wrong Mike.ย  Do you hear that?”ย  The two remained silent for a moment.ย  Then Mike spoke.

“No…I don’t hear anything at all.ย  Just the wind.”

“Exactly.ย  The birds are gone.ย  The animals are gone.ย  I can’t seem to contact any.ย  They’ve left.ย  They must know something…be scared of something.”ย  Edie spoke with great concern in her voice.ย  “Sometimes when I’m out of contact with the animals like this, it means a severe storm is coming.”

“That tracks,” agreed Mike as he looked up to the rapidly blackening sky.ย  “I don’t suppose you packed your rocket boots, did you?”

“I’m sorry,” said Edie, “We weren’t supposed to be doing any superhero-ing this weekend.”

“That was the deal,” agreed Mike.ย  “Next time let’s make a note to pack the rocket boots, just in case.”

“Come on, let’s keep heading inland,” urged Edie.ย  “I don’t like it when I can’t contact any animals.”

There was no clear path ahead, so the pair forged their way through gaps in the trees, breaking branches as they went.ย  Then the rain began!ย  Edie raised a hood over her head while Mike donned his trademark fisherman hat.ย  Neither did a particularly great job of keeping them dry, but it was better than nothing.ย  The wind howled through the trees as the downpour intensified.ย  The pair had no choice but to stop and wait it out.ย  They could barely hear each other.

“These storms usually blow through pretty quick!” shouted Mike over the din.

Edie was covering her eyes (and lashes), but nodded in understanding.ย  They huddled together trying to keep warm.ย  It seemed all of Lake Huron was being dumped over their heads.

Suddenly a ray of sunlight burst through the cloud, indicating the worst was over.ย  10 seconds later, the rain audibly began to retreat.ย  Edie and Mike stood straight and looked up.ย  A patch of blue could be seen.

“Whew!” said Edie.ย  “That was a wet one!”

Mike wrung the water out of his hat.ย  “That sucked!ย  My shoes are soaked.ย  As we say in Canada, ‘I got two soakers’.”ย  Edie, meanwhile, was in the midst of changing her shoes.ย  Of course she had a backup pair.ย  She was, after all, Edie Van Heelin’.

“Sorry, I don’t have a backup pair for you, though you would look cute in hot pink,” she teased.

“You bet I would,” countered Mike.ย  “Come on.ย  Let’s keep going.”ย  With a squish-squish sound, Mike began walking inland once more.

Or, he thought it was inland.ย  After an hour of walking, he decided to raise the question of the elephant in the room.

“I hate to say it…but we are thoroughly lost,” he confessed.ย  “And I still have no signal on my phone.”

“Me neither,” said Edie with a frustrated harrumph.ย  “What choice to we have though?ย  Keep walking.ย  These woods don’t go on forever.ย  Or do they?ย  In Canada they have a lot of woods,” she reasoned.

“I figure we have to hit a road or somebody’s property eventually, and then we can at least get back on track,” answered Mike.ย  “I’m pretty tired though.”

“Want me to carry you?” offered Edie with a wink.ย  She wasn’t kidding.

Mike seriously pondered the offer.

“No, let’s proceed with my dignity intact,” he replied.

The pair walked another 20 minutes until they finally hit a clearing.ย  In this small clearing, decorated by tall grasses and a few small trees, stood a pair of deer.ย  Edie and Mike stopped in their tracks, crouched low without saying a word, and watched.ย  A mother and a fawn.ย  Quietly and stealthily, Mike managed to extract his phone from his pocket and get some brief video.ย  Then, suddenly, both deer darted off at the sound of…a car?

“I hear the road!” exclaimed Mike.ย  “We’re not far!”ย  He stood, but too quickly, and pulled something in his leg.

“OW!!ย  OW OW OW!ย  Oh ffff…”ย  He tapered off as he saw Edie’s disapproval of swearing.ย ย “Fffart,” he finished.ย  “Ah crap.ย  I gotta walk this off.ย  Ow, ow, ow.ย  This is gonna hurt.ย  OK. OK.ย  OK.ย  Let’s go.ย  Let’s walk.”

“You sure?” cautioned Edie.

“Yep, let’s go.ย  Here’s the thing.ย  I need you to keep me talking, keep my mind off the pain.ย  Ask me more questions about Kiss.”

Edie sighed.ย  “OK.ย  What’s the deal with the Cat guy again?”

“CatMAN,” corrected Mike.ย  Peter Criss.ย  He went solo in 1980, but in reality, he barely appeared on the two previous albums.ย  They used a ghost drummer.”

“He’s the drummer?” asked Edie for clarification.ย  “I thought he was a singer.”

“He was!ย  He sang on ‘Beth’ and lots of other songs too.ย  But he left the band in 1980 to go solo.ย  That’s when they brought in the Fox, Eric Carr.”

“Right!” said Edie, remembering her lessons now.ย  “The Fox.ย  I like that character.”

“Then you have good taste!” answered Mike.ย  “The road is just up ahead.ย  We’re golden.”

“I’d be the raccoon, if I were in Kiss,” pondered Edie.

“You’d look great as a raccoon!” enthused Mike.ย  “Keep talking, keep talking!”

Edie hiked ahead while Mike kept up the best he could, favouring his gammy leg, but no longer in pain so long as he could discuss his favourite band.

It was well past dark when the two returned to the cottage in the woods.ย  Mike collapsed into his favourite chair while Edie massaged the agony out.ย  He groaned in delight.ย  After catching his breath, he was able to speak a coherent sentence.

“I’m sorry, but I’m off my feet for the rest of the night,” he told Edie.ย  “I can’t do steaks tonight, I can’t even stand.ย  How about we order pizza.”

“They deliver pizza out here?” she queried.

“Boston Pizza does, and Boston Pizza is the best this town has to offer.ย  My treat.ย  Let’s get pizza.ย  Please.”

“Well, OK,” answered Edie.ย  “But you know what this means.”ย  She gave him a stern look.

“No.ย  What’s it mean?”ย  Mike was genuinely puzzled.

“As you recall, our first dinner was sabotaged by that Sooner jerk,” she explained.ย  “We have yet to have a proper outdoor steak dinner like you promised.ย  This means I need to stay an extra day.”

“Oh, drat,” snapped Mike in faux disappointment.ย  “Whatever shall I do.”

They laughed.

“Not a bad day, all in all?” asked Mike.

“I’ll tell you a secret,” answered Edie.ย  “I love getting lost in the woods.ย  I even prefer hiking in the rain!ย  This was my favourite kind of hike.ย  I had an awesome day!ย  You?”

“I did, but I’m paying for it now.ย  Which means you’re going to pay for it now,” he teased.

“Whatever do you mean?” asked Edie with a similar teasing tone.

“Have you ever heard of a movie called Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park?” asked Mike.

“Oh no,” said Edie with grim defeat.

“Oh yes.ย  You’re about to spend the next 90 minutes with me, watching one of the worst made-for-TV movies of all time:ย  1978’s Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park.ย  Fun fact:ย  Peter Criss is in it but they dubbed his voice over by an actor named Michael Bell.”

“Oh Mike,” groaned Edie.ย  “You know I hate old movies!”

“I do know that,” answered Mike, “but I’m the one dying in pain over here!”

Edie relented.ย  “Fine.ย  Put on your Kiss.ย  But afterwards I want to have a night fire.”

“I can manage that,” compromised Mike.ย  “Rock and roll all nite…” he prompted.

“…And party every day?” responded Edie.

“You’ll be ready to join the Kiss army any day now!” cheered Mike.ย  “Ow,” he said as he pulled his leg again.

And with that, pizza was ordered, a movie started, and a night just begun.

Epilogue

“Tommy Lee to Shinzon!ย  Tommy Lee to Shinzon,” shouted the tattooed idiot into the communicator.ย  “Yo, Shinzon, it’s Tommy Lee, pick up pick up pick up dude.”

The radio crackled to life.

“What is it, Lee?” asked a voice with a strange Australian accent.ย  “I’m predisposed at the moment.”

“Yo, dude!” answered Tommy Lee.ย  “I did what you said, dude.ย  I got my alien buds, we got in their UFO, and we went to go mess with Edie Van Heelin’ and Fanboy Mike just like you told me, dude.”

“Excellent, Lee!” answered Shinzon with glee.ย  “What did you do?”

“We totally zapped them with a ray gun and made ’em fall asleep for a couple hours.ย  They had no idea.ย  And then later on they got caught in a rainstorm!”

Shinzon waited to hear more.ย  “…And?”

“And what, dude?” asked a confused Tommy Lee.

“That’s it?ย  You made them fall asleep and they got wet?”ย  Shinzon was clearly furious.ย  “You idiot!”ย  He killed the connection.

His boss would not be happy at all.

Welcome to the Writer’s Room!

In the Writer’s Room…

“Gentlemen!” I announced to my friends gathered in the room.ย  “It’s good to have us all back together.ย  This is our first meeting together since Christmas, am I right?”

To my left, my bald and beautiful friend Aaron answered.ย  “It sure was, sorry I have not been involved with the Community as much since then, it’s a busy time.”

I smiled and patted his shoulder.ย  “It is a busy time, yet you just provided ‘Chapter 14:ย  Tee Bone Man and Superdekes Discover the Tao‘ for us, and people have absolutely loved it.ย  It was daring, technical, fun, and still managed to fall into continuity!”

Aaron bowed his head.ย  “Thank you but flattery will get you nowhere!”

To my right sat Harrison the Australian, silky-haired, and with a note pad in front of him.ย  To his right was John T. Snow, sipping from a Gene Simmons Soda cola bottle quietly.ย  Opposite him, and to Aaron’s left was the 80’s Metal Man, sitting quietly and peering over his glasses at the rest of us.ย  At the end of the conference table was a pair of monitors with webcams enabled.ย  Their users had yet to log in from remote locations.

“Well gentlemen, let’s get started while we wait for our last two guests.ย  To say the least, Harrison and I have been busy.ย  We have our next chapter of the Adventures of Tee Bone Man ready to go with art complete.ย  We’re calling it ‘Max the Axe’ for now, but it does have a proper title that will be revealed in due time.ย  Harrison wrote this piece, which introduces the new character of Max the Axe himself; he’s kind of a big deal.”

The guys all smiled and nodded at this news.ย  “And then,” I continued, “Harrison has written what we are considering the climax to Tee Bone Man:ย  Phase One.ย  It’s so big that he had to split it into three instalments.ย  Three stories, three posts, over three days.ย  It’s a big ‘Epic’ that will serve as the grand finale to Phase One.”

80’s Metal Man raised his hand.ย  “I apologize, but for the benefit of the table, can you explain Phase One and what this means for us?”

“Gladly!” I answered.ย  I reached for a big marker board and began a diagram.ย  “You know how Marvel movies had Phase One:ย  The Infinity Saga?ย  And now we’re into Phase Two: The Multiverse Saga?”ย  I paused; everyone nodded yes.ย  “Multiverse is all the rage these days.ย  Star Trek is doing it, DC is doing it.ย  So are we.ย  The first 17 stories in The Adventures of Tee Bone Man comprise Phase One.ย  It’s a specific Saga, and it will all make sense to you when we wrap it up.ย  Harrison’s ‘Epic’ is our Endgame.ย  After that, Phase Two!ย  We’re starting to bring in characters from other alternate universe.ย  I’ll give you one spoiler:ย  the first multiversal character we introduce is a favourite Star Wars villain.”ย  There was a gasp of whispers around the table.ย  “A villain, but not our main overarching villain.ย  In fact, I’ve even already named this character in one of the stories.ย  If you missed it, you missed it!”

Snowman raised his hand.ย  “What if we’re not quite as big into Star Wars as you and Harrison?” he asked with fairness.

“No worries Snowman.ย  You guys are all going to continue on doing what you do.ย  Harrison and I have an eye on the overall story arc.ย  We know who the ‘Big Bad’ villain in the end will be, who has been driving all this action all this time.ย  We know what this villain wants.ย  All you guys have to do is keep writing your stories and we’ll do the rest.ย  In fact now you can do even more.ย  If you want your character the ‘Snowman’ to meet his evil opposite – the ‘Sandman’ perhaps – you can have them meet now.ย  You can do anything.ย  You can have Gene Simmons team up with Charles Luther from the film Runaway, if you want to.ย  The store is now open, gentlemen!”

This seemed to create a flurry of activity.ย  Harrison was scribbling notes as the others all seemed fired up by this news.ย  I then addressed Metal Man directly.

“Now, Metal Man, I know you have a story ready about the plot thread involving the secret mole in Rock and Roll Heaven.ย  Your story will fit perfectly into our Phase Two, which will tend to be broader in style and structure.ย  There will be tangents.ย  One of our new writers has written an entire story that takes place in an alternate universe, and…”

At that moment one of the two monitors came to life.ย  A dark, blurry image appeared.

“Hi!ย  Who’s this!” I addressed the screen.

There was a buzz of static and a distorted voice.

“This is Holen,” responded the blurred figure.

“Holen!ย  Welcome to the show my friend.ย  You know Harrison, this is Aaron, John and Michael the 80’s Metal Man.”

“Hello, Richard Dreyfuss, I always wanted to meet you, you were great in Jaws,” said Holen to John T. Snow.ย  Snowman laughed.ย  Not the first Dreyfuss joke at this table, and so he even wrote Dreyfuss into Tee Bone Man as a character.

“I was just about to talk about your chapter, Holen.ย  Why don’t you take it from here?”

Holen’s distorted voice came through the speakers.ย  “Yes, I’ve written the first chapter of an ongoing ‘Noir’ universe.ย  We call it ‘Noirison’.ย  It’s different versions of our characters, unconnected to the main Tee Bone Man universe, but still a different, dark reflection of it.”

I looked at the guys.ย  “You see?ย  This is the kind of thing we can do with the Multiverse.ย  Maybe Aaron can bring in a hockey story from a universe where the Montreal Habs win the cup.”ย  Only Aaron and I laughed at this joke.ย  The Habs, of course, are Tee Bone Man’s hockey team.

There was a beep, and the second monitor came to life.

“Hey guys!ย  Sorry I’m late.ย  Kids, softball, you know the whole routine!”

I beamed as the final guest had finally arrived.ย  “Guys, please meet MarriedandHeels, the California Girl!ย  She’s been helping me write the Edie Van Heelin’ stories and I think it’s time I brought her into these meetings.ย  Everyone say hello.”

The guys made their introductions, all but Harrison, who continued scribbling furious notes.ย  She waved back with a wide smile.

“You’re just in time, Manda.ย  I was just getting to our new stuff,” I said to her screen.

“Well take it away then, let’s hear it!” she responded with enthusiasm.

“So, as you guys have probably guessed, I’m been setting up a big crossover between the Adventures of Tee Bone Man and Edie Van Heelin’.ย  California Girl here has been co-writing the Edie stories with me…”

Manda interrupted.ย  “Well, you do all the hard work.”

I adopted a mocking tone.ย  “Oh yeah, my bruised and battered fingers are so sore from all the hard typing.”ย  Harrison laughed as he scribbled.ย ย “Anyway, we have a few more Edie stories coming, before the big crossover, but I can confirm it’s happening.ย  After discussion with Harrison, we felt that the big crossover should serve as the coda of Phase One.ย  I am happy to announce that I have written the story, and it ties up a lot of the big threads that we have been secretly weaving without your knowledge.ย  It also starts laying tracks for Phase Two.ย  I think you are all going to love it.ย  I just need Manda to provide her story notes and additions, and Harrison to do the art.”

“That’s right,” added Manda.ย  “We need to make sure Edie is wearing all the right clothes and drinking the right tea.ย  The fine details,” she winked.

“Important details!” I corrected.ย  “I always value your input.ย  We created Edie Van Heelin’ together, she’s gotta fit both our visions.”

I noticed Harrison had barely mumbled a word this whole time.

“How you doing over there Harrison, nothing to say today?ย  You see California Girl is here?”ย  California Girl waved from her screen.

Harrison finally looked up.ย  “Oh, yes, hello California Girl.ย  I’m so sorry, I do apologize, I’ve just been working on some numbers here.”ย  Harrison then addressed the table.

“Guys, I’ve been working up the Lego budgets to do the artwork in Phase Two.ย  While I do have a number of sets covered, no spoilers, it’s the figures that are hard to acquire.ย  And, no offence, Edie Van Heelin’s constant costume changes are a large sum of this budget.”

I rubbed the side of my head.ย  “I knew this would be a problem.ย  Think we can have her do the battle in her silver skirt?ย  I can tone down the costume changes otherwise.”

“As long as you can still make a Lady Vader figure for Edie to fight down the line,” added California Girl.

“Yes, of course, no problem, but with us introducing new characters, the Lego budget is still very worrisome,” finished Harrison.

“Well, I do have some good news for you there,” I told him.ย  “I just sent you a bunch of bags of Lego as a donation to the Lego art fund.ย  Lots of minifigs in there, including a couple that will come in handy next December when we do our second Christmas episode…”

California Girl began clapping at this news.ย  The others soon joined in, and suddenly it was a round of applause for Harrison and his awesome Lego art.

“Yeah let’s hear it for this guy and his awesome art!” I said.ย  Harrison blushed and quietly said “thank you.”

After the applause died down, John Snow served us all a round of Simmons soda, while California Girl drank her green tea, and Holen consumed a blurry bottle of something blurry.ย  I addressed the room.

“So there you go, folks!ย  Phase One is wrapping up in months.ย  Three chapters to go:ย  ‘Max the Axe’, the ‘Epic’, and ‘Tee Bone Man vs Edie Van Heelin’.ย  When we reveal what the actual title of Phase One is, you will understand the plot threads being wrapped up.ย  You’re gonna love it!ย  Then, it’s wide open in Phase Two: The Multiverse Saga!”

“Good meeting, guys!” said Aaron.ย  “I gotta go get the kids from school!”

“And I have to take mine to their next sporting event!” said California Girl.ย  “Wanna see my shoes first?”ย  She then showed off a cool purple and black pair of Nike’s.ย  “These took me 12.5 miles on Monday!”ย  We all congratulated her and she signed off.

“I have to run too,” said Holen.ย  “Not 12.5 miles though.ย  Looking forward to what you all think of Noirison.”

Michael the 80s Metal Man stood.ย  “And I look forward to your feedback regarding my story of the mole in Rock and Roll Heaven.”

“Patience, young Jedi!” I bowed and responded.ย  Michael then disappeared through a portal.

Snowman grabbed the remaining Simmons soda and also excused himself.ย  Something about a big record sale somewhere he had to check out.ย  Just Harrison and I were left in the Writer’s Room.

“Exciting times, eh?” I asked him.

“Very,” he responded.

I sat there and just stared at him, as he calmly stroked his moustache.

“You don’t get very excited, do you?” I questioned.

“This is the most excited I’ve been in days,” answered Harrison.

I shrugged.ย  “True that.ย  Wait until the Lego donations arrive, and do the budget later.ย  You have lots of ideas?”

This time, Harrison truly did look excited.

“Oh yes,” he said.ย  “The best is yet to come!”
